A white Samsung Galaxy Alpha makes a leaked Appearance

white Samsung Galaxy AlphaJust because @evleaks is now out of the game, doesn’t mean the leaks will stop. Today we get a look at a white Samsung Galaxy Alpha, the phone hotly rumoured to be Samsung’s direct competitor to the equally rumoured Apple iPhone 6. So similarly configured is the Galaxy Alpha to the iPhone 6 that it will incorporate a nano-SIM slot, have no expandable memory slot and have a similarly sized 4.8-inch display (the iPhone 6′s display is rumoured to be 4.7-inches).

white Samsung Galaxy AlphaCompared to previous leaked photos, there isn’t much new in these leaked pictures except that we get a better look at the sides of the Galaxy Alpha. Besides the fact that it definitely looks like the Galaxy Alpha will incorporate a aluminium band around its sides, the general design of that band seems very iPhone-ish. Maybe that’s just me, but the sharp edges and flat surfaces seem very similar to the design ideas of an Apple iPhone. Whatever the design, it does look like the Galaxy Alpha is raring to go and we’re anticipating its release to come on August 13th.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha display seemingly confirmed to be 720p

Samsung Galaxy AlphaFor some time we believed that the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, or what we thought to be called the Galaxy F, was going to be a premium device offering something a bit more special than what the Galaxy S5 is. After a series of leaked photos of the device came out, it seems almost certain that this is not the case, and that the Galaxy Alpha is in fact Samsung‘s answer to the imminent release of the Apple iPhone 6. This much is evidenced by the 4.8-inch display, which today has allegedly been confirmed to be 720p i.e. with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

This information was gleaned from Samsung’s own developer console, which seems to confirm that the device will have a 720p display and that it will indeed be called the Samsung Galaxy Alpha (not the Galaxy F or Galaxy S5 Alpha). The expected hardware of the Galaxy Alpha include a fingerprint scanner, a nano SIM slot, 32GB storage without expandable memory, and is expected to have an aluminium edge all around the sides of the device. It is supposedly going to be released in August this year.

Why the Apple iPhone 6 may cause other phones to get slightly more Expensive

Apple iPhone 6It’s probably somewhat of an understatement to say that many of us in the Android community couldn’t care less about what happens to Apple‘s latest rumoured device, the Apple iPhone 6. Unfortunately, its existence might have an undesired side-effect on the rest of the smartphone market, and it seems to stem from the fact that Apple has allegedly placed an order of 70-80 million iPhone 6s to be made in anticipation of its launch. While that in itself isn’t the issue, it’s the effect that it’s going to have on the contracted manufacturers that is going to affect many corners of the Android world.

Media in China have allegedly said to expect a 5-10% price increase on flagship devices due to Apple’s large order. The increase in price is reportedly going to be caused by contracted manufacturers needing to make iPhone 6′s with the limited resources they have; consider Foxconn, which manufacturers parts for not only Apple, but Sony, Motorola, Nokia and many others. Is seems this would inevitably push supply of these other devices lower, resulting in a price increase. Clearly I’m no economist, but Apple’s huge order looks like it is definitely going to have some kind of effect on the smartphone market, but it’s unclear whether manufacturers are happy to bear the brunt themselves or pass the costs onto buyers.

What do you think about the possibility of a price hike due to the manufacture of the Apple iPhone 6? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Apple Launching 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 After 4.7-Inch Version to Avoid Competition Between Two Models

Apple will launch the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 several months after the 4.7-inch version to avoid competition between the two models, according to a new report from DigiTimes citing supply chain sources.

The different timetables have been set as Apple does not want to repeat the mistake it made in 2013 when it launched the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c simultaneously, said the sources.

Prior rumors have pointed out that production issues with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would cause Apple to delay its release a few months after 4.7-inch version, however this newest report claims that isn’t the case for the launch delay. A report from Bloomberg last month suggested that Apple would be launching both versions of the iPhone 6 simultaneously, noting that the company had begun preparing the 4.7-inch model and 5.5-inch for manufacturing.

Apple is expected to unveil the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 at a September event, although a report yesterday noted that the company is unsure as to whether it will show off the 5.5-inch version at the same time. The company is said to be preparing between 70 and 80 million iPhone 6 units to meet anticipated customer demand, as the larger screen could cause a massive spike in upgrades from both iPhone upgraders and those switching from Android.

In addition to a larger screen, the iPhone 6 is expected to feature a faster A8 processor, a thinner profile, an improved camera, and Apple’s new iOS 8 mobile operating system.

A new Android hero has emerged: Conan O’Brien mocks the iPhone 6 in his Monologue

Conan O'Brien mocks the iPhone 6Conan O’Brien is a funny man. And now, he also has the respect of the whole Android community after a joke he made on his show last night. There are plenty of rumours floating around about Apple‘s next smartphone, the iPhone 6, which is expected to be slightly bigger, but more of the usual, so when you hear that Conan O’Brien mocks the iPhone 6, you know its public knowledge that Apple’s devices lack a certain level of innovation. Check out the monologue below (the good bit starts at 1:33):

While it’s all well and good to be joke about the iPhone, they do still pose a sizeable threat to the Android platform. Their market share in the world has dipped significantly since the Android boom (which is still booming), reportedly less than 20%, but underestimating them would be a mistake, especially as the Cupertino-based company looks for a way to capitalize and infiltrate Android-held markets and hold onto their fiercely loyal fan base. Although, we can always laugh at their perceived lack of innovation, right Conan?

