The leather back could make the G4 more expensive than we thought

lg g4 leather

That “vegetable-tanned” leather back on the G4? It’s costing LG extra, and the company is passing the buck to customers.

Ahead of the official unveiling (if there will be any veils left to lift by then) on April 28, the LG G4 went up for pre-order in its native South Korea. The G4 is sold by SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+, even if the device won’t be available in stores for customers to try out until next week, with actual availability rumored to start on April 29.

Interestingly, the G4 is priced by Korean carriers at a slightly higher price than we expected. Korea Telecom is offering the device for the equivalent of $825, compared to $795 for the Galaxy S6 32GB, but lower than Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB ($910).

This isn’t actually the official unlocked price, but an LG representative confirmed to ETNews that “it will stay in that range.” According to Korea Times, LG’s pricing strategy is actually targeting the Galaxy S6 Edge, as the company sees the vegetable-tanned leather back as a luxury offering worth paying a premium for:

“Among the various tanning methods, vegetable tanning is the most traditional and the most recognizable. It is the only form of tanning that is able to give leather unique characteristics, retaining the natural flaws and markings. That’s why only a few luxurious brands such as Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton applied the tanning technology to very high-level products.”

LG confirmed that, carrier subsidies not considered, the G4 will be pricier than previous models.

The G3 launched last year at a rather high price (900,000 won/$880) in South Korea, but the device was more affordable in the rest of the world. In the US, the 5.5-inch device could be had for as little as $450 unlocked last fall. That, and the fact LG has minimized the hype by releasing details ahead of the launch, made us think the G4 could go a bit down range.

It remains to be seen whether LG will market the leather-backed G4 as an Edge-competitor worldwide or just in in South Korea. It will be interesting to follow how the price changes in time; the Galaxy S6 shapes up to be a sales hit, which may force LG to lower the G4’s price fast and hard. Then there’s the “more premium” device that LG said will come later this year, which could put more pressure on the G4’s price.

Stay tuned for the official details coming April 28.

Spotted in Iran: A dual-SIM LG G4 in plastic and leather variants

There’s a lot going on in Iran right now, so it’s probably the last place we expected to get our first real-life photos of the new LG G4, and a dual-SIM LG G4 at that. In a series of photos posted next to tissue and juice boxes for scale, we get a glimpse of both the plastic and leather back covers of the next LG flagship. In particular, you will notice that the plastic version’s pattern is different to the LG G3‘s and that the leather version is looking very much like real, supple leather. You can also see that this is definitely the dual-SIM version by the SIM switching soft key found alongside the other usual Android soft keys. This will come as no surprise as the LG G4 is expected to be available in almost all markets globally.

The LG G4 is due for announcement on April 28th and while its specs aren’t as mouthwatering as they could be, there’s still a whole lot of phone to enjoy. The LG G4 is rumoured to be powered with a Snapdragon 808, with 3GB RAM and a new f1.8, 16MP camera and has significantly upgraded the front camera to 8MP. We’re interested to see if LG has done anything specific with the Android Lollipop running on the LG G4, so we’ll have to wait a few days to find out.

US Cellular updating their LG G3 to Lollipop

For some odd reason it feels like manufacturers and carriers are getting things done when it comes to the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. I seem to remember a time where I wasn’t so busy every week telling you all that an update was coming out for a device somewhere. Not that I am complaining though. It is a good thing for all parties involved. Adding its self to the list of Lollipop sporting devices, is the LG G3 on US Cellular.

The update users will be looking for is version US99020a and it has already started rolling out. To get your hands on it you will want to look for a notification to pop up at the top of the screen. You can also head to Settings > About Device > About Phone > Update Center> Software Updates. If you go that route, make sure you have well over 505 battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time to download and install the 1.2GB update file. You also have the option to update the device using your computer if you would rather go that route. LG offers the LG Mobile Support Tool, which is similar to Samsung Kies. It is a simple install of drivers, the software and connecting your device. To go that route you will want to visit the manual update support page for the LG G3.

Will the LG G4 sell as well as the LG G3? Korean analysts says “No”

We’ve got just over a week before LG officially announces the LG G4, but the question is already being asked: Will the LG G4 sell as well as the LG G3? According to Korean analyst, IBK Investment & Securities, the answer is “No”. This answer is largely driven by the resurgent success of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge who says will create market conditions which “will not be favorable” for the LG G4, who LG is hoping will sell the same number of handsets as the LG G3, estimated to be around 10 million.

