Survey finds 50% of phones activated last quarter came from Apple, 26% from Samsung
Apple trumped all other smartphone manufacturers last quarter based on consumers activating a device. The usual Android foes were all far behind Apple with Samsung leading the way. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) conducted a survey with five hundred subjects in the United States and aimed to find which phone brands were most popular among activations. The devices, both old and new, were activated between October and December of last year.
Samsung trailed Apple by 24% and that was the closest any company came to catching the clan in Cupertino. After that, the numbers dropped off significantly. The third place company was LG with 11% and Motorola finished fourth at 4%. Rounding out the bottom was HTC (2%), Nokia (2%), Amazon (1%), and “other” with 4%. BlackBerry, who may or may not be facing an acquisition in the near future, had no activations from the survey.
Josh Lowitz, the co-founder of CIRP, explained that the loyalty of Apple customers is far greater than that of Samsung and LG’s. He said:
“iPhones drew from loyal Apple customers, with 86% of buyers upgrading from an older iPhone. Samsung and LG saw far lower loyalty rates, with 25% of Samsung owners and 18% of LG owners who activated a phone in the quarter switching to an iPhone.”

Lollipop is now coming to the Moto G in India and the US
On Google+, Motorola stated that an Android 5.0 Lollipop update is coming to the Moto G in India and the US. While it’s only a staggered rollout, it’s at least good to hear it is coming.
Specifically, both generations of the Moto G are being updated in India, and the second generation Moto G will receive the update in the US. This comes after a tease from Motorola that said Lollipop would come to devices it released in 2013 and 2014.

Lollipop rolling out to Moto G (1st gen and 2nd gen) in India, 2nd gen in US

Motorola first began pushing out Lollipop to some Moto G users in December, followed by another trial earlier this month, but a wider rollout is beginning just now.
According to an official update from Motorola, Lollipop (5.0.2) is now rolling out to both generations of the Moto G in India, as well as to the 2nd gen Moto G in the United States.
#Lollipop is rolling out in phases to #MotoG (2nd Gen) in US & #MotoG (1st & 2nd Gen) in India. Look for the notification on your device!
— Motorola Mobility (@Motorola) January 23, 2015
However, while only the US and India are specifically mentioned in the tweet, 1st gen Moto G Reddit and XDA users from other parts of the world, including Brazil and Europe, are reporting that they received the OTA update today. So it’s a good idea to check for yourself from Settings>About Phone>System Updates.
The update will bring the stock Lollipop experience to users of Motorola’s wildly popular budget device, including a new way of handling notifications, new recent apps interface, and many visual changes.

Google lists the Motorola Turbo Charger as “coming soon” in the Play Store
Devices like the Nexus 6, Motorola DROID Turbo, and HTC One (M8) are capable of enhanced charging with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology. The special chargers, when paired with supported devices, powers them much quicker than ordinary chargers. Both Motorola and HTC have released their own Quick Charge 2.0 chargers, but availability has been somewhat limited. The Motorola Turbo Charger will soon be available in the Play Store. When? No one is sure. It is a good sign, however, that its status reads “coming soon.” The price listed is $34.99.
In the meantime, you can purchase the Turbo Charger directly from Motorola.

Moto 360 hits Google Play for those in Germany, France, Canada and 4 others

The Moto 360 might not be the only circular Android Wear watch in town these days, but it still remains one of the best AW watches around, despite shortcomings like its flat-tire display and less than perfect battery performance. For those in the US, the Moto 360 has been available both through Google Play, the Motorola webstore and many other retailers for quite a while now. For those outside the US, while there are many channels (including Moto’s store) that offer up the watch, Google Play hasn’t been an option — until today.
Google has now updated its support page to list several new countries where the Moto 360 is hitting Google Play. Specifically we are talking about Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. While the addition of Google Play as a retailer might not make a big difference from some, it’s still nice to see Google offering the watch directly in more markets.
Keep in mind that just because the support page has been updated doesn’t mean all these markets now have the Moto 360 ready for purchase. We are hearing reports that several of the above countries merely have a listing that says “coming soon”, though hopefully it isn’t long before the watch is stocked and ready to go.
Motorola updating long list of apps
Motorola is in the process of updating a long list of apps for their devices. Most of the updated apps have not yet surfaced on Google Play, but APK files are available for download and install. Early feedback suggests users are having the most success installing the updates on Motorola Moto X 2014 devices, though some of them will install on other Motorola smartphones. Details are still sparse regarding the changes to the apps, but it looks like Motorola is prepping them for Android Lollipop including a dose of Material Design. Reports indicate some of these updated apps are included in some Lollipop soak tests that are underway.
The apps that have been updated thus far include:
- Moto Voice (7.0.13.1)
- Moto (2.2.8)
- Motorola Gallery (304100)
- Motorola Camera (5.0.7.1)
- Motorola Help (1.4.32)
- Motorola Update Services (7.0.1)
- Motorola Contextual Services (5.18.063)
- Motorola Migrate (1.6.0.30)
- Assist (2.6.1)
If you have a Motorola smartphone, you can hit the source link to access the APK files. As indicated, compatibility with Motorola devices seems to vary, so do not be surprised if you install one and cannot get it to work.

2nd gen Moto E and Moto G LTE revealed by UK e-retailer
Last week, we got a little idea about the 2nd generation Moto E through a FCC filing, but today a UK e-retailer has provided more clues.
Argos mistakenly posted the information, but thankfully it was spotted before they pulled it. The new Moto E will have a 4.3-inch qHD display. Don’t mistake that with a QHD display. A qHD display is a paltry resolution of 960 x 540. It will be powered by a quad-core CPU, likely a Snapdragon 210 or 410, 8 GB of internal storage, microSD slot for expanded storage, LTE, and a 5 MP rear camera. It will measure 129.9×66.8 and will be 12.3mm thick. Pricing is GBP 110 or $167.
The 2nd gen Moto G with LTE was already introduced, but it hasn’t hit the UK just yet. Argos did post the pricing a little to quickly and it’s GBP 160 or $243.

Owners reporting issues with the Nexus 6 back cover popping off and battery swelling
On paper, the Nexus 6 is one of the most alluring devices out there for Android enthusiasts, but that’s only if you can get your hands on one. Lack of stock has rendered it almost as rare as the abominable snowman, however it looks like what few of them are out there could be suffering […]

Nexus 6 owners try to hold it together amidst new problem with devices
Reports are starting to trickle out onto the Internet about Nexus 6 devices that are falling apart. Owners are reporting the back covers are coming off of the units although the reason has not yet been identified. In some cases it appears to be a problem with the glue that Motorola used to affix the back covers. However, others are reporting their batteries are swelling to the point they cause the covers to pop off.
The reports that have come in so far have varied as to how soon owners of the Nexus 6 are experiencing problems. Some buyers report their devices were showing signs of separation out of the box when they received their new device. Others are reporting the problem takes some time to develop. In an unfortunate turn for Motorola, reports of similar problems have also started to surface for the Moto X 2014 and the Motorola DROID Turbo.
Motorola appears to be aware of the problem even though they have not come out with a public statement. In response to a tweet directed to Motorola Support, they did acknowledge they are “seeing a few” devices being returned with defective back covers.
If you do notice the problem with your Nexus 6, you can try to contact the retailer where you bought your device and see if you can get a refund. Choosing a replacement may result in a refurbished unit being provided to you if you go that route. In either case, it is not clear whether the replacement unit may be subject to the same issue.
