Motorola to offer Moto X with football leather back

moto x football backHere’s some exciting news for American football fans; it looks like you’re soon going to be able to pick up a Moto X with a football leather back.

Motorola already offers a leather option for devices created with MotoMaker, but this new back will reportedly look and feel just like a football. The company that supplies Motorola with their leather also happens to be the sole supplier of the NFL’s footballs, so expect something high quality.

The new option is slated to be available in the third week of November, and it’ll probably cost you an extra $25 on top of your other customization options like the current leather options.

One for the football fans: Moto X 2014 with football leather cover coming in late November

Moto X 2014 with football leather coverWhen Motorola introduced the original Moto X, it launched with it arguably one of its more interesting services, the Moto Maker. While we don’t have stats on how effective it is in driving sales or engaging customers, the idea of being able to customize and tailor your new Moto X in whatever way pleases you seems pretty neat. Motorola is continuing its good work with its latest device and is apparently set to release a Moto X 2014 with football leather cover in the third week of November.

This option would compliment Motorola’s already burgeoning assortment of customizations which include plastic, leather and wood. The football leather is obviously designed to feel like a real football (or as the rest of the world might know it, a gridiron ball), and would probably make it slightly easier to hold on to your new Moto X with the added grip. The leaked image above shows a Verizon variant of the Moto X rocking the football leather, though we don’t know if the cover will be carrier exclusive or not. Furthermore, we’re not entirely sure of the pricing either, but if we go off the $25 cost of the standard leather cover, it shouldn’t be much more than that if at all.

Currently, the tracker states that all the above-mentioned smartphones have been “confirmed” to receive the Lollipop update, but none of them have entered the development stage as of yet.

The Nexus 6 Ambient Display resembles Moto Display

nexus6_alternating_700w

One of the most loved features of the Moto X (2013) and the new Moto X (2014) is the active display, or now dubbed Moto Display. This feature allows you to glance at incoming notifications without powering on the display, and for the new Moto X, without even touching it. I have a 1st Gen Moto X, and I don’t think I can ever go to another device because I love this feature too much… until now.

Ambient Display on the Nexus 6

Above is a picture of a Nexus 4 with Ambient Display being used (the Nexus 4 has the system from the Nexus 6), a new feature Google has included on the Nexus 6. This feature is included on the Nexus 6 spec sheet, but it was unclear what it was. It’s also not clear whether this will be included on other devices with Android Lollipop or not. We will update when we have more info.

It’s worth noting that the standby time of the Nexus 6 is reduced from 330 hours to 250 hours with this feature turned on, but it is most likely not a big issue in day-to-day use.

Excited to have another device with a feature similar to Moto Display?

“Ambient display” appears to be Nexus 6 spin on Moto Display

nexus_6_display_settings_ambient_display

When Motorola introduced the Moto X, one of the angles Motorola took in making their sales pitch for the device was how software features could be more useful and valuable than top of the line specs in a smartphone. To drive home this point, they included a variety of features including one originally called Active Display, now Moto Display, that would cause the display to turn on when a notification was received or when it detected the phone had been picked up. It looks like that same feature has found its way into the Nexus 6.

A screenshot of some display setting for the Nexus 6 shows an entry for a feature called “Ambient display” with a description that reads “Wake screen when device picked up or notifications arrive.” This seems to clearly suggest Google benefited from having Motorola produce the Nexus 6.

On the Play Store page for the Nexus 6, there are a couple entries that include a reference to “Ambient Display.” The entries outline the potential impact on standby time for the device if Ambient Display is turned on, which appears to be about a 25% reduction. Despite the hit to battery life, the feature is considered a great convenience and difficult to give up once one gets used to it.

Moto X now $50 on-contract with Verizon

motox20142_1020.0 (1)

If you’re looking to upgrade soon and you’re on Verizon, we have just the deal for you. The Moto X 2014 is now only $50 on-contract through Moto Maker. You can design your phone on the website, personalize it with engravings and metallic trim, and have it shipped to your doorstep for the low price.

