New leak reveals internal heat pipe for Moto X (2016)
Although the next generation Motorola flagship, the Moto X (2016), is thought to be on track for a second half of 2016 release, the rumors and leaked images are already getting started. We have already seen one leak that revealed a radical departure may be in store from Motorola as they head down the path of a metal and glass chassis for the next version Moto X. A newly leaked image shows some innovative thinking on Motorola’s part, this time with regards to the internals of the device which appears to incorporate a heat pipe.
Heat pipes are not a new technology, but there have been few applications in mobile devices, although Samsung is reportedly looking at the same concept for the Galaxy S7. The need for some creative cooling solutions may be traced back to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip that is the rumored selection for the the Moto X (2016). Smartphone manufacturers already went through one round of heat “issues” with the Snapdragon 810.
Supposedly the Snapdragon 820 was going to avoid that situation, but thus far indications are that heat management is still a significant issue. Thus we see designers exploring solutions like heat pipes. In the case of Motorola, managing heat may also be part of the reason to shift to a metal and glass chassis design.
On a related note, sources have compared this latest leaked image with the last one and have noted the rear-facing speaker grille seems to match up between the two devices. Since this is likely an early prototype, that could still change for the final design.

Moto X Pure Edition (2014) now updating to Android 6.0 Marshmallow

As 2015 prepares to finish up and the next new year begin, owners of last year’s Moto X Pure Edition are inevitably wondering if Motorola will release Android 6.0 Marshmallow before January arrives. Whereas last year the company was quick to update the device for the release of Lollipop, things haven’t been going so smoothly this year. Thankfully, reports from users in various countries around the world indicate that the roll-out has begun formally, though some territories were early to the party.
The Android 6.0 update is around 884MB and can be manually checked for those who don’t want to wait for a notification to appear. To do so, hit the Settings menu, scroll to the bottom and find “About Phone” the select “System Updates” and see if the magic of Marshmallow is ready to go.
Please be aware that often times OEMs will issue “staged” roll-outs that see devices gradually having update access over the course of several days or even weeks in an attempt to minimize potential server traffic problems. If the prompt to download the new OS version is not appearing, prepare to wait a bit longer. Also be aware this update is for the 2014 (“2nd Gen”) Pure Edition -unlocked/SIM-free – variant and thus carriers will inevitably be on their own set schedule.

Android 6.0 brings with it Doze, a new feature that optimizes battery life by more aggressively managing the way in which apps behave when a device is in sleep mode and undisturbed. Now on Tap is another key addition: by holding down the “Home” button the OS will take a snapshot of the screen and analyze the content on it to allow direct access or usage of the information such as making an appointment. The last primary new feature is “App permissions” which give users more control over what any given app can do or have access to.
Android 6.0.1 has already been released earlier this month however, which brought with it new Emoji and bug fixes. It is unknown as to when or if Motorola plans to include it at a later date.

Unlocked Moto X (2014) receiving Marshmallow from Motorola
Owners of Motorola’s Moto X (2014) should be able to download Marshmallow right now, according to Motorola’s discussion forum.
Users began posting about the update Sunday and continued Monday in response to a question originally posted in October about when carrier-branded versions of the Moto X will receive the updates. Motorola’s website does not indicate any plans to bring the Marshmallow update to carrier-branded versions of the Moto X 2nd Generation in the United States.

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 drop test from 275 metres can’t shatter the screen
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
When Motorola and Verizon announced the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 and claimed that it had a shatterproof display, we were quietly suspicious – could a smartphone display really be shatterproof in all situations? Well, perhaps to settle the matter once and for all, the crew over at UnlockRiver have put together video of a most ambitious Droid Turbo 2 drop test – dropping the device from 275 metres, or 900 feet, in the air and seeing whether the screen shatters. Before you watch the video, let’s not forget that even the average phone will probably shatter at 5-10 metres, let along 275:
You might want to pick up your jaw off the ground. Yes, after that monstrous fall and bounce, the Droid Turbo 2 – bar some slight separation at the top left corner – is completely functional and, most importantly, the display has not shattered. Considering the average smartphone has a distinct possibility of shattering when dropped from waist height, this is an thoroughly amazing feat. Whatever devil’s magic this is, it is possibly the most impressive smartphone engineering feat we may experience for some time – bravo Motorola, bravo.
What do you think about this Motorola Droid Turbo 2 drop test? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
