LG G Watch R release date is set for October 14th, but only in South Korea for now
With the Motorola Moto 360 currently owning a monopoly on the circular smartwatch arena, it was only a matter of time before its main competitor, the LG G Watch R, stepped into the ring. We’ve been wondering when the LG G Watch R release date was going to come and LG has today confirmed it itself that the wearable will be launching on October 14th. Now before you ready your money to throw, there is one catch – the LG G Watch R is only going to be launching in South Korea on that date. Don’t get too disappointed though as many other regions will likely get the device soon after, probably before the end of October, though that hasn’t yet been specified by LG.
The LG G Watch R was somewhat of a surprise release at IFA 2014 last month, particularly seeing as it had only launched its maiden Android Wear wearable, the LG G Watch, just two months prior. In fact, if you look at the stat sheet of the G Watch and the G Watch R, they will look very similar, the primary difference of course being the completely circular display – something even the Moto 360 lacked because of its ambient light sensor. And contrasting its Android Wear and indeed, all smartwatch, brethren, the LG G Watch R actually looks the most like a mainstream watch, something that may work in their favour when it goes global. No pricing has yet been confirmed.
What do you think about the LG G Watch R release date? Are you hoping to get one? Let us know your thoughts.

LG is bringing webOS to smartwatches
We can’t think of anything that’s had more comebacks than webOS, except for maybe The Eagles. Palm, HP and LG have all tried to turn the promising software into a rival for iOS and Android, but so far you’ll only find webOS in the Korean company’s line of smart TVs. Still, LG appears to be planning to extend the reach of the little operating system that could by baking it into a future line of smartwatches. The Verge has found an LG-sponsored website, since pulled, that promises a development kit for a webOS smartwatch is coming. Given that the company was quick to make the page disappear (although we’ve got some more images after the break), and that local rival Samsung keeps Tizen around as a bargaining tool with Google, it’s certainly plausible that we’ll see a webOS smartwatch in the future. The only question is if, after all this time, anyone will consider buying one.

3G-capable LG smartwatch appears in an FCC filing
LG’s apparently gearing up to release a new smartwatch in the US other than the G Watch R — one that’s 3G-capable, just like Samsung’s Gear S. A document that’s just passed through the FCC points to an oval/rectangular LG smartwatch (57.7 x 35.5 mm) slightly smaller than the Gear S (58.3 x 39.8 mm) which comes with CDMA connectivity. Because of its codename (VC100) and the fact that it supports Verizon’s CDMA frequencies (according to the FCC docs), it might just land on Big Red if there’s a US launch. With 3G connection built into the watch, it can presumably work on its own — download apps, make phone calls, send messages and connect to the internet, among others — without being paired with a smartphone. It may take a while until the mysterious smartwatch comes out, though, seeing as LG’s answer to the Moto 360 isn’t even out in the US yet.

The extended Nexus family: Google’s golden Android standard
Google’s Nexus line has long stood as the company’s ideal vision of its widely adopted, open-source Android operating system. The devices, be they smartphones, tablets or even one-off media streamers, are built in conjunction with select hardware partners and represent an ideal marriage of tech specs with an unadulterated version of Android. It’s Google’s way of dealing with fragmentation (read: skinned versions) in the mobile OS market it created; a reference mark for manufacturers to aspire to, so to speak.
On the tail of the original Android handset’s sixth anniversary and in the run-up to whatever new Nexuses come next, we take a look back at the hardware path that’s been Google’s gold standard for Android.

Pantech is putting itself up for sale after six consecutive quarters of losses
Pantech has the rather uneviable task of competing with mega smartphone companies like Samsung and LG in their home country of Korea, but has still managed to hold onto third place there for some time now. But six consecutive quarters of losses has to hurt, and the manufacturer has decided to put itself up for sale. Interested parties whose names have been swirling around include main competitors, Samsung and LG, as well as other Korean companies like car manufacturer, Hyundai, and telecommunications operator, SK Telecom. Even India’s Micromax and China’s Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi have pricked up their ears, particularly with the knowledge that 90% of the Korean smartphone market only buys Korean products, making buying Pantech an easy way to access the Korean market.
Interested parties will have until October 7th to lodge their offers, and the selling price is expected to be around $366 million USD. It’s pretty sad that Pantech has fallen on hard times as they have made some particularly beautiful devices in their time, like the Pantech Vega Iron, but you can probably guess how hard it is to compete with Samsung and LG hanging around. Still, we hope whoever buys them keeps the company intact and making those spiffy smartphones.
What do you think about Pantech going under the hammer? Let us know your thoughts.

Korean smartphone also-ran Pantech goes up for sale
If we asked you to think about a (South) Korean tech company, it’s highly likely that the names “Samsung” or “LG” would be the first to spring to mind. That’s one of the reasons that Pantech, the country’s third biggest manufacturer, is putting itself up for sale. Being sat behind two of the world’s biggest smartphone outfits has hurt the comparatively small business, which has recorded losses for six consecutive quarters. According to ZDNet Korea, the company decided to put itself up for sale because it’s worth a lot more as a going concern than it is being broken up and sold-off for scrap. Ouch.
As we reported a few years ago, Korea’s mobile market is fiercely patriotic, with consumers opting for a homegrown handset around 90 percent of the time. CNET believes that mobile manufacturers from China and India could all buy the struggling business as an easy way into the country’s highly valued, but closed-off market. Unfortunately, given that Pantech’s biggest owners are Korea’s state-owned bank, Samsung, and Qualcomm, it’s not particularly likely that an outside rival would be given a fair shake. ZDNet Korea believes that the most likely buyer is national carrier SK Telecom, although whoever did make a splash would have to deal with Pantech’s biggest issue: warehouse upon warehouse full of unsold smartphones.

LG releases new trailer for the LG G Watch R that contains really weird CGI
The Moto 360 may have been the smartwatch to watch the last few weeks, but if there’s one device that can challenge it in the short term, I believe it’s the LG G Watch R. LG‘s take on a circular Android Wear smartwatch looks much more like a traditional watch than the Moto 360, and as a result, has the opportunity to have much more mainstream appeal. LG has made quite a few emotive trailers before and after the device’s launch, and I just got an email about their latest trailer which shows off the G Watch R’s features. In short, it’s weird, but I’ll let you form your own opinions about it:
I’m all for CGI action and trailers, but why couldn’t they just do that with a real person? Anyway, back to the watch. Most of the features shown are more products of the Android Wear operating system rather than the G Watch R itself, but the features of note that others might not have include a fitness chronograph, hiking meter chronograph, world clock chronograph and water and dust resistance. It definitely looks like the G Watch R is geared more towards the burgeoning fitness sector of the market while still offering a more familiar, ‘normal’ watch experience.
Enough of what I think – what are your thoughts on the LG G Watch R and its new trailer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

LG bucks convention with Wine Smart flip smartphone

Not afraid to try something new (or is it old?), LG has announced a flip smartphone known as the Wine Smart. Powered by Android 4.4 KitKat, the internals include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, and 4GB internal storage with microSD expansion. Flipping open the phone we find a 3.5-inch 480×320 pixel LCD screen that sits above the traditional cell phone button configuration and keypad.
It’s not obvious where the LG Wine Smart will end up however we’d be surprised if it ventures outside of South Korea.
