Hands on with the Motorola Moto Pulse

motorola_moto_pulse_slight_angle_TA

This week, Motorola silently launched two new wireless audio products that are available right now. The company’s new wireless on-ear headphones is called Moto Pulse, coming with a built-in microphone that allows for hands-free calling. It uses a Bluetooth connection and that means you can use the Moto Pulse with phones, tablets, and computers. Both Android and iOS devices are supported here. The extent of Motorola’s attention to software doesn’t end there, though. The Motorola Connect app will ensure that you always know the status of the Moto Pulse, specifically its battery life and location.

While compact in size, the Moto Pulse has 40mm speaker drivers to pump out rich sound. Comfort, too, was made possible with the Moto Pulse and that’s seen in the pressure-free headband and cushioned ear cups.

The Moto Pulse is priced at $59 and comes in black and white color options.

Motorola reels off some interesting, and disturbing, facts about our relationship with our phones

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

You might remember that when Motorola announced it would be holding an event on July 28th, their open invite included the caption “your relationship status is about to change”. We now know (and we suspected anyway) that Motorola was referring to our relationship with our phones – as an interesting and related aside, Motorola has gathered some facts about relationships we have with our phones and presented them in infographic form.

The infographic includes tidbits like:

  • 60% in the entire world sleep while holding their phones (74% in India and 70% in China)
  • 17% of people use their phones in the shower (27% in Brazil)
  • Only 39% of people refer to their relationship with their phone as happy (19% in China)
  • 22% of people would give up sex for a weekend rather than their smartphone

Some of these you can see happening, while others just seems a little bizarre. For the full list of facts, you can see the infographic through the link here.

What do you think about these relationship facts about people and their phones? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Motorola Moto X Style versus Samsung Galaxy S6

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_about_phone_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style is truly an innovative flagship device for the company, and will possibly be one of the more respected handsets among the flagships that have and will release this year. Many were concerned what the Lenovo acquisition would mean for Motorola’s devices, but it seems to have been a smooth transition with Lenovo not wanting to interfere with Motorola’s big push for the pure Android experience.

The Moto X Style offers the pure Android experience with few modifications, and the device stacks up very well against the OnePlus Two, but just how well does it compete with what is arguable one of the biggest flagships of the year, Samsung’s Galaxy S6?

Design

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_rear_panel_closeup_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style comes in at 153.9 x 76.2 x 11.1 mm and weighs 175 grams. As per the norm, you’ll find volume buttons and power buttons on the sides of the device. It also features a metal frame with a silicone removable back panel, touting Motorola’s signature curved design.

The SIM card slot is placed inside the removable rear panel. Around the front, you have the front-facing camera, LED flash, and a variety of sensors. On the back, you have Motorola’s signature rear camera with flash along a vertical stripe housing the Motorola logo.

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Front_Bottom_Home_Button_TA

The Samsung Galaxy S6 measures in at 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm and weighs 138 grams. The volume rocker, power button, and SIM card slot are on the two sides of the device, and unlike the Moto X Style, the back is not removable, as it features a metal and glass unibody.

On the front, you have the home button at the bottom, with capacitive recent apps and back buttons to the left and right, respectively. The front-facing camera resides at the top, alongside a variety of sensors. Around the back, there is a rear-facing camera with flash to the right above it. A Samsung logo is placed below the camera utilities.

Verdict: It’s a matter of preference.

Hardware

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_TA

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 has an Exynos 7420 chipset, featuring a quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 and quad-core 2.1GHz Cortex-A57 processor. It’s packed with Mali-T760MP8 GPU and a hefty 3GB of RAM. Samsung opted to get rid of a 16GB model, instead offering 32/64/128GB storage options with no microSD card support.

The Galaxy S6 features a gorgeous 16-megapixel rear camera, has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and the usual variety of sensors: an accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer, and etc. Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S6 employs the microUSB port over recent USB Type-C options we’ve seen.

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_camera_app_TA

The Moto X Style sports a premium package, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset and a 1.8GHz dual-core Cortex-A57 and quad-core 1.44GHz Cortex-A53 processor. It has an Adreno 418 GPU, 16/32/64GB storage options, 3GB of RAM, and microSD card support.

It has a 21-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Motorola shied away from the USB Type-C port, opting for the traditional microUSB solution. It also has the standard package of sensors: accelerometer, barometer, and etc.

Verdict: Both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Moto X Style offer a lot of power, but as far as numbers go, the Galaxy S6 wins.

Display

motorola_moto_x_style_screen-to-body_comparison_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style has a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 TFT LCD display, with a pixel density of 520ppi. It also sports Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection and has a 74.9% screen-to-body ratio.

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Main_TA

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED display, sporting a whopping 571ppi. It has Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 protection with a 70.7% screen-to-body ratio. As is the norm with Samsung’s AMOLED display, colors are saturated, yet vivid and vibrant.

