You can now test Lollipop on the Motorola DROID Turbo… on the web

motorola Droid turbo verizon

The Motorola DROID Turbo is an awesome smartphone, but one dreaded problem always lurks around Verizon-exclusive devices like this one. It takes forever for Big Red to update them! Usually even longer than with all other smartphones. Every device and their mothers is already on Lollipop, yet the DROID Turbo is staying far behind in the race.

Many months after the Lollipop release, the Motorola DROID Turbo is expected to finally get its Android 5.1 update (yes, it skipped previous iterations of Lollipop) by mid-June. So… very soon, and it seems Verizon and Motorola may be just in time to fulfill this promise. At least if the latest update to the official online Motorola DROID Turbo demo serves as any corroboration.

droid-turbo-simulator

This tool is at Verizon’s website and allows potential customers to get a general gist of how the Motorola DROID Turbo works (as well as other devices). It’s actually quite helpful for anyone looking to get a new device they may not be familiar with. You can experience all sorts of aspects of the UI without even stepping out of your desk. From phone calls and advanced calling to messaging, cloud services and even SIM card information.

What really tickled our fancy is lower in the web page, though. Scroll past the simulator and you will see a bold setnence that reads: “Last Modified: 06/11/2015 to Android 5.1″. So all the software you see here will come from the Lollipop-based OS. Give it a quick test if you are feeling curious. And keep in mind this may be proof that the update is just around the corner. Hopefully you get it sooner than later. Just try not to destroy your thumb by smashing on that update button all weekend!

The Android 5.1 update for the Droid Turbo is still in its testing phase

DROID_Turbo_Back_DROID_Logo_TA

David Schuster, Senior Director of Software Product Management at Motorola Mobility, has taken to his Google+ page to share a statement on the progress of the long-awaited Android 5.1 update for the Droid Turbo.

Sadly, it’s not good news. The update still isn’t ready for the device and is bang smack in the middle of its testing phase. Things are looking “good”, though, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before the upgrade starts rolling out.

Heres what Mr Schuster had to say:

Hey, I wanted to give a quick update on our progress on the DROID Turbo 5.1 lollipop upgrade since there seems to be A LOT of inaccurate information out there. We are still in the lab test cycle and things are looking good. We have not provided a launch date yet, but I will let you know as soon as the update is available.

So there you have it, folks. The update isn’t quite ready yet, but it should be soon!

Motorola starts 5.1 soak test for the 2013 Moto X in the US

David Shuster dropped some good news to those people still hanging on the the aging Moto X (2013) today on Google Plus. He also probably shared the news on other social media sites too, but I don’t frequent other sites.

According to our friend Shuster, the soak test for 5.1 are starting in the United States, Brazil, and Canada. He expects for full release of 5.1 for the first generation Moto X to start in a few weeks.

It is worth nothing that Schuster notes that Motorola Update Services need to be at version 4 or higher in order to get the 5.1 updates, so make sure to hit the Play Store and make sure your Motorola apps are all up to date!

Hopefully the soak test goes alright and we can bask in 5.1’s glory sooner rather than later!

It might have taken a while, but it should be well worth the wait. Hold on tight, 5.1 is coming soon!

Verizon’s Moto E (2nd Gen.) now receiving update to Android 5.1 Lollipop

Mote-E-LTE-4

If you’re the owner of a Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen.) on the Verizon network, you should be in for a sweet treat sometime soon. Big Red has just begun pushing out an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, carrying build number 23.11.17. This new version of Android brings some user interface improvements including a tweaked quick settings menu and new interruption controls that will help prevent missed alarms. The update also brings notification volume control access and factory reset protection to help stop hackers from stealing your information. It should be noted that the Verizon document doesn’t specify how big the update is, so you’ll probably want to be connected to a Wi-Fi network before downloading.

The update is rolling out now, but as is the case with most other updates from Verizon, it may take a few days to make its way to your device. To check for the update manually, head to Settings>About phone>System updates>Check for update. Have you received the update yet? If so, let us know how you like it!

Where’s the Lollipop update for the DROID Turbo?

It looks like someone over at Verizon has made a little bit of a boo boo. When looking at the phone specs for the DROID Turbo, it’s stated that device is running Lollipop. However, the funny thing is, that the Turbo does NOT currently run Lollipop.

This may have just been an honest mistake, or someone at Verizon is putting the cart before the horse. Original rumors were that the DROID Turbo would have been updated to Android Lollipop 5.0.2, this week, however that has yet to happen.

Then Motorola came out and stated that the Turbo would be directly updated to Android 5.1 due to the native VolTE support. However documents from Motorola state that the Turbo WILL be updated to 5.0.2 and won’t skip to my lou all the way to 5.1.

DROID Turbo software

Irregardless of either of these points, the fact of the matter remains that DROID Turbo users are still without Lollipop and are getting frustrated. What does matter is that the combination of Motorola and Verizon need to get on the same page, get the update ready for release, and start sending out the update to Turbo users.

It’s not really known why these “flagship” devices are still waiting for the Android Lollipop update, even though Lollipop has been available for over a year. On top of the fact that the manufacturer of the device, Motorola, used to be owned by the company that created the software, Google. Time will tell if these manufacturers and carriers can get their crap together, but hopefully it will be smooth(er) sailing for when the release of Android M is upon us.

