It seems like every time you turn around lately there’s another Nexus sale going on. This time Best Buy is doing a special offer on a discounted Nexus 6P – including a free gift card – as well as offering lower prices on the Nexus Player, OnHub, Chromecast and Chromecast Audio.
The gold Nexus 6P is currently $50 off ($449.99) at Best Buy and comes with a free $25 gift card as well as free shipping and six months of included cloud storage. Unfortunately, the aluminum and graphite versions are not on sale. The Nexus 5X is also $80 off ($299.99), but doesn’t have a free gift card. You will get free shipping and cloud storage though.

5 features I’d like to see in the next Nexus phone
Rumors suggest that new Nexus devices are on the way, following in the footsteps of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Although it’s a tad early, we have a list of features we want to see Google include with whatever comes later this year.
Our imagination is running wild as more and more Nexus rumors hit the web, with one of the most recent ‘leaks’ pointing to two new versions of the Nexus being made by HTC. According to chatter originating from Weibo, HTC’s smaller 2016 Nexus will feature a 5-inch screen, whilst the larger model’s display will be closer to 5.5 inches.
Elsewhere, news of the apparent codenames of the new HTC-made Nexus devices have popped up, said to be named the T50 and T55.
All this recent Nexus talk has got us thinking about what we’d like to see when the new devices do eventually arrive.
Nexus 6P-inspired design, but smaller
I think that the Nexus 6P is a stunning phone and most people agree, so it’s a shame that it is slightly too big for some to handle.
Ideally, I’d like to see a new Nexus smartphone boast a glorious design similar to the Nexus 6P, but arrive in a size slightly closer to that of the Nexus 5X. With these changes in place, we’d be left with a great-looking smartphone that could easily be used with one hand. With the other mitt, we could stroke the edges of the 2016 Nexus and marvel at its beauty.
Although bigger phones now seem to be more popular than ever before, the idea of not being able to use a phone with one hand still doesn’t have everybody convinced. A smaller 2016 Nexus taking design inspiration from the Nexus 6P couldn’t go far wrong in our minds, especially when you consider the Nexus 5X felt slightly cheap in the hand.
If I were being picky, I’d also request some smaller bezels so we could make more of the phone’s screen.
Bring back wireless charging
Wireless charging isn’t a game-changer, but it’s nice knowing you don’t need a cable every time you need to charge your smartphone. Late last year, Android’s Vice President of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer took to Reddit during a Q&A. The Nexus man was faced with a couple of questions about wireless charging and the answers were interesting to say the least.
According to Lockheimer, wireless charging was left out of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P because USB Type-C is present, which apparently means Nexus owners don’t ‘waste time’ trying to work out which way to plug their micro-USB cord in. We don’t think Lockheimer’s answer is too convincing considering turning over a micro-USB cord after realizing you’re holding it the wrong way takes less than a second.
In most instances, convenience is valued over speed, and with that philosophy in mind we think wireless charging would be a nice, welcome addition to the next Nexus phone.
We’ll be the first to admit that wireless charging has its disadvantages and isn’t as fast as standard charging methods, but it would be nice to have the feature bundled with a future Nexus.
Battery boost
The battery life of the Nexus 5X is good enough to prevent bi-daily charges most of the time, but it isn’t out of this world. Naturally, we’re hoping for an upgrade in this area for the future Nexus phones.
Although the Nexus 5X’s 2700 mAh battery charges quickly via USB Type-C, heavy users may find that they eat their way through that fairly quickly. The Nexus 6P brings a bigger and better 3,450 mAh battery to the table, which copes particularly well with demanding work and plenty of screen-on time.
If we’re seeing two new Nexus phones this year, buyers on a budget would certainly appreciate improved battery life in the smaller model. Whilst it makes sense to have a bigger battery in the phone with the larger screen, improved performance in the affordable model would convince more people to part with their cash.
Fair international pricing
The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P caused quite a stir when they arrived, with reviews of both smartphones dishing out compliments on design, build quality and user experience. Sadly, some Android fans were left disappointed after learning of the difference in international pricing for the two gadgets.
Whilst the 16GB Nexus 5X cost around $380 (at launch) in the United States, the same handset was costing Australian buyers the equivalent of $463. A top-of-the-line 128GB Nexus 6P cost around $649, whilst the same mobile was on sale in Italy for a whopping $948. Ouch.
Our fingers are crossed that the new additions to the Nexus family are fairly priced for international buyers.
No more 16GB option
We can’t point the finger at the Nexus 6P here considering the base model offers 32GB of internal storage, but the Nexus 5X should bow its head in shame.
Yes, the cheapest Nexus 5X arrives with just 16GB of internal storage, which won’t get you too far nowadays. If there are two new versions of the Nexus right around the corner, we’re hoping that the smaller option starts at 32GB. If that’s not possible, how about the option of expandable storage?

