LG Watch Urbane heads to the Google Store in 13 countries by end of April

lg_watch_urbane_stacked

Next on the Android Wear release schedule is the LG Watch Urbane. This evening, LG issued a press release that states the smartwatch will be available through the Google Store in thirteen countries by the end of April (or next week). Along with an unspecified date, LG did not provide a price. Also, this is merely for the rollout of the Watch Urbane and that means shipping will likely take place at a later time. It could be June before anyone gets their smartwatch.

The wait could be worth it, however, as the Watch Urbane has specifications to put it at the top of its class. The completely round 1.3-inch display has 320×320 resolution and P-OLED technology. Inside is the usual Snapdragon 400 processor and collection of sensors. Two unique feature are LG Call for viewing recent calls and LG Pulse for monitory heart rate with no pause. And, right out of the box, the Watch Urbane has the latest version of Android Wear.

Being that the G Watch R has a $299 price tag, the Watch Urbane could reach $349.

Hit the break for the full press release.

PREMIUM LG WATCH URBANE FIRST NEW ANDROID WEAR DEVICE TO FEATURE LATEST OS

Elegant Designed Smartwatch Rolls Out Worldwide With Latest Technology and Performance

SEOUL, Apr. 23, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) will begin the global rollout of its premium LG Watch Urbane this week in South Korea to be followed by key markets in North America, Europe and Asia in the weeks to come. Customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States will be able to purchase the LG Watch Urbane on Google Store starting this month.

At MWC 2015, the LG Watch Urbane received numerous awards and accolades from consumers, media and industry thought leaders for its modern design, full-circle Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display and overall usefulness. The LG Watch Urbane carries over the 1.3-inch P-OLED display from the LG G Watch R but features a less prominent and lower profile bezel. Its dimensions are smaller overall and thinner, without reducing the size of the display or the battery.

Responding to consumers’ desire for style as well as function, the LG Watch Urbane has a full metal body with a stitched genuine leather strap. The stainless steel body is available in a luxurious polished rose gold and silver, accentuated further with a narrow bezel that gives the device the sleek lines of a classic timepiece. Unlike many other competing smartwatches, the band can be exchanged with any replacement 22mm leather, silicone or metal strap for the ultimate in convenience and personalization.

LG Watch Urbane is the first new smartwatch powered by the latest version of Android Wear which works seamlessly with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above. Some of the features available for the first time on any Android Wear device include Wi-Fi connectivity, always-on apps to keep the display from going dark when running, navigating or even grocery shopping and an improved UX that makes launching favorite apps and getting in touch with friends easier than ever before with everything now front-and-center.

The latest OS allows users to send emojis by drawing them directly on the LG Watch Urbane. Draw a smiley face, a clock showing a certain time or any other pictures and Android Wear will match your drawing to the closest Unicode emoji for sending to another Android Wear watch, smartphone, or computer. Other improvements include the ability to change the font size and see notifications even when looking at another function on the display, such as directions. What’s more, the screen on the LG Watch Urbane can now be set to lock automatically when it is removed from the wrist.

Included in LG Watch Urbane are two new and useful features not available on other Android Wear devices: LG Call and LG Pulse. LG Call allows the wearer to access recent calls and the favorite contacts list on the connected smartphone to dial out directly from the watch. When connected to a Bluetooth headset, there is no need to remove the phone from one’s pocket to place a call. And LG Pulse takes health monitoring to a whole new level by measuring the wearer’s heart rate every second during exercise with no maximum time limit. At the end of the activity, LG Pulse will report the average heart rate over the entire duration of the activity and display a heart rate graph on LG Health (coming soon).

“The LG Watch Urbane is the third Android Wear device introduced by LG in the past year which demonstrates our commitment to this platform,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “More importantly, LG Watch Urbane is a perfect example that Android Wear watches can be functional and beautiful and a useful accessory that complements any wardrobe. No one would mistake LG Watch Urbane for a computer on your wrist.”

Price and additional purchase details will be announced locally at the time of availability.

New LG G4 teaser video shows off the device’s leather back

LG has just sent out a new 15-second teaser video, highlighting the upcoming G4’s leather backing. We’ve already gotten word from the company that the device will have a vegetable-tanned leather back, but it’s nice to see the device in action before its launch on the 28th.

