Motorola CMO hints at a much better camera experience for the next Moto X

Moto_X_2014_2nd_Gen_Slanted_Back_Motorola_Logo_Camera_Lens_01_TA

Motorola makes great phones, but one area they have never delivered in is the camera. The quality of images are always well below average and I just can’t user their devices because of it.

Now Motorola CMO, Adrienne Hayes has acknowledged this issue and is hinting at a major improvement via Twitter.

When asked if the camera component will be the main focal point on future Motorola devices, she replied…“YES. We know we need to improve here and are definitely going to “bring it.” Another tweet reveals their intention to bring advanced manual controls as well.

This is great news, but I will believe it when I see it. Motorola has touted their cameras before, especially with the first generation Moto X, but it ended up being a complete letdown. If Motorola can deliver an acceptable camera experience, I might just go back to them with my next phone.

[Deal] Motorola knocks the Nexus 6 to $499 through June 23

motorola_nexus_6_discount_june_2015

Now through the early afternoon on June 23, Motorola will sell you the Nexus 6 at a very good price. Motorola, who manufactures the Nexus 6 for Google, has knocked the price of the handset down to $499 for the 32GB model. The 64GB model has also been discounted to $549. This means that buyers of the Nexus 6 from Motorola’s site will save $150.

Does $499/$549 still feel like too much money? Then take advantage of Motorola’s financing option and pay around $28 per month for eighteen months.

The sale ends at 11:59AM ET on June 23.

Motorola says camera quality is one of its top priorities

new-moto-x-first-look-aa-9-of-211

Motorola has produced some incredible pieces of hardware in the past few years, from high-end options like the Moto X (2nd Gen.) to low-end options like the Moto G (2nd Gen.) or the Moto E (2015). However, it’s pretty well known among the tech community that the cameras in Motorola’s recent smartphones have not been very capable at all. But according to Motorola CMO Adrienne Hayes, that’s going to change from here on out.

When asked about camera performance in upcoming Motorola smartphones, Hayes commented that the company is going to “bring it” when talking about future Moto devices. Not only that, but another curious consumer asked if Motorola plans to bring advanced manual camera controls in future devices. Hayes responded by saying, “We absolutely can and we absolutely will this year. Stay tuned!”

Seeing as how the last two flagship Motorola devices weren’t the best in this area, we may have to wait until launch to find out for ourselves. It certainly sounds like there’s a reason to stay hopeful for the company, but until then, other flagship devices like the Galaxy S6 and LG G4 will top our list as the best smartphone cameras available on the market today.

If Motorola truly improved the camera on the upcoming Moto X (3rd Gen.), would that be a contender for your next smartphone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

2nd-gen Moto 360 rumors

As the release for the hugely anticipated successor to the Moto 360 smartwatch nears, more and more buzz is naturally surfacing.  And why shouldn’t it be?  The original 360 blew up with a large fan-base right from the bat.  It set the standard of how a quality smartwatch should be built, look, and feel.  Motorola did it right.

But like typical with first-gen devices, it wasn’t perfect.  The 360 was criticized for its lackluster internals, such as the old TI OMAP 3 SoC running it, probably chosen to cut down on costs. Unfortuntely, it seems like that decision has come back to bite Motorola, because they’ve had to delay the Android Wear 5.1.1 update due to performance issues.

The good news is that Motorola is set to make the needed updates to the 2nd-gen Moto 360 and have us jumping for joy once again.  This is what we know so far:

Improved display

The display on the original 360 received a couple knocks, due to the “flat tire” unusable area on the bottom of the screen (where the ambient light sensor resides) and the low resolution of 320 x 290 (only 205 ppi).

We’ve heard word that the next 360 will boast a 360 x 360 resolution.  To compare, the LG Watch Urbane has a 320 x 320 (245 ppi) display, so the increase coming to the 360 should be welcomed.

Rumors have also said that Motorola has figured out how to fill up that flat tire with their design and utilize the entire 360 degrees for screen.  And with the looming LG round smartwatches that already do this, it would be a smart move.

Smaller size, more customization

One of the first leaks we saw about the new Moto 360 came from the Lenovo CEO, Yang Yuanqing, funny enough.  He showed off a revealing pic centered around the magnitude of customization the 2nd-gen 360 will have:

360_ceo_leak

What we saw here was two different sizes and various colors for metal and leather straps and frames.  Seems like Moto Maker is going to go full-fledged with this one.

It is also known that Motorola’s SVP of Global Marketing and Communication stated that the next 360 will be smaller than the first version.  Although it hasn’t been clarified if that meant a smaller variant or thinner device.

Our most recent visual leak was a bit of a curve ball, because the design portrayed differs from what Yang Yuanqing displayed for us.

Moto-360-2015-leak-792x446

Here we don’t see the straps lugs sticking out of the frame.  This image hints at a sleek and thin watch with easily swappable bands.  I’m left hoping that the devices in Yang Yuanqing’s teaser were only early prototypes.

Release date

It was unfortunate that we didn’t get to see the new Moto 360 at Google I/O this year.  If you recall, it was unveiled in the event last year.  But we do have a couple tidbits suggesting that a launch is imminent.

In a talk with the Telegraph, Yang Yuanqing said “…you may see in summer us launching some very exciting products, including phones and watches.”  Also, the Bluetooth SIG for a “Motorola Android Device” was recently spotted, with a model number of BTMW03 (the original 360 had a model number of BTMW01).

Furthermore, price drops (like the Moto 360 $100 reduction) typically infer that a refresh is nearby.

Are you anxiously waiting as I am for the next Moto 360 to drop, or are you satisfied enough with the original?

