LG chose the Snapdragon 808 for the G4 because of timing, not because of overheating issues

LG G4 hands on-39

The LG G4 has just been officially unveiled to the masses, boasting a super clear 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum Display, 3GB of RAM, and… a Snapdragon 808 processor. That’s right, LG opted against using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor in its new handset, though the reasoning behind that decision might not be what you’re thinking.

The Snapdragon 810 processor has gotten off to a very rough start since its announcement a few months ago. Reports of smartphones overheating due to the chip have been running rampant throughout the internet, and Samsung even decided against using the chip in the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets. So why did LG decide to use the 808 in the G4, rather than going with the (supposedly) bigger and better 810?

lg g4 first look aa (11 of 32)

Qualcomm’s head of marketing, Tim McDonough, said in an interview that LG’s decision to go with the 808 was made long before the hype began surrounding the 810. McDonough explains:

The decisions on which chipsets to put on which handsets come from over a year ago.

While McDonough says both chips are “very much cut from the same cloth”, the 810 boasts eight cores, and the 808 only has six. The 810 also has more ultra-HD video capabilities and has an Adreno 430 GPU, as opposed to the Adreno 418 GPU found in the 808.

According to CNET, McDonough says LG’s decision had a lot to do with cost, as well. The 810 would be available first, so it was a no-brainer that LG would include the SoC in the G Flex 2. The 808 took a little more time to make its way to market, which meant LG could choose between the two processors. Ultimately, the decision to go with the 808 in the G4 came down to manufacturing costs (the 808 is cheaper), and the fact that the G4 would be the first mobile device to launch with the chipset.

Check out these official LG G4 camera samples!

lg g4 first look aa (31 of 32)

While the LG G4 has quite a few improvements over its predecessor, probably the biggest standouts are the new more upscale (optional) leather back and the greatly improved shooter that jumps up from 13MP to 16MP and packs a f/1.8 aperture lens that could give the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge a real run for the money.

Focusing on the camera in particular, LG has worked hard to not only improve the camera hardware, but LG is also introducing several new software features including a powerful manual mode and much more. Until we get our hands on our review unit of the LG G4 and have more time with the device, it’s really too early for us to make any judgment calls when it comes how well the camera actually performs in day-to-day use, but in the meantime LG has now shared a number of official camera samples for you to sink your teeth into.

LG G4 availability – what we know so far

LG announced its new G4 flagship just hours ago, and we’ve already gone hands-on with the device. If you can’t tell by our first impressions video (attached above), this is a really nice smartphone. Many of you are probably wondering where you can get this beauty. Well, since it was just announced earlier today, not many carriers have confirmed exact availability dates quite yet, but many have come forward to say that they’ll eventually carry the device.

The LG G4 has a 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum Display with a 1440 x 2560 resolution and 538ppi. It boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, Adreno 418 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage and MicroSD expansion up to 128GB. It also has a 16MP rear-facing camera with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS 2.0, an 8MP front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, a removable 3000mAh battery and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Of course, we’ll update this post as we learn more details on the phone’s availability, but here’s what we know so far:

Hand-On with the All-New LG G4

LG-G4 is real

After months of speculation and leaks, the LG G4 is finally, officially upon us, and she’s a beauty. I don’t want to distract from the fine work of my colleague, Jared Peters, so hit up his article from earlier today for some in-depth analysis of the phone. However, in an effort to remind you of the highlights, the LG G4 brings the following to the table:

  • 5.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display (same as the G3)
  • Snapdragon 808 processor
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • 32 GB of internal storage, plus a micro SD slot
  • Removable 3,000 mAh battery (LG is now the only flagship manufacturer this year to offer a removable battery)
  • 16 MP rear camera with a class-leading f/1.8 lens
  • 8 MP front cameria w/ f/2.0 aperture
  • Android 5.1 Lollipop
  • 100 GB free Google Drive storage for a year
  • New rear cover materials and colors, including leather(!)

What it’s missing:

  • Wireless charging
  • QuickCharge technology
  • A screen as audaciously curved as the G Flex 2

Check out our own Robert Nazarian below with some hands-on first impressions from the launch event.

Mophie’s Juice Pack for LG G4 coming soon, adds an extra 3,450 mAh battery

lg-g4-mophie
The LG G4 already has a few possible advantages over the Galaxy S6 and other 2015 flagships, at least when it comes to battery life. The first advantage is the fact the G4 has a replaceable battery, allowing you to swap out dead ones for charged. Second, the LG G4 has a 3,000 mAh battery that reportedly will get a little better battery life than the smaller battery found in the GS6 — though we’ve yet to fully verify these claims just yet.

Still, want even more battery power? Mophie has just announced a new Juice Pack is on its way to the device, adding a 3,450 mAh battery that is said to add 15 hours of extra talk time, nine hours extra net usage, or 10 hours extra video playback.