LG hasn’t exactly kept quite about the G4’s specifications over the past few weeks. We know that the device will feature a 16MP rear-facing camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a big 5.5-inch QHD display, and will come with LG’s updated UX 4.0 software overlay. If you’re interested in learning more, a number of additional rumors and specifications can be found in our official LG G4 rumor roundup.

Are you excited for the G4’s leather back? Or would you rather have the device made of something else?

LG G4 screen to have slight curve

lg_g4_back_cover_variety

A new report out of Korea ahead of next week’s LG G4 release says the forthcoming smartphone will have a slightly curved screen to go with the rest of the hardware packed in to the new device. According to the report, the LG G4 will have a 3000-mm curve to the screen. This level of curvature is also present in other LG devices like the LG Magna and LG Spirit, so the company is not exactly breaking new ground.

For comparison, the LG G Flex 2 comes with a 700-mm curvature for a much more dramatic effect. Even the Samsung Galaxy Round, which curves along the x-axis, is a 400-mm radius.

The curvature present in the LG G4 may not be very noticeable to users and is probably so slight as to not offer much in the way of improved usability or features. However, the slight curve may help it survive drops since it will not fall flat.

While the curved screen will give LG some novelty points to play up when trying to sell the phone, expect more emphasis to be placed on features like the cameras and the removable back giving access to the battery. In particular, the G4’s f/1.8 sensor should give LG a noticeable edge over competitor devices like the Samsung Galaxy S6. LG is also packing in an 8MP front-facing camera for some seriously high-quality selfies.

The successor to the G3 Stylus is called G Stylo and is coming from Friday

lg g stylo

Taking a break from unveiling the G4 in slow motion, LG launched today a new mid-range device called the G Stylo.

The G Stylo is the spiritual successor of last year’s G3 Stylus, though LG seems to be transitioning away from the “G#” naming scheme. Featuring a 5.7-inch display of 720p resolution (258ppi), the G Stylo will look positively ancient aside the Quad HD G4, though the large screen may help it redeem itself in the eyes of its users.

The device is powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor (1.2GHz) and features 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable), an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front shooter, along a decent 3,000 mAh battery.

The G Stylo, which is rather bulky for today’s standards at 154.3 x 79.2 x 9.6mm and 163 grams, will be available in white or titanium gray.

The G Stylo’s special feature is of course its rubber-tipped stylus, which works in conjunction with software features that LG baked into the Android 5 Lollipop to give users more control over their devices.

The G Stylo will initially be released on Friday in Korea, with markets in Latin America and elsewhere to follow from May. LG has not announced its official price, but according to Korea Times, the company hinted at a price tag of around 500,000 won or around $460.

Some of you are probably disappointed that LG hasn’t unleashed a high-end stylus-equipped device yet. The good news is LG is rumored to be working on a smartphone that’s “more premium” than the G4, and though there’s no guarantee, it would make sense for the Korean company to try to compete with Samsung’s Note concept. But we’ll probably have to wait for a few months for that.

5.7-inch LG G Stylo announced for Korea

LG on Wednesday introduced its latest plus-sized smartphone, the G Stylo, for its Korean market. Running Android 5.0 Lollipop, the handset features a 5.7-inch HD IPS display and an 8-megapixel rear camera.  And, as the name somewhat implies, it features a built in stylus.

Under the hood you’ll find a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 1.5GB RAM. Nothing too powerful, but we’re expecting LG will keep the price nice and affordable.

Other specifications include 8GB storage with microSD expansion support up to 2 TB, a 3000mAh battery, and support for 4G LTE.

It’s not clear whether this might make its way stateside however we wouldn’t hold our breath.

The LG G4 will be ever so slightly curved with a 3000mm radius curve

The LG G Flex 2 isn’t going to be LG‘s only curved smartphone this year. News has dropped that LG’s next flagship device, the LG G4, will in fact have a r3000 graded curve from top to bottom, which if I’m not mistake equates to a 3000mm radius curvature – for reference, the Flex 2 has a curvature of 700mm along the same axis. As you can probably guess, it’s a much less noticeable curve than on the Flex 2, but it’s there nonetheless and should subtly add to the feel of the LG G4 in the palm of your hand. This would also imply that the LG G4 will have a slightly curved display as well, which should also add to the usability of the screen.

The LG G4 is expected to be officially announced on April 28th and makes several notable depatures from its predecessor. Most notably, the LG G4 will be available with leather cover backs (but also in plastic) and LG has profusely teased the device’s brand new f1.8 rear camera lens. It’s definitely one of the devices to watch this year, but we’ll have to see if it holds a torch to Samsung’s offering in the Galaxy S6.

