LG’s upcoming G4 lets you take better photos in the dark

LG’s flagship smartphone has improved every year, other than the custom UX apps that we’ve found to be “unnecessary” and “redundant.” A new tease of the G4 and its UX 4.0 software shows more of the same on both fronts. The company has improved its camera with a low-light f/1.8 lens that one-ups Samsung’s flagship by a tick, though the G4 will be hard-pressed to better the Galaxy S6’s image quality. There’s also a new “Quick Shot” capability that lets you snap a photo with the screen locked by double-tapping the back button, along with a manual mode for finer shooting control.

On the other hand, LG also trumpeted several superfluous-looking features in its new UX 4.0 Android flavor, even while Samsung is de-emphasizing such apps. Smart Notice, for instance, “analyses a user’s daily routine and… combines this information with (his) lifestyle habits” — exactly like Google Now does. Other features include photo album organization by location, custom contact ringtones and photos, and a revised Smart Bulletin that collects and displays info from your schedule, music, weather and other apps. Some of these may be useful, but hopefully, LG will make it easy to deactivate any UX 4.0 apps you don’t want.

The G4 is rumored to pack a 5.5-inch QuadHD display like the G3, and you can probably expect top-of-the line specs across the board. It may also have a leather or faux-leather back, à la recent Samsung models like the Galaxy Note 4. Until it arrives on April 28th, you can read the tea leaves with the videos below.

LG have released a teaser video to warm the Android community up to the LG G4 handset which will launch at their event on April 28th.

Not too much is revealed about the next flagship device from LG, except that it will have a pretty stunning f/1.8 aperture lens. However, recent leaks show this could be coupled with a 16-Megapixel camera, 2k display, and six-core Snapdragon 808 CPU.

Guess we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out.

HTC USA’s new ad with Robinson Cano involves smashing the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 [Video]

cano

HTC USA has marked the official arrival of the baseball season by posting a new commercial with its recently acquired star campaigner Robinson Canó who plays for the Seattle Mariners in the MLB.

While it’s completely different from the mildly crazy Robert Downey Jr ads we’ve seen recently, it’s certainly not better. The ad involves Canó taking his position with a baseball bat in his hand and literally smashing the iPhone 6, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 into pieces.

This is followed by the following text – “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause. And sometimes you just have to challenge convention. Let’s play ball.”

While we don’t mind the good natured ribbing against industry rival, it seems a little too extreme to be smashing phones to get your point across. What do you think about this new ad? Sound off below.

LG takes a swing at Samsung over the Galaxy S6 Egde bending

It was only a matter of time before the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge bending became a thing, and it seems LG are taking the opportunity for a bit of promotion for their LG G Flex 2. Both the G Flex 2 and S6 Edge employ a curved screen but in different ways.

LG have clearly gone with the idea that because the S6 Edge has curved edges on the screen it will bend a lot easier than the curved screen found on their device. Samsung have already conducted their own bend test to try and repel the reports, but LG clearly saw a marketing opportunity and took it.

No doubt the reason the S6 Edge withstands less pressure than other devices isn’t solely attributable to the edges of the screen themselves, but you can’t blame LG for seizing the moment.

LG debuts LG UX 4.0 which will launch on the LG G4

LG must be getting impatient about their G4, because they keep unveiling things, besides the device. The other day, LG decided to announce their newest 5.5 inch QHD LCD display panel that is expected to go on their upcoming LG G4. Yesteday LG has announced another feature on their next upcoming flagship device.

LG officially announced ‘LG UX 4.0′, which will make its debut on the highly-anticipated G4, and trickle down the ladder to other devices in the future. ‘LG UX 4.0′ is made to be simple. intuitive, and made for everyone. Other iterations of the UX brought us Q memo/Q slide, knock on, and gesture shot, but LG has added more on top of the bundle. A video of the UX can be seen below. Unfortunately it is in Korean.

The latest UX will come with a new “Quick Shot” feature which will allow the user to bring up the camera with two easy presses of the bottom volume button. This is a nice addition, as the rear-facing buttons are very convenient, especially now that the camera can be launched by two presses. It will also ship with an ‘expert mode’, which will most likely take advantage of Android Lollipop’s ability to manually expose images along with a RAW image format. For more of the features in-depth, check out the official press release here.

Aside from a few other features, LG’s newest UX is expected to make a very customized and smart experience to the user. Aesthetically, it seems as not much as changed, aside from a few tweaks to the icon to better suit Android Lollipop. Obviously, nothing is final until the LG G4 is debuted on April 28th.

LG teases new user interface (UX 4.0) on upcoming G4

LG_G3_Back_Slanted_LG_Logo_02_TA

LG continues trying to drum up some buzz for their upcoming G4 smartphone since Samsung will get a 2 month head start with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Today, they released a video teasing the new user interface, dubbed UX 4.0. LG claims it will be “human-centered” as in it will have the ability to anticipate the needs of the user.

This video will first show you some of the things they offered in UX 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, such as Knock Code and Gesture Shot. Then they highlight some of the new features in 4.0 such as Quick Shot, which gives you the ability to capture a photo while the phone is locked by pressing the volume button twice. They have also included an Expert mode within the Camera app.

A new feature called Smart Alert tells you that the weather is not only sunny, but it might be a great day for running or biking. There’s something called Smart Board that gathers information from your calendar, music, and health into a single screen. The new Calendar app allows you to add entries from social networks like Facebook.

None of it blows me away. Check out the video below and let me know what you think…..

Video: LG teases software features coming to the G4

Following the announcement of the display panel that will equip the G4, LG is now revealing another crucial part of the G4 experience: the software.

In a Korean language video, LG is teasing the new UX4, which resembles the previous iteration of LG’s Android skin, but adds a couple of new features.

Aesthetically, LG UX 4.0 seems to be flatter, more simple, and more abstract than UX 3.0 (running on G3, G Flex 2, and others), with the bright color scheme borrowing from Google’s Material design guidelines.

Smart Bulletin, launched on the G3, is making a return, consolidating LG’s various proprietary features, like Smart Settings, LG Health, a Calendar app, Smart Tips and more. Like before, Smart Bulletin will be available with a swipe from the homescreen, similar to Google Now on the default Google launcher.

Instead of having to long-press the volume down button on the back to launch the camera, you will be able to double tap it. That’s a similar to the way the camera can be launched on the Galaxy S6, but it remains to be seen whether LG has been able to reduce the time needed to launch the camera, as the long-press feature was quite slow on the G3.

Android Authority this week

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge-30

Android fans, this was a bit quiet on the Android front (unless you count the outrageous April Fools’ pranks that made the rounds), but Google made it up to us with some interesting developments on the Chrome OS front. Google and its partners launched cheap new Chromebooks, a new Chromebase, the Chromebit TV dongle, and a tool that allows just about any Android app to run on Chrome OS. In other news, we heard rumors about the Xperia Z4 and the LG G4, Lollipop updates hit several popular devices, Google updated some of its apps, HTC introduced the One E9+ and the One M8+, and OnePlus finally released its new Oxygen OS.