Of course the Mophie Juice Pack also doubles as protective case for your device, giving it a dual purpose that could make the $99.99 price tag a little easier to swallow. You can pre-order the new Juice Pack from today, but it isn’t expected to ship until sometime in late June. Considering the LG G4 hasn’t shipped yet, though it is arriving in South Korea tomorrow, waiting for the Juice Pack to arrive shouldn’t be a problem.

LG Watch Urbane now available on Google Play

The LG Watch Urbane is now available at the Google Play store for $349.00.  The LG Watch Urbane is LG’s Android watch that is “sophisticated” with either a gold or silver face.  The watch also comes with an actual leather band that looks as good as the watch itself.  If you don’t like the band, LG designed the Urbane to accept standard watch bands which means if you want a metal band, and all you have to do is head over to Amazon.com and order a replacement that is more suitable to your liking.

The Urbane comes with Gorilla Glass 3, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of memory, Wi-Fi, and a water resistance rating of IP67.  As of right now, the Google Play store says the watch will ship on May 8.

Spec Showdown: LG G4 versus LG G3

g4_vs_g3

LG on Tuesday introduced the latest iteration of its flagship Android smartphone, announcing the G4. Slated to arrive in the coming weeks, the phone looks very much like its predecessors on the outside. But, on the inside, however, things are considerably different. Indeed, LG balances both revolution and evolution for this next-gen model and pushes forward with the specs.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how the 2015 model compares to the 2014 edition. Note that we’re not including every little detail, only those that are most relevant to most users.

LG’s G4 is now official, complete with leather back and sharpshooting camera

lg_g4_back_cover_varietyAfter all the teasing LG has been doing lately, they’ve finally taken the wraps off of the G4. There aren’t many surprises here, between the official videos that LG has put out and the numerous leaks we’ve seen over the past few weeks, but that doesn’t take away from what’s looking like a fantastic flagship for 2015.

The design of the device hasn’t changed much from the G3, which is either good or bad, depending on how much you liked last year’s model. This time around, LG is releasing the phone with several different leather-backed options, which LG says takes three months per back to make. Seems a little excessive for something that’s only a removable back, but hey, as long they’re high quality parts, no one should complain.

As far as specs go, everything lines up with what we’ve been hearing. The G4 sports a 5.5-inch QHD screen, just like the G3, but the panel is supposedly 11% more power efficient, 25% brighter, and with 20% more color accuracy. It’ll be interesting to see how the display fares next to Samsung’s acclaimed Galaxy S6.

Other hardware includes the Snapdragon 808 (pouring more fuel on the Snapdragon 810’s overheating controversy), 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, plus a removable 3,000 mAh battery and microSD card slot. No wireless charging here, but with the back being removable, LG will be likely offer some kind of solution if you’re willing to buy accessories for it.

The camera has been a bragging point for LG up to this point, and the G4 looks like it’ll give other smartphone cameras a run for their money. The 16 megapixel shooter has an f/1.8 lens and better image stabilization, plus a ton of new software tweaks for professionals and enthusiasts to get their photos exactly how they want. RAW capture and manual shutter speed and ISO settings were among the features LG wants to show off with the G4’s camera. Again, Samsung’s latest flagship offers the biggest competition to the G4, and with the S6 Edge sitting at the top of the heap for smartphone camera quality, LG will have to offer something extraordinary to be able to compete.

As for the rest of the software, you’ll find Android 5.1 with LG’s additional software on board, many of which we’ve already seen. LG claims they’ll only be shipping the G4 with Chrome installed, instead of Chrome and a built-in browser, and they’re bundling in 100 GB of free Google Drive space with the purchase of the device. Most of the native apps on the device also integrate with Drive, which is a very nice touch if you’re in Google’s ecosystem.

Last year, LG did moderately well thanks to Samsung’s slightly disappointing Galaxy S5. This year, Samsung came out swinging with the Galaxy S6, which has been repeatedly praised as one of the best devices Samsung has ever made. That’s going to make LG’s job much harder with the G4. Having a bigger screen and expandable storage should help, but I think it’s going to be a very competitive year for both companies moving forward.

Carriers announce G4 availability

LG g4 leather 2With the G4 finally being official, carriers are announcing vague availability for the device. HTC and Samsung managed to launch their flagship devices simultaneously on all major US carriers on April 10th this year, so LG will probably be able to pull off something similar.

So far, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon have announced plans to carry the device, although none of the carriers have mentioned exactly when we can expect to be able to purchase it. T-Mobile is running an early experience program, however, so if you sign up through T-Mobile you’re entered in a chance to win a G4 before its publicly released.

We’ll keep you updated as more carriers announce their intentions to carry the device. AT&T is almost guaranteed to follow, and I’d imagine we’ll hear something from US Cellular soon, too.
