Nexus 7 finally get “certified” for Verizon 4G LTE

It seems Verizon is finally ready to carry the Nexus 7, and it is Verizon 4G LTE CERTIFIED. The tablet is now arriving at Verizon stores, although we don’t know when they will officially release it, but it is rumored that Feb 13 is the date. In the image below, you can see the Verizon logo on the box:

Screen-Shot-2014-02-08-at-12.10.58-PM1On the box below, you will see that it’s a 32GB version, and 32GB LTE model is available for $349 on Google Play Store. It seems that Verizon will launch it on contract-based, so it might be a good option for people looking forward to a LTE/4G tablet. Everything else is same under the hood, just like the original Nexus 7.

Verizon will offer Google’s Nexus 7 tablet starting this Thursday

As reported yesterday, Google’s Nexus 7 tablet will soon become available on Verizon Wireless with support for the carrier’s LTE network. And soon means very soon; the 7-inch Android slate will go on sale at Verizon this Thursday, February 13th, with the 32GB model priced at $350. Apparently, the Nexus 7 will also be available on a two-year contract for $250, though only for a limited time. If you already own a 2013-edition Nexus 7 — as many of us do; it did come out almost six months ago — you’ll be able to access Verizon’s LTE network once you’ve downloaded the latest software update. Adding the tablet to your plan will cost $10 per month.

[RUMOUR] Nexus 8 launch coming at the end of April due to poor Nexus 7 sales

Nexus 8 launchThe Nexus 8 is quickly becoming the definitive ‘Bigfoot’ of the Android world; rumours of its existence have run rife since the above picture was spotted on Google‘s own website, however in classic Google style, the tech company has revealed absolutely nothing about its plans or even hinted at where it’s going with its tablet line. Today, we get yet another rumour that is saying that the Nexus 8 launch will be happening at the end of April, and will be manufactured in conjunction with ASUS, as the previous Nexus 7 models have been.

This is the second such rumour we have heard that has pinpointed the partnership of Google and ASUS to continue through the manufacturing of the elusive Nexus 8 (both times were reported by DigiTimes). The tip this time apparently comes from a source involved in Taiwan-based supply chains, but again cites to the poor performance of the 2013 Nexus 7 as the cause of the move to the 8-inch form factor. As with all rumours, though, it’s best to take any rumour news with a grain of salt.

If I’m honest, I’m not sure which device I’m less convinced exists, the Nexus 8 or the Nexus 10. Both have had multiple rumour trails yet both of them, as with all rumours Google-related, have amounted to nothing. But that might just be me getting weary: what do you think about this rumour? Do you think that Google and ASUS are teaming up to bring us a Nexus 8 this April? Let us know your opinion.

Rumor: Nexus line coming to an end in 2015?

If true, this may be sad for many, but according to @eldarmurtazin on Twitter, Google will be killing off the Nexus line by next year in favor of Google Play Edition devices.

The Nexus program has been around since January 2010 when the HTC Nexus One was announced. All Nexus devices have been pure Google Android, with no custom skin on top of them. Highlights of the Nexus program have been that the devices have “usually” been unlocked, were “usually” sold directly by Google and have been the first to receive software updates.

While it may seem this is the natural progression, killing off the Nexus line once phones started shipping with stock firmware, in my opinion, I don’t think that Google is ready to kill it just yet.

One thing that people have praised the Nexus program for is that it has offered the choice of an off-contract at a reasonable price. Besides the Moto G, which isn’t in the same class as the Nexus 5, there is no GPE device that is that inexpensive. The HTC One is $599 from the Play Store and the Samsung Galaxy S4 is even more expensive at $649. Besides the only GPE tablet, LG’s G Pad 8.3, and the Moto G, there are no reasonably priced GPE devices.

Devices like the Moto X have proved that selling a cheaper device is possible, but who knows if Samsung, Sony and HTC will ever release a high-end GPE device that is also relatively inexpensive.

