LG’s Watch Urbane bucks the trend of hard-to-fix wearables

LG Watch Urbane in mid-teardown

Think that smartwatches are tough to fix by their very nature? LG is seemingly determined to prove otherwise. The repair-it-yourself team at iFixit has finished tearing down the Watch Urbane, and it turns out that this Android Wear timepiece is surprisingly easy to maintain. You’ll have to unstick the glued back, but it’s usually a cakewalk after that — there’s little stopping you from pulling out the motherboard or the battery. The biggest challenge is replacing the display, which is fused to the glass. No, you probably won’t need to pry apart your Urbane any time soon, but it’s good to know that the wearable won’t be reduced to a ritzy-looking paperweight if it breaks when you’re out of warranty.

Smartphone Camera Shootout: Samsung Galaxy S6 vs LG G4

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_LG_G4_Cameras_01_TA

Reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have been pretty positive with the camera being a standout feature. However, last week LG announced their newest flagship, the G4, and they feel they might have one-upped Samsung. The Galaxy S6 and Edge sport an industry first f/1.9 aperture, giving them tremendous results in low light. It hasn’t even been a month and now LG has trumped Samsung by giving the G4’s camera an aperture of f/1.8. It might not sound like much of a difference to you, but LG believes it is. On top of that, they threw in auto laser focus, and OIS 2.0, which gives you a 3rd axis for even better image stabilization.

Android users have been craving for smartphones that sport cameras that can get the job done, so it’s nice to see both LG and Samsung pushing the envelope here. Is there a clear winner? Did LG trump Samsung?

I have spent a decent amount of time with both the G4 and the Galaxy S6 Edge this past weekend capturing photos to see how each one fairs. I am not only looking for great photos, but I wanted to see how each device did with detail, so you will find cropped examples as well.

Before we begin, I should note that all photos were taken in Auto mode, so I did not tweak any controls whatsoever. This is how most people will capture photos. All photos came in at 5312 x 2988 or 16 MP

Let’s start with this baseball on my garage floor. I took both of these photos from about waist high. Below are the originals, followed by cropped versions of both photos (1350 x 759)

As you can see, the LG images are brighter, but the Galaxy S6 Edge’s images are more color accurate. I also think the Galaxy S6 Edge captured more detail on the garage floor in the cropped image. On the other hand, the writing on the ball is clearer on the cropped picture from the G4.

Next up is an image of a creek at dusk, and again, followed by cropped mages

Again, the G4’s image is a little brighter, but if you take a look at the cropped images, the Galaxy S6 Edge has more detail on the rocks.

Now we have a picture of a “No Outlet” sign after sunset when it’s just about dark.

Once again, the G4’s image is brighter. The sign, which is the focal point, isn’t all that much better though. Cropping an image like this seems futile at best, but it does give us some information. The G4 has a lot more noise, and the lights on the light posts are a little cleaner on the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Here are some more photos in which I didn’t do any crop tests. The ones with the clouds, especially the sunset, are hard to compare since they moved slightly from image to image. Note: The G4 used HDR to capture the first picture with the clouds. The last two images are closeups, not crops.

Galaxy_S6_Edge_vs_LG_G4_Photos_Shootout_08_Closeup_GS6Galaxy_S6_Edge_vs_LG_G4_Photos_Shootout_08_Closeup_G4

Conclusion

You can clearly see the f/1.8 aperture of the G4 captures more light than the f/1.9 aperture, but the Galaxy S6 seems to capture more detail. I’m not sure you can pick a clear winner because all photos are remarkable, but if you’re a photography enthusiast, the G4 might be the better pick since it offers the ability to capture Raw (DNG) images and there are more controls in Manual mode vs Samsung’s Pro mode, For example, you can adjust the shutter speed on the G4, but you can’t on the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. Even the ISO setting is limited to 800 on the Galaxy S6 and Edge, whereas the G4 allows you to dial it up to 2700. So if you know what you’re doing, you can definitely capture better photos on the G4, but t the average person will more than likely be ecstatic with the performance of either phone.

What do you think of the photos? Let me know in the comments.