Add ons like expanded storage and wood or leather finish on the back of the device cost $50 and $25 extra, respectively, so if you’re in the mood to splurge more, you could add both of these premium upgrades and still be below the normal on-contract price for flagships of $200.

Nexus 6 vs Moto X (2014): A civil war within Motorola

moto x 2014 vs nexus 6

Google has finally announced their long-rumored and leaked Nexus 6. As expected, this phone is being manufactured by Motorola, who also fairly recently announced their newest flagship, the Moto X (2014). So, how do the two newest phones from Motorola compare to one another? Read on to find out!

http://smartphones.findthebest.com/w/61ugskDkIBL

One of the things to note, is that the Moto X (2014) is a more average sized smartphone with a 5.2″ screen, while the Nexus 6 is definitely a phablet with a massive 5.96″ screen. However, the Nexus 6 has a nicer display with a whopping 493 ppi, while the Moto X has 424 ppi. Both are AMOLED displays, so their the same in that regard, which means the Nexus 6 comes out on top here.

The battery is a weird tie, with the Nexus 6 getting way more talk time at 24 hours, while the Moto X has 13 hours. However, the Moto X has 576 hours on standby while the Nexus 6 has 300 hours. The Moto X has a 2,300 mAh battery, while the Nexus 6 has a 3,220 mAh.

The Nexus 6 likely has better performance, with a newer Snapdragon 805 processor, and 3 GB of RAM, and the newest version of Android (though the Moto X should update soon).

Cameras are the same, except the Nexus 6 will have Optical Image Stabilization. The Nexus 6 will have wireless charging, while Moto X will not.

It’s also worth noting that the Moto X has a lot of choice with Moto Maker, allowing you to make your device your own. Moto X also has Moto Voice, Moto Display, and other features. The Nexus 6 will have a feature like Moto Voice, but without the ability to customize a hotword.

To top it all off, the Nexus 6 costs $649 unlocked, while the Moto X costs $499 unlocked.

After all is said and done, it’s hard to choose a winner here. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the Nexus 6 will only have newer software for a little bit as it’s expected the Moto X will be updated very soon. Honestly, I think it comes down to preference. The Nexus 6 is a much bigger device, so you’d have to be looking for a bigger display to get it.

We’ll leave it up to you. Vote in the comments below: Which do you think is a better device, Nexus 6 vs Moto X (2014)

Motorola plans to update 9 devices with Android 5.0 Lollipop in near future

By now I am sure you are all aware that the Motorola Nexus 6 has been announced. It is slated for a late October pre-order date with availability in November. Google has confirmed that Android L is indeed Android 5.0 Lollipop and the new Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will all run it out of the box. They also confirmed the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 will get Lollipop along side the Google Play Edition devices as well. During the flurry of information this morning Motorola also put out an additional announcement that pertained to a number of their current devices on the market and Android 5.0.

Motorola Android 5.0 Lollipop

As it sits currently, Motorola plans to move a total of 9 devices to the new OS eventually. I only say eventually because they have to wit until Google officially makes Android 5.0 available. While it is what is install out of the box on the new Nexus line, it still isn’t really real yet. Once that happens Motorola can officially start pushing updates to devices. The timing per device and carrier will vary, of course.  Here is the current list of device that Motorola has plans to update.

  • Moto X (both 1st and 2nd gen)
  • Moto G (both 1st and 2nd gen)
  • Moto G with 4G LTE
  • Moto E
  • Droid Ultra
  • Droid Maxx
  • Droid Mini

Motorola Android 5.0

I am quite sure they will add the Droid Turbo to the list as soon as that device is announced. You can keep tabs on each device, and any new devices to make the cut, over at the Motorola Software update page that is dedicated to Android 5.0. We will be keeping tabs on Lollipop news as it hits for different devices, so expect to see updates for a while.