With comments from Android director of engineering Dave Burke (from the August 2013 article from The Verge) that states they’re “halo” devices meant to educate the rest of the ecosystem, I’m not sure I believe the death of the program.

“Basically what Nexus allows us to do is set the standard … [we can] demonstrate how Android runs and hopefully influence other device manufacturers to take what we’ve done and do even better,” he said in that interview.

There was also another reason for its existence, that Google needs hardware on which it can develop Android and Burke said “as an engineering team creating a mobile platform — we can’t do that in the abstract. We need to do it on a real device that we’re carrying with us.”

Well, anything is possible, but only time will tell if Google is putting an end to the Nexus. That being said… where’s that new Nexus 10?

[RUMOUR] Is Google readying a Nexus 8 made by ASUS?

nexus 8Late last year, a lot of noise was made when a suspicious looking tablet appeared on Google‘s own website. While the tablet did somewhat resemble the 2013 Nexus 7, the bezel width suggested that the screen of that tablet was closer to 8 inches. And so began the rumour of the Nexus 8, for which we’ve really not had any evidence to believe it even exists. Until now…

According to DigiTimes, the 2013 Nexus 7 has not been performing as well as its predecessor, the original 2012 model, which has caused Google to change tack and instead move to developing an 8-inch Nexus tablet, aimed at release in mid-2014, which will presumably be called the Nexus 8.

And the rumoured manufacturer of this mysterious Nexus 8? Why none other than Nexus 7 manufacturer ASUS. It makes sense considering the Google and ASUS partnership has already had two successful outings to date. The source of the rumour also suggests that Google may be looking at Intel‘s Bay Trail-T platform to power the tablet.

That’s definitely an interesting rumour to digest: would you be willing to get an ASUS-made Nexus 8 if it were ever released? Let us know what you think.

Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 Cases on Sale for 25% Off in the Play Store

Nexus 5 Nexus 7 casesGoogle is pretty notorious for offering up discounts on games and apps, but I think this is the first time that I have seen them discount their cases, sleeves and covers. Currently you can save 25% off three accessories for your Nexus 7 tablet and two for your Nexus 5 smartphone.

On the Nexus 5 side of things –

Nexus 5 Nexus 7 Accessory SaleI am sure you could start all kinds of rumors about this discount sale going on. Like that the next Nexus is on the way soon, Google has too many accessories that people aren’t buying and is trying to clear inventory or that they have new stuff coming in and want to clear out some higher-priced stock before announcing lower priced goodies.

No matter the ‘real’ reason for the sale, as they don’t mention it on the Play Store, it does mean you can get something cool directly from Google for your Google device. Hit the individual links above or just head to the Promo Page.

Kit Kat India Goes Into Damage Control, Will Honour The Winners Of The 2013 Nexus 7

kit kat indiaA few days ago, we covered the story of some people in India possibly getting the short end of the stick in the Android KitKat competition where one of the prizes was a 2013 Nexus 7. The story goes that some winners of the Nexus 7 ended up receiving the older, 2012 Nexus 7 instead of the 2013 version. Kit Kat India appeared to be indifferent at first, however their Twitter and Facebook pages started getting bombarded with expressions of disappointment. A truly messy situation, one which threatened to escalate and damage the Android KitKat brand in the region and wider community.

Fortunately seeing the potential to damage both Android and Nestle’s KitKat brand, Kit Kat India caved and posted the above photo on their official webpage earlier today. A message went up on their Facebook page soon after to confirm that they would be calling up winners of the competition who had received the 2012 Nexus 7 to organise a replacement with a 2013 version. This wasn’t the quickest of resolutions, nor was it done completely voluntarily, however it likely did wonders for the Nexus 7′s reputation in particular ahead of any last minute Christmas shopping this festive season.

What do you think about this whole ordeal? Do you think Kit Kat India could have handled this better? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Thanks Manu for calling this in!
