LG to give away a plastic version of Google Cardboard to G3 owners

LG_VR_Plastic_Google_Cardboard_For_G3

With Samsung offering the Gear VR, many are wondering what LG, or even other Android manufacturers will do. LG is joining the party, but they are doing exactly the opposite of Samsung in that they are embracing Google, which is something Samsung never does.

LG VR is going to be based on Google Cardboard, except it will be tailored for the G3 and it will be made  from plastic. LG VR will utilize the same ring magnet found on Cardboard, and it will work with the G3 magnetic gyroscope to scroll through applications and menus. However, this VR will also leverage the rear volume rocker layout and the G3′s 1W speaker for better sound.

LG will offer the VR for free to G3 buyers in select markets soon, but didn’t specify when or what requirements you must meet in order to obtain the device if you already own the phone. They did say that users will also be able to download Roboliteration for free using a QR code from within the VR packaging.

LG G3 AND GOOGLE CARDBOARD BRING MOBILE VIRTUAL REALITY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

More Consumers Get Access to Affordable and Powerful VR Experience with LG’s VR for G3 Giveaway

SEOUL & MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 10, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) and Google are making virtual reality (VR) more accessible to mainstream consumers. LG today announced a free VR for G3 giveaway for customers who purchase new LG G3 smartphones. LG’s VR for G3 works with Google Cardboard and enables G3 owners to experience a variety of VR-compatible apps and games that they can download on the Google Play store.

Unlike other head-mounted VR devices that are designed with their own processors and displays, VR for G3 takes advantage of the visual and sound capabilities of G3 to offer a lighter and more convenient solution. Thanks to the LG G3’s class-leading Quad HD display, VR for G3 is able to provide users with much sharper image quality for a smoother, more realistic VR experience.

VR for G3 features a unique design that leverages the G3’s signature Rear Key layout, compared to other smartphones where the volume rockers are located on the side of the phone. This unique design also means VR for G3 takes full advantage of the flagship phone’s 1W speaker with Boost AMP to provide richer, clearer sound effects that complement the rich visuals. For a more personal experience, VR for G3 can be combined with a Bluetooth headsets such as LG Tone Infinim™  for wireless enjoyment.

The design of VR for G3 is based on the blueprint for Google Cardboard, available online for home DIY fans. The neodymium ring magnet on the side of the VR for G3 works with the magnetic gyroscope sensor in the G3 to select applications and scroll through menus without touching the display. VR for G3 requires no assembly other than inserting the phone in the viewer.

“While still in its infancy, this is just the beginning of the virtual reality movement which until recently was expensive and inaccessible to everyday consumers,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications at the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By leveraging Google Cardboard, not only are regular consumers able to participate in the VR experience, we’ll be able to introduce this technology to future developers who may one day show us how VR can be used to improve our lives.”

“With Google Cardboard, we wanted to create more immersive and delightful experiences for anyone on their mobile devices,” said Andrew Nartker, Product Manager for Google Cardboard. “We are excited about VR for G3, and the rich ecosystem of developers and manufacturers who are innovating with Google Cardboard and making VR more easily accessible.”

The VR for G3 promotion will roll out this month in select markets. Purchasers of LG G3 buyers can also download a free VR game, Robobliteration, using the in-box QR code.

LG announces a Cardboard-like virtual reality headset for the G3

vr for g3

As the virtual reality space is making headway from companies like Google and Samsung, we have yet to see any VR hardware from many other manufacturers. With that said, LG has just announced their new virtual reality headset made specifically for the G3, called VR for G3. Think of VR for G3 as a higher-end version of Google’s Cardboard. It’s plastic frame is powered by the G3, and has cut outs on the front for the rear-mounted volume keys and camera. LG is leveraging Google’s VR platform rather than building their own, allowing users to download different VR experiences directly from the Play Store.

LG-G3-VR

Just like Cardboard, VR for G3 features a neodymium ring magnet on the side that works with the magnetic gyroscope sensor in the G3 which allows the user to switch applications and scroll through menus without the need for a touchscreen display. What’s more, the headset doesn’t require any assembly process other than sliding the phone in the viewer.

VR for G3 doesn’t have a specific availability date yet, but it will roll out sometime this month in select markets. The headset will be free with the purchase of an LG G3. Moreover, VR for G3 owners can download a free VR game called Robobliteration, once they get the headset.

LG to hand out VR headsets for LG G3 purchases later this month

The Virtual Reality, or VR, movement has been picking up a little steam over the last year or so. Google certainly wasn’t the first, but they certainly did push the idea of using your smartphone as the screen and brains behind VR with their Google Cardboard project. It gave users and developers an easy way […]

LG builds its own mobile VR headset for the G3

Korea’s two largest companies are Samsung and LG, and while Samsung has been making a big splash in the VR world, LG has remained conspicuously silent. That’s because the company has been working with Google to build a headset for the LG G3 that’ll do a similar job to the Gear VR. The charmingly-named VR for G3 is a plastic headset that’ll let you slide the phone into the hardware, with special holes cut for the smartphone’s rear volume keys.

Rather than building its own virtual reality platform, however, LG has cribbed the design from Google’s paper-craft VR headset, Google Cardboard. The plastic hardware comes with at least one neat trick: a neodymium ring magnet on the side that’ll pair with the G3’s internal gyroscope, enabling you to control your phone without having to touch the display. Of course, by leveraging Google’s VR platform, LG can piggyback off the search engine’s software background rather than starting yet another rival in the nascent space.

