LG hexagonal battery aims to further wearable battery life
By the way LG continues to pump out smartwatches (three models within a year), it can be said that they are highly invested in the wearable movement. The news we’ve received today backs that up, as we get a glimpse on the LG’s R&D effort to make the most out of smartwatch battery capacity.
As reported on Korean tech news site, etnews, LG Chem has developed a coin-sized Hexagon Battery, intended to most efficiently utilize the space within circular smartwatches.
It is said that the shape and degree of freedom in the hexagonal design can increase battery capacity up to 25% (estimated at 4 more hours of use). LG Chem refers to the battery assembling technology as ‘Free Form Battery’. It uses a ‘Stack & Folding’ technique that allows it to be constructed in any shape or form.
It’s great to see someone recognizing that slapping on a square battery on a circular smartwatch isn’t the best solution, especially when battery life in smartwatches hasn’t been anything to brag about. LG Chem plans to have the Hexagon Battery in mass-production by the end of the year.

LG hexagonal batteries improve smartwatch battery life

Battery resarchers may be focusing on innovative new materials and flexible designs, but research in this field is also opening up opportunities for batteries in new weird and wonderful shapes. LG Chem has just announced a new hexagonal battery design that could have a lot to offer the growing wearables market.
The hexagonal battery makes us of LG Chem’s patented “Stack & Folding” method. This technology injects electrolytes after stacking anode material, separation film, and cathode material layer by layer. This results in greater freedom in design, energy density, and more stable performance than the commonplace Winding method.
LG is the first to announce such a shaped battery and is planning to have the battery enter mass production before the end of 2015.
“A reason why we are mass-producing Hexagon Batteries are due to increased recent demands for circular design. We have worked together with global IT companies on developing battery technologies for Smart Watches.” – LG Chem
Clearly, a hexagonal design can make a much more efficient use of the space inside a circular smartwatch design than a square battery. LG expects that this superior use of space could increase battery capacity by up to 25 percent, which could result in up to 4 hours more screen on-time with your typical smartwatch. Although not every wearable product will find use for this battery shape, smartwatches are mostly beginning to confirm to more traditional circular designs.
The company is also working on other battery shapes for different products, including L-shape and ‘doughnut’ batteries with a hole in the middle. In the past, the company has also shown off its curved and wire battery prototypes.
Gartner research predicts that smartwatches will make up 40 percent of the watch market by 2016 and that over 200 million smartwatches will have shipped by 2020. LG is setting itself up to power a good portion of these devices over the coming years.

Nexus 5 (2015) and Android M to be released together

Google gave us a preview of the yet-to-be released next version of Android, Android M (6.0) at the 2015 Google I/O event. This sparked the big question of how will the next version of Android be released to the world. According to recent rumors, Google is planning on releasing its next OS alongside a new Nexus device, known to be at this point the Nexus 5 2015, codenamed “LG Angler”. The new device is hypothesized to be released by the end of this year, alongside a Nexus tablet that Huawei will most likely be in charge of making. The specs of the upcoming Nexus 5 2015 are still to-be-annouced, however users do have high expectations which will force Google and LG to release a device with the latest specs and tech available in the mobile market. We definitely expect to see a Full HD resolution touchscreen (5-inch minimum) with a possibility of a Quad HD panel as well. The new Nexus device will certainly feature a fingerprint sensor to take advantage of Android M’s new native fingerprint identification support. In terms of internal specs, the new Nexus will most likely come with the snapdragon 810 or 808, 3GB of RAM and come with 32GB, 64GB or 128 GB of internal storage options. In addition, wireless charging and fast charging should be included in the package, and most certainly, a USB Type C port. Finally, according to a person close with the engineering team at Google said that the new Nexus will have a major design improvement with a more durable body made up of a specific type of strong carbon fiber.
Another important question to ask at this moment is whether the new Nexus 5 2015 or so-called “LG Angler” will feature a built-in non-removable battery or not. Having a removable battery does offer a great advantage as batteries do wear out and having the option of removing the battery yourself and replacing with a new one is always preferable.

Galaxy S6 takes first place in real world speed test, beating out LG’s G4 and the iPhone 6
A new massive benchmark from Tom’s Guide has put six of the best performing smartphones on the market against each other to see which phone came out on top in a variety of situations. The tests measured everything from real-life performance and tasks you’d typically do on your smartphone every day, to gaming and other benchmarks. The test measured the Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4, HTC One M9, Google Nexus 6, Asus Zenfone 2, and Apple iPhone 6, so there’s a very wide variety of hardware here.
What’s definitely going to be great news for Samsung, their Galaxy S6 finished in 1st place a vast majority of the benchmarks, including PDF loading times, gaming performance, WiFi speed, and a handful of benchmarks. This can probably be attributed to Samsung’s own zippy Exynos processor, their very fast memory modules, and the insanely fast flash storage they opted to use in the S6. Surprisingly, though, the LG G4 beats out the S6 in camera opening time. Considering how much Samsung mentioned the quick camera shortcut on the home button, you’d think that would have scored better in a benchmark. But hey. props to LG for pulling that off.
The G4 scored 1st in camera opening time, as well as a Basemark OSII Memory test. Interestingly, the G4 pretty typically beat out the Snapdragon 810 powered HTC One M9. Considering the G4 has a higher resolution and only a Snapdragon 808 processor, this is almost irrefutable proof that the 810 has some problems. The only benchmark that the M9 came out ahead in was a 3dMark benchmark.
Another note worth mentioning is how poorly the Nexus 6 runs compared to other devices. It held up fairly well in benchmarks, but in real world tests, it was pretty consistently dead last, beaten by the Zenfone 2 and HTC’s M9. Considering Nexus phone are supposed to run very fast, completely stock versions of Android, that’s more than a little disappointing.

