A month after officially unveiling its flagship smartphone offering for 2015 – the LG G4 – the company has officially launched it in India. The LG G4 Dual-SIM is priced in India at INR 51,500 (~ $808), and has already been listed for pre-order in the country. The device is already up for pre-order, and the company is bundling what it calls Smart Benefits that comprises of a metallic finish back cover worth $31, one-time screen replacement worth $102, and an extra battery with a charging cradle worth $55. The ones who pre-book the device will get a chance to meet celebrity actor Amitabh Bachchan and receive the phone from him.

LG G4 Pre-Booking Offer India

As opposed to the international variant, LG has launched a dual-SIM variant of the G4 (D818N) in India due to high demand of dual-SIM smartphones in the country, becoming the only high-end smartphone in the country to offer the feature. The LG G4 Dual-SIM features a 5.5-inch QHD Quantum IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with LG UX 4.0, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with Adreno 418 GPU, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, microSD card slot (that supports up to 2TB microSD cards), and a 3,000 mAh battery.

On the imaging front, the South Korean company is offering a 16-megapixel primary camera with a 1/2.6-inch sensor, phase-detection autofocus bundled with Laser Autofocus, three-axis OIS, and that can record videos in 4K resolution. There’s an 8-megapixel front-facing camera that can record 1080p videos. In terms of connectivity features, the device features two SIM card slots, 4G LTE connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi ac/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1 LE (APT-x), A-GPS with GLONASS, NFC, and a microUSB 2.0 port that can double up as HDMI SlimPort (4K).

The LG G4 competes with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S6, the HTC One M9+, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, and the Sony Xperia Z3 in the country. It is priced quite competitively, and if LG drops the price like it did with the LG G3 last year, it would be a great sell for consumers.

LG G4 gets dunked in 4-inches of water for two hours

lg-g4-submerged-in-water

The LG G4 has many features, but water and dust resistance is not one of those. YouTube user Harris Craycaft decided to put that to the test, submerging the device in 4-inches of water for a two hour period. Will it survive?

Normally when you throw a smartphone or really any device in four inches of water for two hours, they tend to, well, stop working. Will the LG G4 stand up to the test? Find out in the video below.

Best for 4G: Galaxy S6 v Huawei P8 v LG G4

Huawei-P8-vs-LG-G4-vs-Galaxy-S6-Edge-AA

I often get asked which handset has the best network performance and reliability and usually the answer is Samsung, as for many years now the company has had by far the fastest LTE speeds on mobile devices.

With the change in build from plastic to metal and glass on the Galaxy S6 however, the company was faced with having to redesign its network antennae, so is the performance as good as past Samsung devices? How does it compare to the plastic-clad LG G4 and the metal-built Huawei P8, which comes with Huawei’s own extensive knowledge of mobile networks.

Which of these has the most reliable network connection, including call success rate, antenna strength and 4G Speed Tests? Let’s find out:

N.B. All handsets were tested using the same network – EE, which supports speeds of up to 300Mbps in the London area – and at the exact same time. The results below are based on a sample of 52 tests in 11 different areas spanning a distance of 170 miles.

Network Switch Rate

Galaxy-S6-Edge-vs-Huawei-P8-14

One problem with most current LTE networks is that VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) isn’t supported in large parts of the network, meaning handsets need to switch down to a 3G connection when attempting to make a call while connected to an LTE connection. Often, the time taken to locate and switch to a 3G network can result in a dropped call; both, when making a call or receiving a call.

The purpose of this section was to test the handset’s ability to switch from LTE to 2G/3G and vice versa, while also determining which handset remained connected to the fastest network for longest. During our testing, we found the following:

  Galaxy S6 LG G4 Huawei P8
Average Time taken to switch to fastest network 1 minute 48 seconds 52 seconds 41 seconds
Number of dropped calls when connected to LTE 21 dropped calls 11 dropped calls 6 dropped calls
Time connected to fastest network 49 seconds 1 minute 3 seconds 2 minutes 9 seconds

The network switch rate on the Galaxy S6 is certainly surprising given that past Samsung devices – albeit they were made of plastic – would usually latch onto the best network. The LG G4 certainly performs well but Huawei’s network coverage shone through in testing, with the Huawei P8 switching the fastest and remaining connected to the best network for longest.

Antenna Strength

lg-g4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-quick-look-aa-2-of-14

This section tests how strong the antennae performance on each smartphone actually is. To test the antenna strength, we used the figures reported in the Settings > About Phone > Status screen. A signal rating of -60 dBm is recognised as near perfect while anything above -110 dBm is considered call-dropping quality.

Our testing shows that:

  Galaxy S6 LG G4 Huawei P8
Average antenna strength -91 dBm -74 dBm -62 dBm
Ratio of average connection (3G:LTE) 4:1 1:5 1:8
Occurrences of zero signal (out of 52 tests) 13 3 3

The Galaxy S6 again fails to excite here, with the handset often not even connecting to LTE. Considering that this particular unit may have been faulty, we decided to test with an alternate handset and found similar levels of performance: the second Galaxy S6 was on average 6 dBm better than the first handset and not enough to warrant the first unit as faulty.

