Were OEMs to blame for Android Silver never coming to fruition?

Nexus-6-splashBack in May, we saw news leak from the now retired evleaks that suggested that Google was working on a program for premium Android devices known as Android Silver. The program would offer a pure Google designed Android experience on next-gen hardware and all for a premium price. The program would have been something offered on all the majors carriers, however, about a month before the release of the Nexus 6, word spread that the unconfirmed program was scrapped and it’s possible that the major carriers were to blame.

Re/code learned that Google struggled to convince OEMs to get onboard with the program.

“The company wanted to promote a less-customizable version of the OS that would make it easier for app developers to create one version of its software for the Android devices, instead of having to make many versions for different flavors of Android,”Re/code wrote. “The program was shelved after lukewarm interest from device makers that didn’t want to share its branding with another company or employ such a restricted version of the software.”

According to other reports, Google’s licensing agreements for Android have become tougher for OEMs that push its online services but it looks like Google couldn’t push forward with Silver. Google’s VP of engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer didn’t comment on Silver in a recent interview, rather dodged the unconfirmed program by saying that the “Nexus brand of devices will continue well into the future.” While Google is tightening the reigns on some aspects of Android it looks like the search giant may loosen its grasp on certain aspects.

As was previously stated, Google is thinking about opening up Android Wear, TV, and Auto for customizations. That is, as soon as Google hammers out the basics of each of the respective platforms.

That said, it’s kind of easy writing off a program that never existed. Unlike previous Nexus devices — that skimped in a few areas to cut cost — the new Nexus 6 looks to to be what Android Silver could have been; a premium device with next-gen hardware and a pure Google experience. Android Silver never existed, maybe OEMs weren’t onboard, maybe Google scraped the program and integrated the idea into making the new Nexus. One thing’s for certain, the program that never existed, continues to not do so.

The Nexus 6 is on the Play Store now, but you can only look and only if you’re in the U.S.

Nexus 6 is on the Play StoreEven if you’ve only been half following Android news, you will know that the biggest news of the year so far has been the announcement of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and Android Lollipop. While many of those things are already available for preorder or for preview, the Nexus 6 is still waiting for its “late October” preorder window to open. Still, if you’re a glutton for punishment, and you live in the U.S., you can take a look at the Play Store now and see the Nexus 6 product page already sitting there, teasing you.

As expected, the 32GB version will set you back $649 USD and bumping it up to 64GB will add an additional $50 to make it $699. As we mentioned above, the page is only available to see on the U.S. Play Store, and if the Google support page is anything to go by, the preorders will likely be restricted to the U.S. whenever they open. This is likely so they can get the supply logistics right before expanding to other countries, like what was done for the Nexus 5, but that still doesn’t stop a tear coming to my Australian eye and presumably many of yours too. Hopefully though, it won’t be more than a few weeks wait, and we’ll let you know as soon as that becomes possible.

Nexus 6 is basically Android Silver

silver_nexus

‘Nexmas 2014′ has come and gone, and the previous leaks all seemed to be correct… surprisingly. I truly did not believe that “Shamu” would actually be the Nexus 6. And if it was, I was really expecting a smaller 5.2″ variant to be announced as well. So when the official announcements were live, I was a bit thrown off by how different the Nexus program is this year. Very different indeed.

Earlier this year, a mysterious program called Android Silver was being tossed around news sites, with reporters claiming it would replace the Nexus program entirely. Android Silver was rumored to bring a very premium device or set of devices with stock android to be sold through carriers at a premium price. There’s a lot of Android enthusiasts out there like me who didn’t want to see this happen because of the love for Nexus phones, so I didn’t want to believe it. The rumors began to fade though throughout the year, and eventually it was reported that Android Silver didn’t quite make it past the discussion board as one of the heads of the project left.

I thought that would’ve ended the possibility of Android Silver once and for all, and honestly I was happy about that. I love Nexus phones not only for stock Android, but the high-end hardware and $350 price tag felt perfect to me, even if there were always a couple cut corners. But the year is 2014, and Google’s got a new vision for Android.

Silver….