LG adds Call App for Android Wear

unnamed (6)

LG has added a new Android Wear app to the Google Play Store, which brings you the ability to see your recent calls, favorite contacts, and the dial pad. You can make a call to anyone you want without even having to pull out your phone. The app pairs with your watch using bluetooth and will run in the background with your watch. The UI is fantastic as you can see in the gallery.

However, there’s a catch: the app is only available on the latest watch, the LG G Watch Urbane. Needless to say, restricting the app to the latest, most expensive device has left some people fairly steamed: the app has about 1.5 stars on the GP Store. If you have the Urbane, by all means download the app, but if you have an older model, you should probably just cross your fingers and hope LG comes around. Check out the gallery below to get a taste of what you’re probably missing.

The LG Call App will let you make calls from your Android Wear device, but only if you have the LG Watch Urbane

A feature that everyone that has been hankering for on Android Wear devices is the ability to dial phone numbers from the watch itself. Well, LG has just released a solution in the LG Call app, but there is a catch – it’s currently only for the LG Watch Urbane, LG’s recently released smartwatch. As a result, the app currently only has a rating of 1.5 (out of 5) on its Google Play Store page, and the negative comments aren’t just coming from people who don’t have LG smartwatches, the most prominent complaints appear to be coming from LG G Watch R and LG G Watch owners who are livid that LG wouldn’t include their devices in the initial release of their app.

As far as the actually operation of the app goes, you can either use it to easily dial recent or favourite numbers, or you can dial a new number via its on-screen dial. You can also activate it by simply saying “open call” to your watch, and works on smartphones that have Android 4.3 or higher. We’ll have to see if LG eventually includes more device compatibility – its other LG smartwatches seem like a no-brainer – but for the time being, only owners of the LG Watch Urbane will be able to benefit from this app. Hit the link below if you’re in this exclusive boat.

FDP 015: LG G4 with Special Guests!

AAFDP 015 YT ART

That’s right, we’ve changed the name of our podcast to just FDP. We saw that you guys like the hashtag #FDP and we wanted to keep it, too! And among other reasons, “Friday Debate” just didn’t make as much sense anymore. So, we are now the FDP – where P stands for Podcast.

This week, we have a really special episode with some very special friends. Josh was in NYC for the LG G4 launch event and the couple days were eventual, to say the least – the event itself was at the top of One World Trade Center with stunning views of Manhattan and this podcast was recorded ON A BOAT. A trek to a ship floating off the shores of the Hudson River eventually brought Josh and his guests to what would be the backdrop for this week’s FDP.

Josh is joined by Michael Fisher (@captain2phones) of Pocketnow, Florence Ion (@ohthatflo) of Greenbot, and Dom Esposito (@macmixing) of 9to5Google and YouTube.com/dom! They talk about Project Fi to warm up and then get into the LG G4 itself, with plenty of fun tangents along the way. And be forewarned, the environment does mean a lot of background noise including helicopters and a creaking boat. But it’s still a really fun listen so fire up your podcast app or head to YouTube to enjoy some bonus behind the scenes footage!

LG launches Watch Urbane-exclusive LG Call app to Google Play

lg watch urbane aa 9

LG has just released a new app to the Google Play Store that allows you to place calls on your phone from your watch. But unless you own an LG Watch Urbane, you won’t be able to use it. So far, the app is sitting at a measly 1.5/5 star rating on Google Play, and for good reason. Unfortunately, LG doesn’t make very clear the app’s exclusivity to the Watch Urbane in the app description, and that’s certainly upsetting a ton of G Watch and G Watch R owners.

LG Call for Android Wear

However, if you do happen to own a brand new Watch Urbane, you now have the option to initiate phone calls from your wrist. With the LG Call app, you’ll be able to scroll through your recent calls, favorite contacts, and take advantage of the interesting rotary phone UI LG has selected for this app.

It’s possible that LG is limiting the number of supported devices because the app is still in the testing process. But in any case, we’ll have to wait and see if the company decides to expand compatibility to more devices. If you’re interested, head to the Google Play link below.