Verdict: It’s a tie.

Battery

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_Lower_S6_Logo_02_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style features a 3,000mAh battery with TurboCharge technology, allowing you to charge the device faster than any other on the market. Additionally, it boasts lasting through an entire day or more, if you so choose to go out after work.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 has a much smaller non-removable 2,550mAh battery. The Galaxy S6 features Fast Charging technology, allowing you to get a full charge in a little over an hour. It also has wireless charging capabilities. Unfortunately, the battery doesn’t last that long under regular use, so you may not be able to get a full day or more out of it.

Verdict: Moto X Style wins.

Software

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_app_launcher_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style will run the stock Android experience atop of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Of course, Motorola will include a few of its own signature Moto apps, such as Moto Display, Moto Assist and so on. As is the norm with Motorola, users should be able to get the latest version of Android before many other devices see it.

The Samsung Galaxy is running its own TouchWiz UI atop of Android 5.0 Lollipop, however, it is upgradeable to Android 5.1.1. Unlike the Moto X Style, Samsung’s UI is full of bloatware and modifications that slow down the overall performance. Samsung is also notoriously slow with updates, so it could take some time to see the latest of Android on this flagship.

Verdict: Moto X Style wins.

Price and Availability

Which do you prefer? The OnePlus 2 vs the Moto X Style

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

In case you missed it, yesterday was a pretty huge day. Two of what look like the best value Android smartphones out there were announced, the OnePlus 2 and the Motorola Moto X Style. The OnePlus 2 we always suspected would be fantastic value, much like its predecessor the OnePlus One, however the Moto X Style was a pleasant surprise, also touting fantastic value for flagship level specifications.

OnePlus 2 vs the Moto X StyleJust to quickly recap the OnePlus 2, for its second device OnePlus released a great package inside a 5.5-inch 1080p package. On the inside, the OnePlus 2 is powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, with two variants at 4GB RAM and 3GB RAM, and both with a 3,300mAh battery. You’ll get a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera and it perhaps most notably comes with a USB Type-C port, something no other phone has right now. It’s not all great as some unusual omissions like NFC and QuickCharge functionality means that the OnePlus 2 isn’t quite the absolute all-rounder we were hoping for. Still, starting at the price of $329 USD for the 3GB variant and $389 USD for the 4GB version, it’s hard to argue with what you get.

OnePlus 2 vs the Moto X StyleIn the other corner, we have the Moto X Style, an unusually massive device at 5.7-inches. It has a Quad HD display, which is powered by a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB RAM, 16/32/64GB storage with microSD expansion and has a 3,000mAh camera. The rear camera is a 21MP shooter and the front camera is a wide angle 5MP camera with a front facing flash. It’s also customizable on the Moto Maker website, giving it a ridiculous number of custom permutations. At $399 USD outright, we’re a bit stumped as to how Motorola is offering the Moto X Style at this price, but again, we’re not complaining. Oh, and in the US, the Moto X Style is known as the Moto X Pure Edition, in case you were confused.

What we’re really interested in at the moment is which one you prefer: the OnePlus 2 vs the Moto X Style? Let us know your choice in the comments below.

Motorola smartwatch passes through the FCC, new Moto 360 on the way?

moto 360 ifa aa (9 of 16)

If you haven’t had your fill of new Motorola devices following yesterday’s announcements, a Motorola branded smartwatch has just been spotted passing through the FCC in the US.

The FCC listing clearly states that this new product is a smartwatch, but unfortunately doesn’t give us many details about the hardware and there aren’t any pictures either. Although we can spot that the watch features Bluetooth 3.0 and LE 4.0 technologies, along with WiFi b/g/n support, which is rather standard stuff.

Motorola smartwatch FCC 2015

Our first thoughts immediately jump to a potential successor to Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch, but it seems that yesterday would have been the ideal time to launch such a product.

A listing at the FCC suggests that a release is not too far away, not to mention leaks earlier this year and all of the Moto 360 price drops lately. Perhaps we will hear something about Motorola’s new smartwatch at the IFA conference in September?

What is on your wishlist for Motorola’s next smartwatch? A new design, the same circular display, better hardware, or some other features?

Motorola is considering setting up a production unit in India

Motorola is the latest company looking to join the Make in India program. According to Marcus Frost, Senior Marketing Director of Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific at Motorola, the firm is currently evaluating options to set up a production unit in the country.

It would make perfect sense for Motorola to set up a production unit in India seeing as the majority of sales for its budget-friendly smartphones, predominantly the Moto E and Moto G, come from the region. This would enable the Lenovo-owned company to save money when it comes to importing the devices.

At present, nothing has been confirmed, but it’s certainly a feasible option if Motorola wants to cut costs and widen its profit margins.

