T-Mobile will start rolling out the Lollipop update for the LG G3 shortly

t-mobile-store

If you cast your mind back to April, you may remember that T-Mobile briefly started rolling out the long-awaited Lollipop update to all its carrier-branded variants of the LG G3 located in the United States. Sadly, the operator was forced to pull the upgrade for reasons unknown.

Earlier today, Desmond Smith, Senior Product Manager at T-Mobile, announced on his personal Twitter account that the Lollipop update (software version D8512oe) has received re-approval and should start rolling out again in the not-too-distant future.

The full changelog for the upgrade can be seen below:

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the mosttimely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

Be sure to check back as we’ll let you know as and when the update starts rolling out.

In our full color comparison, we told you that the leather back covers for the G4 feel as premium as (if not more than) a nice wallet or the leather backs that can be found on the Moto X (2nd Gen). While all of the covers feel great in the hand, the Red option definitely has the smoothest texture, and the others feature a rougher texture, almost akin to crocodile skin.

If you own a G4 and plan on swapping out the back covers at all, you might want to take advantage of this deal. Remember, orders need to be placed before June 30th! Head to the link below to order yours today.

AT&T LG G4 owners seeing a software update install without permission

LG_G4_From_NYC_02

Those who purchased the LG G4 from AT&T are noticing that a software update arrives, reboots, and installs on their phones. All of this is without owners engaging the update themselves. While that is not usually the case for any software update, AT&T seems to have no qualms about it.

The changelog on AT&T’s site merely states that the AT&T Address Book has been enhanced.

LG’s Disney-themed smartphone launches in Japan

LG Electronics announced a Disney-themed smartphone in Japan on Monday. This high-end smartphone will be sold exclusively by Japan’s most popular mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo. The LG smartphone has been dubbed the DM-01 and is the eighth Disney mobile device on the company’s lineup.

The LG DM-01 G comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, with a 13.2 MP rear camera and a 2.4 MP front shooter. The LG DM-01 G also comes with a removable 2920mAh battery.

lg-disney_1

It also comes with a custom designed Mickey Mouse smart-cover that has cutouts in the shape of Mickey’s head. This is  similar to LG’s Quick Circle cases found in its G series of smartphones. The “Wow” factor of the cover is the Swarovski crystals that are on the front which can be seen rising from Cinderella’s castle all the way up to Mickey’s head. The cover is available in multiple color options such as Pink, Blue and White.

lg-disney_2

The Disney phone runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop with LG’s custom UI on top and contains a collection of themes including “Frozen”, “Cinderella” and “Alice in Wonderland” for fans to choose from. It will also come bundled with LG’s trademarked features like the “Gesture Shot”, which allows users to take photos by curling one’s fingers into their palm while facing the camera.

There is no word on pricing or availability in other parts of the world yet, but it sure looks like fantasy filled treat for all Disney fans in Japan.

Would you buy this smartphone if it’s released in your country? or will you harass a Japanese friend to ship it to you? Let us know in the comment section below!

LG’s recent flagship device, the LG G4, is live across all US carriers and that means if you picked one up, or plan to soon, you should start considering accessories. The LG G4 is one of the few high-end devices on the market that kept the removable back a standard feature of the device. LG was also keen to take the opportunity to create a slew of back plate options for customers. While certain carrier models offer certain back cover options, it is easy enough to swap it out for something different. In an effort to help you get the best look for any occasion, LG is offering up a buy one get one free promo on all their leather backs now through June 30th.

LG G4

The LG page tells you to choose your carrier to see what backs are available, which doesn’t make a lot of sense as all five colors options are available for all carriers. In all truthfulness, they are available for any LG G4 since the external aspects of the device are the same everywhere. The leather backs aren’t cheap by any means as they retail for $69.99 each. Head over to the LG G4 leather back cover page and choose your two colors, add them to your cart and checkout. Before you spend the money you will see the second back cover is listed for free in your cart. The covers are still in a pre-order status at the moment, but they are slated to start shipping out after June 26th.

LG’s 4K monitor is first with AMD’s game-enhancing FreeSync

LG Electronics is helping gamers take their experience to a new level with the new LG 4K ULTRA HD monitor (model 27MU67), which will be available for the first time in the United States later this month. (PRNewsFoto/LG Electronics USA)

LG will be the first to sell a 4K monitor with AMD FreeSync technology, beating models from rival Samsung by a nose. The technology in its 27-inch 27MU67 is similar to NVIDIA’s G-Sync, matching monitor and GPU refresh rates to eliminate tearing, stutter and other gaming issues — as long as you have a compatible AMD graphics card or chip. Like Samsung, LG makes its own panels and it shows in the specs. The IPS screen can run at 40 to 60fps with 9.7 milliseconds of input lag, while being decent for color pros with a 99 percent Adobe gamut and 10-bit interpolated color. It’ll come calibrated out of the box later this month at select retailers for $599 — quite a drop in price from last year.

