Moto X (2014) gains handy new feature in Android 5.1 update

New Moto Action debuts called Chop twice for Flashlight

chop_twice

The second generation Moto X is starting to receive its Android 5.1 software update. Included as part of the update is support for HD calls, quicker access to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, and enhanced security.

Motorola, for its part, has also introduced a new feature called Chop twice for Flashlight. Essentially you chop the phone twice in the air is if using on an invisible cutting board and you’ll turn on the flashlight. Do it again and you’ll turn it off.

Don’t look for the 5.1 update on your U.S. version just yet; Motorola has only deployed this select models in Brazil. Other markets and carriers are expected in short order.

In addition to the Moto X, Motorola has readied the 5.1 update for its 2015 version of the Moto E 4G LTE and is working on the same for the Verizon Droid Turbo.

Motorola rolls out maintenance update for some devices

DROID_Turbo_Back_Slanted_Camera_Motorola_Logo_TA

Motorola is rolling out a new maintenance update to fix an emergency dialing bug for the first and second-gen Moto X, Nexus 6, Droid Turbo, Moto Maxx/Turbo, Droid Ultra, and Moto X Pro.

The bug this update fixes only happens in rare situations, such as having an encrypted phone with “PIN to start” enabled. When you power on the phone and use the emergency dialer shortcut, you will be able to hear the dispatcher, but the dispatcher cannot hear you, Motorola says.

The bug mainly happens when you go straight for the emergency dialer shortcut upon startup. In most cases, the problem can be avoided by keeping your smartphone powered on. When the phone is fully powered on, the issue is avoided, Motorola says. If your phone isn’t powered on, and you have PIN-to-start enabled, simply entering the PIN and waiting for the phone to finish booting up will avoid the issue.

The update should be coming your way soon, if it hasn’t already. Have you experienced this problem? Be sure to let us know in the comments!

Possible 3rd-gen Moto X specs leak, shows higher resolution screen and Snapdragon 808 CPU

Moto_X_2014_2nd_Gen_Slanted_Back_Motorola_Logo_Camera_Lens_01_TAIf you’ve been holding off on taking advantage of one of Motorola’s deals on the Moto X for whatever they’re planning on introducing this year, we don’t blame you. Up until now, we hadn’t really heard anything about the upcoming third-generation Moto X, however, but thanks to a new leak we’ve got an idea of what kind of hardware to expect.

This leak shows some hardware similar to the Motorola manufactured Droid Turbo, including a 5.2-inch 1440 x 2560 resolution screen, a Snapdragon 808 processor, and a crazy 4 GB of RAM. The camera looks to be a 16 megapixel shooter, and you’ll have the option between 32 and 64 GB storage options. Plus, it’s a new Motorola phone, so expect normal MotoMaker customization, too.

Motorola will probably be showing this one off in September, so you’ve got a while to think on it. We’ll keep you updated as the leaks keep coming.

The 1st and 2nd generation Moto X should be receiving Android 5.1 soon

Motorola_Moto_E_Back_Slanted_TAMotorola has released some support documents that seem to indicate that both the older and newer versions of the Moto X should be seeing the Android 5.1 update pretty soon. The original Moto X is currently on Android 4.4, so this update should leapfrog Google’s initial Lollipop update.

The documents show feature changes for the Moto X 2nd Gen, and the T-Mobile version of the same device. Another document does specifically mention the 1st generation device, and it obviously is seeing the bigger jump since it’s coming from KitKat.

There’s no word on exactly when these updates should start rolling out, but Motorola usually tries to be as timely as possible with their flagship phones, so hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later.

Alleged third-gen Moto X specs surface

Alleged specs leak for the third-gen Motorola Moto X

PhoneArena tells of a report that came out earlier today on Cinco de Mayo of specs for the third-generation Motorola Moto X.

This report states that the newest Moto X will have the same 5.2-inch 1440 by 2560 resolution display as that on the Droid Turbo. Additionally, it will contain a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor with 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. The device comes with a 16MP Clear Pixel rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and Android 5.1.1.

The third-generation Moto X is expected to be released this September.