Everything about the Nexus 6 lines up with what Android Silver was rumored to be. It is a 100% premium device that did not skip anything. Moto X quality build with a metal frame, 2K AMOLED display, Snapdragon 805 chip, 3GB RAM, dual front-facing speakers, big battery… It’s a dream phone. Obviously the monstrous size of it is a turn off for many, myself included, but maybe in the future I’ll warm up to it once I actually hold it. Back to the topic though, Android Silver also included the fact that the phone will be carried by all carriers. The Nexus 6 is heading to all major carriers in the US in November, most likely with an on contract price of $199-299.

silver_phone

Oh hey, more silver!

The Nexus 6 is basically a high-end phablet by Motorola with the Nexus name on it and a new version of Android on it. I have no complaints about this really, I’ve always wanted to see a perfect high-end Nexus phone. The price is just what scares me a little.

silver_google

So much silver!!!

I’ve seen theories around the internet that the Nexus phone in 2015 will be a 5.2 inch model and sort of like an updated Nexus 5. In all honesty, the Nexus 5 is still a champ when it comes to specs and could go another year before a refreshment is necessary. The theory is that Google will alternate between a new Nexus 5 and a new Nexus 6 phablet every year. Next year we will also see a new Nexus 7 instead of a Nexus 9. It’s an interesting theory, and it’s one I can definitely see happening. There’s no way the Nexus 5 will be Google’s last “one-handed” Nexus phone.

What do you guys think? Are you put off by Google ditching the idea of an affordable new Nexus phone in favor of this giant, or are you stoked to get your hands on the beauty that is the Nexus 6?

Nexus device packaging to get new look

Nexus_6_Box

Unboxings are pretty boring, so that’s why I like this one of the Nexus 6. It’s a short Vine, but what’s most interesting is the packaging. It’s all new and the emphasis is on the number. I wonder what they will do with the Nexus Player?

Hit the break for the quick, and I mean very quick, Vine video.

Nexus 6 vs Moto X (2014): A civil war within Motorola

moto x 2014 vs nexus 6

Google has finally announced their long-rumored and leaked Nexus 6. As expected, this phone is being manufactured by Motorola, who also fairly recently announced their newest flagship, the Moto X (2014). So, how do the two newest phones from Motorola compare to one another? Read on to find out!

http://smartphones.findthebest.com/w/61ugskDkIBL

One of the things to note, is that the Moto X (2014) is a more average sized smartphone with a 5.2″ screen, while the Nexus 6 is definitely a phablet with a massive 5.96″ screen. However, the Nexus 6 has a nicer display with a whopping 493 ppi, while the Moto X has 424 ppi. Both are AMOLED displays, so their the same in that regard, which means the Nexus 6 comes out on top here.

The battery is a weird tie, with the Nexus 6 getting way more talk time at 24 hours, while the Moto X has 13 hours. However, the Moto X has 576 hours on standby while the Nexus 6 has 300 hours. The Moto X has a 2,300 mAh battery, while the Nexus 6 has a 3,220 mAh.

The Nexus 6 likely has better performance, with a newer Snapdragon 805 processor, and 3 GB of RAM, and the newest version of Android (though the Moto X should update soon).

Cameras are the same, except the Nexus 6 will have Optical Image Stabilization. The Nexus 6 will have wireless charging, while Moto X will not.

It’s also worth noting that the Moto X has a lot of choice with Moto Maker, allowing you to make your device your own. Moto X also has Moto Voice, Moto Display, and other features. The Nexus 6 will have a feature like Moto Voice, but without the ability to customize a hotword.

To top it all off, the Nexus 6 costs $649 unlocked, while the Moto X costs $499 unlocked.

After all is said and done, it’s hard to choose a winner here. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the Nexus 6 will only have newer software for a little bit as it’s expected the Moto X will be updated very soon. Honestly, I think it comes down to preference. The Nexus 6 is a much bigger device, so you’d have to be looking for a bigger display to get it.

We’ll leave it up to you. Vote in the comments below: Which do you think is a better device, Nexus 6 vs Moto X (2014)

Here are the first camera samples from the Nexus 6

Nexus_6_More_Epic_Shots_Banner

Nexus phones traditionally have average to lousy cameras, and I am not expecting anything different with the Nexus 6. Let’s face it, Motorola makes great hardware, but camera quality is something they never figured out.