Treat yourself with an unlocked LG G4 from eBay for $499
An unlocked European version of the LG G4 is selling on eBay for $499. This deal applies to the metallic grey, white, and gold colours of the device. There are only limited quantities available, so if you want to pick one up, you’ll need to act fast.
The European variant is compatible with many LTE networks, supporting a variety of bands–1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17, 20 and 28. That said, you should have no problem using this device on networks like AT&T or T-Mobile.
As a quick refresher, the LG G4 is equipped with a 5.5-inch QHD panel, a Snapdragon 808 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera (and boy, does it take good photos), and an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter. Powering this hefty equipment is a massive 3,000 mAh battery. Consumers who pick up this device can expect it to be running the latest version of Android Lollipop–5.1.1 atop of LG’s own custom skin.
Anyone picking up the LG G4 at such a low price point?

Deal: LG G4 only $499.99 from eBay!

Looking for a new phone? The LG G4 is currently being discounted to $499.99 with free shipping on eBay. This price proves to be one hell of a deal, considering the device is relatively new to the market.
This happens to be the European H815 LG G4, but you can rest assured it will work nicely with the two main US carriers. It supports the following bands:
- 2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
- 3G: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
- 4G: LTE 700 / 800 / 850 / 900 / 1700 (AWS) / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 (Bands, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17, 20, 28)
In short: this version of the LG G4 does support HSPA and LTE bands in both AT&T and T-Mobile networks.

The real concern here is that the phone is being discounted so quickly. What is going on with LG’s flagship smartphone? We are not seeing any Samsung Galaxy S6 discounts, that’s for sure. It’s clear this is because Sammy’s device still has very high demand. Meanwhile, LG is struggling to sell many units, forcing the company’s Q2 forecasts to be lowered.
It doesn’t really matter how amazing a smartphone is (read our LG G4 review to learn all about this device), or how many Guinness world records it breaks, marketing and popularity keep most manufacturers in the shadows. It seems even big players like LG are affected by this phenomena, which is quite sad for us Android fans who are all for variety and availability of options.

Regardless, this deal is one you should definitely consider. This Android handset is blessed by a gorgeous 5.5-inch QHD display, Android 5.1, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and a pair of cameras that are among the best in their category. It’s one hell of a smartphone.
If you are looking for a great phone and don’t want to spend an extra $100, at least consider this deal. And you should hurry if you are interested, as we don’t know how long this offer will last. Are any of you signing up?

LG launches the LG Band Play with a focus on multimedia
LG posted to their Korean newsroom information about the LG Band Play. This mid–range device wants to be a multimedia powerhouse without the power.
The LG Band Play runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The Band Play also packs 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage (expandable via microSD), and a 5 inch screen with a 720p resolution (720 x 1280). All of this is powered by a removable 2,300 mAh battery.
The specs clearly aren’t the thing that makes this device interesting. We mentioned that it is geared towards multimedia. You might be wondering “How do you achieve that with those lackluster screen specs?”. I know I sure was when I first heard of this device.
The magic is hidden in the sound system. LG boasts a 1W high powered speaker with enhanced bass which is supposed to deliver loud, rich sound. This was also highlighted as a key feature of the LG G3. Not only are the speakers supposed to be top notch, LG also is shipping the Band Play with a pair of premium QuadBeat 3s. The earbuds that you can see this nice lady wearing.
The Band Play will be running Android 5.1 out of the box. In addition to LG’s rendition of Android 5.1, the Band Play will also have a focus mode. This focus mode is designed to make sure that you stay productive. To achieve this, your phone will be silenced, cellular connection and Wi-Fi will be shut off, and any inbound calls will be automatically declined with a rejection message.
On top of limiting distractions, your LG Band Play will also play music similar to therapy music that will help you stay focused. To me, this sounds more production focused then play focused which is in the name. I personally think it should have been called the “LG Band Work”, but maybe that is just me.
The price is set at 394,800 KRW or about 355 USD, and will be available in South Korea in two colors, black and white. There is no hints to an international launch as of right now.

LG touting 2 Gbps speed possibility on network upgrade
LG’s wireless carrier, LG U+, has announced plans to deploy their new GIGA multi pass technology which can theoretically deliver speeds in excess of 1.17 Gbps by combining Wi-Fi with LTE. That move will be followed later in the year with plans to double the speed to more than 2 Gbps.
To give some context, at 2 Gbps a user could download a typical UHD movie, running around 18 Gb in size, in about 1 minute and 12 seconds. A normal HD movie that is 1.4 GB in size could be delivered in only six seconds while 50 songs could be downloaded in only about 1 second.
The key to this expansion in available speeds is the result of developments in several technologies, like large capacity IP packet exchange equipment. LG worked with companies like UBIQUOSS to develop a switch that could handle the large packets and deliver around 3,000 HD movies simultaneously on the network. Other technology includes vRAN to help with base station traffic management and other virtualization technology.
