CharityBuzz to Auction Off Unique ‘Celebration’ Apple-1, Could Fetch Up to $1M
During the summer of 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created and sold 175 Apple-1 computers, marking the launch of what is now one of the most valuable, influential companies in the world. Only 60 or so of those original machines are still in existence, fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.
This Monday, auction site CharityBuzz is set to auction off one of the rarest Apple-1 computers, which could fetch up to a million dollars.
Dubbed the “Celebration” Apple-1 by computer historian Corey Cohen, the machine CharityBuzz will sell features a blank “green” PCB board that was never sold to the public and was not part of a known production run. CharityBuzz describes it as an original Apple-1 ACI cassette board, pre-NTI, with Robinson Nugent sockets, a period correct power supply, and an early Apple-1 BASIC cassette labeled and authenticated by original Apple employee Daniel Kottke.

It also comes with original Apple-1 manuals, original marketing materials, and Apple-1 and Apple-1 ACI Cassette Board schematics, described as the “most complete documentation set” of all known Apple-1 boards.
According to Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple, “Only a few Apple I’s, on blank (not green) PC boards, may have been manually soldered, although I’m not sure of it. We arranged the wave soldering with the company that made the PC boards. But we may not have wanted to wave solder a run (of maybe 10 or more board) until we manually soldered one or two to debug them.”
The Apple-1 is not in working condition but could be restored to full functionality with minor tweaks, something Cohen recommends against in order to preserve the board’s uniqueness. “The Apple-1 board is a not just a piece of history, but a piece of art,” he says.

CharityBuzz’s auction will kick off this Monday, July 25, and will last through August 25. Interested bidders or those who want to follow the auction can check out the auction landing page, which features a countdown to kickoff and full details on the Celebration Apple-1.
The Celebration Apple-1 will be on display at the Vintage Computer Festival West, set to take place on August 6 and 7 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. CharityBuzz believes the Apple-1 could fetch up to $1 million, which would be one of the highest prices an Apple-1 has sold for at auction. Ten percent of proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Mr. Robot fans, prepare to immerse yourselves in the world of virtual reality. Within, an app that offers a number of VR experiences, has teamed up with the Mr. Robot creative team to make an exclusive, one time-only VR presentation. The 12-minute experience debuts today, July 21, at 1:45 p.m. ET.

The film will disappear right after its initial showing in the Within app, though according to The Verge, it will be back up again, permanently, next week.
It should be noted that while you can view the Mr. Robot VR experience through a PC-connected headset like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, it’s also available for those that own a Gear VR or Google Cardboard headset. Additionally, the experience can be viewed in the Within app as a 360-degree video, without the need for a VR headset.
You can grab the Within app from the Google Play Store now, and download the Mr. Robot experience in the app ahead of its broadcast.
Google Play Books ‘Bubble Zoom’ makes it easier to read comics
Google Play Books become more comic-friendly last year with addition of vertical scrolling. At this year’s Comic-Con, Google is announcing another handy feature that will be reading the illustrated panels even easier. The tool is called Bubble Zoom and as you might expect, it zooms in on those speech bubbles as you read. Before now, you had to use two fingers to zoom like you would in other apps. When reading graphics-heavy comic panels, that isn’t an ideal solution. Thanks to the new tool, you can enlarge the text with a tap while still gazing at a full-screen view of the page.
What’s more, when you’re reading one-handed on your phone, you can use the volume buttons to navigate back and forth. Bubble Zoom is part of the most recent version of Google Play Books, and yes, only Android users are privy to the feature right now. If you’re using Google’s software, you can employ a technical preview of the reading tool while browsing DC and Marvel volumes that support it. Google will be collecting feedback on the update and plans to make it available on all digital comics and manga. The company says it has to teach its machine learning algorithms how to read more styles before expanding its supported library.

Soon you can have your student loans serviced through Amazon
Amazon is the best place to shop for Star Trek: The Original Series on Blu-ray at 3 AM as well as a pallet of Surge to down while watching at the same time (not that I’ve done this.) But soon enough it will also be the same place you can apply for student loans.
Through a partnership with Wells Fargo, Amazon is making its debut in the private student loan business by offering a 0.5 percent interest rate discount to all members of Prime Student. The special discount program for students is offered to college attendees at a lower rate than regular Prime. If you’re currently going through Wells Fargo for your own student loans, you can take advantage of the upcoming deal for new loans and loan refinancing as well.
This isn’t the company’s first foray into the world of loans, but it will be the first when it comes to the educational realm. If this is something that interests you and college is in your future, you can go ahead and sign up for Prime Student, which will run you $49 a year in contrast to the regular program’s $99 price tag.