LG’s G Stylo phablet has a 5.7-Inch HD display and Stylus pen

LG G Stylo - with Stylus

We’ve heard rumours for a while that LG was going to release another handset with a built-in stylus, and here it is. It’s called the LG G Stylo and it should become available from May 5th in major overseas regions. We have the specifications after the break.

LG has pushed out a few Android smartphones with a built-in stylus in recent times, but the Korean company is still not quite ready to go after Samsung’s Galaxy Note series. Instead, LG is content to carry on learning its trade by pushing out the wallet-friendly G Stylo that boasts a 5.7-inch display, as well as that all-important stylus.

Specifications:

  • 5.7-Inch IPS 720p display with 258ppi
  • Quad-core Snapdragon 410 @ 1.2GHz (64-bit)
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal Storage
  • MicroSD card support
  • 8MP Main camera
  • 5MP Front camera
  • Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • NFC, A-GPS
  • LTE network support
  • Battery: 3,000mAh (removable)
  • Dimensions: 154.3 x 79.2 x 9.6mm
  • Weight: 163 grams
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • Stylus

No word on pricing or exactly where the LG G Stylo will be available although it is said to be affordable and available in titanium or white. Let us know in the comments if this a handset you will be looking out for.

LG confirms the G Watch doesn’t have WiFi built-in

LG_G_Watch_Main_Screen_Standby_TA

With Android Wear 5.1 expected to bring the WiFi feature to smartwatches, there has been much speculation about which devices will get the feature. Bad news awaits early adopters of the Android Wear platform as LG has confirmed that its G Watch will not get the WiFi feature when the new update is rolled out over the coming weeks.

This is perhaps the only Android Wear smartwatch out there that doesn’t support WiFi due to lack of necessary hardware. LG has mentioned that the G Watch R and the Watch Urbane come with WiFi preinstalled, so these devices should get the feature as scheduled.

Strangely, the Samsung Gear Live which was announced alongside the G Watch in mid 2014 was revealed to have a WiFi chip built in by teardowns, so it’s likely that the Samsung wearable will receive support for the feature as well.

Motorola and Sony have openly confirmed that their devices (Moto 360 and Sony SmartWatch 3) will be getting the WiFi feature with Android Wear 5.1. The ASUS ZenWatch has also been revealed to be packing WiFi support.

That leaves the LG G Watch to be the only device at this point which will not have support for the feature. The smartwatch will still receive the all new app-drawer, contacts, emojis and some other nifty features, so not all hope is lost for the users.

Do you own a G Watch? What do you make of the news?

LG G4 will hit retailers on April 29th in South Korea

lg-g4-press-render-710

The LG G4 is expected to be formally unveiled on April 28th in New York, London, and Paris with a second unveiling event on the 29th in Seoul, Singapore, and Istanbul. Of course, we already know just about everything there is to know about the phone, including its aesthetics, camera, its display, and even certain elements of its software. Arguably all there’s left to do is release the phone, and apparently that might be just what LG is doing.

LG has now confirmed that the LG G4 will go on sale in South Korean on April 29th, the same day it is formally shown off in Seoul.

What about the rest of the world? LG hasn’t confirmed if this date will apply internationally, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it did. At the very least, we’d say it’s safe to assume the turn around from announcement to retailer will be much shorter than we’ve seen with the Samsung Galaxy S6, GS6 Edge, and HTC One M9. Our best guess is sometime between the day of announcement and May 1st, though we admit that’s nothing more than speculation on our part.

LG hasn’t exactly kept quiet about what to expect from the LG G4, with only a few details still being withheld, such as whether it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 or the 808 we’ve heard about in rumors. Still, a next day release would be one way for LG to make a pretty big splash on April 28th.

What do you think, if the LG G4 arrives at the end of the month, will you be picking one up? For more details on what to possibly expect, be sure to check out our rumor roundup.

LG g4 leather 2

LG will unveil the G4 for real next Tuesday April 28, and it will go on sale the very next day. However, if you live anywhere else but South Korea, don’t pencil it in your calendar.

Consumers in South Korea can reserve their device now and pick it up on April 29.

South Koreans will also get one other additional perk in that they will be eligible for a screen replacement for up to one year from their purchase date plus a free 64 GB micro SD card. The phone has to be purchased by May 31 though.
