LG G3 vs. HTC One M8 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5

LG-G3-vs-One-M8-vs-Galaxy-S5Today, LG debuted it’s newest newest global flagship phone, the G3. The Android smartphone is a followup to the LG G2 from 2013, which had an unique design which moved the power/lock button and volume controls from the sides of the phone to the back of the device, below the camera lens. The G3 sports that same design, but with a more polished look, complete with a brushed metallic body (available in five colors) and a more mature-looking Android operating system.

The G3 packs the high-end specs we’ve come to expect in premium phones, and it’s perfectly poised to go up against it’s top Android competitors, the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5.

With similar eye-popping screens, powerful processors, and capable camera lenses available on all three devices, deciding on which one is best for you really comes down to the extra features, design, and personal brand preference. The LG G3 is no slouch when it comes to extras, with the Knock Code security feature, a front-facing camera designed specifically for selfies, and a high-capacity battery.

Check out the chart below to see how the phone’s specs stacks up against its competition, and let us know in the comments below which phone comes out on top for you.

This feature reportedly comes via a recent update, and it’s still in the process of rolling out to all G3 handsets. LG’s G3 A is a stripped-down model of its flagship smartphone

LG has to be pleased by the overall reception to the G3, from press and consumers alike. That said, perhaps in an effort to keep the momentum going, the electronics company just launched the G3 A, a smaller and slightly lower-specced version of its popular flagship handset, the G3. This isn’t to say LG’s new, 5.2-inch G3 A, which will be available in South Korea through SK telecom, is by any means a dud, as it does sport some pretty good features of its own. The smartphone comes with a 1080p screen, a Snapdragon 800 processor (2.6GHz) alongside 2GB RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, Android KitKat and, best of all, the same 13-megapixel camera found on the G3. Of course, introducing a different model to the G3 family is nothing novel to LG — the company announced the G3 Beat recently and, apparently, there’s also a G3 Stylus on the way.

AT&T will sell the G Pad 7.0 for 99 cents — if you buy an LG phone to go with it

AT&T will sell the G Pad 7.0 for 99 cents -- if you buy an LG phone to go with it

We can’t say for sure how great a tablet the new LG G Pad 7.0 is — we haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. But if you were already planning on buying the G3 smartphone on AT&T, you may as well pick up the G Pad too: Starting on Friday, Ma Bell will throw in the tablet for just 99 cents extra. Now, before you get too excited, there is of course a catch. To qualify for that insane 99-cent price, you’ll have to purchase either the G3, G Flex or last-generation G2, and you’ll need to either sign a new two-year service agreement or renew your contract through AT&T’s “Next” early upgrade plan. Again, you’d have to really want one of these phones — and you’d also have to really like AT&T.

If perchance you don’t want one of those handsets, you can also get the tablet for $150 with a two-year contract, or for $12.50 a month for 20 months, with no money down up front. You could even buy it contract-free for $250, but at that point, we’d encourage you to take a closer look at the specs. For $250, you get an Android KitKat tablet with a 1,280 x 800 screen, 5-megapixel camera and quad-core processor. That’s not bad, per se, but for the same price or less you can find similar alternatives, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0; that’s going for $170 (down from $200), with mostly the same specs, save for a lower-res camera. That’s not to say you shouldn’t buy the G Pad — just that you should do your homework first.

How to instantly speed up the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 & LG G3

android-for-wallpaper-8

Hidden deep in Android, following the KitKat 4.4 release, is a feature that can be enabled to instantly speed up your Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, LG G3, and pretty much any Android device that supports KitKat.

It’s called ART, and that stands for Android Runtime, which is the successor to the Dalvik system currently used since Android’s inception. ART uses what Google calls an ‘ahead of time’ compiler as opposed to Dalvik’s ‘just in time’. Dalvik worked by converting each app on the fly when it was called upon to be launched. ART on the other hand converts it during installation, ultimately resulting in a larger app file size, but meaning the app launches pretty much instantly. The result? The device is quicker and battery life is improved.

So how do you do it?

The new ART runtime system isn’t enabled by default in Android 4.4 KitKat so you’ll need to head into the hidden ‘Developer Options’ menu in the Settings to access it. To enable the hidden ‘Developer Options’ go into Settings > About Phone > Build number and Tap the build number 7 times. Once there, go to ‘Select Runtime’ and change the selection from ‘Dalvik’ to ‘ART’.

You’ll have to reboot after changing the setting and you may have to wait a few minutes whilst ART does its thing in the background converting all your installed apps, but once the progress meter is done you’re good to go.

Whilst ART provides increased speed and improved battery life, you may find that not all Apps are 100% compatible; however since Android L has been released with the developer preview, the chances of finding an incompatible App has greatly reduced.

Drop us a comment and let us know if you’ve noticed a speed improvement on your device.
