Moto E LTE making its way to Cricket Wireless on March 13th for $130

MOto-e-2nd-gen

Cricket Wireless has just announced that it will carry the new Motorola Moto E LTE from Friday, March 13th for just $129.99. The device will come preloaded with Cricket’s Wi-Fi app, which the carrier hopes will keep data costs down by connecting to millions of free and open Wi-Fi hotspots across the nation. Additionally, for a limited time, customers switching to Cricket Wireless from T-Mobile, Sprint, Metro-PCS or Boost Mobile or switch to a $50 or $60 rate plan will be eligible for one free month of service after completing two months of service on Smart, Pro or Advanced plans.

The Moto E LTE is a decent step up from last year’s model, featuring a 4.5-inch LCD display and a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor backed by 1GB of RAM. It also has 8GB of on-board storage, MicroSD expansion up to 32GB, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The battery has also gotten a nice upgrade to 2390mAh, up from 1980mAh. The device also runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and features a number of great Motorola software enhancements, including Moto Display, Moto Assist and Moto Migrate.

For those looking to save a few bucks and pick up their first smartphone, the Moto E LTE seems like a great option so far. The 2015 model is a huge step up from last year’s, and the price point is extremely difficult to beat.

First gen Moto G now getting Android 5.0.2 in the UK

motog2013

Motorola UK has now started rolling out the Android 5.0.2 update for the first gen Moto G which was launched in 2013.

It is said that the update is currently seeding to XT1032 models of the handset, which is the first variant of the Moto G and only supports 3G networks. The company subsequently launched an LTE capable model along with a microSD card slot.

The update will bring a significant change for the customers coming from Android 4.4 KitKat. The first thing you will notice post the update is the presence of Material Design elements right throughout the UI.

There will be a handful of Motorola apps on board too, so it won’t be fully stock. Prominent among these apps is Motorola Gallery which provides a decent alternative for users who do not prefer the Photos app that is supplied by default on Android 5.0.

Release date and pricing leak for Verizon Nexus 6, will be available March 12th

Nexus_6_Cloud_White_And_Midnight_BlueWe know Verizon’s Nexus 6 is coming, and probably fairly soon, but some new promotional material has leaked that confirms some of the rumors we’ve already heard. The official launch date of the device will be March 12th if you’re willing to order it online, and the Nexus 6 will be offered in stores on March 19th.

As far as pricing goes, you’ll be able to snag a 32 GB variant for $249 on contract, $29.16 per month if you opt for Verizon’s Edge installment plans, or $699 if you plan on purchasing it outright. According to this info, though, it doesn’t seem like the white color will be available, and you won’t have any options besides 32 GB. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.

The Verizon Nexus 6 is definitely going to be launching on Android 5.1, so there’s a chance we’ll see the update make its way to other Nexus devices within the next two weeks, but worst case scenario, the official release to AOSP won’t trail far behind that March 12th launch. There’s also a 6 month Google Play Music promo bundled with the device, although that’s hardly a first for Google.

Still interested in buying a Nexus 6 on Verizon, or have you changed your mind to some of the other devices that have been announced?

How would you change Motorola’s Droid Ultra?

Sometimes, a musician tied down to a long contract will fire out a sub-par record to fulfill a contractual obligation to their label. In some ways, Motorola’s Droid Ultra felt like an exercise in contractual obligation rather than a handset in its own right. After all, the Ultra was, more or less, the Moto X in another body, and since the X was also available on Verizon, our Brad Molen felt that the Ultra had no reason to exist. We wager, however, that plenty of you bought this handset, so why not hop over to the forum and tell us why you did?

Market share numbers for January show almost no changes from last year

market shareComScore has reported their numbers for the US smartphone market share for November 2014 through January 2015. The numbers are almost identical to how things looked three months ago, with Apple claiming the top spot, Samsung close at #2, and LG, Motorola, and HTC pulling up the next three places.

In total market share, Apple still held the crown, but their numbers dipped by roughly half a percent. Samsung’s market share sat at 29.3%, which was exactly the same in October of 2014, and Motorola’s market didn’t grow or shrink either. LG showed some improvement, but HTC took a slight dip.

As far as operating systems go, Android is still the top dog with over half of the market, but that’s split up among several manufacturers. These numbers look a little different globally, but in the US, Apple still holds an edge over Android OEMs.
