LG reportedly conforming to a full metal build on the G5
This year, LG was left abandoned in the stand to continue offering a removable back cover and swappable battery in a flagship phone. Its last accomplice, Samsung, gave in and overhauled its lineup this year in favor for a more fashionable build. That didn’t sit well with a lot of Samsung’s fans. Unfortunately, it’s sounding like LG’s flagship may be susceptible to a similar fate next year.
According to a report via the Korean tech news site etnews, LG is moving forward with a “full metal case” for the G5. We know LG’s functionality stance, but underwhelming sales this year may be what’s behind the push to present customers with a “premium” design, especially amid the fierce competition.
The recently launched V10 can be seen as evidence for this transition. LG introduced stainless-steel metal in the V10’s design, as bumpers on the sides of the phone. We praised the design in our review, both in appearance and practicality. The V10 is still a plastic-built phone and has a user-accessible battery. But this might not be enough to capture customer attention.

Fortunately, it sounds like LG won’t be copying other metal case strategies (which can’t be said of every OEM). It is said that the new design will differentiate LG from the competition.
““A person, whom saw LG Electronics’ prototype, from this industry said that he or she definitely felt design that took a major step forward than previous Smartphones.”“
The LG G5 is expected to drop in Q1 of next year, most likely in the February time-frame near Mobile World Congress. This means it’ll be toe-to-toe with the Galaxy S7. It is also said that LG wants the G5 to be available as soon as it’s announced. Be prepared for an aggressive launch and competition soon.
What are your thoughts about LG’s developments? I’m banking that it can figure out a balance that will satisfy everyone.

LG’s smart TVs will stream Google Play movies this month
Who said that TVs with Google Play Movies & TV had to be running Android? Certainly not LG. It just announced that many of its recent smart TVs (including both webOS– and NetCast-based models) will offer Google Play streaming this month. While it’s not as if you’ve been hurting for viewing options on any of these sets, this could be extremely useful if you prefer to buy or rent movies and want to sync your viewing between your smartphone and a big screen. TV shows will only be available on launch in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, but you’ll find movies in a whopping 104 countries.

LG G5 coming in Q1 2016, with metal body, and new design – Korean report

Following a report from yesterday claiming LG would adopt a metal unibody for its next flagship, more details about the LG G5 have surfaced in an English language report from Korea’s ETNews.
Citing industry sources, the publication confirms that the LG G5 will feature a “full metal case” that would enable it to compete on equal terms with flagships from Samsung or Apple. This comes as no surprise, as LG is the last large OEM holding onto plastic designs for its flagships. With financial losses and lackluster sales, LG needs to adopt metal if it wants to stay competitive in the high-end market.
LG is already using metal on the impressive V10, but only for its frame. The device’s stainless steel and silicone construction makes it extremely resilient to shocks, without the compromises that typically come with rugged phones. But for the G5, LG will go full metal.
“MAJOR STEP FORWARD”
If LG adopts a fully metallic design for the G5, there’s a high chance that the device will lack a removable battery and, potentially, a microSD slot. These were big selling points for the G4 and one of the few advantages that LG’s phone had over Samsung’s Galaxy S6.
LG is reportedly moving away from the design language established on the past three generations of the G series. One person that had supposedly seen the device called it a “major step forward” compared to LG’s previous phone.
The Korean sources claim LG plans to launch the G5 in Q1 2016, to go head to head against the local rivals from Samsung. MWC 2016, at the end of February, is mentioned as a potential release date, though that seems to be just an educated guess by ETNews.
The report says LG wants to release the G5 right after its official debut, and that production of components for the “strategic device” is already underway.
This is far from official information, but it all sounds very plausible. LG was caught wrong-footed this year, when it used leather to spice up the otherwise played-out design of the G4. The company cannot risk another dud next year.

You get what you pay for with Walmart’s $10 Android phone
Walmart is known for its heavily discounted goods, and in another display of price-slashing has just announced that it will sell two Android smartphones for $10 each. Prior to this offer, the cheapest smartphone on the market was the $35 Firefox OS phone. Wondering what you get for $10? Well, not a whole lot. Both TracFone LG handsets (the Sunrise L15G and Lucky LG16) offer low-grade specs and old software, running Android 4.4 KitKat, the version released two years ago. However for that price, you shouldn’t expect them to run Marshmallow. You also get WiFi, but no 4G and no front-facing camera which means it’s going to be a lot harder to take a selfie. On the plus side, the phones support a microSD card which means you can ramp up the measly 4GB of storage. With all that said, there’s no clear difference between the two models as all the specs and software are the same. However, if you want a bare-bones yet functional smartphone for less than the price of dinner, we’re sure you know where to find a Walmart.

Walmart is selling a $10 Android smartphone with better specs than the first iPhone

The year was 2007. On the radio, Mims was struggling to articulate exactly why he was hot and Fergie was rubbing her “Glamorous” lifestyle in our collective faces. George W. Bush was president, and Steve Jobs showcased the smartphone that would revolutionize the market: the original iPhone.

