Verizon-branded LG G Vista now receiving the Android 5.1 update

lg_g_vista_verizon_front_back_view

Verizon has finally started rolling out the long-awaited Android 5.1.1 update to the LG G Vista. In addition to the latest build of the operating system, this upgrade also carries a much-needed patch for the Stagefright security exploit.

All the changes you’d expect to find in the Lollipop software are bundled into this upgrade, including support for multiple accounts, improved notifications, stronger 256-bit encryption, a smoother multitasking experience personal unlocking and Material Design.

If you live in the United States and have not yet received the OTA update, you can head into “Settings,” then “About Device,” and select “Check for Updates” to manually scan for the upgrade.

AT&T now rolling out Stagefright patch for the LG G4

LG_G4_From_NYC_02

Hot on the heels of T-Mobile, AT&T has now started rolling out a software update to all its carrier-branded variants of the LG G4 located in the United States. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring any new features to the handset, but it does transport a patch for the open-source operating system’s Stagefright vulnerability.

As is the norm, the update is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your device to hit your unit, you could always search for the upgrade manually. To do so, open the Settings app, scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”, hit “System Updates”, then select “Check for updates”.

LG trademarks “G4 Note”. New flagship incoming?

We know for a while that there will be another LG flagship phone this year. LG has confirmed as much. We’re expecting another LG flagship in the second half of 2015 and with only 3 months left, we’re running out of time. But we may be getting some indication of LG’s plans based on a trademark filing uncovered from the USPTO, the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

g4 note filing

We haven’t seen a ton of leaks of the G4 Note so far, one being back in March from XDA Developers. According to the leak, the G4 Note will feature a stylus that comes out of the top, unlike the Galaxy Note line which has theirs placed in the bottom of the phone. But can LG make something that beats Samsung at their own game? Part of the strength of the Note series is the stylus and from the leaks, the G4 Note’s appears to be really weak. Can we expect the same functionality from the Wacom Stylus, known as the S-Pen? The S-Pen and it’s software have had a nice evolution since it’s debut years ago. It makes your takes more convenient to complete. Can LG hope to match that?

g4 note stylus

We will see. A stylus, removable back, removable battery and Micro SD card slot are going to be very attractive to previous Note owners who are disappointed in the Note 5’s redesign and looking to upgrade.

AT&T rolling out Stagefright patch for LG G4

lg-g4-color-comparison-aa-9-of-11

Still worried about the Stagefright vulnerability that could grant attackers control over your device with a simple MMS message? This issue left 95% of all Android users susceptible to attacks, but carriers and manufacturers have been quick to patch it up. It’s taking some companies more time than others, though.

Life is finally good again fore LG G4 users on AT&T. The carrier has started pushing out the Stagefright patch, taking many of you back to digital safety. It comes in the form of an OTA software update and seems to feature no other extra improvements.

lg g4 review aa (24 of 34)

All you need is enough battery life to go through the process and a stable WiFi connection for downloading the data. Got that set up? Simply wait for the upgrade notification to show up. You can also go ahead and check for updates in the settings, just in case the device is taking a little longer than it should. Do keep in mind these updates tend to roll out periodically, though, so try not to smash your screen.

Once all is said and done, you should be left with Android 5.1 Lollipop on software version H81010l. The file is 46.7 MB, so make sure you have enough space too. Enjoy your peace of mind!

Security, sound, and video. That’s the focus for a software update T-Mobile is pushing to its LG G4.

Throughout August, devices from a multitude of companies have received software updates to patch the Stagefright vulnerability. T-Mobile is taking its turn today in pushing the security update to its LG G4.

The carrier is also adjusting sound settings by separating ringtone and notification options. Finally, T-Mobile is allowing users to record video in slow motion.

The new build, which is labeled H81110n, is sized at 353MB and should reach devices during the week.

LG to display smart home products at IFA 2015, including retrofit device

lg_smartthinq_sensor

LG has announced they plan to showcase some of their latest smart home technology at IFA 2015. Headlining the devices will be the LG SmartThinQ Sensor which can be used to retrofit any normal home appliance to become a pseudo-smart appliance. LG also indicated their new devices will be compatible with the AllJoyn open platform for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

The SmartThinQ Sensor is a small, circular device that users can attached to any existing home appliance. The device includes a variety of sensors that can detect things like vibration or temperature. Using that information, like when a normal washing machine has stopped vibrating indicating it has ended its cycle, the SmartThinQ Sensor will then communicate this to a user’s smartphone to let them know the cycle is done.

LG says the combination of the SmartThinQ Sensor and the SmartThinQ app will allow users to control a variety of appliances and even systems like their air conditioning remotely.

In a more traditional smart home vein, LG will also unveil their Smart Lightwave Oven and Smart Air Conditioner. These devices will be AllJoyn compatible. Unlike traditional devices that use the SmartThinQ Sensor to provide feedback based on physical conditions, these smart appliances from LG will be more capable in providing users with control and information remotely beyond simple notifications.

LG Electronics Home Appliance and Air Solution Company president and CEO Jo Seong-jin says,

“Adoption of smart home appliances has been slow because of the perception that the technology is not easily accessible. LG is committed to continuing its leadership in the smart home market with innovations such as LG SmartThingQ, which provides real-life benefits and offers new lifestyle conveniences through technology that is easy to use.”

