Nexus 5X preorders will go live right after Google’s announcement, starts at $379.99
We’ve heard plenty of information about the bigger of the two Nexus phones Google will be unveiling this week, but the smaller Nexus 5X hasn’t been talked about quite as much. We already know what kind of hardware to expect, but up until this point, we haven’t heard anything about pricing or availability, which are two pretty big details.
Well, it turns out Google should be opening up preorders for the Nexus 5X right after their announcement this Tuesday. That doesn’t mean the device will necessarily start shipping tomorrow, but it shouldn’t be too much longer after that before you can get one in your hands. Pricing looks pretty wallet friendly, too, with a price tag of just $379.99 for what will likely be the 16 GB version. It’s not the cheapest Nexus ever, but it’s a far cry from the industry standard $649 Nexus 6 last year.
Google is skipping the carriers this time around, so you’ll only be able to order one through Google’s official store. Considering how poorly carrier Nexus launches tend to go, this makes plenty of sense.
Anybody planning on preordering the Nexus 5X tomorrow?

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P to be sold online only, rumor says
We’re only a day way from getting the official unveiling of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, and so far we’ve seen just about everything there is to know about the two devices. However, new information is saying that they’ll be sold online only, and won’t be available in carrier stores like prior models have.
Android Police reports that this change is because Google is seriously trying to push its Google Store as the place to buy Nexus products in addition to all of the other goodies the store offers.
There’s no telling if this will affect the availability of other online retailers, such as Amazon. If so, the devices will no doubt end up on there anyway by way of third-party sellers.
This would be a great move from Google, allowing consumers to get away from the carriers and selling the devices unlocked. However, it’s also a downer for those that like to see the physical device before purchasing. That said, if Google were to sell its Nexus devices exclusively through the Google Store, it’d be nice to see some brick-and-mortar outlets pop up around the world.
We’re only a day out from Google’s event in San Francisco, so we’ll no doubt hear all the official details then.
Keep in mind that we’ve only seen details on the two Nexus devices. Google’s rumored to unveil some other things at the event, so there’s still some awesome things to look forward to tomorrow.
Anyone getting excited?

New Nexus phones surface at FCC with clues to features, carrier support
Over the weekend Google’s new Nexus devices surfaced in the FCC database just ahead of their anticipated launch announcement tomorrow. Both the LG manufactured Nexus 5X and the Huawei manufactured Nexus 6P have passed through their FCC certification. One big piece of information that can be gleaned from the information is that the devices have support for all wireless bands, both CDMA and GSM, meaning they should work on any of the major U.S. carriers including Verizon.
Along with the versions of the devices that appear to be headed for the U.S. market, the FCC also approved international versions of each device. For the Nexus 5X, it appears the battery will not be removable. On the international model, it looks like LG may have at least tested wireless charging as well, so it may be possible the Nexus 5X will support that feature.
The Nexus 6P may have a little surprise as well as there are some references to micro SD card slots in the FCC materials. It is not not clear whether the actual device available to consumers will have a micro SD slot so users can upgrade their own memory, but Huawei and Google appear to have at least considered this option.

LG’s lightweight Gram laptops arrive in the US
LG’s laptops are a common sight around the world, but you wouldn’t know it in the US when the company hasn’t officially brought its portables to the country. Well, that’s about to change: the Korean tech giant has announced that it will sell 13- and 14-inch versions of its ultralight Gram laptops in the US through both Amazon and Microsoft Stores. They’re still running 5th-generation Core processors, but they’re otherwise no slouches — they earn their name through an extremely light 980g (2.16lbs) body that makes many smaller laptops seem portly by comparison. You’ll also get a respectable 1080p display and perks like HDMI video output and a microSD card slot.
The prices are certainly competitive, beginning at $899 for a 13-inch version with a Core i5 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. Move to the 14-inch model and you’ll drop $999 on a base version with similar specs, or $1,399 for one with a Core i7 processor and a 256GB SSD. With that said, you may want to try one first-hand first, or check reviews from other regions — The Verge notes that the construction is “flimsy” next to a MacBook Air, and it doesn’t last nearly as long on battery. Still, it’s good to have a viable new choice in Ultrabooks in the States, especially when it’s from a familiar name.

Nexus 5X (LG-H790) passes through the FCC

The new Nexus phones are almost upon us and they certainly haven’t been the best kept secret around. If you want to know some of the last few details about the LG Nexus 5X, the smartphone has recently been spotted passing through the Federal Communications Commissions for certification.
The listing gives us the model number LG-H790, which looks to be the unlocked version of the Nexus 5X for the US market. A LG-H791 model, presumably the international version, has also been spotted. The FCC listing contains some information about the handset’s radio compatibility, stating that GSM 850/1900, W-CDMA 2/4/5, CDMA 0/1/10, and LTE Bands 2/4/5/7/12/13/17/25/26/41 are all supported.
The LG-H791 drops support for LTE bands 12, 13, and 25, but the rest of the frequencies remain intact. Both handsets will support Category 6 LTE speeds and 2 band carrier aggregation. Sources suggest that the phone will be fully compatible with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint networks, presumably along with Google’s own Fi network as well.

The FCC listing is light on other details and specifications, but does also confirm that handset’s size at 5.2 inches. The listing gives dimensions of 146.9 x72.5mm with a diagonal display size of 133mm, which works out to 5.24 inches.