Sooooo, stop taking forever, proving the point of fragmentation, and release the update already.

Apple makes Android Migration possible with iOS 9

Of the many new features announced at Apple’s WorldWide Developer Conference on Monday, a few stuck out just a bit for those not intertwined with the Apple world. The introduction of Apple Music and Android Migration. While most will grunt or groan about this feature, Android Migration can, and hopefully will help, many people who decide to switch from Android to iOS.

There are already tools available from the likes of Samsung, Motorola and HTC, that help you move data from one device to another, but it’s not really intended to be used across platforms. That’s what is most exciting to me. In no way am I suggesting that anyone ditch their awesome Android devices for an iPhone, but if you do decide to, you will be able to easily transfer most of your information.

Now a big hiccup that is seen when switching between platforms, is remembering which apps you downloaded on your previous phone, before switching to the new device. You can either do something like I do, and write out a list, or just wing it. However Apple is hoping to make things a bit easier when it comes to downloading those apps you were using on your Android device.

It securely transfers your contacts, message history, camera photos and videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts, calendars, wallpaper, and DRM-free songs and books. And it will help you rebuilt your app library too.

Free apps will be automatically suggested through the App Store and Apple’s new suggestions page. Now the trickier one. Those paid apps. Paid apps will obviously not be able to be transferred between iOS and Android, or vice-versa, however when using the Android Migration tool, any of your paid apps that are available on both platforms will be added to your Wish List within the App Store. Of course this doesn’t solve all of your headaches, but at least all of your paid apps will be able to be easily located and purchased.

It isn’t yet known how Android Migration will exactly work between both platforms, but we can assume that Apple is working on an application that will be released on the Google Play Store. You can expect to see Apple’s Android Migration application released this fall with the release of iOS 9 and possibly alongside the release of Apple Music to Android users.

Man, this is getting weird.

Motorola acknowledges they need to improve Moto X camera

It is pretty well known that the camera has never been a strong suit of the Moto X.  The significant 13 MP camera upgrade on the 2014 Moto X promoted lots of promise, but in practice it simply could not keep with the competition.  It was haunted by hit or miss image quality, frustrating autofocus, and low-light struggles.  And that cool-looking dual LED ring diffuser flash did not end up adding any value.

Turns out that we’re not being unfair with this negative speak either.  On Twitter recently, Motorola’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Adrienne Hayes, responded to a question about the focus on the camera for future devices.  Her response was “We know we need to improve here and are definitely going to ‘bring it.””

She was also asked if Motorola is planning to bring advanced manual camera controls in the future.  Hayes replied with “We absolutely can and we absolutely will this year.  Stay tuned!”

I’m glad to hear the priority and confidence going into the next Moto X camera.   The 2014 Moto X was one of the best offerings last year, with great specs, a $500 price tag, and unique customization with Moto Maker.  Sounds like Motorola is gunning for that top spot in 2015.

Are you likely to move over to a Moto X if it has a fantastic camera?

Are you a 1st gen Moto X owner and feeling a bit left out in the cold? Well, your feeling of abandonment is about to come to an end after Motorola‘s David Schuster has confirmed that soak tests for the Android Lollipop update for 1st gen Moto X has started in various places this week. Schuster mentions that soak tests in France and Germany have already commenced this week and tests in the US and Brazil will start in a matter of days. The post goes on to say that the update itself will start rolling out a few after the soak tests are complete – assuming everything goes to plan.

Of course, if you have a carrier variant of the Moto X 2013, you’ll want to keep your excitement in check, because as always you’ll be at the mercy of your carrier. Still, it’s exciting to know that the update is inbound and that 1st gen Moto X’s could soon be rocking Google’s latest and greatest.

Android 5.1 Lollipop may soon roll out to the Moto X (1st Gen.)

Moto X

If you’re the owner of a 2013 Moto X in the U.S., your device may get a pretty nice software update sometime soon. According to a post on Google+ made by Motorola employee David Schuster, as long as everything goes well with the current soak tests, the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop will begin rolling out to Moto X (1st Gen.) devices sometime next week.

Schuster explains:

We have addressed an issue we found in a previous soak test and should start full soak testing in the US and Brazil for retail later this week. If all goes well, full deployment can happen the following week.

Certainly, carrier variants of these devices may take a bit longer to receive the update, though Schuster remains confident that the update won’t see any issues. He says that Motorola is in a number of carrier labs as we speak, so if there are any issues in the current builds, they’ll likely get ironed out before next week. Additionally, full soak tests are now rolled out in both France and Germany, so folks in those regions will likely see an update to their devices sometime soon, as well.

Do you own a 2013 Moto X? Are you still enjoying it?

Motorola Moto X (2013) may see “full deployment” of Lollipop next week

Moto_X_Red_TA-630x341

David Schuster, one of the many Motorola employees that likes to be transparent with consumers, took to Google+ to provide some information regarding the Moto X (2013) and Lollipop.

Soak testing between the company’s former flagship device and the latest version of Android has begun in France and Germany. Haven’t noticed the soak test in those markets? Motorola intends to push the software update next week if everything runs smoothly.

Full soak testing in the United States and Brazil will begin later this week and Schuster says that “if all goes well, full deployment can happen the following week.” The Lollipo update is said to be in carrier labs as we speak and that could indicate a widespread release is imminent.
