LG G4 being updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in parts of Europe

Given that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is quickly approaching the two month mark from when it was first made available to Nexus devices, customers using devices made by other OEMs are no doubt wondering when the gooey goodness will be melting with their mobile.

Some may recall that, much like with Lollipop last year, LG quickly released the new OS build to G4 users in Poland, a country which often sees itself serving as a test market for this kind of thing. Soon after Korean variants started to get 6.0. Now it seems the time is finally at hand for Europe-at-large to munch on Marshmallow, though sadly not all of it.

sq01SZK Nookiezilla (reddit)

According to users on reddit, the update is being distributed via LG Bridge, the Korean company’s PC companion software. The file size is approximately 1.55GB. User 365365, via a German forum, found a list of devices currently eligible for the update. In the time since the original posting however, s/he has added the following note, that [s/he is] “getting mixed answers, post might be just completly wrong ¯_(ツ)_/¯”. LG itself has an official site dedicated to detailing the changes brought on by Marshmallow, which can be viewed here. Some of the more noticeable ones include:

Knock Code is to be updated to offer a better experience for the latest OS. You must now have at least 6 taps and use 3 different quarters in your knock code. To unlock the screen, the knock code for the current user can only be used.

Silent mode has been added to the sound profile.
You can silence the phone in the notification panel or in the volume panel that shows when you press the Volume keys.
You can also silence the phone in Settings > Sound & notification.
Before, you had to use Interruptions to silence the phone.
Now, it can be done with just one or two taps.

Interruptions has been renamed to Do not disturb.
With this, you can schedule downtimes to not be disturbed by notifications from some or all apps.
Alarms will sound or vibrate when Do not disturb is set to Priority only. Alarms will be silenced when Do not disturb is set to Total silence.

G4 Silent Mode

Allow peeking has been added to Settings so that you can now see notifications at the top of the screen and have none of them block the screen.
You can allow peeking in Settings > General > Apps.

For the full list of features and detailed descriptions, we recommend visiting LG’s website and familiarizing yourself with everything.

Wrap Up

There is some talk on reddit that the updates are only hitting unlocked devices, thus it may be some time yet before carrier variants receive Marshmallow. Likewise, there seem to be a number of countries in Europe that haven’t received the update yet; at the moment it’s unclear as to if LG will be distributing it to all territories or if the roll-out will be in stages. We will update this story accordingly as we learn more information.

At the very least, LG has once again managed to get a new Android OS build out before just about all of its rivals. Those interested in the other flagship of 2015, the V10, might be somewhat saddened to note that the Korean OEM isn’t planning to update said device until next year, no doubt a result of the unique situation related to the second display.

Let us know if you’ve received Marshmallow on your G4 yet, and if you have, what your initial impressions are.

LG expanding OLED production capability

LG is just getting over pulling the 2nd generation LG Watch Urbane 2 due a problem with the display, but that is not stopping the electronics giant from investing even more heavily in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panels. Yesterday it was revealed that LG Display has plans to invest over 10 trillion won ($8.7 billion USD) to build a new plant producing OLED panels.

The initial investment in the plant will be 1.84 trillion won ($1.6 billion USD) to commence construction. The facility will be located in Paju, South Korea. LG Display says the facility will produce panels across the entire range of devices, from large screen televisions all the way down to small wearables like smartwatches. The plant is expected to commence production in 2018.

Although not confirmed, some sources believe part of the impetus for LG’s latest investment in OLED production is a belief that Apple will switch to the technology for use in their iPhone smartphones in 2018.

LG has no plans to release the V10 in Canada

LG V10 Hands On-5

LG has been making some major news in the past week; let’s try to recount some of it: A canceled Urbane 2, a flagship campaign, a major management restructuring, a new mobile processor, and even a massive monetary investment.

The news we are now reporting on however, is sure to sound somber to some. LG Canada, via a reply on Facebook, has now confirmed that the new V10 will not be released in the country.