Leaked presentation reveals the Nexus 6P will feature a big 3450mAh battery

The latest Nexus devices have been leaking like crazy as of late. We’ve already gotten a good look at some purported press images of the LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-made Nexus 6P, including a long list of specs for each device. But if you thought you’d have to wait until the official unveiling on October 29th to get another look at the new handsets, we have some good news for you. Someone has just leaked an official Google presentation for the Huawei Nexus 6P, giving us many more details on the upcoming higher-end Nexus device.

According to the slides, the Huawei Nexus 6P will feature a 5.7-inch WQHD display, a slim, metal unibody, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, dual front-facing speakers and a USB Type-C port. All of these specifications have been rumored for some time, so these shouldn’t come as a surprise. What hasn’t been rumored is the device’s battery size, which, according to the slides, will come in at 3450mAh. The 6P’s screen will also be made of Gorilla Glass 4. The device will also weigh a total of 178 grams, which is relatively light considering the Nexus 6P’s all-metal build. For comparison, the Motorola Nexus 6 weighs 184 grams.
The device will come in 32, 64 and 128GB variants and will be available in Aluminum, Graphite, Frost and Gold color options. The Gold option will be a Japan-exclusive for the time being.

Aside from the specs listed above, the slides aren’t really showing us any other new bits of information we haven’t heard in the past. One slide does talk about the 6P’s improved camera that will let in more light for better quality photos, as well as a faster Google Camera application that will let you capture photos much more quickly.

There are also some slides that detail some new features that will be available with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, including Google Now on Tap and the new Doze feature that will help save precious battery life.
We’re still not sure how much money this device will cost or when exactly it will be available, but we probably won’t need to wait much longer to find out.
Google’s Nexus 5X hits the FCC with support for all big US carriers
Google’s Nexus phones haven’t had the best cross-carrier support in the US (ahem, Verizon), but that might change when the Nexus 5X and 6P roll into town. The Nexus 5X has just swung by the FCC for approval, and one filing is for a model that appears to support all four major US carriers in at least some capacity — there are concerns that it might not handle T-Mobile’s existing 3G, but this does include Verizon support. There’s also a second variant of the LG-made device that removes some frequency bands and appears destined for other countries. There’s not much to see beyond this, although the FCC’s measurements back rumors that the 5X will have a 5.2-inch screen. Will this Nexus actually work with every major US network when it launches? It’s hard to say for sure, but you’ll likely get the full scoop at Google’s event in a few days.

The LG Nexus 5X passes through the FCC, reveals more specs
If you needed more confirmation that we’re going to be seeing a new LG Nexus at next week’s Google event, you’re in luck. The LG Nexus 5X, or what would strongly appear to be, has now passed through the FCC. It’s probably not a coincidence this happened late on a Friday when a smaller amount of eyes would be around to check out the documents and the resulting media coverage.
You can blame our leak culture if you already know all about the Nexus 5X, but the new FCC documents seem to confirm a few of the details we already knew. In the filing, we see that the LG H790 and H791, the two versions of the new Nexus, are CDMA/GSM/LTE phones that sport Bluetooth 4.2, WiFI a/b/g/n/ac dual band, and NFC. The devices have 5.2″ screens with bodies measuring 146.9 x 72.5mm.
The H791, for some reason, is listed with a 4.4″ screen with a 146.1 x 72.2mm body. Rather than this being a second smaller Nexus device from LG, it’s more likely that this is just an error. Much like the 2013 LG Nexus 5 that came in two models (D820 and D821), one for the US and one global model, we expect this to be the same case.
We’re also getting a look at the impressive list of bands that the Nexus 5X will support.
2G: 850/1900MHz
3G: Band 2/4/5
LTE (H790): FD-LTE: Band 2(1900MHz)/4(1700MHz)/5(850MHz)/7(2600MHz)/12(700MHz)/13 (700MHz)/17 (700MHz)/25 (1900MHz)/26 (850MHz), TD-LTE: Band 41(2500MHz)
LTE (H791): TD-LTE: Band 2(1900MHz)/4(1700MHz)/5(850MHz)/7(2600MHz)/17 (700MHz)/26 (850MHz), FDD-LTE: Band 41(2500MHz)
We’re looking forward to the big Android event on September 29th where Google will take the wraps off of two new Nexus phones and hopefully have some surprises up their sleeves. We’ll be in attendance and will bring you the latest details as they become available.

LG video teases unconventional display in upcoming phone
Due October 1, the forthcoming handset should feature a second, “ticker” display
LG has published a video which looks to be teasing a rather unique display for an upcoming smartphone. There’s no outright mention of a handset nor are there any specs highlighted in the short clip which has been posted to YouTube. What it does offer up, however, is a glimpse at how the screen might operate.
In short, we should expect to see extra an display. Said screen will likely be used to show notifications for messages, missed calls, emails, and more. We don’t anticipate it being all that much different than what the “Edge” does for select Samsung smartphones.
Rumors have circulated for a few weeks that LG plans to announce a smartphone with a secondary “ticker” display. The teaser video somewhat confirms that the bonus screen will be at the top, to the right of the camera.
We won’t have to wait long to see what LG has in store for us. The YouTube video indicates all will be revealed on October 1.
