Xiaomi_Mi_Note_Official_01

Got a device with specs two years old? Specifically, are those devices the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6? Good news if you live in China, Xiaomi is working on starting up a trade-in system that will allow you to pitch your lemons Apples for shiny, new Mi Notes or Mi Note Pros.

If all goes according to plan, Xiaomi would like to take your iPhone 5s and replace it with a Mi Note. If you have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you can receive a Mi Note Pro. Xiaomi is claiming that they’ll take any functioning iPhone 5s/6/6P in any condition for this trade-in program.

#Bendgate comes to Android: Sony Xperia Z3 bends while in pocket

In the year just passed, there was one controversy that had Apple owners crying out and Android owners sniggering in secret: #BendGate. The controversy surrounded the iPhone 6 Plus and its ability (read: not a feature) to warp while in your pocket. While the official reports were minimal, the social media world took the controversy […]

Dropbox’s iOS 8 app adds support for Touch ID

Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s recent refresh of OneDrive, Dropbox has now made its iOS app compatible with Apple’s fingerprint-scanning technology, Touch ID, as well. You’ll need iOS 8 in order for the feature to work, but chances are you’re already running the latest and greatest software from Apple anyway. Aside from adding the ability to unlock the application by way of Touch ID, Dropbox also updated it to support the bigger screens of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — something that owners of Apple’s newest smartphones will definitely appreciate. Now someone tell Google to hurry and do the same for Drive.

Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: The battle of the phablets

Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 14.44.43

So Google have now announced their new flagship device, we can finally see their response to Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. For most, the decision on which device to get is simple as it is the platform that dictates the buying decision, but for some, platform doesn’t play as an important part in the decision.

We’ve stacked up the Nexus 6 against the iPhone 6 Plus in a pure spec comparison to see how the two compare, since the size profile of the two devices are very similar.

One of the main observations of the Nexus 6 is the sheer size of the screen, but despite it having a larger screen than the iPhone 6 Plus, the height of the two devices is almost identical – to give some perspective on the size of the Nexus 6.

The Nexus 6 wins on pretty much every other front, having more RAM, higher clocked CPU, higher PPI, better rear camera, and bigger battery.

So if you’re in the market for a phablet-sized device and don’t mind about OS, then there’s a clear winner here, and that’s the Nexus 6. But even if you’re set on iOS and you’re just here to check out the competition, with the sheer specs of the Nexus 6, combined with Android Lollipop, the competition is looking far more appealing than it was back in the days of Gingerbread, which is probably the last time iOS users dabbled in Android when it was a new platform.

So avid Android users and curious iOS users, the Nexus 6 is the device to buy if you’re in the market for a plus-sized device and pre-orders go live tomorrow, 17th October.

Let us know in the comments if you’re buying the Nexus 6, and if so what device you’re coming from.

Nexus 6 Watch 2014: Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus size comparison shows there’s not much in it

Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus size comparisonThe announcement of the Nexus 6 could be just around the corner, but that’s not going to stop the leaks getting out in the meantime. Latest on the list of leaks is the above image courtesy of the newly named Total Tech Media (renamed from TK Tech News) which allegedly shows a Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus size comparison with the two literally and figuratively titanic devices next to each other. What you will notice is that while the Motorola-manufactured Nexus 6 is probably just a hair longer and wider than the iPhone 6 Plus, it’s still able to fit its much larger 5.9-inch display (vs 5.5-inch display) into its body much more comfortably with thinner bezels on all sides.

Apart from the obvious size comparison, we can see the dual speakers that have been rumoured for the Nexus 6 which in turn looks very much like the front face of the Moto X 2014. On the inside though, the Nexus 6 is a completely different beast, suspected to boast a Snapdragon 805 clocked at 2.7 GHz, 3GB RAM and that 5.9-inch display will give the device a Quad HD resolution. Hopefully we won’t have long to wait before the device is announced, or at the very least its bigger brother, the Nexus 9, as we can’t wait to see what it and Android L can do.

What do you think about the Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus size comparison? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Unbox Therapy sets the record straight by bending iPhone 6 Plus and tries a Moto X 2014 to compare

moto x 2014If you have been following tech news this week, you might have heard about ‘Bendgate’ which is the alleged weakness of the newly released iPhone 6 Plus to resist fairly ordinary handling and bend quite severely. And not that good type of bending demonstrated by the LG G Flex; this looks to be a design flaw in the iPhone 6 Plus and looks like it will undermine Apple’s first attempt at a phablet device. The Apple faithful have been putting on a brave face and claiming that this is either untrue or those who have been testing it have been using excessive force. YouTuber Unbox Therapy has gone on record today to prove exactly how easy this bending occurs, and promptly tries to bend the new Moto X 2014 to show exactly how a normal phone should work.

Suffice to say that Apple probably needs to go back to the drawing board and try again. Quite a contrast to the Moto X 2014, which held its own in this brief test, and yet another feather in Motorola’s cap for making another robust device. The Moto X 2014, which was announced during IFA 2014 just a few weeks ago, combines much of the latest tech available to smartphones including a 5.2-inch display powered by a Snapdragon 801 processor. While that might not be the absolute newest processor available, the original Moto X proved Motorola can do a lot with a supposedly “underpowered” processor, let alone one of the best available. We can’t wait to see more of them in action.