Google’s Nexus 6 page has the term “More epic shots” with the 13 MP rear camera and f/2.0 lens. I continue to remain skeptical since I have already seen what the Moto X (2014) is capable of doing.

Now with all that said, the first camera samples have surfaced. As one would expect, the outdoor shots look pretty good, but the indoor shots look okay, with many of them showing some blur.

Take a look at them for yourself and let us know what you think.

Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: The battle of the phablets

Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 14.44.43

So Google have now announced their new flagship device, we can finally see their response to Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. For most, the decision on which device to get is simple as it is the platform that dictates the buying decision, but for some, platform doesn’t play as an important part in the decision.

We’ve stacked up the Nexus 6 against the iPhone 6 Plus in a pure spec comparison to see how the two compare, since the size profile of the two devices are very similar.

One of the main observations of the Nexus 6 is the sheer size of the screen, but despite it having a larger screen than the iPhone 6 Plus, the height of the two devices is almost identical – to give some perspective on the size of the Nexus 6.

The Nexus 6 wins on pretty much every other front, having more RAM, higher clocked CPU, higher PPI, better rear camera, and bigger battery.

So if you’re in the market for a phablet-sized device and don’t mind about OS, then there’s a clear winner here, and that’s the Nexus 6. But even if you’re set on iOS and you’re just here to check out the competition, with the sheer specs of the Nexus 6, combined with Android Lollipop, the competition is looking far more appealing than it was back in the days of Gingerbread, which is probably the last time iOS users dabbled in Android when it was a new platform.

So avid Android users and curious iOS users, the Nexus 6 is the device to buy if you’re in the market for a plus-sized device and pre-orders go live tomorrow, 17th October.

Let us know in the comments if you’re buying the Nexus 6, and if so what device you’re coming from.

Carrier details on the Nexus 6 “When is my carrier getting the Nexus 6?

nexus_6_tile_colors700w

Today Google announced Android Lollipop, and with it a round of new devices including the Nexus 9, Nexus Player, and Nexus 6. While they announced information on when you can preorder the Nexus 9 and Nexus player, they didn’t have any firm information regarding the Nexus 6. However, it seems that this is because it’s up to the carriers.

This page will provide all the updated information we have about the carriers and the Nexus 6, so check back to see updated info regarding Google’s newest handset.

T-Mobile announced on their newsroom page that they will carry the Nexus 6 starting November 12 for 0$ down, and then an equipment installment plan payment of $27.08 for 24 months.

AT&T announced on their newsroom page that they will carry the Nexus 6, noting it’s the first one ever. However, no information is given regarding availability or price at this time.

Sprint announced on their newsroom page that they will be carrying the Nexus 6 available on their Sprint $60 unlimited plan or their Sprint Family Share Pack. There are no specific dates, just that it will be available before the “before the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear”.

US Cellular says “To follow up on the announcement that Google made earlier today, U.S. Cellular will carry the Nexus 6 in November. We are looking forward to bringing the next great Google device to new and existing customers, and we will share additional details as soon as we can”.

No word yet from Verizon, however Google mentioned them in their announcement of the devices here. We’ll be sure to update this when we get that info.

Messenger application will not replace Hangouts on Nexus 6

Nexus 6 press

On many of the press shots of the Nexus 6, there’s a new application in the phone’s dock next to the phone icon. The app is called Messenger, and at first glance, it makes sense to think it’s something that could replace Hangouts and finally merge everything into one single application. However, according to Google, that’s not the case. Not yet, at least.

When asked about whether the new app would handle all communication on the phone, including Hangouts and SMS/MMS, a Google spokesperson had this to say:

Messenger and Hangouts offer users choice, each have their own benefits. Hangouts work great for cross platform (web, iOS, Android) and cross medium communications (video, voice, messaging, SMS). Messenger will be specially designed to be a quick and easy way to send and receive SMS and MMS messages on Android; more to come (Nexus 6 will come with both apps).

As of right now, that looks like Google isn’t going to try to force the two apps to converge, even though Hangouts is in the process of adopting Google Voice’s features. We might still see everything come together as one app in the future, but for right now, Google is keeping it separate. Of course, we’re still anticipating Google announcing their own messaging service soon, so Messenger could be the foundation for that.