Mickey Demands Your Allegiance, Compels LG to Release Disney-Themed Phone

LG-Disney-Smartphone

In what is either the best news ever or the worst news ever, LG has revealed the latest in its line of “Disney Mobile” phones, available exclusively in Japan. The phone, dubbed the “DM-01G,” because Disney Consumer Products clearly had no input on nomenclature, is the eighth Disney-branded phone sold through Japanese carrier NTT Docomo, Inc.

So here’s the thing: I refuse to say “DM-01G” throughout this article when referencing the phone, so my very Disney upbringing (I grew up next to Anaheim – season passes, yo) is giving me carte blanche to rename the phone for the purposes of conversation. Therefore, I give you the following potential nicknames, which I will use for the remainder of the article, and I leave you to vote on the best one in the comments, or better yet, add your own:

  • LG Rescue Ranger™
  • LG Pixie Hollow™
  • LG We’re Tired of Princess Marketing™
  • LG Frozen 2™
  • LG DisFlex 8™
  • LG WTF

The We’re Tired of Princess Marketing™ sports some solid specs, and it doesn’t quite line up as a repurposed version of an existing LG phone, like the Nexus 5 to the G2. Spec-wise, it’s reasonably close to a G3, but not quite on the money. Pixie Hollow™ has a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display powered by a Snapdragon 801 processor. Users will also enjoy a 13.2 MP rear camera, a 2.4 MP front shooter, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 2,920 detachable battery, all coming in at a reasonably svelte 149 grams.

But here’s where things get interesting. The phone, which even has a Mickey Mouse-shaped Home button, comes with a Mickey ears cutout cover through which some pretty rad-looking notifications come up. Admittedly, I’m torn on whether this is awesome or horrifying.

LG-Disney_Smartphone3

And if that’s not enough, your Rescue Ranger™ also comes with a Swarovski cover wherein crystals represent our dreams that will come true if we only but wish.

DisFlex 8™ runs on LG’s Android UI featuring custom themes based on popular Disney franchises, like FrozenCinderella (evidently the live-action one from this year, not the 50s classic), and Alice in Wonderland. Would the WTF™ be superior if it offered skins for The Fox and the HoundThe Black Cauldron, and Song of the South? Objectively, yes, but that’s OK.

LG-Disney-Smartphone2

Frozen 2™ comes in blue, white, and pink. A launch date has not yet been announced.

If this were available outside of Japan, would you be all in?

All hail Burbank.

LG releases a Disney Mobile smartphone for Japan with a Mickey Mouse Swarovski cover

lg-disney_1

If you’re a resident of Japan and have access to NTT DoCoMo in your area, you may soon be able to get your hands on a new high-end Disney-themed Android handset from LG. Dubbed the LG DM-01G, the new smartphone is the eighth handset in the company’s Disney Mobile lineup that was just launched in Japan earlier today.

As you can tell from the photo above, the new LG smartphone features a Mickey Mouse smart cover, similar to the Quick Circle cases we’ve seen for the G series of smartphones. The cutouts are in the shape of Mickey’s head, and show you quick glances of useful information without having to open the cover. The front cover also includes Swarovski crystals rising up from Cinderella’s castle that are sure to entice Disney fans. The covers are available in multiple color options, including Blue, Pink and White.

lg-disney_2

On the spec front, the LG DM-01G comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and a removable 2920mAh battery. The handset also runs LG’s custom UI atop Android 5.0 Lollipop, and features a number of Disney themes for fans of The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Frozen.

As of right now, the handset looks to be exclusive to Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo, though not much information has been given about the device’s availability.

The LG G4 receives a great repairability score from iFixit

iFixit has long been tearing apart our beloved devices to reveal how manufacturers thought up to puzzle-piece together every feature. In the end, the device is given a repairability score out of 10 (10 being the easiest to take apart and replace components). Their most recent teardown was for the LG G4, which scored an impressive 8 out of 10!

How did LG manage this? For one, the back cover and battery are easily removable without any tools, a capability that has been disappearing from modern devices. From there, they merely used a Phillips #0 screwdriver and a little prying to get access to the motherboard:

GnoS5lSqk5Daw41B
DWUtuHlvcy2PCDXD
oMITcLm2ivCLNGbJ

And once iFixit got down to the nitty-gritty (and took some really cool X-ray shots of tiny component mechanics!), they were fortunate to find that “Many components are modular and can be replaced independently.”  Be sure to hit up the source link below for more images and details.

To compare, the Samsung Galaxy S6 received a mediocre repairability score of 4 out of 10 and the HTC M9 barely made it out alive with a score of 2 out of 10. So there you go. If something breaks on your shiny new G4, you have a reason not to freak out so much.  Seriously, calm down.