Would you be interested in retrofitting your traditional appliances to add some smart home features?

LG reveals the Watch Urbane Luxe with 23-karat gold and a $1,200 price tag

lg-watch-urbane-luxe-officialLG has announced a 23-karat gold version of the Watch Urbane in a fairly limited capacity, called the Watch Urbane Luxe. The watch stands up to some other premium wristwatches and includes an alligator leather strap and a hefty $1,200 price tag.

The watch is being produced in collaboration with REEDS Jewelers, and a supply of 500 watches will be up for pre-order on REEDS’ website. They’ll be available to purchase in retail stores in October.

LG WATCH URBANE LUXE, AN EXQUISITE SMARTWATCH

Limited Edition Device from LG is More Jewelry Than Wearable

SEOUL, Aug. 31, 2015 ― In collaboration with U.S. retail jewelry company REEDS Jewelers, LG Electronics (LG) will introduce a premium limited edition smartwatch, LG Watch Urbane Luxe. This luxurious wearable was designed with a specific wearer in mind and is adorned in 23-karat gold and gorgeous alligator leather strap set in an exclusive piano-gloss lacquer case. Available starting at the end of October, the LG Watch Urbane Luxe will retail for approximately USD 1,200.

The LG Watch Urbane Luxe will sport a deployment clasp for a fitted, elegant look that isn’t bulky. Invented by Louis Cartier in 1910, the use of a deployment clasp makes this timepiece even more exclusive and unique. The alligator band itself is handcrafted at the highest level of craftsmanship, undergoing 50 separate steps in its creation, handled lovingly by 30 experienced leatherworkers. The 23-karat gold used in the LG Watch Urbane Luxe is stronger and harder than the 24-karat gold used in jewelry and heavier than the 18-karat gold used in traditional luxury watches.

“Wearable devices shouldn’t be thought of as an extension of one’s smartphone but an extension of oneself,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “This blending of craftsmanship and technology is a natural evolution of the smartwatch, which is becoming more of a lifestyle accessory than a piece of hardware. We think this is a good direction for wearables and we want to encourage this transformation.”

Each of the 500 limited edition watches will be engraved with its own serial number for authenticity and available initially in the USA for pre-order at http://www.REEDS.com later this month or by visiting any REEDS Jewelers location. Visitors to IFA 2015 can see this beautiful work of art for themselves along with other mobile devices from LG in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin from September 4-9.

LG wants to bring your dumb appliances into the internet of things

Fresh off the announcement of their truly ridiculous $1,200 LG Urbane Luxe smartwatch, LG is announcing something much more useful. At IFA 2015, LG has taken the lid off their new sensors that aim to bring your dumb appliances (devices without a wifi connection) into the future and connect them to the internet of things.

Currently your device functions on its own and does it’s thing. With these sensors, you can monitor things like temperature and vibration to sense changes in operation. Dryer stopped vibrating? Time to grab your clothes and start folding. The devices will use AllJoyn, a system by which devices can communicate information to other devices around them. This may be something as simple as a push notification to your phone about that laundry we mentioned or setting up a program to run on multiple ovens and cooktops to automate the cooking of your dinner to have it done at the exact time you want it.

LG will also raise the curtain on the Smart Lightwave Oven and Smart Air Conditioner which have the same AllJoyn connectivity. The Smart Lightwave Oven can alert you to when your food is done and the Smart Air Conditioner can do it one better by letting you know when you have to replace your air filter! Pretty cool stuff.

What do you think? Do we need a new wave of connected appliances or is this just innovation for innovation’s sake? Will this catch on or will it be go the way of consumer 3D TVs? Let us know in the comments where you see this technology going.

AT&T adds new LG G Pad X to the lineup with DirecTV app in-tow

We’ve been wondering just how in-depth AT&T was going to incorporate DirecTV into their services. After offering some pretty awesome bundle deals after the acquisition, AT&T is up to it again.

Today, AT&T has announced the LG G Pad X 10.1 tablet that will be coming to your nearby AT&T location starting September 4th (this Friday). Pre-bundled on the G Pad X 10.1 is the DirecTV application which will allow you to start watching your favorite TV shows before you even have service set up at your home.

The device will run you $249.99 with a two-year contract, or $17.50 a month for 20 months with AT&T’s Tablet Installment Plan. The G Pad X 10.1 is sporting a 2.26GHz Quad Core processor with 2GB of RAM. As well as a 7400mAh battery, 32GB of on board storage with a MicroSD card slot with support of up to 128GB. The G Pad X 10,1 will also be running Android 5.1.1 out of the box, but there was no mention of whether this device will be updated to Android Marshmallow.

As the first tablet to offer the DIRECTV app, the LG G Pad X 10.1 is a game-changer for entertainment,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Device Marketing and Developer Services, AT&T. “With the G Pad X 10.1 you can walk out of an AT&T store watching your favorite shows on DIRECTV, before the service is even installed in your home. Combining this with a high speed processor, Full HD screen, and the nation’s most reliable 4G LTE network, the G Pad X 10.1 is a comprehensive mobile entertainment system at an affordable price.

This is probably only the first of many devices to have the DirecTV app pre-loaded onto it, so we can only wait and see what AT&T has up their sleeve next. Let us know what you think about this new device, and the fact that the DirecTV app is pre-loaded on it in the comments below.
