Motorola announces multitude of updates, including “KitKat sweetness” for Canada and Australia
Motorola took to its blog yesterday to announce that despite the chilly weather, it’s not preventing its engineers from churning out software updates.
Among the updates are a new “Motorola Gallery”, offering an enhanced UI with faster navigation, a streamlined album drawer and bigger/boulder thumbnails, and an update to “Motorola Migrate,” making it easier to migrate from from an iPhone with the ability to transfer iCloud contacts and calendar events right from the app and not just in the MotoMaker web tool.
The latest version of Android 4.4.2 KitKat is also coming to more devices. Moto started releasing KitKat to the Boost Mobile Moto G in the U.S. and Australia and to the Moto X on Rogers and Fido in Canada.
All this being said, the new Google-owned Moto is definitely keeping its word in delivering timely software updates worldwide.
Please note that while “Motorola Migrate” can be used on any Android smartphone to migrate to a new Moto smartphone, “Motorola Gallery” can only be installed on supported devices, the Moto G and X, and Verizon’s Droid Ultra, Mini and Maxx.

Moto X $100 off this Monday
Moto X will be $100 off for one hour January 27th
Mark your calendars, prep the bank account and stretch your F5 finger. Motorola is running a super sweet discount deal on the much loved and talked about Moto X. They just pushed out the Twitter notification a little bit ago to let people know about it and I am sure it won’t be the last time we hear about the sale.
On January 27th, that is Monday, between 3 and 4 pm EST you can pick up the 16GB Moto X customized to your liking for just $299 and the 32Gb variant will be $349.
Xtra sweet deal alert: Jan 27 3-4PM ET $100 off any #MotoX w/o contract while supplies last… (1/2)

That is a pretty mean trick to do to the working class out there. I wonder how many people will be taking a ‘bathroom break’ or just take the day off to try and grab a Moto X. If you can’t manage to pick one up during that magical hour you still have another chance to save some money on the purchase. After the $100 off sale the device will be knocked down $70 through Valentines day.
Motorola discounts Moto X by $100 for one hour, or by $70 until Valentine’s Day
The Valentine’s Day deals are already beginning, and this time it’s the Moto X
Motorola seems to be on a discount frenzy the past few weeks. Maybe it’s because sales aren’t that great, or maybe it’s because Google now owns them. Either way, a pretty nice deal is going on through Motomaker beginning in a few days.
Motorola recently tweeted:
Xtra sweet deal alert: Jan 27 3-4PM ET $100 off any #MotoX w/o contract while supplies last… (1/2)
If you miss out, you can still get $70 off any #MotoX w/o contract until Valentine’s Day. (2/2)
To be honest, this is a really great deal, especially because this is one of the best Android phones to exist. And being that it’s off-contract, you definitely don’t want to miss out on this one.

Motorola CEO talks $50 Smartphones and Custom Screen-Size Options
Motorola had quite a bad run for a number of years. After Google acquired them though, things have dramatically turned around the company. 2013 was definitely a good year for Moto with the Moto X and especially the Moto G. Motorolas CEO, Dennis Woodside, is quite the leader and quite the speaker. Minus all the public spectacles, I would put him right up there with John Legere as far as creating some change in the mobile space. His latest interview with Trusted Review certainly was full of interesting conversation that may or may not surprise you.
In the states, the Moto G at $179 is a pretty great bargain, especially for what it is capable of. It is literally all over the place at varying prices and even up for grabs at $99.99 with Verizon pre-paid. However, Woodside is brings up this price tag and talks how it is still quite a large chunk of change for many parts of the world. Apparently Motorola is looking for ways to deliver a similar device to a global market at an even lower price point.
“We’re going to look at that and just delivering on that value promise is super important. I mean why can’t these devices be $50? There’s no reason that can’t happen so we’re going to push that.”
It will take a lot of work to bring out an off-contract device that lands at or near the $50 price tag. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen though. This direction and out-of-the-boxing thinking is exactly what the OEM’s of the world need to start looking towards. Sure, it might be a bit more of a low to mid-ranged device, but that is the point. If everyone could buy a Galaxy S4, Note 3, HTC One or even a Nexus 5 at full price they would. Even the contracted prices are sometimes more than people can afford.
Also on the docket was mention of introducing even more customization for those higher-end more premium devices. The Moto X is the current example of customizing colors and wood backplates, but Woodside wants to do more. He mentions, “Today you have colours and beginning of materials but you don’t have screen size and you don’t have functionality and we’re going to bring all that in in the next year or so.” Which sounds an awful like Project Ara if you ask me. That was the Phonebloks partnership with Motorola for fully customizable and interchangeable smartphone blocks. Basically choose your screen size as the base and add what you need and want ‘right now’ then upgrade pieces and more in the future when you have some more money.
It doesn’t sound like Motorola is going to be changing their approach to the smartphone industry anytime soon. I really look forward to seeing what Moto puts out to the world this year. What about you guys?