The LG G4 again performs relatively well, with a relatively strong network antenna, but the Huawei P8 is again the best (and this time, by far).

LTE Speed Tests

Galaxy-S6-Speedtest-1

Now to the final section and probably the most interesting: superfast LTE speeds. This was a simple test to conduct; each handset was using the latest version of Ookla’s SpeedTest application and was connected to 4G.

Our testing found:

  Galaxy S6 LG G4 Huawei P8
Average speed test: download 50.03 Mbps 53.37 Mbps 58.31 Mbps
Average speed test: upload 15.69 Mbps 18.38 Mbps 20.04 Mbps
Fastest LTE speed recorded: 78.39 Mbps 88.46 Mbps 91.44 Mbps

The results were very surprising, given that the Ascend P7 was slower than both the LG G3 and the Galaxy S5. The G4 is better than the G3 thanks to the addition of Cat 6 support and the Huawei P8 is a marked improvement over the Ascend P7, with Huawei’s network knowledge really shining through thanks to the dual antenna system.

The Galaxy S6 tests showed that the handset is significantly slower than the Note 4 and Galaxy S5, despite the newer internal hardware and LTE Cat 6 support (which the Galaxy Note 4 also has). The Galaxy S6 also failed to latch onto 4G+ (Cat 6) – which offers downloads speeds of up to 300Mbps – and was instead limited to Cat 4, which offers a maximum download speed of 150Mbps.

Conclusion

Looking at all the tests and the various results, I think it’s safe to say that the Huawei P8 is the best handset for LTE, while the LG G4 comes second and the Galaxy S6 is significantly further back. Samsung’s adoption of metal and glass certainly worked for most parts of the handset but the network antenna seems to have suffered as a result of the switch, which could be expected given the problems others have had with metal builds.

With the G4, LG have made the antenna stronger than the G3 and the result is much better performance overall. The G4 is certainly impressive in holding onto a network connection and with Cat 6 support, the maximum download speeds have also vastly improved. The dual antenna system on the Huawei P8 clearly prevents any antenna-gate issues – where holding the handset the wrong way can affect your signal – and the handset can intelligently switch between the two antennae, depending upon which is the strongest.

Asus announces new ZenWatch 2 at Computex

While many of of us are asleep, or should be asleep in my case, there’s actually a pretty big and important conference going on over in Asia. Known as Computex, this is Asia’s largest tech exhibition, and where companies like Asus make various announcements. Hot off the heels of Google I/O, and the latest update to Android Wear, which was rolled out with the LG Watch Urbane, Asus has announced the successor to the ZenWatch.

Not too much has been announced about the Asus ZenWatch 2, however, we do know that there will be two different sizes, 45mm, and 49mm. Along with the two new sizes, Asus is adding three different body styles, and new watchbands, there will be up to 18 different combinations available for whatever style you are looking for. Asus has also partnered with Swarovski to bring a more extravagant look to the straps for the ZenWatch 2.

What makes the larger ZenWatch 2 more interesting is that Asus is stating that users will be able to use the 49mm version as a mobile power bank. Surely this will not be for any extended period of time, but could definitely help out in a pinch. Battery size has not been announced, so if you have a phone with a huge battery, you may be out of luck regardless.

Asus has also changed the charging mechanism on the ZenWatch 2 to allow for faster charging. We are only 6 months removed from the announcement of the original ZenWatch so we can only speculate the reasons behind why Asus got such a head start on the ZenWatch 2, to the point that it was announced today.

More details will be coming as the Computex conference progresses, so be sure to keep an eye out of the specs and fun stuff that can be expected today. Meanwhile, let us know what you think about the latest rendition of the ZenWatch from Asus.

WiFi from LG Watch Urbane hacked onto LG G Watch R

LG_Watch_Urbane_Main_Gold_And_Silver_TA

Owners of the LG G Watch R who are willing to do some hacking work on the device now have an option available to enable the WiFi chip on the device. User Tasssadar on the XDA site figured out how to get the needed drivers off an LG Watch Urbane, with the help of intersectRaven, in order to make this possible.

The files needed to make everything work have been put together as a flashable ZIP for G Watch R owners who are willing to give it a go. Currently the solution has only been tested on devices running the 5.1.1 Android update. Users will also need TWRP installed as a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader.

Tasssadar does note that this solution breaks over-the-air updates, so owners will have to be prepared to restore to a stock image when the next Android update rolls out if they want to get it OTA. In addition, although most people think LG did not enable WiFi on the G Watch R as a way to push buyers to the Watch Urbane, there is a possibility that some actual hardware issue exists and this could cause permanent hardware damage.

If you have a G Watch R and want to give this a try, just hit the source link below for links to the ZIP file and some kernels that will be needed.

No Android 5.1 in sight: Minor update to the LG G3 improves “phone usability and functionality”

LG was one of the quickest manufcaturers to update its flagship at the time, the LG G3, to Android 5.0 after its release, however since then, there’s been no hide nor hair of any update to the latest version, Android 5.1. Naturally, LG’s latest flagship, the LG G4, ships with Android 5.1, so LG’s other customers have been left in the dark wondering when it will be their turn. Which excited me greatly when I saw a 110MB software update being uploaded to my LG G3 yesterday, only to be let down when I realized it was only a minor update to the LG G3, citing improvements in “phone usability and functionality”.