Report: Google plans to take an ‘Apple-like’ approach to the Nexus line
Google’s Nexus line has been constantly changing ever since its inception. Are Nexus devices aimed at the high-end market, budget-friendly crowd, or somewhere in between? That’s sort of the beauty of it all, really, as each Nexus phone is different in its own way. This is thanks in part to OEM partnerships. Google has reached out to Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG and Huawei in the past to make its Nexus smartphones, which ensures each Nexus device is unique in its own way. But if a new report from The Information proves true, Google may be taking a bit more control over its precious Nexus line.
Nexus smartphones will be more akin to Google’s Pixel line
According to this new report, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has signaled to “colleagues and outsiders” that the company is planning on taking more control over the Nexus line, from hardware to software. Google already controls the software side of things, but this new route would essentially weed out OEM partners and see Google making the hardware as well. The move to control both the hardware and software is supposedly being put in place in order to make the Nexus line more like the iPhone. The report states that this would strengthen Android’s brand overall in order to capture more share in the high-end market, an area in which Apple already dominates in many parts of the world. Google also doesn’t want its revenue-generating services on high-end devices to be at the mercy of Apple, like they are now.
With Google’s Chromebook Pixel and Pixel C tablet, Google built the hardware and software from top to bottom. This is essentially what the company will be doing with the Nexus line. Of course, Google will still be using processors, displays and other components from different manufacturers, but Google will be the sole company involved in building and producing the phone. The report also states that these new Nexus phones might only have Google’s name on them.

The Information also says that HTC has been in talks to produce this year’s Nexus phone, though given the new arrangement Google has been aiming for, HTC’s participation has been a controversial topic inside the Taiwanese company’s headquarters.
Overall, this move makes sense, and doesn’t at the same time. Google makes a good amount of its money from services on Apple devices, so it makes sense that Google would want to take control of its own services, and how much money it makes from them. Alternatively, this seems like an odd choice for the Nexus line. In the past, Nexus smartphones have not only showcased the latest versions of Android, but they have also acted as a way to increase brand awareness for OEMs. Nexus phones also gave hardware companies a better look at how to build better Android phones.

Looking for accessories for your Nexus 6P or 5X? Here are our favorites
So you have a shiny new Huawei Nexus 6P or LG Nexus 5X. How do you make the most of it? How do you protect it? It’s been hard sledding trying to find a wide range of accessories so far. These are by no means Samsung or Apple phones where you can find hundreds of cases, screen protectors, and cables in a ton of designs and variations. In a previous post, I declared this USB Type-C dock my favorite Nexus accessory, but here are some more contenders for the crown.
USB Type-C Dock
This is a product I have on the way to my house right now from across the ocean, so I can’t give a first hand
review of it. Users in the Nexus 6P subreddit do seem to like it though. You won’t be getting quick charging speeds from this dock, but that’s fine in my opinion. My phone almost never needs to charge rapidly when it’s sitting on my bedside table, but I would love a nice dock to keep it upright and easy to grab.
You can also daisy chain some cables using this dock. It comes with MicroUSB in and USB Type-A out, perfect for also charging your smartwatch. This dock is very light, so you may need to tape it down to keep it in place, and appears to be case friendly. And for $4, you can’t beat the price.
Ebay: USB 3.1 USB Type-C Dock
For this dock, we’ve picked something a little more substantial. This USB Type-C dock has the Benson seal of approval, which means it will charge your phone rapidly and safely. If you don’t know who Benson is, he’s an engineer at Google who has taken the time to do a ton of product reviews to let the community know what cables and accessories are safe. Some cables don’t use the correct standard and can damage your battery when charging. You can check out his reviews here.
Back to the dock. This NXET dock has a USB Type-C connector that sits on a hinge so it won’t break off with when you grab your phone with a little bit of force. The dock is case friendly, and can also act as a data passthrough to a computer. Perfect for keeping on your desk at home or work. An AC adapter is NOT included here so to get rapid charging, be sure to use the one that came with your phone or another third party adapter that supports quick charging.

