Google sending gifts to Project Fi subscribers who order Nexus 6

Nexus_6_Official_4573

Google appears to have decided to reward consumers who chose to jump in on Project Fi and purchased a Nexus 6 from the company in the process. Some new reports from users receiving their new smartphones from Google indicate the company is including a case, a pair of earbuds with a splitter, and a 6,000 mAh external battery.

A thread about the free gifts on Reddit reveals not all Nexus 6 buyers are receiving the free gifts even though they too signed up for Project Fi, so it is not clear how Google is picking who gets the gifts and who does not. Thus far though, no users who just purchased a SIM card to go in a Nexus 6 purchased elsewhere for use on Project Fi have received anything extra. One user claims Google support confirmed they were sending out the gifts but would not reveal any details about how long the promotion may last or how many users have been selected.

For now at least, the Nexus 6 is the only device that will work on Project Fi. Subscribers have two choices for securing their hardware – order it through Google when they sign up for service or buy the smartphone somewhere else and get a SIM card from Google to install.

Google I/O 2015: What you may have missed

Unless you were residing under a rock last week, you are surely now aware of last week’s yearly developer conference, Google I/O. Well, in case you happened to not be available, or need a place to catch up on everything that was announced or talked about, AndroidGuys is here to save the day. From Android M to new Developer Tools and the new Photos service, there was surely a lot that was covered during the Google-fest, known as Google I/O 2015.

Android M

While this didn’t come as a surprise to many, Google decided to show off their latest iteration of Android, to the world. Android Lollipop, announced and released last year, obviously brought the Material Design UI design change to the forefront. Android M, because Google did NOT announce the name of the latest version, seems to bring a slew of additional features to the forefront. It may seem like an incremental update at first, but rest assured, there are more than a few changes that can be found with Android M.

Granular Permissions

The first big change announced was the addition of Granular Permissions with apps across the whole OS. What this means is that you will be able to approve or deny any permissions that a specific app may need to use in order to function correctly, or want the ability to use. Currently, users agree to all the permissions necessary for an app to be installed, upon installation from the Google Play Store. Whoever reads all those, every time you download an app, is a brave soul. I literally equate it to reading the terms and conditions of downloading any type of software update from Apple. TLDR.

Something to note in regards to these permissions changes, is that Google is paving the way for developers to build their apps that still work, even if a user denies any specific permissions request within the app. That’s a nice little touch to ensure that your apps will all still work even if you deny permissions.

Doze Mode

Everybody complains about battery life, regardless of what device you are using. iOS or Android. Well with Android M, Google is bringing a new feature known as Doze Mode, which is essentially puts your phone into a deeper sleep mode than what is currently available. No worries, Google still thought about the fact that you are expecting to receive notifications and such throughout the day, so those will still come through as normal. Google is claiming that Doze Mode could increase the battery life of a device, two-fold. Doubled the battery life, without having a bigger battery, is an interesting concept, so it will be interesting to see how it works in RL.

USB Type-C

This seems to be the year of USB Type C, with Apple introducing the MacBook, which has only the USB Type C port on it. The latest rendition of the ChromeBook Pixel also has two USB Type C ports on it, so why not introduce this technology on our mobile devices. Well Google did just that today. While they didn’t mention any devices that will include the USB Type C charging port, Google still explained what this will mean when an Android device is released with this new charging port.

Imagine this. You need to charge your phone up, but all you have is your tablet. (Of course this is a hypothetical situation, just stick with me here.) You remember that you got both of these awesome devices from Google and they both have USB Type C. So you plug the USB to USB from your tablet into your phone, and boom. Your phone is now charging. Well that’s what the introduction of USB Type C brings to the table now. On top of the fact that our Android devices will FINALLY have a reversible cable, reducing the frustration in trying to stick it in the right way.

Android Pay

Just about everyone has, or has had Google Wallet. Just about everyone has also heard about how Apple Pay works in unison with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ along with the fingerprint scanner. Well Android M is bringing Android Pay with built-in fingerprint support for those devices that have a fingerprint scanner already, and of course with any new devices.

Similar to Apple Pay, Android Pay will be built right in to the OS, so that you can get up and running right away, out of the box. Google was also to gain support from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile to allow Android Pay to be installed, without restrictions, right out of the box.

