AT&T and US Cellular start rolling out the Android 5.1 update for the Moto X (2014)
Both AT&T and US Cellular have finally started rolling out the much-anticipated Lollipop update to all their carrier-branded variants of the Moto X (2014) located in the United States. In terms of added functionality, this upgrade brings the latest version of the Android operating system (5.1) to the handset, together with a bunch of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.
All the changes you’d expect to find in Lollipop are bundled into this upgrade, including support for multiple accounts, improved notifications, a smoother multitasking experience and the recently-announced Material Design guidelines.
As is customary with all manufacturer updates, the upgrade is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your device, you can search for the update manually. To do so simply follow the four steps below:
- Open the Settings app
- Scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”
- Hit “System Updates”
- Tap on “Check for update”

AT&T Moto X (2nd gen) now getting Android 5.1 Lollipop

The unlocked and Verizon versions of the 2nd-generation Moto X have already started receiving their Android 5.1 updates. It’s only a matter of time before all other Moto X users get the sweet Lollipop treat. If you are using a Moto X on AT&T, today is your lucky day!
After announcing the AT&T Moto X (2nd gen) was getting Android 5.1 full soak test, this morning, Motorola’s David Schuster has just updated its original post giving us the good news. It seems the Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA update for the Moto X (2014) is ready and “open for pull”.

This should mean the update is now final and you can go ahead and grab it. You can check for updates within your settings, but remember these don’t always come right away. They are usually rolled out periodically, so you might not see it available at this point.
“UPDATE: Moto X (2nd Gen) on AT&T is open for pull for the 5.1 Lollipop upgrade” -David Schuster

Motorola starts Android 5.1 update for a grouping of devices
In 2013, Motorola showed customers they were serious about system updates when the company updated its Moto X flagship to KitKat faster than some Nexus devices. However, Motorola has been slower in getting the latest version of Lollipop to its devices this year. Thankfully, Motorola’s David Schuster took to Google Plus today to update users about current Android 5.1 update statuses for several Motorola phones.
For the Motorola Moto X (2014), US Cellular users are seeing full deployment. Users on AT&T will be happy to know that a full soak test has just begun. Assuming all goes well, that means an OTA is just around the corner. There is an ongoing soak test for Verizon users that is being expanded. Motorola is also allowing an open pull for Verizon and AT&T users meaning they can manually pull the update from the Settings menu on their phones.
For the Motorola Moto G with LTE (1st generation), Motorola has started a full soak in Brazil Retail. And for the Motorola Moto E with LTE (2nd generation), Cricket Wireless users are getting a full Android 5.1 deployment starting today.
That is all the news we have so far, but it seems to be a pretty big day for Motorola updates. Hopefully, the ongoing soak tests will be promptly followed by full OTAs.

Deal: Buy a Moto X (2nd Gen.) through July 7th and get a red leather back for free

From now until Tuesday, July 7th at 10:59am CT, Motorola will allow you to upgrade to a genuine red Horween leather back for free with your purchase of an off-contract Moto X. Verizon to begin pushing out Android 5.1 update to the Droid Turbo on July 1st

If you’re the proud owner of a Motorola Droid Turbo, your wait is finally almost over. Verizon has just announced that it will begin pushing out the Droid Turbo’s Android 5.1 Lollipop update beginning in the afternoon of Wednesday, July 1st. The update, which Verizon says will bring the device’s software version to 23.11.38, will roll out to devices in stages.
So, what does Android 5.1 bring to the table? Aside from a few new Moto Actions on the Motorola side of things, Android 5.1 will bring performance improvements, a ton of user interface enhancements, factory reset protection and much more. Remember, you’re moving up to Android 5.1 from Android 4.4 KitKat (not 5.0 Lollipop), so this is a pretty huge update. To get the full list of changes, feel free to check out Motorola’s full changelog, as well as a complete Android 5.1 walkthrough from our very own Joe Hindy.

