Moto X gets new action, ‘chop twice for flashlight’, in Android 5.1 update

Moto_G_2014_2nd_Gen_Back_Slanted_Camera_Lens_Motorola_Logo_TA

Moto X just loves providing the simple but very useful stuff don’t they? And there is nothing wrong with that because we love it. The QuickCapture double twist gesture is just one example as you can start the Camera app with a simple double twist of your wrist.

Now Motorola is adding another action (in the Android 5.1 update) that will allow you to quickly open the flashlight by moving your phone twice in a chopping motion. Google had already added a quick way to open the flashlight through the Quick Settings, but this is just one extra way to do it. It should work even when the phone’s display is turned off, making this even quicker.

You will find the setting for “chop twice for flashlight” in the Moto app under Actions. Just make sure it’s enabled. Again, this is only for the Android 5.1 update, which for now, is only on the Pure Edition Moto X 2014. We expect this update to hit other carrier versions soon.

Motorola publishes Android 5.1 release notes for the Moto X (2014)

new_moto_x_back

Motorola has just announced that it’s now started internally testing an Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Moto X (2014). The upgrade will begin rolling out to unlocked variants over the course of the next few weeks, but carrier-branded devices will have to wait a little longer.

Hit the break below to see what Motorola has included in the Android 5.1 update (version 23.1.38).

  • Notifications & Interruptions
    • Block interruptions until your next alarm. This choice will show only when you have an alarm set within the next 12 hours. It will prevent you from missing an alarm when you choose ‘No interruptions’.
    • You can choose to enter a scheduled downtime early. For example, if you are going to bed early and change your notification settings, you can choose “Until your downtime ends”. This option will be visible when within 4 hours of the scheduled start of your downtime.
    • Adds icons to the volume settings panel that match those that will show in the status bar (None, Priority).
You can now alter notification volume controls while media is playing. With the volume controls showing, a tap on the bell icon will bring up notification volume controls.
  • Heads-up Notifications
    • In addition to dismissing a heads-up notification, you can now swipe it up to remove it from your screen. It will remain in your notifications tray and you can dismiss it later.
  • Quick Settings
    • You can quickly select different Wi-Fi access points or different paired Bluetooth devices with a new pull-down menu on each tile. Conditional settings tiles that only show if you use the feature – like “Invert Colors” or “Hotspot” – can now be hidden via a long-press on the tile.
  • Camera
    • Reduces noise in low-light shots and improves responsiveness of the viewfinder with the front-facing camera (selfie).
  • Device Protection
    • Lost or stolen devices will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account, even if reset to factory settings. Note that you must have a Google account on the device to automatically enable this feature and set a PIN, password or pattern screen lock.
  • Performance
    • Improvements in the Android Runtime (ART) lead to faster application launch times..
  • Lockscreen
    • If you have enabled Ambient Display, the minimum swipe distance has increased to reduce accidental interactions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Clock in the status bar isn’t updating and alarms are not going off
    • Can’t delete SMS messages when the SIM card is full
    • No ringer audio while making an outgoing call
    • Calculator floating point calculations
    • Chrome crashes on launch
    • Frequent restarts while watching Netflix
    • Wi-Fi will not automatically reconnect to your home Wi-Fi
    • Wi-Fi not connecting after being idle all night
    • Wi-Fi connection issues with multiple routers in one location
    • Bluetooth discovery is not triggered when you refresh settings
    • CPU wakelocks that contribute to heavier battery drain
    • Connection and synchronization issues with MS Exchange servers
    • Incorrect default APN
    • Can’t unlock the SIM with a PIN/PUK code
    • Can’t play ‘pinned’ content
    • General stability improvements

Droid Turbo to jump straight to Android 5.1 according to Motorola Software Engineer

verizon_motorola_droid_turbo_blue_ballistic_nylon

If you own a Motorola Droid Turbo on Verizon, you’ve probably been waiting patiently (or not) for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to hit your device. Verizon doesn’t have the best record when it comes to Android updates, but we have some news (good and possibly bad) after the break.

First the good news. According to comments made on a (now deleted) Google Plus conversation by the Motorola software engineer, Luciano Carvalho, the Droid Turbo should be updated straight to Android 5.1.  It would seem that Verizon has decided against wasting resources updating the Droid Turbo to an already obsolete version of Android. Another reason for skipping the earlier versions of Lollipop is that Android 5.1 has Voice Over LTE (VOLTE) support baked in.

Verizon demands VoLTE support and 5.1 brings it to the platform. Basically it… Porting all the VoLTE changes to 5.0 and then switch to the AOSP solution on 5.1 would be a huge waste of resources.

Now we get to the possible bad news. The decision to skip straight over to Android 5.1 could mean that the update will take longer to be pushed out to the Droid Turbo. Why? Well, Lollipop 5.0 was released last year, but the Droid Turbo is still making do with KitKat 4.4 some 5 months later. So it’s probably best to expect the Android 5.1 update in the coming months rather than weeks. Still, at least the Droid Turbo is getting a Lollipop update, it just might be a little later than hoped for.

Buy the Moto X Pure Edition, get a free Moto E

Moto X and E

Want to buy a smartphone for yourself, but also need to snag a cheap phone for family (or, let’s be honest, a backup for yourself)? Motorola might have you covered. It just kicked off an unusual promotion that gives you a free 3G version of the new Moto E when you buy a Moto X Pure Edition. That’s not so hot if you insist on LTE data for every device, but it’s a no-brainer if you were either set on getting a Moto X or don’t relish the idea of splurging on two phones at once. Don’t spend long deciding what to do, though — Motorola is only running the promo through March 24th.

Lollipop testing on Moto X 2013 Developer’s Edition commences

Moto_X_Back_Camera_Lens_Motorola_Logo_TA

Some owners of the first generation Motorola Moto X smartphone are reporting they have received emails alerting them to a forthcoming soak test for their devices. The update that will be rolling out to those who choose to participate is expected to be an update to Android Lollipop.

This is welcome news to owners of the device since Lollipop has been delayed due to issues with the processor used in the Moto X 2013. The soak test is a good sign that Motorola is very close to rolling out an official update. However, owners of the device that purchased them through specific carriers will have to wait a while longer for carrier certification to be completed.