As for stores that are on board, Google announced that there are over 700,000 retailers that Android Pay will be accepted, across the US. Essentially, Android Pay will be supported wherever you can find an NFC payment station at your retailer of choice.

Google is also building into Android M, the ability to “Buy with Android Pay”, which will allow users to pay just by tapping the icon, and your items will be instantly paid for through the credit/debit card that is attached to your Android Pay account.

App State Backup

Any apps that will be installed on devices running Android M, will automatically back up to Google’s cloud. This was introduced so that you can have your apps backed up and ready to go whenever you switch to a new device, or perform a full-wipe on your device. I can find this extremely useful for us geeks that switch phones like we change socks, but also for those clumsy one’s who need go through phones like diapers.

The Android M Developer Preview was made available a few hours after the keynote had ended. It is compatible with the Nexus 5, 6, 9 and Nexus Player. We can expect to see Android M fully released in Q3 of this year, while there is a road-map to give users an idea of when to expect the next versions of the Developer Preview.

Google Photos

Before getting into the smaller announcements from yesterday’s event, let’s get into the other big announcement from the Google I/O 2015 keynote. Google Photos. It’s finally here, and you can expect to see a slew of articles claiming that this is the beginning of the end for Google+, but we know differently. Of course, the redesigned Google Photos isn’t anything that we didn’t already know about, but now we can finally play around with the features. The big feature, for me at least, was the cross-syncing between Android, the Web, and iOS.

Bundled with unlimited storage, Google is touting Google Photos as a backup service, more than anything else. However, there is a catch for that. Your photos will have a 16 Megapixel cap, and videos will have to be uploaded at 1080p or lower. There is an option, upon start up, to use your Google Drive storage capacity, which is nice if you have boat loads of extra storage sitting around, but the “unlimited storage” option will be just fine for most.

Depending upon how granular you get with your photo organization, things can be pretty rough sometimes. Google Photos is hoping to help out with some of that, by being able recognize and categorize your photos automatically for you. Photos will be able to identify people, places, landscapes, food, and will categorize those photos for you automatically. While Photos seems to walk the walk, it’s only a matter of time before we know if it can talk the talk.

Users can access their photos across the web, iOS, and Android, so that you have a copy of your favorite pictures, no matter where you’re at. If you want to share one of those photos, you will be able to pull up the sharing menu, and be able to get a link specific to the picture that you are attempting to share.

Another feature announced with Google Photos is your new Assistant. Nope, not a Google Now replacement, or anything like that. Instead, think of it as a modified version of Auto-Awesome for Google+. Your Assistant will help you create albums, custom stories, or movies, and what makes this even better, is that you don’t have to wait for Auto-Awesome to do its thing. You can make these adjustments to your photos, yourself.

Obviously these are just some of the many changes and announcements that Google brought to the Android world at Google I/O 2015. What are some of your favorite announcements? Was it the separation of Google Photos from Google+? Or was it the announcement of Android M and the release of the first batch of Developer Previews? Let us know what you think about everything in the comments below.

See Google’s clothing-based Project Jacquard in action

project_jacquard_google_io_2015_TAInterested in seeing Google’s ambitious Project Jacquard in action? Fortunately, Google had a small demonstration set up at I/O to show off a very simple way that smart clothing can be used, and we’ve got a hands on video for you.

The video demonstrates how simple it is to tap a patch of clothing to play and pause your music, and how the swiping gestures will allow you to skip through songs and adjust the volume on a connected smartphone. Google of course uses a Nexus 6 to show off everything in action, but it works extremely well.

It might be awhile before we start seeing jackets with integrated volume controls, but it’s something to look forward to. For everything else that’s happening at I/O 2015, check out our full coverage of the event.

Nexus 6 may get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update with T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling sometime soon

nexus 6 first impressions (9 of 21)

A good amount of Nexus devices have already begun receiving the update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, though the update for Google’s most recent flagship is still nowhere to be found. No, it’s not the most important update that Google has ever pushed out, though it would still be nice to see it make its way to the Nexus 6 in a timely fashion. As it turns out, we might not have to wait much longer, according to Des, a Product Evangelist at T-Mobile.

A little over a week ago, Des mentioned on Twitter that T-Mobile and Google are still working on bringing Wi-Fi calling to the Nexus 6, and that the update would begin testing within 7-10 days. Take a look:

Now that it’s been ten days, many folks are probably wondering the status of the update. Thankfully, Des came back this morning to give everyone a little teaser on what’s to come for the weekend.