Rumor: Moto X (2015) will feature a fingerprint scanner

moto-x-2015-fingerprint-scanner

The latest rumors surrounding Motorola’s highly anticipated Moto X refresh for 2015 is that the upcoming flagship will opt for a fingerprint scanner, as we’re beginning to see in many flagship devices.

Photos were posted online of the alleged Moto X’s chassis. Pictured above, you can see that all of the internals have been gutted out, except for a small square cutout, which seems to be the housing for a fingerprint scanner.

moto-x-2015-fingerprint-scanner-2

As far as the design of the upcoming Moto X refresh goes, there’s not much to go off here, besides the form factor we’ve come to know and love over the past two versions of the device.

Past rumors have suggested that the Moto X (2015) will feature a Snapdragon 808 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and a 16-megapixel rear camera.

We’ll have to wait for some official confirmation, as we get closer to Motorola’s release for its next flagship device.

Fingerprint scanner hinted in latest Moto X 2015 pics

Moto-XMotorola’s next-gen Moto X has been catching our eye for quite some time now with all the leaks and rumors that have been showing up recently. We had a report about Moto X 2015 being imported to India few days back and also a recent spec leak hinting at a QHD display.

The Motorola Moto X 2015 is one of the most anticipated devices of this year. As with the success of its predecessor, the Moto X 2014, we expect Motorola’s Moto X 2015 to make quite the buzz. With improved features and an upgraded OS, it’s bound to be a hit.

Today we have some fresh pics of the chassis of Moto X 2015. While it doesn’t show much or reveal the components of any sort other than what we already know, it does show one interesting thing.

moto-x-2015-01
moto-x-2015-02

If you look carefully you may see a square cut-out beneath the camera. It could mean one of two things – i’s either a fingerprint scanner or space for the Motorola ‘M dimple’ as we call it.

We would love to see a fingerprint scanner there, seeing as its now a trend with the latest smartphones to have one. Although, we could be entirely wrong and nothing as been confirmed.

Would you like to have a fingerprint scanner in the Moto X 2015? Let us know in the comments.

Moto X (2015) will likely incorporate fingerprint scanner

motorola logo mwc 2015 2

Last year, source code turned up suggesting that Motorola and Google had originally planned to incorporate a fingerprint scanner into the Nexus 6, though the sensor was ultimately scrapped by the time the final hardware arrived. More recently, it was announced Android M will support fingerprint readers out of the box, making it clear that Google still has fingerprint reading on its radar. But what about Motorola? If a new leak proves accurate, Motorola’s next-gen Moto X will also offer a fingerprint reader.

The two photos below give us a peak at what is allegedly the Moto X’s chassis. While we have no way of confirming if this is the real deal or not, but whatever this device is, its back shows off a cut-out that certainly looks about the right size and shape for a fingerprint scanner.

moto-x-2015-chassis

This means, if the leak is correct, Motorola will be taking a rear-mounted approach to fingerprint scanning. Considering Motorola has long ditched physical or capacitive keys on all but its Droid series, we aren’t surprised that they are taking a different route than Apple or Samsung. For what it’s worth, the center-rear position is actually very comfortable and natural to reach for, as evidenced by devices like the Huawei Mate 7.

While it is too early to say for sure if this is a fingerprint scanner, or even a real Moto X (2015), we can’t say we’d be too surprised. Of course, unless the Moto X 2015 ships with Android M out of the box (quite unlikely), Motorola will probably come with a modified version of Android Lollipop with its own in-house fingerprint scanner drivers and software, though we imagine it will play nicely with Android Pay and other Android M fingerprint reader features when they do arrive.

Moto G 2015 Release Date Next Month, Hints Lenovo CEO

Yibada reports that Lenovo’s chairman and CEO, Yang Yuanqing, tells that the company is preparing for the release of products this summer.

In a statement to The Telegraph, Yuanqing explained, “We have many new models in development with the Moto brands. So you may see us launching some very exciting products, including phones and watches.”

It is expected that one of these phones will be the Moto G 2015. After all, the first ever Moto G was released in November 2013, and the second generation variant came out 10 months later in September 2014. If this is a planned 10-month release cycle, then the Moto G 2015 should be revealed in July.

Of course, this is just speculation that has not been confirmed by the company. At least we’ll know what these products will be next month.

Android 5.1 for the Motorola DROID Turbo is coming June 10th

Back in March we heard of Motorola‘s plans to jump the the Motorola DROID Turbo from Android KitKat straight to Android 5.1, eliminating Android 5.0 from the equation entirely. While in the long term DROID Turbo owners should probably be thanking Motorola for its foresight, it’s still a hard wait considering so many other devices are rocking Android Lollipop already. Still, the wait is almost over with reports saying that Android 5.1 for the Motorola DROID Turbo is going to be dropped on June 10th.

The DROID Turbo is certainly Motorola’s most impressive device from a hardware perspective, at least, ignoring to the Motorola-manufactured Nexus 6, but it’s interesting that they didn’t give it the same treatment that it gave its other major devices, the Moto X and Moto G. All the same, the update is apparently coming, so come June 10th, start mashing your System Updates button – and feel free to drop us a line in the comments if (or when) you get your update.

A supposed leaked spec sheet of the Moto X (2015)

In a later update, GSMArena received a second image of a device with the same model number, which makes the rumor a bit more credible. According to this photo, the Moto X (2015) will run Android 5.1.1. It will also have a 16MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. All of this will be powered by a 3,280 mAh battery.

Currently, there is no word on the smartphone’s release date, as of yet.