New Motorola-branded smart watch passes through the FCC

Moto360__Metal_RGB

Earlier today, an unannounced Motorola smart watch made a pitstop at the United States of America’s official certification authority — the FCC. Information included in the brief filing documentation reveals that we’re more than likely looking at the upcoming successor to the company’s Moto 360 from last year.

Unfortunately, the paperwork doesn’t disclose anything about the internals or the design of the device, but we do know that it is set to pack a variety of different connectivity options, including support for Bluetooth Class 1 (Version 4.0, LE+EDR) and dual-band WiFi (802.11b/802.11g/802.11n).

Motorola Moto X Style versus OnePlus Two

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_about_phone_TA

We certainly saw some interesting devices launch this week, from OnePlus introducing the “2016 flagship killer,” the OnePlus Two to Motorola offering the Moto X Style, a flagship device at an affordable price point. That said, it could be hard choosing which one to pick up this summer.

Let’s see how the Moto X Style and OnePlus Two stacks up against one another, shall we?

Design

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_rear_panel_full_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style comes in at 153.9 x 76.2 x 11.1 mm and weighs 175 grams. It features a metal frame with a silicone removable back panel, and Motorola’s signature curved design. You’ll find volume buttons and power buttons on the sides. The SIM card slot is placed inside the removable rear panel.

The OnePlus Two sizes at 151.8 x 74.9 x 9.9 mm and similarly weighs 175 grams. It has a metal unibody, made from “strong and lightweight” metal. The OnePlus Two has your usual setup: volume rocker, power buttons, and SIM slot on the sides, however, OnePlus added an Alert Slider, allowing you to choose which notifications vibrate or provide sound.

Verdict: It’s too early to tell, as we don’t know just how well the OnePlus Two’s Alert Slider works. However, both are comfortable in the hand.

Hardware

oneplus_2_launch_never_settle

The OnePlus Two features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, sporting a quad-core Cortex-A53 and a 1.8GHz quad-core Cortex-A57 processor. You’ll also find a Adreno 430 GPU, options for 3 or 4GB of RAM and 16 or 64GB of internal storage. Additionally, it has no microSD card support, features a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, and finally, has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It also a USB Type-C port.

The Moto X Style sports a premium package, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset and a 1.8GHz dual-core Cortex-A57 and quad-core 1.44GHz Cortex-A53 processor. It has an Adreno 418 GPU, 16/32/64GB storage options, 3GB of RAM, microSD card support, a 21-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Motorola shied away from the USB Type-C port, opting for the traditional microUSB solution.

Verdict: It’s a tie. Both offer high-end hardware, and merely comes down to a choice of microSD card support and an extra gig of RAM.

Display

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_flat_TA

The Motorola Moto X Style has a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 AMOLED display, with a pixel density of 520ppi. It also sports Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection and has a 74.9% screen-to-body ratio.

The OnePlus Two sports a 5.5-inch LTPS LCD 1920 x 1080 display, with a pixel density of 401ppi. Additionally, you will find Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 and a 73.3% screen-to-body ratio.

Verdict: The Motorola Moto X Style wins for its extremely high resolution and pixel density, working together to produce a vivid experience.

Battery

oneplus_2_company_logo_closeup_partial_blur

The OnePlus Two has a 3,300mAh non-removable battery, boasting up to approximately x hours of battery life.

The Motorola Moto X Style features a 3,000mAh battery with TurboCharge technology, allowing you to charge the device faster than any other on the market. Additionally, it boasts up to x hours of battery life.

Verdict: The Motorola X Style wins. Although it has a small battery, it’s efficiency is high-end, and TurboCharge technology will allow you to get a quick charge for a night out after work.

Software

motorola_moto_x_style_launch_assist_TA

The OnePlus Two will run OxygenOS atop of Google’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system. It’s a fairly clean skin with very few additions, however, it does include support for custom icon packs and icon grid resizing.

The Motorola Moto X Style will run the stock Android experience atop of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Of course, Motorola will include a few of its own signature Moto apps, such as Moto Display, Moto Assist and so on.

Verdict: It’s a tie, as it comes down to a matter of preference.

Availability and Price

oneplus_2_pricing_models

The OnePlus Two will launch on August 11, costing $329 for the 16GB model and $389 for the 64GB model.

Similarly, the Motorola Moto X Style will launch sometime in September, costing consumers a mere $399 for an unlocked and high-end smartphone.

Verdict: It’s a tie.

Wrap Up

motorola_logo_six_styles

Motorola and OnePlus are both offering premium devices packed with high-end specifications and a beautiful pure Android experience. There are downsides to both devices, such as the OnePlus Two opting to rid of microSD support and the Moto X Style lacking a USB Type-C connector. However, they’re both impressive devices with their own unique aspects and consumers won’t be disappointed with either choice.

What is your preference? The Motorola Moto X Style or the OnePlus Two?
