[Deal] Select Nexus 6 models discounted at Amazon

google_nexus_6_screen_trio

There was once a time when Nexus devices were considered affordable. Now they cost just as much as any other flagship device. So any discount on a Nexus device causes consumers to take notice. After all, the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 do start at $399 and $649 respectively. Both of them are, surprisingly, discounted this weekend. We learned yesterday that Best Buy was selling the Nexus 9 for $75 less than normal. Today, we found out that Amazon has select Nexus 6 models discounted. The discounts, which keep changing, are for all models except the Nexus 6 64GB in Midnight Blue. The models that are discounted will keep about 8% in buyers’ pockets.

Google Nexus 6 makes its way to six new countries

nexus 6 first impressions (16 of 21)

As is the case with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 before it, the Nexus 6 was a hot commodity upon announcement and, therefore, subject to supply constraints for months after release. Now that stock has stabilized a bit, getting a Nexus 6 is no longer a difficult affair, and so it seems Google is expanding the device’s reach to new markets.

Starting today, you’ll be able to purchase the Nexus 6 through the Google Store in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and Portugal. This is in addition to the currently available markets of Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

While the Nexus 6 is a solid device, it’s also considerably more expensive than its predecessor. Is it worth the price tag? Be sure to check out our full review to get a better idea of if it is the right device for you.

Android 5.1.0_r3 factory images (LMY47I) arrive for Nexus 5 and Nexus 6

Lollipop Forest

Factory images have just gone up for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6, bearing the build name LMY47I. So what’s new here exactly? What we’re looking at is Android 5.1.0_r3, which appears to contain a few minor bug fixes.

While one would hope that the bug fixes ould be focused on some of the bigger lingering Lollipop issues (such as the notorious memory leak), from the sounds of it the fixes here are almost all related to addressing bugs that deal with SIM card handling. There might be a few other small tweaks and fixes here, but nothing too exciting.

To grab the latest images, you’ll want to click on your device from the list below:

We’ll be sure to update you if and when build LMY47I makes its way to any other members of the Nexus family.

Here’s how to get Android 5.1 on your AT&T Nexus 6

I recently wrote a post on my AT&T Nexus 6 getting Android Lollipop 5.1.  There was some confusion on my part on how to exactly get it right, but after experimenting and having others users confirm this method I can now give clear instructions on how to get the latest update, and let me tell you, the update is worth getting if you are tired of your phone rebooting, having poor battery life, or experiencing other random bugs.

1.  Backup your phone – go to “settings” and then go to “backup & reset.”  This will allow you to reset your phone to the exact way it was before the restore.  Select an account to backup your phone, and then click to back it up.

2.  Take out your Sim card.  You can do this with a Sim ejector tool or something small like a bent paperclip.  if you leave your Sim card in you will not be prompted to get the update.  You MUST remove it.

3.  Restore your phone – go to “settings” and then go to “backup & reset” and hit “factory reset data.”

4. When you are restoring your phone, you can restore from the latest backup.  Once you do these steps you will be prompted to update your phone to Android 5.1.  This update is not due out until June, so if you are tired of the bugs, I highly suggest you get this update.

Qualcomm pits its Quick Charge 2.0 tech against conventional chargers in this video

Quick Charge 2.0 technology has become an increasingly common feature of high-end smartphones this past year or so, offering faster charging speeds to get your phone back up and running ask quickly as possible. If you’re interested in just how much faster Quick Charge 2.0 is compared with regular chargers, you should check out Qualcomm’s latest video test (above).

Qualcomm took six Nexus 6’s, which feature a large 3,200mAh battery, and charged them from empty, using a regular 5 volt / 1 amp charger, 5 volt / 2 amp charger, and a Quick Charge 2.0 charger, which should be providing up to 3 amps of current, according to the specification.

As you might expect, the additional power available via Quick Charge 2.0 allows the device to reach 50 percent battery life rather quickly, which took just 40 minutes. The 2 amp charger managed to fill the battery up 32 percent, while the 1 amp charger struggled with just 22 percent after 40 minutes. This is pretty useful to know, given that some flagship smartphones struggle to provide a full day of heavy usage.

The specification supports a small range of different voltages and currents on different devices and chargers. You can find 2.5 and 3 amp compatible chargers and phones, capable of working with voltages from 5 to 12. Not every phone and charger combination will necessarily charge quite as fast as the Nexus 6 in this video and real world results will vary depend on the battery capacity, but it should be pretty close.

To make use of Quick Charge 2.0, you will require a compatible phone and a charger capable of pumping out enough current. Don’t worry about the branding, a Motorola charger will work fine with Quick Charge on an HTC phone or other branded handset, and vice versa.

If you would like a closer look at how Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 works, be sure to check out our technology breakdown.

AT&T pushing Android 5.1 to its Nexus 6

nexus_6_att_rear

The launch of Android 5.1 was met with software updates for various Nexus 6 variants. The handset on T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon networks are all roaming the country with the latest version of Android. The Nexus 6 for AT&T, however, was left without the update until now.

Various owners of the device operating on AT&T’s network are reporting that the carrier is pushing the Android 5.1 software update to their handsets.

While forcing an update has been questioned for years, there does seem to be a workaround to get the update as quickly as possible. Performing a factory reset seems to cause the software update to appear during the setup process.

AT&T Nexus 6 starts to receive Android Lollipop 5.1

I have been using a Nexus 6 for the past four weeks, and I can tell you the bugs are getting old.  Luckily for me, AT&T started its roll out of Android Lollipop 5.1 as my own phone received the update last night.  The build number is LMY4D7, and it comes with stability improvements, supposed improved battery life, bug fixes, and the ability to lock your phone and keep it locked even if the phone somehow manages to get wiped.

If you’re wondering how to check for the update, the phone should check itself whenever you hop onto a WiFi network, but you can still manually check by hitting your “settings” button, followed by “about phone”, and then finally followed by “system updates”.

I can already tell you that the phone is running much smoother, battery life has not changed much in the short time I have been using my phone, but overall I am happy with the update.  For the record, I am using a Nexus 6 purchased directly through AT&T, as I could not wait for a Google version since the phone was on back-order for so long,

T-Mobile starts to roll out Android Lollipop 5.1 to Nexus 6

T-Mobile is rolling out Android Lollipop 5.1 to their Nexus 6 users today.  Your phone should automatically check if there is a new version of software available when you hop on WiFi, but if you just can’t wait, hit your settings button, followed by “about phone”, then click “system updates.”

The latest update will enable Google’s new security feature which allows your phone to stay locked, even if the would be criminal wipes your phone.  Also included in the update are improved software stability and various bug fixes, which we know Android 5.01 is far from perfect with bugs like random restarts and poor battery life.  The file size is 409MB, and as of right now can only be downloaded over WiFi.  Download over cellular data will come at a later time.  It’s a rather clever way for T-Mobile to limit data downloads even though many of their plans offer unlimited data.