Here is the original post that user Jason Schabler asked LG Canada:

LG are you going to update the status of when the V10 is coming to Canada , before xmass or ? By not responding I assume you want people to look elsewhere for their cell phone fixes and needs. I know for one if the V10 does not come to Canada soon Samsung wants my business. Cheers. J

And here is the reply:

Hello Jason, Thanks for your excitement and interest in LG and our products! Unfortunately, there aren’t any plans to bring the V10 to Canada. We encourage you to check out some of other amazing phones, like our flagship LG G4. It boasts a highly-reviewed camera, quad-HD screen and offers an incredible visual experience. Thanks again, Anna, LG Canada Social Media Team.

What to think…

While this news will no doubt disappoint those, like Mr Schabler, who were holding out in hope, do note that there have been times in the past when social media teams have posted inaccurate information. One such example, earlier this year, saw a Sony Twitter account proclaiming only Z-series devices would be updated to Lollipop, something that was quickly rendered inaccurate as other lettered models began to receive it.

Still, given that this is the only official answer that has been given from LG about the matter, it should be taken as the company’s official stance until proven otherwise.

…and why to think it

Released last month, the LG V10 packs some of the same advanced hardware seen in the spring’s G4, but adds in new features like a metal frame along the sides of the device and a secondary ticker display. It is also extremely resistant to damage from drops, as we found out first hand. Given that it’s the company’s secondary flagship of the year, and in some ways higher than the G line itself, one might think a glorified global roll-out would be a proper priority.

LG V10 Hands On-3

While this is just speculation, it’s quite possible that the phone has not been faring as favorably as some might have foreseen. Reports had already came out of Korea shortly after launch there that suggested this was happening. Perhaps more telling though, LG itself has not released any PR statements to make prominent proclamations of people purchasing the product. The restructuring details alluded to at the opening of this piece would further this belief, as sales of the phone are arguably not significant enough as to calm the nerves of the smartphone segment’s performance and viability.

Wrap Up

LG V10 04

What do you think about this news? Are our Canadian readers upset by it? Were you planning to get the V10, or had you already set your sights on something else? For that matter, are customers in other countries bothered by this development, given that Samsung also decided to deny availability of one of its most proper products to an entire part of the world’s population?

Perhaps the larger, looming and lingering question though: for those in Canada who wanted the device, will you now take to importing it if you haven’t done so already?

LG announces substantial investment in next gen OLED production

lg2

LG Display is one of the major players in the growing OLED display panel business and the company has just announced a major investment to boost future production. LG is to spend KRW 1.84 trillion ($1.59 billion) to begin building a new plant in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, with production expected to commence in the first half of 2018.

The new manufacturing facility will be known as the P10 plant and will be the size of 14 football fields, reaching 100 meters tall. The P10 plant is expected to cover manufacturing of a wide range of panel sizes and is stated to be used for the production of large OLED panels for the TV market, along with smaller flexible OLED displays for the smartwatch and automotive markets. The first KRW 1.84 trillion covers the basic building of the plant, while LG’s total investment in the new facility is expected to reach more than KRW 10 trillion ($8.71 billion) as production scales up.

http://live.amcharts.com/xZjk4/embed/

OLED is seen as a key investment for LG going forward, as the company looks for ways to continue to differentiate its products from the competition and moves to make its technology more price competitive with rival LCD products. OLED benefits and improvements over LCD displays when it comes to color gamut and power efficiency are expected to fuel growing demand over the next decade. The market is estimated to be worth $29.1 billion by 2022, according to market research firm IHS.

LG had previously announced other notable investments to increase its OLED production capabilities, including KRW 1.05 trillion ($0.91 billion) into a 6th generation flexible OLED display production line at the Gumi Plant in Gyeongbuk Province. Rival OLED manufacturer Samsung has also announced its own plans to boost OLED manufacturing this year and recently sold off LCD manufacturing assets to make room for additional OLED production.

Show Press Release

Seoul, Korea (Nov. 27, 2015) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will invest KRW1.84 trillion to begin building a new  panel plant in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, with production expected to commence in the first half of 2018.

