LG gives a taste of the upcoming G3 with its first QuadHD phone

KDDI has just launched the first QuadHD (QHD) phone solely for the Japanese market, the Isai FL model built by LG. That gives us a preview of LG’s G3′s 5.5-inch 2,560 x 1,440 display and its record 538ppi resolution. As it happens, LG just announced that the panel has now been certified, and re-confirmed that it’ll be installed in it’s “forthcoming flagship smartphone,” ie the G3. KDDI’s model may may give us an idea of what LG’s eagerly-awaited G2 successor will be like spec-wise, too. The Isai FL has the narrow bezels we saw in leaked images of the G3, but sports a different design lacking the LG’s rear buttons and rumored metal back. It also has some of LG’s Knock functions and will come in three colors with a 13-megapixel camera, 3,000mAh battery, 2GB of RAM and a quad-core Snapdragon 2.5GHz CPU. That lines up with some of the G3′s rumored specs, but we won’t have to wait long to know them — it’s set to arrive on May 27th.

Newly certified LG 5.5-inch Quad HD display must be for LG G3 Display

LG G3 DisplayWe’ve heard many rumours about the LG G3 over the last few days, but this piece of information definitely seems the most definitive. LG Display, LG‘s screen development unit, has received NEMKO certification of a 5.5-inch Quad HD resolution display it has been working on, which is a dead ringer for the LG G3 display. As you might expect, this means this display will have a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels which will result in 538 pixels per inch.

So far, we’ve only had suspected details about the LG G3, but the fact that it correlates with the 5.5-inch display that has been rumoured does definitely suggest the G3 is well on its way. Mass production of the display is said to kick in “shortly”, which is perfect considering the timing of the LG event on May 27th.

Get the best phones of 2013 for a penny on Amazon

LG-G2-vs.-Galaxy-S4-Moto-X-HTC-One-on-paper

Technology is great.  Every year devices get stronger and more powerful.  To me, last year was a breakthrough year in regards for smartphone development because we had finally reached a point where we had enough RAM and processing power to run most apps seemingly effortlessly.

In 2013, the potential customer had to pick their potential phone based on things other than specs (i.e. build quality, camera, screen size, etc.). These Flagships from last year can still compete with the best phones of today.

Because last generations big name phones still perform superbly, I have no problem recommending any them to those inquiring about which phone to purchase.

With that being said, I am again making that recommendation as Amazon has last year’s flagships on sale for 1 red cent with a 2-year contract.

Whether its the fit and finish of the HTC One (M7), the endless features of the Samsung Galaxy S4, or the battery life of the LG G2, there is a smartphone here to fit your needs.

So go ahead, don’t be nervous about buying one of these phones as they still perform spectacularly and will be relevant for some time to come. For a penny you can’t go wrong.

HTC One (M7)      AT&T, Verizon, Sprint

LG G3 rumored with Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM, and 13MP Camera

LG-G3-design-leak

The upcoming LG G3 just got some more details according to a new leak which suggests that the device will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805.

This will be coupled with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD display, and a 13-Megapixel camera featuring OIS+.

Still up for debate however is the material that the LG G3 is made out of, with some leaks suggesting plastic like the LG G2, or a metallic rear casing as suggested by @evleaks leaked image.

Interestingly, the rumoured 3,200mAh battery will also be removable but as with any leaks and rumours should be taken with precaution since anything could change before the official launch next month.

LG’s SMS-activated smart appliances are ready to wsh ur shts

If you’re rich and lonely, LG is now rolling out the SMS-controlled smart appliances it previewed earlier this year. You can send commands “much like chatting with a friend” to the Smart Refrigerator, Washing Machine and Lightwave Oven using the LINE messaging app and LG’s WiFi-based HomeChat system. For example, text “what are you doing?” to the washing machine, and you’ll get a real-time response on its progress (hopefully not “I’m flooding the basement”). The Smart Oven will provide recipe recommendations and set the temperature and cooking time for your chosen dish. Finally, the Smart Refrigerator’s built-in wide-angle camera will track your food habits and generate shopping lists automatically, to name a few examples. They’re now available in Korea, but will also arrive to the US and elsewhere soon. LG hasn’t listed prices yet, but if you’ve never shopped for smart appliances before, brace yourself.

LG G3 hardware specs leaked by insider, include Snapdragon 805, 3200mAh battery and 13MP Sony Camera with OIS+

LG G3 hardware specsEarlier today we got our best look at what the LG G3 is probably going to look like on the outside (see here), however, we really don’t have that much of an idea of what the next LG flagship smartphone will have on the inside. An insider has leaked what will probably be the final LG G3 hardware specs which include a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 5.5-inch Quad HD display with a 3,200mAh battery. The inside goes on to say that the G3 will also possess a 13MP Sony camera sensor (the same as the one in the OnePlus One) which will be enhanced by OIS+ which first featured on the LG G Pro 2.

The tip from the insider does look pretty good, and it does line up with what we know about the Snapdragon 805 at least which was supposedly due in devices in May. However, the specs cited do also disagree with what we’ve previously learned about the G3, in particular that the insider says that the G3 will be made out of polycarbonate. Whether the above leaked photo is of a prototype G3 or this tip is a hoax, we’ll really only know when LG announces that device which is expected to occur at LG’s event on May 27th.