It’s eight years later, and now Walmart is selling a device that trumps that smartphone handedly. Only instead of costing you $599, this LG Android device is going for $9.82.
Granted, it’s running a paleolithic version of Android that isn’t exactly ideal from a security standpoint, and you’re probably not going to make much progress on Octodad with it. Nevertheless, the idea that you can get this level of technology for a single Alexander Hamilton is pretty mind-blowing.
The LG TracFone has a 3.8-inch display and a 3MP camera. It can’t swing 4G, but 3G networks are within its reach. With its wifi capabilities, you could easily stream some pretty decent video on the device, and streaming music from a service like Google Play Music All Access or Spotify would be well within its reach.
Consider this: Walmart sells a 4GB USB flash drive for about the same price. This smartphone has the same amount of internal storage, except you can also order pizza on it and tweet Obama your opinions on geopolitical issues.
This colossal price drop serves as a reminder of how fast this competitive industry is developing. Imagine the phone in your pocket clasped in clamshell packaging and strung on a rack at a megastore for a handful of dollars. That’s a reality less than a decade away, and the technology that will have rendered it nearly obsolete will be at most people’s fingertips. The future will be fascinating.
LG G5 may have a metal unibody design

Assuming Samsung had not sprung for the metal and glass Galaxy S6 design language, it’s likely that critics of LG’s G4 would have found much less to complain about. In the end, what the company did produce was a refinement of its G3 from last year, and – in part – attention was paid to the fact that this year’s offering still supplied a user replaceable battery and included microSD support. Two things Samsung removed. Still, the build quality was often cited as being a cause for the consideration that the G4 was “not premium”. Things may be in for a major change next year, at least based on a new rumor.
A report on Naver posted earlier today suggests that LG will in fact, be using a metal unibody for 2016’s G5. While this isn’t much to go on, it would logically make sense given that the company has already sought to include metal in its recently released V10 handset. While it would remain to be seen as to what kind of metal the G5 would have – the V10 is amazingly resilient to drops – at the very least it would serve to offer a more direct rivalry with whatever premium product Samsung plans to launch next year, be it early or business as usual.

LG has been suffering from sluggish sales, both with its G4 and – at least according to reports in Korea – the new V10. This kind of drastic design difference could be just what the doctor ordered.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind our readers that until LG itself makes any information public, this kind of news is therefore unconfirmed and speculative.
What do you think? Would a unibody design make all the difference for your consideration of the G5? While it would seemingly negate the user-replaceable battery bit, microSD could still be supported. Let us know in the comments section below!

LG’s Lucky LG16 smartphone costs less than $10 at Walmart
What would you regard as a cheap smartphone? It all depends on your circumstances, some would consider the Moto G 2015 to be a cheap handset, whilst others would be looking at a price in double figures as a good start. What about under $10? You may think its crazy, but LG’s TracFone Lucky LG16 costs just $9.82 from Walmart. Really. And if that isn’t enough of a bargain for you, shipping is included free of charge.
For under ten bucks, you aren’t going to get a whole load of bells and whistles, but you do get full access to Google’s Play Store. Let’s take a look at what the TracFone Lucky LG16 brings to the table.
Specifications:
- Android 4.4 KitKat
- 3.8-Inch TFT display (320 x 480 resolution)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 Dual-core processor @ 1.2GHz

- 4GB Internal storage
- MicroSD card support (up to 32GB)

Is Google planning to build its own smartphone?
Why would Google produce its own phone? Standardization.
According to a few recent reports, Google is talking internally, yet again, about building its own phone. This is no Nexus phone, but a Google-manufactured handset through and through. But why? Be sure to check out Jayce’s video above and Bogdan’s full post attached below for our speculation.
Grab a refurb Nexus 5 for only $150 this weekend only
This weekend only, Daily Steals is offering refurbished Nexus 5s, typically $300, for the record-low price of $150.
The LG smartphone runs Android Marshmallow and sports 2 gigs of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8MP camera, and a Snapdragon 800 chip. These unlocked, refurb Nexus 5 D820 devices don’t appear to have any warranty information, but Daily Steals has a standing policy to accept any returns within a month of purchase.
Although it’s now two years old, the Nexus 5 remains an excellent balance of cost and performance. At this reduced price, the bang-per-buck ratio is staggering. On release, the device was praised for its high-quality 5-inch screen and minimalist appearance. The Nexus 5 originally had a $400 price tag, but was compared favorably to devices costing $650 or more. Google’s no-frills approach to designing the Nexus 5 was thought to be an object lesson by the company that high-quality Android devices could be created without costing a fortune.
The Daily Steals’ offer for this smartphone expires on Monday, so if you’re in the market for an unlocked Android device on a budget, now is your time to act.
Head on over to Daily Steals to order your Nexus 5 for $150
What do you think? Going to pick one up? I’m almost tempted to grab one for resale at this price. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