I’ve previously written about the next entry in our list in my post where I laid out why it’s my favorite accessory for the Nexus 6P. This USB Type-C dock is a little different from the first two. This dock, instead of giving you somewhere to charge your phone, lets you charge your friends’ phones.
The USB port on the Nexus 6P and 5X allow you to transfer power from your phone to a friend’s. If you have a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable this is as easy as plugging the phones into each other. If you happen to have friends that use the older Micro USB or Apple’s Lightning connector, you can use an adapter like this to charge their phone.
This dock in particular has two USB Type-A and two USB Type-C ports out ports on it, but you can find other docks with things like card readers on them if that’s what you’re looking for. There are a lot of options here, most of them ranging between $20 and $30. I also picked up this cable with the heads for USB Type-C, Lightning, and Micro USB connections so I only need to carry one cable, no matter who needs some juice.

Wraps
If you want to protect that phone from scratches, or give a new look without making it super bulky, a wrap may be in your future. Our own Derrick Miyao was not shy about telling us how much he thought of the dbrand copper skin last month. His exact words were “My Nexus 6P looks better than yours thanks to my dbrand copper skin”, and I have to agree with him.
dbrand just makes great products. I’ve owned at least a dozen of its skins because it make a ton of designs for a multitude of phones and accessory out there. Right now, you can head over to dbrand’s website and grab a skin for the back of your phone for $10. Crazy cheap.
It will let you customize your skin any way you want. If you want the cutout on the back to show the full Nexus branding, just the X or cover the entire backing, you can do that. You can also pick up a colored X in a ton of colors to make endless combinations, or a multi-colored Nexus X. There are other companies that make wraps and skins, but dbrand is the best for a reason. Quality.

Cases are pretty subjective. People have their own personal tastes, and have to weigh the protection vs. looks aspect of each case to decide if it is for them. Here are a few of my favorites.

Verus makes a very nice hybrid case that has a strong bumper around the edges of the thin rubber case, and a raised lip over the front of the screen to protect your Nexus 6P from all sides. The design is refined and you’ll have no issue using your phone in any setting.

Adopted has been on the new Nexus hype train from the beginning. I ordered my Adopted case with my Nexus 6P, and have loved it ever since. Here is the same Adopted case for the Nexus 5X. It provides a lot of protection without bulking up the phone, or hitting your bank account too hard. I can definitely recommend this case from personal use.
This listing is for the Carbon version of the case, but Adopted also has the Quartz version. The Quartz case is pretty cool, but costs about double. The Carbon case is made from elastomer, which is just rubber. The Nexus 5X doesn’t need a ton of help with gripability but this will add some more since it’s rubbery. I’ve never had an issue getting it in and out of my pants pocket, and it helps to keep your phone in place on a slippery surface.

Screen Protectors
Orzly’s screen protectors aren’t perfect, but it’s good enough for me to keep on my daily driver. It make a tempered glass screen protectors for both the Huawei Nexus 6P and the LG Nexus 5X, and coming in at only $9 with prime shipping, it isn’t going to break the bank.
I’d love it if these screen protectors were edge to edge, but sadly it’s not. It stops just short of the edge, but it honestly doesn’t bother me that much. I hardly ever notice anymore. There are cutouts around the speakers with special attention to the proximity sensor on top. The screen protectors have an Oleophobic coating which Orzly says reduces the amount of fingerprints and smudges on the screen. Coming in at only .24mm thick, these shouldn’t interfere with a lip on a case like the ones we linked above.

Cables
There are a ton of cables out there with USB Type-C connectors on one, or both ends of them. If you have any question whether it’s a quality cable, I encourage you to stick to cables that Benson has reviewed. He’s widely recognized as the authority on this. Both of these cables have his seal of approval, which is the only reason I’d recommend them.
If you still want to use your USB Type-A ports and old adapters, then Orzly has the perfect pack for you. Orzly is selling a 4-pack of USB Type-A to USB Type-C cables for $20. This multi-color 4 pack has black, white, blue, and orange cables inside. The cables support USB 3.1 which is important if you also have a Macbook because some accessories require SuperSpeed operations to function, which USB 3.1 enables.
These are high quality cables, and come in at only about $5 per cable, which is impossible to find individually. These get the Benson seal of approval, and my recommendation as well.