Minor update to the LG G3This update increments the software version from V20f to V20i, but unfortunately the Android version has not changed from Android 5.0. The only difference that I have seen in this latest version is that a new launcher function has been added to allow you to add homescreen windows on the fly (by swiping inwards, a la some custom launchers) – if you’ve also got this update and can see any differences, feel free to drop us a line in the comments below. And the wait for Android 5.1 continues…

What do you think about this minor update to the LG G3? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

AT&T’s LG G4 will be available starting May 29th

LG G4 Variety of coloursWe’ve been waiting and waiting for all of the major carriers in the US to announce availability of LG’s G4, and AT&T is one of the last to make something official. It’s kind of a last minute announcement, but AT&T will begin selling the G4 starting on May 29th. Today is May 28th. Odd move, but hey, at the least the wait is over. Plus, AT&T customers should be able to buy the device ahead of Verizon customers.

The device will be available on AT&T Next for $0 down, starting at $21 per month on Next 24, $26.25 per month on Next 18, and $31.50 on Next 12. AT&T also mentioned that the device is available for $199 on a two-year contract, but you won’t have long to lock in that contract, since the carrier is dropping two-year contracts in June. The leather backed version of the G4 adds a few bucks to that pricing, and comes in at around $239 on contract.

LG is also offering an accessory bundle to anyone that buys the G4 before June 21st, and that includes a spare battery, battery charging cradle, and a 32 GB microSD card. They’re definitely capitalizing on the lack of removable battery + storage in Samsung’s S6, which makes the G4 a very, very compelling option. All you have to do to get the bonus accessories is register your G4 on time.

Anybody planning on buying a G4 on AT&T in the next few weeks?

Where to buy LG’s G4 in the UK

If we were to ask what your current smartphone is lacking above all, you’d probably cite a shortage of leather, right? OK, so maybe not, but with the launch of the LG G4 in the UK, a leather-backed handset is now well within your grasp. LG’s latest flagship, which is also available in vegetarian flavours with metallic effect rear shells, isn’t a huge evolution from last year’s G3. That said, it’s still crammed full of top-tier components, particularly in the display and camera departments, with excellent battery life to keep you tapping your way through those long days. Now, let’s say you’re interested, but aren’t sure of the best way to go about acquiring one. Well, then, let us walk you through your options.

O2 Carphone Warehouse Buymobiles Mobiles .co.uk
Cheapest contract (with upfront) £13.50 (£480) £25 on Voda (£140) £15 on EE (£370) £23.50 on O2 (£100)
Cheapest contract (no upfront) £33.50 £35 on Voda £40 on EE £32 on Voda
Pay-as-you-go £480
Unlocked (SIM-free) £520 £551

Typically when a new flagship handset launches, carriers are jostling for your business from day one. It doesn’t seem the UK’s big four have a great deal of faith in the LG G4’s success, however, since O2 is the only provider currently ranging the device. Three’s said it’ll offer the handset from tomorrow, but EE and Vodafone are yet to reveal their launch timelines. Carphone Warehouse was quick on the draw yesterday, and a couple of familiar online resellers now also have contract options available. It’s relatively slim pickings at the moment, though, so keep an eye on this page, where we’ll add pricing information for the other big carriers when it comes through.

True to form, giffgaff is so far the only MVNO openly committed to the LG G4, though it’s showing as “out of stock” online right now. When handsets do become available, though, you can expect to pay £22.62 per month with a £25 upfront payment, or £519 on pay-as-you-go. Surprisingly, not a great deal of unlocked handset merchants have the LG G4 in stock right now. Amazon is matching Carphone Warehouse’s price of £520, and Unlocked Mobiles will sell you a non-leather handset for £500. The best deal we can find currently is with Clove, however, which will kit you out with a grey or gold handset for £490, or a brown leather model for £510.

The device will be available off-contract for $549.99 or with Verizon Edge for $22.91 per month for 24 months. Big Red hasn’t given us the details on two-year contract pricing, but we’d imagine it will land on the carrier for around $199.99.

LG_GPad_X_8.3_Front_lores

Additionally, the brand new LG G Pad X8.3 will also be available in-store starting May 28th. The new tablet will be available for $299.99 off-contract or for $12.49 per month for 24 months on Verizon Edge. Purchasing the tablet with a two-year contract will cost $129.99. Specs for the G Pad X8.3 aren’t extremely impressive, though they’ll certainly suffice for many users out there. The tablet has an 8.3-inch Full HD IPS LCD display, a 1.5GHz octa-core processor, an 8MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 16GB of internal storage and microSD expansion up to 128GB. It also has a 4800mAh battery and runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

For a limited time, if you purchase an LG G4, you’ll be able to score the G Pad X8.3 for just $49.99 on-contract ($129.99 value). LG’s free battery and memory card promotion is also applied here, so be sure to take advantage of that deal if you’re interested in buying one of these devices.