Motorola getting ready to release Android 5.1 for Moto X (2013 & 2014), Moto E (2015) in the U.S.

new moto x first look aa (19 of 21)

It’s been a couple of months since we’ve gotten our first taste of Android 5.1 Lollipop, and the update has already begun rolling out to a number of different devices. If you’re the owner of a Moto X (1st Gen. or 2nd Gen.) or Moto E (2nd Gen.) and happen to live in the United States, you’re in luck. By the looks of it, Motorola is preparing to roll out Android 5.1 to your mobile devices any day now.

Motorola has just posted release notes laying out what users can expect with the update to Android 5.1. For folks who own a Moto X (2nd Gen.) on AT&T, your software version will be upgraded to version 23.11.21, and Moto X (2nd Gen.) owners on T-Mobile (or Pure Edition Moto X owners) will see their software version jump up to 23.11.14. In addition, 1st Gen. Moto X owners in the U.S. will see software version 222.21.2, and Moto E (2nd Gen.) owners will be upgraded to version 23.11.15.

Now, Android 5.1 is a big update, but not in terms of software features specific to individual Motorola devices. (Check out this video for all of the changes you’ll see in Android 5.1). The big news here is that Motorola is planning to release 5.1 to these devices any moment now, so we need to keep our eye out for updates in the near future.

If you get the update on your device, be sure to let us know! Otherwise, we’ll let you know if we hear anything.

Motorola takes a jibe at LG, points out they had a leather clad smartphone before them

motoleather

The launch of the LG G4 has obviously given the competition something to think about. And Motorola is not wasting any time in taking a jibe at LG, claiming that they had a leather covered smartphone a good one year before the LG G4.

Motorola is clearly referencing the Moto X here, which comes in leather as well as standard polycarbonate variants. LG hasn’t particularly been vocal about the leather back cover on the LG G4, but it will be interesting to see what the company has to say in response to this. It is possible that LG will charge an additional fee for the leather clad G4, which is what Motorola does with the Moto X as well.

The LG G4 has a bit more customization on its leather back panel compared to the Moto X, so the Korean manufacturer has an advantage there. Customers will be able to get the LG G4 from Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile as well as retailers like Best Buy and Amazon starting next month.

Would you prefer the LG G4 to the Moto X? Let us know below.

Original Moto X Android 5.1 update begins rolling out, starting with Brazil

moto-x-aa-black-front

At the beginning of this month we learned from Motorola’s David Schuster that the Moto X (1st gen), Moto E (1st gen), and the Moto G with LTE (1st gen) would all be making the jump from KitKat directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop. With Android 5.1 already available on the Moto X (2014), you may be wondering how much longer before the original Moto X will see it. If a new OTA release in Brazil is any indication, the wait might not be so long.

Several reports are coming in with news that Brazil is seeing Android 5.1 on the Moto X (2013) starting today. It’s unclear if this is a soak test or a full OTA rollout for the region. As for what’s new, unless you managed to get on an Android 5.0 soaktest for the Moto X, the update will be your first taste of all the changes that Lollipop brings to the table such as improved notifications, changes to the mult-tasking menu, and more. As for what 5.1 brings over 5.0, we’re looking at mostly a bug-busting update, though you can get a solid rundown of the biggest changes here.

If all goes as planned, the worldwide rollout of Android 5.1 to the Moto could begin as early as next month. Of course individual carrier versions will likely be among the last to see the update.

Deal: 32GB Moto X Developer Edition for only $149.99

moto x vs nexus 4 aa performance x specs

The original Motorola Moto X didn’t exactly have the most bleeding-edge specs when it first arrived on the market, and now that a little over a year and half has passed the spec sheet is looking even more dated. But don’t let that fool you, this is still a great handset. The Moto X was never about raw power, instead it aimed to show that user experience is just as, if not more, important than the spec sheet by bringing unique user-facing features like touchless control and active display technology.

For those that have modest needs and don’t need the latest and greatest, the Moto X is still very much worth picking up even today. This is especially true for those that take up eBay seller thegoodblokes offer for the Moto X Developer Edition, unlocked and ready to go for just $149.99 in your choice of black or white. The unit is model number XT1060 and supports both unlocked GSM networks and Verizon’s CDMA network.

As a quick recap, the Moto X features a 4.7-inch 720p display, Motorola’s X8 computing system (centered around a Snapdragon S4), a 10MP rear cam, 32GB storage, and is capable of being updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. For a full rundown of what to expect, be sure to check out our review.

So how about it, anyone planning on picking up the original Moto X for under $200?
