Android 6.0 Marshmallow factory images arrive for Nexus 5, 6, 7 (2013), 9 and Player

Android M Easter Egg-6

If you happen to own a Nexus device and you’ve been waiting to get your hands on the most recent version of Android, your wait is finally over – Google has just posted Android 6.0 Marshmallow factory images for all current Nexus devices. Owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player can now download and install Android 6.0 on their devices.

Remember that installing these updates directly from the Google Developer website requires a bit of know-how, and we’ve put together a walkthrough that should be able to help if you’re new to the manual installation method. If you aren’t keen on updating manually, Google should  begin rolling out Android 6.0 OTAs to these Nexus devices any day now.

Android Marshmallow launches next week

Nexus event google (20)

Google is currently holding an event in San Francisco and the company has just announced that the new Android Marshmallow update is set to roll out to existing Nexus devices next week. Like previous years, the company’s own devices are the first to get the update and Google has confirmed that these devices will be getting the new Android 6.0 update next week:

At the moment, the company hasn’t confirmed whether both versions of the Nexus 7 will get the latest update or whether it will only be the Nexus 7 2013 but of course, we’ll let you know as soon as we find out. Unfortunately, it looks like the LG Nexus 4 and HTC-made Nexus 10 have reached their end-of-life status with Google not mentioning that these devices will be getting the Android Marshmallow update.

What does Google’s latest update bring? The list of new feature is extensive but the key features include Android Pay, Google Now on Tap, a new simplified permissions system, better battery management, improved sharing functionality and simplified volume controls.

Google has also added a new doze feature to increase standby time when you’re not using the phone, automatic backup and restore of app data and settings to Google Drive, a new RAM manager and a new vertical app drawer that also displays your four more recently used apps at the top. Lastly, Google has also listened to feedback and Android Marshmallow now brings support for a horizontal home screen, which has been missing until now.

Do you have a Nexus device and if so, which one? Are you looking forward to the update? Let us know your views in the comments below and check out our Diving Into M series for a closer look at some of the features in the Android Marshmallow OS.

Here’s a list of all of the HTC smartphones compatible with Android Pay

HTC_One_Max_Back_HTC_Logo_02_TA

Earlier today, HTC created a new page on its official website dedicated to explaining just how Android Pay will work on its smartphones. The Taiwanese company also addressed the privacy concerns many potential users are having by reiterating that “a virtual account number” is generated to protect account information and to ensure that all card details stay safe.

Android Pay is compatible with a variety of different AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon-branded HTC smartphones, including the One M7, One M8, One Max, Desire 601, Desire EYE and Nexus 9. The full list can be seen in the table below:

In order to use the service, owners of supported devices will need to download and install the Android Pay application from the Play Store and add their debit or credit card information. Once done, they will have the facility to pay for goods in over 700,000 locations in the United States using the contactless platform.

The 16GB tablet normally sells for $399, but with this deal, you’ll only be shelling out $239.40. Alternatively, the 32GB model goes for $479, with this discount bringing it down to a humble $287, nearly $200 off! However, you’ll need to act fast, as they’re selling like hotcakes!

Those interested in an HTC One M9 will see a 25% cut on the retail price ($486.75 as opposed to $649) and will be given $100 in Google Play credit, which can be spent on apps, books, movies, and etc.

There’s also a handful of accessories that’re anywhere from 50 to 60% off. Similarly, the RE Camera is seeing a 50% off discount, bringing the price down to an attractive $99.50.

Deal: HTC selling the 16 GB Nexus 9 for $239.40, 32 GB version only $287.40 (US-only)

Nexus 9-2

Trying to get yourself a brand new Nexus 9 tablet? You are looking to spend $399 to $479… that is, unless you buy it straight from HTC. The Taiwanese manufacturer just went nuts and started selling the Google tablet at amazingly reduced prices. You can now grab the 16 GB version for only $239.40, while the 32 GB iteration will go for $287.40.

Those are some very sweet deals, considering the prices these tablets usually go for. This would be only for the WiFi versions, though. There’s currently no discount on the LTE-enabled pads. Now, do keep in mind there is one significant caveat – the website states “all purchases must be billed and shipped to a valid mailing address in the 50 United States and the District of Columbia only.” Pretty straight forward.

Nexus 9 press

All things considered, the Nexus 9 is a very nifty tablet to have. It managed to get a 9/10 in our review, which places it well above many other competitors. And even though its an aging device, it continues to hold its own pretty well.

The Nexus 9 packs a Tegra K1 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 8.9 2048x1536p display, an 8 MP rear camera, a 1.6 MP front shooter and a 6700 mAh battery. It’s certainly no weakling, and at this price point it happens to be a very good deal too. Just make sure you act fast if you want to jump in on this deal, because we are not sure how long it will stick around. Are any of you signing up?!