Next we have Anker’s USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable. It’s appropriately priced at about $9 with Prime shipping for the 1 meter (3.3 foot) version of the cable. Depending on the power source and adapter you’re plugged in to, you’ll get quick charging and fast data transfer speeds.
This USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable will let you transfer data and power between you and any other USB Type-C device, and comes with an 18 month warranty for peace of mind.

Power Banks
Even though the Nexus 5X and 6P have great battery life, you may still find that you need to charge up when you’re out of the house. Power Banks have caught on in the last few years due to their convenience, portability, and price. The power bank we’re going to look at is one of the best all around packages.

It holds enough power to charge the Nexus 6P about six full times and the Nexus 5X a little under seven and a half times. Not only is it big, but it’s fast too. It has only been 4 years since the original phablet was introduced: A brief look back at the Samsung Galaxy Note
Four years ago this month, Samsung introduced the first phablet with the Samsung Galaxy Note.
In January of 2012, Samsung truly brought us the Next Big Thing with the first Galaxy Note. And big it was with a game changing 5.3″ display.
Without a doubt the dominant smartphone in late 2012 was the iPhone 4s. And it was a great phone, but it had a 3.5″ display! When I think back to the iPhone 4s, I still can’t believe it was just four years ago that I was using that phone. With nothing to lose, Samsung released an experiment in the U.S. at CES 2012, with the Samsung Galaxy Note.
The large 5.3″ display was something mainstream smartphones had not seen before. Many reviewers at the time balked and laughed at the large screen – many people judge too quickly. But customers knew what they wanted. By August of 2012, Samsung had sold over 10 million Galaxy Note smartphones.
In just four fast years, almost all of the major phone manufacturers have large smartphones flagships over 5.3″. And they all owe the size change to Samsung’s willingness to try something radically different.

If you love your large smartphones you need to know who pioneered the large displays, and it was Samsung. The original Samsung Galaxy Note truly changed the design of modern devices. [Deal] Google offering discounts on smartphones and smartwatches for Valentine’s Day
While the next big event everybody will be celebrating is Super Bowl on February 7, Valentine’s Day comes soon after. And Google wants to help you get the perfect tech gift for your loved one this year by offering some “romantic” tech bundles with some sweet discounts.
One of the deals Google is offering is the Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch bundle. If you’re buying the Huawei-made Nexus 6P, what better than to pair it with a Huawei Watch? This bundle will save you $50 off of a Matte Gold Nexus 6P as well as a $50 credit towards the Huawei Watch when you buy any Nexus 6P.

Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X get big temporary discounts in Europe
Following the recent price cut/credit voucher on the Nexus 6P and second price reduction on the Nexus 5X, European Nexus fans are finally getting some discount love too. The Nexus 6P is getting a 100 Euro discount on all models and the Nexus 5X is getting a 80 Euro discount across all models, but only for a limited time.
Unfortunately, the term “Europe” is a little misleading too, with not every EU country seeing the discount quite yet. It might still be coming, but the UK Play Store isn’t currently showing any change to Nexus prices. For everyone with access to the sale though, the discounted Nexus offers begin today, January 26, and continue until February 12, 2016.

With discounts like this, you might want to consider splitting the difference and getting the larger capacity model instead of just taking the discount. For example, you can now buy the 128 GB Nexus 6P for the same price as the 64 GB before the sale and the 64 GB version is now 50 Euro less than the 32 GB version was yesterday. Meanwhile the 32 GB Nexus 5X is currently cheaper than the 16 GB version before the discount.

The Nexus 6P rocks a 5.7 inch AMOLED display. With 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 810 processor, it’s an incredibly tough device to beat in its price range. It runs clean, vanilla Marshmallow right out of the box, and is available in 32, 64, and 128 GB of internal storage. The Huawei Watch is a luxurious Android Wear smartwatch that we praised for being the first to get the round screen right.