The company decided on the new plant, known as P10, because of anticipated demand for OLED panels over the next several years. The P10 plant will mainly produce both large-size OLED TV panels and flexible OLED panels for smartwatches and automotive displays.

The KRW1.84 trillion investment covers the construction of the P10 building, the foundations for the clean rooms and infrastructure for water and power supplies and will begin this year. The total investment in the P10 plant is expected to reach more than KRW10 trillion, and with LG Display gradually expanding the scale of the production line based on customer demand and market conditions.

The completed plant will cover an area of 382m x 265m, which is equivalent in size to 14 football fields, and will be 100 meters high. Plans call mostly for the installation of large size OLED lines that will be 9th generation or above along with flexible OLED lines at the new plant. The first production line is scheduled to start mass production in the first half of 2018.

The company is expecting the lines will produce OLED in every product segment, including ultra large-size products as well as future products such as flexible and transparent displays. Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and President of LG Display said, “LG Display’s investment in P10 Plant is a historical investment for the industry since it will not only help expand the OLED market but also accelerate the development of future display technologies. With the active support of the Korean government, we believe the P10 plant will become the center of the global OLED industry.”

IHS, the market research firm, forecasts the global OLED panel market will grow to $29.1 billion in 2022 from $8.7 billion in 2014.

TV manufacturers in Korea, China and Japan have already launched OLED TV models and more TV manufacturers in Japan and Europe are expected to adopt OLED TVs in the near future. Demand for flexible OLED panels in the smartwatch and automotive display sectors is also rising because they offer better design flexibility than LCD panels.

LG Display announced in August that it would invest more than KRW10 trillion in expanding production of large-size OLED panels, flexible OLED panels and premium LCDs by 2018. The company has already announced it will invest KRW1.05 trillion in a 6th generation flexible OLED production line in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk Province. The 6th- generation production line will produce 7,500 sheets per month and is expected to start mass production in the first half of 2017.

Report: LG Electronics working on its second mobile processor

Lg g3 screen nuclun (2)

LG is gearing up to go up against Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung with its second mobile application processor, according to industry sources. LG’s Nuclun 2 SoC, as the chip is known, could make an appearance in a future flagship LG smartphone.

According to the source, the Nuclun 2 will be an octa-core design based on ARM’s Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 CPU cores, with clock speeds set at 2.1GHz and 1.5GHz respectively. LG Electronics is said to be working with Intel’s 14nm FinFET manufacturing process and TSMC’s similar 16nm technology, either of which would be a notable improvement over the 28nm process used for its first chip.

LG launched its first application processor, the octa-core Nuclun 1, back in 2014. The SoC made its début inside LG’s G3 Screen smartphone and was designed to make the most of high speed LTE-A networks in South Korea. Although the processor didn’t quite compete with other chips in terms of performance at the time, LG is said to be targeting its Nuclun 2 at its premium smartphones.

LG is most likely continuing to develop its own application processors so that it can reduce its dependency on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series. This would afford LG greater flexibility with its design and performance optimizations, while also potentially allowing the company to generate additional revenue per smartphone in the long run.

Furthermore, as Qualcomm is expected to use Samsung’s FinFET production line with its Snapdragon 820, LG is unlikely to want to rely on one of its main electronics rivals. Speaking of which, Samsung has similarly managed to reduce its dependency on Qualcomm with its Exynos series of mobile processors and can also leverage its cutting edge manufacturing facilities.

It’s not clear if LG will opt for Intel’s or TSMC’s process. The decision will likely boil down to which company offers the most stable design and the highest performance.

LG’s spending billions to make more OLED things

LG’s OLED 4K TVs are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but the price still isn’t anywhere near the level it needs to be for mass consumer adoption. Hopefully the company’s new manufacturing plant can help that a bit thanks to economies of scale. A Reuters report says that the South Korean firm is spending some $8.71 billion (around 10 trillion Korean won) on a new manufacturing facility for the display panels in Paju, South Korea. Perhaps this can make up for some of the losses the tech giant suffered by halting production at one of its TV plants due to a gas leak earlier this year.