Motorola CEO: Why not a $50 smartphone?
So you thought the $399 Moto X and $179 Moto G were great prices, eh? What if we told you that Motorola thinks they could go lower – much lower, in fact? Moto CEO Dennis Woodside, speaking recently with Trusted Reviews, feels like we should be able to get all the way down to $50 smartphones. Yes, without contracts.
“In much of the world $179 is a lot of money so there’s a big market at a price point of less than $179…We’re going to look at that and just delivering on that value promise is super important. I mean why can’t these devices be $50? There’s no reason that can’t happen so we’re going to push that.”
Looking ahead, Motorola hopes to bring even more customization to the top end of the smartphone line. Without getting into specifics, Woodside hinted at screen sizes and “functionality”. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long for some of these features to roll out.
“On the more premium side we’re pushing more customisation,” he told us. “Today you have colours and beginning of materials but you don’t have screen size and you don’t have functionality and we’re going to bring all that in in the next year or so.”

Motorola brings Prip’s push-to-talk service to the iPhone
Sprint’s iDEN network shutdown may have quashed hopes for an iPhone with native push-to-talk support, but that won’t matter much now that Motorola has brought Prip’s service to iOS. The new app lets American iOS 7 users instantly speak to both fellow Prip members as well as Nextel subscribers in Latin America. Many of the features will be familiar to those who tried the Android version, although the cross-platform launch introduces universal sign-ins and web-based account control; you’re no longer tied to Google Play. Whether you’re chatting with a friend or a whole company, you can grab Prip from the App Store today.

Motorola Migrate can now shepherd iOS users (and their data) to a new life on Android
If a Motorola device has recently charmed you away from the iPhone, make sure to check out the company’s Migrate app. Moto just refreshed the transfer tool to add iOS support (similar to the one found on MotoMaker), making it easier to transfer iCloud data to Google’s services — so long as you have a supported handset. Unfortunately, it’ll only work with the Moto X, Moto G, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini at the moment, and it can only port calendar entries and contacts. Still, those are two things to slash off your list when moving phones, leaving you with more time to worry about transferring all those selfies.

Comcast discontinues AnyPlay in-home IPTV device, preps cloud Xfinity TV apps
Back in 2012 Comcast rolled out AnyPlay, a headless (read: not connected directly to a TV) cable box that turned its live TV channels into internet streams users could watch on iOS or Android devices inside the home. Now in 2014 Comcast is discontinuing the AnyPlay service and nudging customers towards other options like Xfinity TV Go and other new features it will roll out later this year. Like a Slingbox that only worked within the house, compared to other cable TV apps AnyPlay had the advantage of directly supporting all the channels, but the downside of requiring additional hardware. It also looks like the leased Motorola Televation boxes that did the TV-to-IPTV magic will be going back soon, as the mobile apps will disappear from stores after March 31st.
So what’s in store for the future? Last week at an investors conference, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts showed off a new Xfinity TV app that brings full live TV, video on-demand and DVR access on phones and tablets. We showed you the app last year, which Roberts revealed is being tested in Boston this month and is scheduled to roll out across much of the country this year. It’s all part of the new X1 / X2 TV platform which brings more apps to the TV and “turns mobile devices into virtual TV sets” — hopefully without blanking them out nationwide. Multichannel News adds that Comcast is also testing out gateway devices from Arris that, like AnyPlay, don’t connect to directly to a TV, but will push video throughout the home to TVs and mobile devices alike. Comcast also mentioned that at the end of last year, it added to its total number of TV customers for the first time in over six years. We’ll see if these new features — along with cheap internet combo packages — can pull in more customers, or if people choose life with another provider, or no traditional TV service at all.