Unfortunately there’s no word on how much it’ll cost or where you’ll be able to snag one. For now, the company is saying that it’ll launch in “selected markets” and that a headset will be thrown in for free when you purchase a G3. Naturally, we’ve pinged the company to find out more, and will let you know what we learn.

Sprint updating the HTC One (M8) and LG G3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop next week

sprint_android_5.0_lollipop_leaked_update_schedule

Sprint is on fire when it comes to updating devices to Lollipop. If the HTC One (M7) and the Galaxy S 5 wasn’t enough, how about the HTC One (M8) and the LG G3? A leaked document shows that the HTC One (M8) will get Android 5.0 Lollipop on February 13 and the LG G3 will get the tasty treat on February 16. If you happen to own the Harman Kardon edition of the One (M8), don’t fret, because it’s included in the update as well.

Of course, it should be noted that “subject to change” is listed so if anything goes wrong with the final testing, Sprint will delay the launch. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Android 5.0 Lollipop soon expected for multiple Sprint devices

This is some great news for Sprint customers out there. A few of HTC, LG, and Samsung’s most popular devices are receiving updates for Android 5.0 Lollipop on the network.

The update for the HTC One M7 was confirmed via Twitter by Mo, the Vice President of Product Management at HTC. Its OTA update started today. He notes that Lollipop is coming to other devices as well.

Android Central said that Lollipop is also coming to the HTC One M8 and One M8 Harmon Kardon edition on February 13th and to the LG G3 on February 16th. Although, this could be subject to change.

Sprint Lollipop update schedule

You can also see in the image that the Galaxy S5 should have also started receiving the update earlier today. That appears to be true based on confirmation directly from Samsung.

Congrats to all the Sprint owners out there. Hopefully, the other characters will quickly follow with updates for these and other devices.

Unknown Verizon LG device surfaces online with model number VS986

LG_G3_Back_Slanted_LG_Logo_02_TAAn announcement for the LG G4 is right around the corner, so it makes sense that models of the device will start showing up in databases online. Not too long ago we saw an LG device with a 3k display and the model number LG VS999 that we haven’t seen an equivalent for on other carriers. Verizon’s G3 model was the VS985, so it lined up. Today, though, another device with a different model has popped up that muddies things up a bit.

A new device with the model VS986 has appeared online, which is extremely close to the model of the G3. The G2′s model was the VS980, so this new model seems to fall closer in line with what LG and Verizon typically go with, but anything’s possible.

Since the VS999 had a 3k screen as opposed to the rumored 2k screen on the AT&T variant, it makes sense that this new VS986 would be the Verizon G4, but there are plenty of possibilities. The VS986 could be an incrementally upgraded G3, which Verizon has done in the past, and they could end up getting an uber high-resolution G4. The VS986 could be the G4, and the VS999 could be a bigger, better LG phone with a 3k screen that’s either exclusive to Verizon or something that we haven’t seen for other carriers yet. Or, the simplest answer, the VS999 could be completely fake and the VS986 is all we should be worrying about.

Anyone want to take a guess at what’s what with these model numbers before LG makes things official?

LG G4 gets a step closer to launch thanks to WiFi certification

Specifically, the certification was for the codenamed LG-H811, which may not be the regular G4 but a variant such as the G4 Stylus. The certification does add that this device runs Lollipop, so it could be LG’s flagship after all.

Mobile World Congress is set to happen next month from March 2 to March 5. It should not be long before we can expect some announcements of flagships.

Future of LG G4 and stylus less clear after latest leak

lg_g4_stylus_trademark

As we look down the road in 2015 for a successor to LG’s LG G3 smartphone, one of the rumors that surfaced was that LG may equip their flagship device with a stylus to be able to compete a little more directly against the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. That rumor was fueled by information about a trademark filing for the “G Pen” name. A new trademark filing for “G4 Stylus” could be a sign that LG is actually planning to equip a mid-range device with a stylus instead of their flagship device.

LG did not get much press here in the U.S. for their stylus equipped smartphone as it launched in foreign markets. Nevertheless, the company is present in the stylus-equipped smartphone space with the LG G3 Stylus which was a 5.5-inch device carrying a 1.3GHz processor, only 960 x 540 resolution on the screen, and 1GB of RAM. Despite sharing the G3 moniker it its name, the G3 Stylus was definitely not a high-end device with those specs.

Along with the new trademark application, a leaked document appears to show an entry for a stylus equipped pen that is somehow related to the LG G4 even if only in name. In the screen capture, a listing appears for an LG device with model number H810 and project number P1 which is believed to be the AT&T variant of the G4. The same listing shows a project with codename “P1s” which could signify the addition of a stylus to project P1. However, the resolution for the P1s is only 1280 x 720 and the model number is listed in a different series, H63x. Except for the P1 part being the same, this seems to be more consistent with the LG G3 and LG G3 Stylus model where the stylus equipped smartphone was a mid-range unit.

The question now is whether the previous trademark entry for the G Pen was in reference to new equipment for an LG flagship device or is LG just trying to protect their investment in a line of stylus-equipped smartphones that fall in the middle tier in terms of specs.