What do you think about the Moto X 2014 and this whole ‘Bendgate’ ordeal? Let us know your thoughts.

The Biggest iPhone Has Arrived

New Picture (3)

The biggest iPhone ever has arrived, and it’s called the iPhone 6 Plus. Showcasing a 5.5-inch screen, this is Apple’s attempt at targeting smartphone users who prefer larger devices, as well as those who are fans of the phablet, which is that famous cross between a smartphone and tablet. Samsung had released a 5.5-inch smartphone when they launched the Galaxy Note 2, so it really is about time Apple got in on that market.

Up until now, the iPhone had only come in two sizes: 3.5 inches and 4 inches. And this is why the 5.5-inch smartphone is now making headlines. To learn more about the 6 Plus, continue reading.

Screen Size Upgrade
New Picture (2)

Aside from the obvious size difference between the two newest iPhone models, there are some other notable differences, the most obvious of which is the much larger 5.5-inch screen size found on the iPhone 6 Plus. If you’re a fan of phablets and the many larger Android phones that have been on the market, and if you’ve been thinking about switching to Apple, this would be the best choice. Plus, with one of the many SIM-Only plans available, which you can learn about at http://www.simonlyexpert.co.uk/iphone-sim-only/, you can find this otherwise expensive phone surprisingly affordable.

Aside from size, what else does the iPhone 6 Plus’ screen have to offer? Well, to start, it gives you full HD clarity on a 1920×1080, 440PPi display. On top of that, the dual domain pixels in this new model, combined with the LED backlight, provide a much wider viewing angle.

The 1300:1 contrast ratio and IPS panel result in brighter, more vibrant colours than on older iPhones. And Apple has also added an oleophobic coating that’s fingerprint-resistant to keep the screen as clear as possible, no matter how much you swipe your fingers across it.

Overall, compared to older smartphone models, the screen on the iPhone 6 Plus is definitely an upgrade, and a welcomed one at that, considering the advancements already made by Android manufacturers.

Camera Improvements
New Picture (1)

The new 8MP iSight camera on the iPhone 6 Plus is another welcomed upgrade, even though the megapixel count hasn’t gone up since the iPhone 5S. The front-facing camera is a 1.2MP HD camera that allows additional light to enter the lens, providing for improved FaceTime sessions and selfies.

Users will immediately notice that, because Apple wanted to keep the phone body itself so slim, the camera on the back of the unit actually protrudes just a bit. With the right case, though, this problem will be resolved and you can rest assured the delicate technology will be properly protected. Plus, the lens is further protected with sapphire glass.

Shooting options include timer, HDR, and flash, as well as various effects you can add to your images. And you can also enjoy a handy panorama shooting mode too.

The volume keys on the side of the large phone make it easier to snap the shutter when you are ready to take your shot. And faster auto-focusing capabilities make it easier to snap a photo as soon as you want to. Plus, with blink, eye, and face detection, you can rest assured every portrait will be perfectly focused.

In terms of video, you can shoot HD video at 60fps, 120fps, or 240fps for some really slow motion footage.

Improved Battery Life
New Picture

With all of the power that the iPhone 6 Plus comes with, consumers are rightfully concerned about the battery life they can enjoy on this device, especially since the battery quality of previous versions of the iPhone has been a little disappointing.

Apple has stated that you can expect roughly 12 hours of browsing time on the new device. If you enjoy watching videos on your smartphone, you can expect to get 14 hours from a full charge. And if you prefer listening to music, you can get 80 hours of playback time.

The iPhone 6 Plus is certainly making waves, and as more consumers invest in the latest incarnation of Apple’s famous smartphone, you will continue hearing about the technology it boasts. In the meantime, if you want to get your hands on one of your own, be prepared to be surprised by its size if you aren’t used to larger smartphones. Once you get accustomed to handling it, you will find that the iPhone 6 Plus is definitely a step in the right direction for Apple.

Meet Engadget’s new buyer’s guide picks: The iPhone 6, Moto X and more!

Meet Engadget's new buyer's guide picks: The iPhone 6, Moto X, and more!

Here at Engadget, we make good on our promises. So when we say we’re going to be updating our buyer’s guide more frequently, well, gosh darn, we mean it. Roughly two months after we re-launched the guide, we’re adding a bunch of new gadgets, including the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the new Moto X, HTC One M8 for Windows, the Acer C720 Chromebook, the NVIDIA Shield gaming tablet and the Moto 360 smartwatch. Of course, we also had to remove some of our original picks to make room for the new ones: The new, 5.2-inch Moto X takes the place of the old 4.7-inch one, while the Moto 360 overtakes the Samsung Gear Live — formerly our favorite Android Wear device. We’re also getting rid of all the BlackBerrys for now. That’s not to say BBM hold-outs should switch operating systems, but until we get to try the new BlackBerry Passport, we’re going to refrain from including those older models. Check out our guide right here, and stay tuned for more updates next month — who knows what we’ll be adding then!