What do you think of Conan O’Brien’s joke about the new iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

4.7-Inch iPhone 6 Set to Begin Mass Production This Month, 5.5-Inch in August

Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn is set to begin mass production on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 this month, according to local media cited by Reuters. The larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will begin production a month later, in August.

Mass production of a 4.7-inch successor to the wildly popular iPhone 5 series of smartphones will begin during the third week of July, Taiwan’s Economic Daily News said, without citing sources. Production of a 5.5-inch version will begin during the second week of August, it said.

Foxconn is also set to hire around 100,000 additional workers to help meet future demand for the device, according to a Chinese state-run news agency. Fellow Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron is also ramping up hiring, recruiting over 10,000 for its own facilities to help manufacture the iPhone. Additionally, it was reported last week that Foxconn was planning on deploying 10,000 robots to help employees with less intensive tasks like tightening screws.

Apple is widely expected to announce the iPhone 6 in early September, with a release coming a couple weeks later in late September. While it’s unclear whether both the 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models will launch at the same time, the one-month delay in mass production could mean that the 5.5-inch is either available in lower quantities at first or will be announced at the same time as the 4.7-inch model and launch shortly after. Previously, it’s been rumored the 5.5-inch model had been experiencing production issues.

Other than larger displays, the iPhone 6 is expected to include a thinner, iPod touch-like design, an A8 processor, and an improved camera, potentially measuring 13 megapixels. The larger model is expected to come with a $100 price increase, optical image stabilization and greater storage capability.

Wico and Goophone Beat Apple to Market with Android-Based iPhone 6 Clones

Months before Apple is expected to release its next-generation iPhone, functional iPhone 6 clones already are starting to appear in China’s mobile phone marketplace. One of the first clones, the Wico i6, is profiled by 86DIGI (via Nowhereelse.fr) in a two-part hands-on video.

(Note: Contains fairly loud soundtrack of The Carpenters’ “Top of the World”)
Like most clones, the Wico i6 is quite detailed for a fake, with authentic-looking FCC labeling and the characteristic Apple branding. The phone also closely mimics the rumored styling of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 with a thin chassis that houses a side-mounted power button and elongated volume buttons.

Wico isn’t the only clone maker ready to enter the mobile phone black market, however. Chinese clone maker Goophone has also announced (via GizChina.com) that it is preparing the Goophone i6 for release in August, ahead of Apple’s expected September iPhone launch.

goophone_i6
The GooPhone also borrows its styling from the rumored schematics of the iPhone 6 and pairs it with a quad-core Mediatek MT6582 chipset, 1GB RAM and 13 megapixel rear camera. Similar to previous Goophone clones, the i6 model is powered by the Android operating system.

Report Claims iPhone 6 Will Feature New Dynamic Haptic Feedback Technology

Apple’s iPhone 6 will feature a new haptic feedback technology when it ships later this year, claims Chinese mobile phone information site Laoyaoba (Google Translate, via GforGames).

iphone6render iPhone 6 render by Tomas Moyano and Nicolas Aichino
Citing inside sources, the report claims that Apple will ship the iPhone 6 with a tactile feedback linear motor, which can allow the user to feel subtle vibrations depending on different app scenarios and even on specific areas of the touch screen. The report also notes that this new haptic feedback motor will cost twice or three times as much as the $0.60 vibration motor found in the iPhone 5s.

Apple has expressed interest in haptic technology in the past, filing a patent on the subject in 2009. That patent discussed the idea of allowing users to “feel out” the different elements on a web page with haptic feedback, noting that the lack of such a technology was a disadvantage for the iPhone’s multi-touch screen.

The iPhone 6 is expected to launch in September in two sizes of 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. Aside from a larger display, the device is also expected to include a faster quad-core 64-bit A8 processor, and a thinner design with curved edges like that of the fifth-generation iPod touch. Both iPhone 6 models are also expected to receive an improved camera, which will come in the form of optical image stabilization for the 5.5-inch model and a new lens module for the smaller 4.7-inch phone.

iPhone 6 May See Only Modest Battery Capacity Boost as Apple Pursues Ultra-Slim Designs

iphone_5s_batteryA recent survey suggests consumers are looking forward to improved battery life as well as a bigger screen in the iPhone 6. But according to Chinese media reports (via GforGames), Apple’s next-generation iPhone may disappoint with a lower-than-expected battery capacity that will provide only a slight boost from the battery used in the iPhone 5s.

Chinese media sources claim the 4.7-inch version of the iPhone 6 will ship with a battery between 1,800 and 1,900 mAh, while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will include a 2,500 mAh battery. Though larger than the 1,560 mAh battery in the iPhone 5s, these modest capacity increases place Apple behind competitors with similar sized handsets, and leave some wondering if Apple is keeping the battery too small in order to design an ultra-slim device. The larger screens on the iPhone 6 will naturally create more volume for larger batteries while maintaining a slim profile, but the displays themselves are likely to require increased battery to support the higher resolutions.

Of course, these rumored battery capacities for the iPhone provide only part of the equation, with Apple’s tight software-hardware integration also contributing to overall battery life. It is also possible that real-world battery life may be better than these speculated hardware specs imply due to underlying performance improvements added to iOS 8.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 during a September media event. The company may debut both a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch version that could feature a faster A8 processor, an upgraded Touch ID scanner and an improved camera with some form of image stabilization.