Fans of mid-range devices are likely eagerly awaiting the announcement of Motorola‘s next generation Moto G smartphone – the previous two Moto G’s have been wonderfully balanced, all-round devices for a positively average price, and the Moto G 2015 is expected to be more of the same. We’ve heard precious little about the device, however we’ve gotten our best look at the device so far today with a number of press renders leaked by TechnoBuffalo.
The look of the Moto G 2015 in these renders matches exactly the leak we had a few weeks ago, sporting a brand new back cover with a strip of plastic running down from the camera and marked with the Motorola logo – we’re assuming it’s purely ornamental. The front of the device also shows the return of the dual front speakers and what should be Android 5.1 whenever this device launches. Hardware-wise, we’re expecting a 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 410, 1GB RAM and a 13MP camera, which doesn’t change much on paper from last year’s version, but will nevertheless make it a tantalizing mid-range option.
What do you think about the look of the Moto G 2015? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Motorola says the DROID Turbo Lollipop update is coming soon
With the original Moto X, Motorola showed customers that it could be just as fast as Google at releasing system updates to its flagships. However, their beastly DROID Turbo has been almost a completely different story.
With a near-stock Android skin, many believed the Turbo would receive the same quick updates that were seen with the Moto X, but with Android M just around the corner, the Turbo is still missing the taste of Lollipop.
Thankfully, that should all soon change. Motorola took to Twitter and announced that Android 5.1 is ready and will be “coming to a DROID Turbo near you.” The Turbo has recently started a soak test, but this tweet means that the full OTA update is just around the corner, hopefully.
As with some of their other phones, Motorola has decided to skip Android 5.0 and update directly to 5.1.While this will come to excitement of Turbo owners, it begins to raise another question. Will Android M take just as long to arrive on their device?
Currently, there is no way to tell. The DROID Turbo is a Verizon exclusive, and they are not known for their timely updates, plus the Turbo will be last year’s product by then. Hopefully, Turbo owners will not have to endure such a long break between updates next time, but if the present is anything to go on, they should not start to get their hopes up.
If you own a DROID Turbo, are you excited about Motorola’s announcement? Let us know in the comments!

Verizon’s 2nd Gen Moto X Android 5.1 update makes its way to their support page, OTA incoming

Just about a month ago Motorola started rolling out Android 5.1 for the Moto X 2nd Gen device. The unlocked ones at least. Now we can toss Verizon branded devices in the mix as official recipients. Verizon has updated the software update page for the device to outline Android 5.1. Verizon outlines the update as adding in new interruption controls, notification volume control access, drop down controls for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi from notification panel and an increase to the minimum swipe distance to activate the ambient display.
It will also include Factory Data Reset Protection. That is the new security implementation that protects your device from a factory data reset by requiring your Google Account credentials to be logged in order to use it after the wipe. I don’t see the Chop Gesture listed in the PDF, nor do I see VoLTE or HD Voice though.
Some users may already have the update installed, while others will be waiting impatiently. Like most OTA updates, it could take a few weeks to hit every active device in the wild. If you do see it appear, make sure you have a solid Wi-Fi connection, well over 50% life and some time to kill for it to download and install.

Motorola preparing Android 5.1 Lollipop for the DROID Turbo
Tonight, Motorola announced that Android 5.1 Lollipop is “coming to a #DroidTurbo near you.” The company issued a tweet on Monday evening that thanked everyone for their patience, likely meaning that a software update with Lollipop is imminent for the Verizon-exclusive device.
Since its launch in October 2013, the DROID turbo has remained stuck on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. People have been waiting more than six months just to see a current version of Android reach the DROID Turbo. We all know that Verizon takes its sweet time with software updates but this long of a wait seems really unfair for consumers.
A soak test for the software update with the DROID Turbo has already begun as select owners are reporting its arrival.

The exact hardware is not confirmed, but the rumour is it will ship with a Snapdragon 410 chip, 1GB of RAM and a 5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel display, a 13-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8GB of storage and LTE support.
