Defect watch: Some Nexus 6 owners reporting back cover coming unglued

Nexus-6-defective-back-plate-640x410

If you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on Google’s Nexus 6, be weary of a defect that’s been happening to a few owners of the handset. Multiple users around the web have been reporting that the Nexus 6’s back cover is coming unglued. Under further investigation, a Reddit user experiencing this problem checked under the back cover to find that the battery was expanding, causing the cover to come undone. Motorola commented on one Twitter user’s post saying that they’ve been “seeing a few” devices come unglued. Some users are commenting that the battery is, in fact, expanding over a few weeks’ time, while others are saying that they’ve noticed it right when they take the device out of the box.

Since this is obviously a manufacturing defect, if you or anyone you know have been experiencing this problem, we suggest you contact Motorola’s Customer Care team to get the device replaced. But be careful if you’ve been seeing this problem on your handset, as defective batteries are a big safety hazard. If it helps at all, it seems as though Motorola and the carriers involved have been very good about replacing the defective units so far. So, you’ll likely have your new replacement phone up and running in no time.

Do you know anyone who’s been experiencing this defect? Let us know if you’ve had any problems.

Motorola promises to push Lollipop OTA soon

IMG5

Luciano Carvalho, one of the software engineers at Motorola, announced a quick update on his Google+ wall as to when Motorola devices from 2013 and 2014 will be getting the Lollipop OTA. People are getting really impatient still stuck on KitKat.

This is no news that some people across the world are getting Lollipop based OTA pushes on their Moto devices. Luciano revealed that is just a limited soak test roll out to check if there are any unwarranted bugs that might slip in the final release and promises that this update will be pushed to a wider audience once they get a green signal.

Users of the 1st generation of Moto devices need to update their Motorola Update services to receive the update. If it’s not showing on your list of compatible apps or does not show any kind of update, be assured that it will be soon.

According to Luciano, they are currently working to crush most of the bugs since 5.0 was way too buggy and porting an entire update to other devices gives birth to even more bugs since the way things interact are different for different devices and Google only validates stuff for Nexus Devices.

Anyhow, Moto chaps can expect the update soon enough.

Some Moto G devices starting to receive Android 5.0.2 Lollipop

Moto G 2014-16

Hot on the heels of the news that Lollipop will be coming soon to various Motorola 2013 and 2014 devices, it now seems that Android 5.0.2 Lollipop has started to roll out on some 2nd generation Moto G handsets.

According to Jose G. from the USA, his 2nd generation Moto G has received an update. Previously he was running 5.0.1 which was build 22.21.25, but now after the over-the-air update he is running Android 5.0.2, which is build 22.21.28.

The roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop seems to have been quite slow. In my house we have a Nexus 7 (2012) and a first generation Moto G. Neither have received the update from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.0.x.

The apparent slowness of the roll out could be to do with a huge memory leak in Android 5.0, which many users are saying causes big problems. According to comments left here on the Android Authority web site, some users aren’t having any issues at all, however some are being hit quite bad.  I was wondering why Lollipop was closing apps and behaving badly. I was wishing I could go back to 4.4.4. That release was so much smoother.” While Oktar added, “I have to reboot my Nexus 5 every 4-5 days!!! It’s awful!!!”

Until now the only device to get Android 5.0.2 was the Nexus 7 (2012). All other devices were on Android 5.0.1. Let’s hope that the new Android 5.0.2 that is starting to roll out is smoother than 5.0.1!

Have you got a Motorola device? Any updates? Please let me know in the comments below.

Android 5.0.2 becoming available for some 2nd Gen Moto G owners

Android 5.0.2 has so far only been made available for the 2012 Nexus 7. While there has been no indication of whether this seemingly spurious software update will eventually reach other Nexus devices, it appears the device next in line to receive the update is the humble 2nd Gen Moto G. Users in the U.S. […]

Lollipop coming soon to Motorola 2013 and 2014 devices

google-motorola-logo

Owners of Motorola devices made in 2013 and 2014 have reason to be excited, a software engineer for the company has confirmed that Android Lollipop will be rolling out to your hardware ‘soon.’

First of all: peace! :-) There is so much anger floating around this topic, I just want to reassure we’re working really hard on it, and, as promised, our Moto products from 2014 and 2013 will be updated to Lollipop really soon.

– Luciano Carvalho Google+

We can’t be sure what version number of Android Lollipop will roll out to which devices. Motorola has a great track record with Android updates and they already have the latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop out to their flagship devices, including the Moto X (2014) and back to the Moto G (2013) GPe.

Nexus 4 to get Android Lollipop

While there is no exact time frame for the release, the same announcement recommends that all 1st generation device owners check for an update to the Motorola Update Services app, free from the Google Play Store. If the update does not show, or shows as not available for your unit, don’t worry, it’ll be there soon.

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit is a reference to a Motorola Android 5.0.2 Lollipop soak test, available to only certain devices in a short list of locations around the globe. So far, we’ve only really seen a 5.0.2 reference for the 2012 WiFi Nexus 7, which still has not received an OTA Lollipop itself.

Time for you to sound off, what Motorola device do you have on hand, anxiously awaiting Android Lollipop?

Motorola Still Working on Lollipop for 2013 and 14 Products

verizon-moto-xMotorola is working on putting the finishing touches on the Moto X Lollipop update. It turns out, 5.0 had some bugs originally, which means that Motorola had its work cut out for itself. Now, soak tests are starting around the world, which means we are in penultimate phase of an update rollout.

If you own a 1st generation Moto X, you need to make sure you have the latest version of Motorola Updates Services from the Google Play Store. That update may involve a wait as well, but it’s important to remain vigilant with checking back with the app in order to get the update.

Motorola is also begging for patience from its loyal users. As anyone with some technical knowledge knows, updating an operating system is an arduous task, and Google makes the OS to work on Nexus devices, not Motorola devices. However, if there are no more huge bugs, we can expect the update soon.

What do you think about Motorola’s handling of the update? Not nearly fast enough, or will you cut the manufacturer some slack? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.
