Binaries for the Nexus 9 are being included in factory image build

google_nexus_9_color_fanGoogle recently released a factory image for the Nexus 9 tablet, but we were still waiting for binaries to be made officially available. Well, it turns out Google already released those binaries and most people didn’t even notice. The binaries for the Nexus 9 have been included on the LRX21L factory image on a separate vendor partition, which also explains why the factory image is a pretty large download.

Now that we’ve got everything cleared up for the Nexus 9, we’re just waiting on Lollipop images for other devices.

It was only a matter of time before the Nexus 9 was rooted, and thanks to veteran developer Chainfire, that time is now. Less than a few hours after the source code for the HTC-designed tablet was released, Chainfire has come up with a root method that will be familiar to anyone who has used ADB and FastBoot in the past. If you’re looking to get down and dirty with your new tablet, hit the source for instructions on how to get started.

HTC is planning their own line of premium tablets to launch in 2015

HTC Logo

If it wasn’t clear with the announcement of the Nexus 9, HTC is back in the tablet game, and their Chief Financial Officer Chang Chia-lin had some details to share during the company’s recent earnings conference call. Planning a launch sometime next year, the Taiwanese company may be looking into co-branding to expand HTC’s brand appeal (similar to their former partnership with Beats). HTC North Asia President Jack Tong also revealed that HTC is aiming for the mid and high-tier tablet market, claiming the profit margin in the budget tablet sector is too slim.

While the tablets won’t be cheap, they will likely be premium devices in every aspect, utilizing HTC’s amazing design team. It will be interesting to see what brands HTC partners up with in the future. Anyone out there getting excited at the prospect of an HTC tablet with the manufacturer’s Sense skin and HTC’s design language? Let us know in the comments below.

LTE version of Nexus 9 shows up in FCC filing

google_nexus_9_screens

Yesterday was the official launch day for the latest Google tablet, the Nexus 9. Buyers have been able to place orders through a variety of sources like the Google Play store or Amazon and they can even go down to a Best Buy store to pick one up and avoid the wait for shipping. Common to all of these early purchases though is that they are all for WiFi-only versions of the tablet. That could change soon as an FCC filing has surfaced for an HTC tablet device, presumably the Nexus 9, that includes LTE capabilities.

The FCC filing indicates the tablet device supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, and 41, which covers all of the major U.S. carriers. In addition, the FCC filing shows the device has support for GSM850/1900 bands as well as WCDMA bands 2, 4 and 5. This indicates the device should be capable of roaming on a global basis.

Google Play currently lists an Indigo Black, 32GB model as the only LTE enabled option with the note that it is “coming soon” for a retail price of $599. Now that the FCC has granted their approval, it should not be much longer before Google changes the status to being in the warehouse and ready to ship.

You can buy a Nexus 9 for half price, but only if you’re quick

HTC has decided that it doesn’t want to follow the herd when it comes to slashing prices just before the gadget-buying apocalypse that is Black Friday. That’s why, instead, the company will ape an Amazon-style flash sale by offering a single, cut-price device every Tuesday for the next nine weeks. First up, we’ve got the brand new Nexus 9, which is available for $199, 50 percent off the regular $399 price. Unfortunately, HTC will only sell you a limited quantity of the Lollipop-running tablet at such a deep discount, so Johnny latecomer will have to settle for just $50 knocked-off the 16GB or 32GB edition of the slate. The deal is open from now until midnight ET / 9PM PT, so you’d best get a move on if you want to save your cash.

HTC kicks off Hot Deals program with half price Nexus 9 (16GB for $199) [Update: Andddd they’re gone]

HTC Hot Deals HTC United States

UPDATE: HTC says they’re completely out and will have something else to share with you all.

Looking to scoop up a Nexus 9 tablet for yourself? Why not buy it directly from HTC who just happens to have the tablet at $199 for the 16GB model. As part of the hardware maker’s new Hot Deals program, the Android 5.0 tablet is half its normal price.  As you can imagine, this is a limited time deal and subject to quantities on hand. But, if there are enough of these tablets to go around, you can get in on this by 9PM PST.

Should you miss out on the deal you can still take advantage of a good, but not as great offer, of $50 off the Nexus 9. HTC will discount both 16 GB or 32 GB for everyone who purchases by 9 p.m. PT/midnight ET on Tuesday.

Nexus 9 teardown reveals that it won’t be easy to repair

HTC_Nexus_9_Teardown_01

The folks at iFixit took apart the Nexus 9, which of course revealed a lot of super cool hardware like the 64-bit Tegra K1. However, the teardown also revealed that if you’re looking to fix it on your own, it won’t be so easy. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being super easy, the Nexus 9 scored a 3.

Removing the rear case is easy enough, but once you get inside the “interior is a maze of tape and thin, delicate cables,” making your job very tedious. Even replacing the display proved to be difficult as it’s “insanely very solidly glued to the midframe.”

HTC_Nexus_9_Teardown_02

Now that’s out of the way, does this information impact your decision to buy the Nexus 9? I don’t plan on ever repairing any tablet so it doesn’t make as much of difference to me as the 4:3 ratio.

[Smoking Hot Deal] HTC kicks of 9 weeks of Hot Deals with the Nexus 9 (16 GB) for only $199

Nexus_9_Official_01

HTC is going to host a Hot Deal each week for the next 9 weeks, and the first one is a doozy. Starting right now (12:00 PM EST / 9:00 AM PST), you can grab the 16 GB version of the Nexus 9 from their site for only $199. That’s a whopping 50% discount off of the normal $399 price.

This hot deal is 12 hours long, but supplies are very limited and unlikely to last the entire time. Once supplies for the Hot Deal are depleted, you can still save $50 off of either the 16 GB or 32 GB version provided you enter your order in by 12:00 am EST / 9:00 pm PST. That would put you at $349 for the 16 GB version or $429 for the 32 GB version.

HTC is going to run a new Hot Deal each week for the next 9 weeks so look for a post from us or check their Facebook and Twitter feeds (#HTCHotDeals) every Tuesday at 12:00 pm EST / 9:00 am PST. If this deal is any indication of things to come, you won’t want to miss out.