We’ll have to wait and see whether or not Google and T-Mobile have worked out all of the bugs associated with this update. But as for right now, Nexus 6 owners can expect to see Android 5.1.1 roll out sometime this weekend.

T-Mobile Nexus 6 now said to be getting the WiFi calling update

Nexus_6_Official_4573

T-Mobile’s popular social media figure, Des on Twitter has subtly hinted that the WiFi calling update for the Nexus 6 could be rolling out starting today. His tweet said the following – “This is shaping up to be a very Happy Memorial day weekend… #Nexus6

While he’s not making it obvious that the update is being sent out, the responses to the tweet mention that it is currently being sent out to the devices. Also the hashtag leaves nothing to the imagination.

We’re yet to see anything on the company’s site at the moment, but we’ll update you with more information as we have it. There shouldn’t be any other changes bundled with the update as the carrier is only enabling the WiFi calling feature.

So T-Mobile Nexus 6 users, are you seeing the update yet?

Limited-edition Skrillex Live Case series launched by Google, brings more than protection and art to your device

Google is always doing something crazy. Often times the things they are working on are hidden in the depth of the Googleplex only to be unveiled when they are good and ready to show it off. A recent collaboration that Google has been involved in has just been announced and boy is it an interesting one. The search giant has partnered up with electronic music sensation Skrillex to bring a series of limited edition cases for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Skrillex Live Case from Google

The Skrillex Live Case is much more than an artistic shell that depicts the Grammy-winning producers life long fascination with space though. With Google’s help, the Skrillex Live Case brings something pretty outstanding to your device, a button that gives you VIP access to Skrillex content and an a companion live wallpaper. Again, not just your average live wallpaper that shows some crazy colors or light flows. No, the live wallpaper will update over the course of your day depicting stunning images of Earth from the stratosphere. Where it gets a little bit cooler is that the images are being shot with a special designed satellite balloon that Google and Skrillex designed, names after his dog Nanou, and sent up not to long ago.

Another killer bonus to the project is that once the satellite balloon has completed its mission, a lucky fan will be able to actually win the darn thing and it is signed by Skrillex. As for the VIP access to Skrillex content, the buyers of the Skrillex Live Case will be given access to a free OWSLA album from the Play Store. You will also get updates about Skrillex sent directly to your phone. The button that is built into the case launches Skrillex’s music feed on YouTube. The button is customizable too. Meaning you can set it to open your camera, other apps or web links.

The Skrillex Live Case limited edition cases are all individually numbered and are available on the Google Play Store starting today through the end of June for $40. If Skrillex isn’t your style, don’t get all down in the dumps as Google states there are other collaborations already in the works that they can’t wait to tell us about.

Hit the Google Store to check out the cases and an order placed. I am thinking the Lil Planet one would look killer on my Note 4.

Google announces the limited-edition Skrillex Live Case

Editions is a new series from Google in which “creative collaborations” are contracted to design limited-edition cases.

The first creative collaborator is Skrillex. Skrillex has produced three designs based on out of this world motivations.

Skrillex Live Case

With the Live Cases, you get a bit more than a strangely designed case.

First, you get a live wallpaper from Skrillex’s satellite that he named “Nanou” after his dog. During the day, Nanou  sends your phone photographs of Earth from the stratosphere. At night, the wallpaper will send images of constellations that are visible from your current location.

On top of that, you will get “VIP access to Skrillex content”. From the official Android blog:

Fans who get the Live Case will get early access to a free OWSLA album from Google Play and Skrillex updates sent directly to their phones. A shortcut button built-in on the Live Case gives you one-touch access to Skrillex’s music feed on YouTube. The button can also be customized to open your favorite apps, launch your phone camera or go to Skrillex’s website.

Kari Clark, Senior Manager, Google Accessories

The Live Case also has a nifty little button on the back of the case that allows for quick access to your favorite app or Skrillex’s website, Google feels the need to point out that the last one requires internet connection.

This cases are also individually numbered like any other limited-edition run of anything. Once again, there are three different designs to pick from and each will run you $40. The Live Case is available for the following phones:

  • Nexus 6
  • Nexus 5
  • Galaxy S6
  • Galaxy S5
  • Galaxy Note 4