Another source has said that the recent rumours that the LG G4 will be powered be a Snapdragon 808 instead of a Snapdragon 810 will be an issue if true as it is losing “a selling point for LG”. And as you can imagine, anything that LG can claw back from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is going to be an important differentiator come April 28th, but we’ll have to see if LG has anything else hidden up their sleeves.

LG teases the new Quad HD display for the LG G4 ahead of announcement on April 28th

There are a spate of flagship devices that are due for launch in the month of April, but none more anticipated than LG‘s latest, the LG G4. Continuing its steady stream of teaser trailers of the device’s features, a video detailing the Quad HD display for the LG G4 has been released today. None of it is particularly surprising seeing as LG announced the new display a few weeks ago, but it’s nice to finally put a name to the display. Chief among the displays improved abilities is a 25% increase in brightness and 20% increase in colour range when compared with the LG G3‘s Quad HD display, which was no slouch itself.

LG looks like it’s going to build on the solid success of the LG G3 with the LG G4 and has changed a few things up, as shown in a recent leak, in particular the fact that the LG G4 will be available in several forms of leather. We’re not expecting anything groundbreaking from the hardware of the device – at least not compared to the other flagships – which should make the LG G4 a strong performer in 2015.

Verizon’s LG G3 gets its Android 5.0 update

The Verizon Wireless version of the LG G3 finally is receiving an update to Android Lollipop, according to a press release on its site.

In an attached PDF, Verizon has documented the features of the update. These include: material design, an improved runtime, lock screen notifications, the ability to hide sensitive notifications, smart lock, searchable settings, floating action buttons, and screen pinning.

With lock screen notifications, notifications can appear on the lock screen based on user settings. This allows up to two notifications to be displayed. A numeric indicator pops up for any additional ones. Also, notifications can be swiped to display the next one without needing to unlock the phone. The user can even set all or some of the, to be hidden. When “Show all notifications” is chosen, pressing the indicator or swiping the list downward will it.

Smart Lock provides two ways to unlock the G3. The first is through face recognition, and the second is through a simple swipe in place of a security lock when the device is connected to a “Trusted” Bluetooth device added via Smart Lock settings.

The floating action buttons setting adds buttons to some of the main apps (Clock, Contacts, Email, Messaging, and Music) that involve adding new items.

One of the last features is screen pinning, found on the Recent apps screen. This locks the G3 to just a single app, preventing the launching of others until it is unpinned through touching and holding the back and recent buttons at the same time. Only the back button will work until the app is unpinned.

Oops: LG may have revealed the LG G4 and its leather back cover a little earlier than expected

Good old @evleaks. Despite being retired, leaker @evleaks, or Evan Blass as he goes by IRL, has managed to uncover a website that appears to detail the yet-to-be-announced LG G4. This is our first look at the finished product, and our first look at the new leather back that LG had teased in its last trailer. Unlike the faux-leather backs of the Samsung devices of old, it looks like the LG G4’s leather will be genuine leather, though hopefully this won’t impact the device’s pricing.

LG G4The LG G4 appears to be taking a few pages out of the Motorola Moto X’s book as LG will be offering the LG G4 in a variety of colours of leather, as well as what looks like the standard plastic ‘metallic’ finishes that were available on the LG G3 in case leather isn’t your thing. The leather finishes possible include (see image below for exact colour):

  • Leather Brown
  • Leather Black
  • Leather Red
  • Leather Skyblue
  • Leather Beige
  • Leather Yellow

LG G4Unsurprisingly, the few pages that are LG G4 specific focus on the new camera on the device, revealed to be a f1.8 lens. In fact, it appears the website might not actually be finished as most of the information on the specifications page appears to be for the LG G3 and not the LG G4, unless we missed something and the new LG flagship is going to ship with a Snapdragon 801 and Android 4.4.2 – we’re expecting a Snapdragon 810 and Android 5.0, for the record. It’s possible that LG will take this page down when it gets wind that people know about it, but then again, the cat’s out of the bag.

HTC USA’s new ad with Robinson Cano involves smashing the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 [Video]

cano

HTC USA has marked the official arrival of the baseball season by posting a new commercial with its recently acquired star campaigner Robinson Canó who plays for the Seattle Mariners in the MLB.

While it’s completely different from the mildly crazy Robert Downey Jr ads we’ve seen recently, it’s certainly not better. The ad involves Canó taking his position with a baseball bat in his hand and literally smashing the iPhone 6, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 into pieces.

This is followed by the following text – “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause. And sometimes you just have to challenge convention. Let’s play ball.”

While we don’t mind the good natured ribbing against industry rival, it seems a little too extreme to be smashing phones to get your point across. What do you think about this new ad? Sound off below.