What do you think about these LG G3 hardware specs? Would you get one if it had these specifications? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Will the LG G3 have a brushed aluminium back? This leaked photo says “Yes”

Will the LG G3 have a brushed aluminium backFor the longest time, we have asked questions about the materials going into the LG G3: will the LG G3 have a brushed aluminium back? Will it be plastic? Recent rumours appeared inconclusive as they appear to show the LG G3 shrouded in a plastic case, hiding the material beneath. Thank to evleaks though, we have our best look at the back of the LG G3 and it looks very much like brushed aluminium is going to be the material of choice.

In the photo, you can see the outline of what should be the button of the rear volume buttons as well as the LG logo adorning what is the middle of the back cover. The brushed aluminium is, of course, desperately good looking and looks to have taken a leaf out of the HTC One M8′s book. We likely won’t need long to find out if this is the truth as the LG G3 is expected to be announced at LG’s announcement event on May 27th.

What do you think about the brushed aluminium back of the LG G3? Are you more excited about the new flagship smartphone now? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

You can get LG’s first Chrome all-in-one later this month for $350

Five months is almost enough time for us to question whether a product announced at CES will become vaporware, so any news about the LG Chromebase is welcome. This morning, we learned that LG’s first Chrome OS-based all-in-one will be officially available at online retailers on May 26th for $350. The Chromebase comes with a 21.6-inch 1080p IPS LCD, an Intel processor that’s based on Haswell and 100GB storage space on Google Drive for two years. This was just one product out of several announced in tandem by Google and Intel today, all of which are reasonably priced and are aimed at competing against the PC industry.

Google aims for the mainstream with 20 new, more powerful Chromebooks

If you haven’t picked up a Chromebook just yet, you might want to wait a little longer. Intel has just announced that it plans to roll out as many as 20 new Chromebooks by the latter half of this year. This new set will be thinner, lighter, more powerful and generally more diverse in terms of design. It’s clear that Google is making a play for the mainstream.

Most of these will be based on Intel’s more powerful and efficient Bay Trail-M system on a chip.

“Bay Trail is optimized for power, performance and cost,” Intel’s VP and general manager, Navin Shenoy, said. “The first Chromebooks are also now available with over 11 hours of battery life, which is up from about 10 hours on Haswell.”

They’re also the first ever Chrome devices to be fanless, he said, and will be 15% lighter. Also expect a lot more different Chromebook designs and form factors. There’ll be some models with touchscreens, and some, like the Yoga, will have a folding display. In addition to just Chromebooks, Intel also introduced a tiny HP Chromebox that you’ll be able to hook up to any display and announced the availability of LG’s all-in-one Chromebase. Last but not least, Shenoy also announced that all of the Chrome devices released today will be made with the world’s first “conflict-free” microprocessors, that were not mined by slave regimes in the Republic of Congo.

At least a couple of them will be based on the company’s Core i3 processor, including an Acer version that’ll be available for $349 this summer and an updated version of Dell’s 11-inch model that should ship later in 2014. In addition, Intel is partnering with at least four major manufacturers — Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Toshiba — to produce Bay Trail-powered devices. Lenovo has announced two of these last night: the N20 and N20p. Not to be left out, ASUS also rolled out a couple of new offerings. They include an 11.6-inch C200 and a 13.3-inch C300, both of which will begin shipping this summer.

Caesar Sengupta, VP of product management at Google, took to the stage to say that sales numbers for the Chrome devices have been great. “Chromebox is the number one selling desktop,” he said, “And the top six rated laptops on Amazon are all Chromebooks. They’re both the highest rated and the most affordable.” He also pointed out that eight of the top computer manufacturers offer Chromebooks, and that Chrome devices are available in over 20 countries and nearly 10,000 schools, with more coming in the future. Shenoy also showed off an education Chromebook reference design that he hopes will inform the next generation of Chromebooks for schools. In addition, Sengupta told us that not only are Google Now and voice commands coming to Chromebooks, but also Play movies will be available to view offline as well. “The momentum is solid and gathering pace,” he said.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD display rumoured to arrive in June to counter LG G3 Release

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD displayWe’ve suspected for some time now that Samsung will be bringing out a slightly updated version of its Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone with a higher resolution screen and slightly updated hardware specs. This so-called Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD display is rumoured to be Samsung’s answer to the LG G3 which is expected to be announced as soon as LG’s event on May 27th, and will include the elusive 2K resolution display that was absent from the Galaxy S5 that launched in early April.

While we had almost believed that Samsung had perhaps sensibly decided that 1080p displays are as detailed as smartphone screens need to be, the reason, according to the Korea Herald, is actually that Samsung found that producing AMOLED displays with 2560×1440 pixels in large enough quantities to meet the demand for the global launch for the Galaxy S5 was just too expensive. To counter this supply issue, Samsung resolved to release a second device, this Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, at higher cost and with the 2K resolution display which would undoubtably sell fewer devices than the flagship Galaxy S5. Whether the rest of the hardware in this Galxy S5 Prime would be different from the original remains to be seen, but we may find out sooner than later with June just around the corner.

What do you think about a 2K device like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime? Would you get this over the original Galaxy S5? Let us know your opinion in the comments.
