As I always say, the release of an Apple product is never a bad thing – I just see it as an opportunity for people to make some pretty funny jokes about them. Naturally, being the hottest thing at the moment, even The Tonight Show‘s Jimmy Fallon had to have a go at Apple’s smartwatch, the Apple Watch, as part of their regular segment, Pros and Cons. In it, Fallon details some humours Pros and Cons of buying the Apple Watch, and some are absolute killers. Check it out below:
My personal favourite is “Pro: It comes in a variety of colours. Con: Like ‘Please Rob Me’ Silver and ‘Walking Target’ Gold”. There’s of course no denying that Apple has jumped on the smartwatch bandwagon just at the right time, but really we shouldn’t be concerned by how many Apple Watches are being sold – after all, they only work with iPhones anyway. All the same, it’s helping to grow the smartwatch industry and its mainstream appeal, which can only be a good thing for everybody in the long run.

Pretend you’ve got Project Ara with this modular smartphone case
As awesome as Project Ara is, we’ve yet to hear a solid timeline nor pricing info for Google’s ambitious modular smartphone. But we bring you good news: For those who lack patience and want to try the next best thing, you may want to consider the Nexpaq, a modular case for the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6 Edge and many more devices to come. Admittedly, we were a bit skeptical with this project’s claim upon receiving the startup’s pitch, but after meeting two of the co-founders in Hong Kong, we know they mean business.
Calling the Nexpaq “the next best thing” after Project Ara may be unfair, because rather than forcing you to pick up a totally new phone, this versatile case has the advantage of letting you add handy features to a device that you’re accustomed to. And of course, from a business standpoint it makes sense to go right after the biggest existing user bases, courtesy of Apple and Samsung. The Nexpaq team wants to keep its product super affordable, after all; even if you miss the $89 early bird offer, the starter package is just $109 and comes with four modules. As mentioned, the catch is that at the moment this is only available for the iPhone 6, the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.

The base case has a built-in 1,000 mAh battery along with six module slots, each using a customized connector that can be plugged in and out for at least 10,000 times. The startup already has a wide range of modules to offer: a 400 mAh battery, an amplified speaker, a powerful flashlight (with six multi-color LEDs), a microSD card reader, a temperature plus humidity sensor, a pair of customizable hotkeys, a 32GB USB flash drive (with built-in USB plug), an air quality sensor, a breathalyzer, a laser and a 32GB backup memory module. Most of the bundles come with the loudspeaker, battery, hotkeys and microSD reader modules, with the rest being optional, ranging from $14 to $29. And there’s also a $3 dummy module, should you struggle to decide how to occupy the last remaining slot.
The possibilities are limitless. Chief Strategy Officer Hubertus Wasmer sees great potential in developing a range of medical sensor modules, which can greatly lower costs while increasing portability, meaning doctors can easily carry a tiny lab to remote areas in third-world countries. The same goes for environmental sensors.

A prototype Nexpaq modular case shown alongside its companion app with non-final UI.
Unlike Project Ara, there are no fancy electropermanent magnets on the Nexpaq. According to CEO Alex Murawski, this technology is far from ready, and not to mention that it’d add up the cost. What you get instead is the good old slide-in mechanism that’s surprisingly secure on the prototypes we played with.
The status of each module is displayed in the accompanying app. Interestingly, this part is actually done through Bluetooth Low Energy, but the usual data link is through the micro-USB port or the Lightning port. In a live demo given by Murawski and Wasmer, the app responded almost instantaneously as they shuffled the modules around. It’s as if you’re slapping on various IoT sensors onto the back of your phone.

Nexpaq is no doubt a very ambitious project, but it’s also a solid one with good intentions. Prior to this startup, Murawski had already worked on eight other Kickstarter projects — including the Nomiku immersion circulators — for his clients at his other company, so R&D and manufacturing shouldn’t be a problem. Wasmer also stressed that this is an open platform, and it’s all about vastly lowering the cost of gadgets for both makers — hence the development kits — and consumers. For us, we just need to convince Nexpaq to make cases for more phones and maybe even tablets.

Rubix’s wireless battery sticks to your phone with magnets
When you’re spending most part of the day out and about, chances are at some point you’ll have to whip out your portable battery to juice up your smartphone. This usually means stacking your phone on top of a cable-wrapped power bank, and then clumsily holding everything together with one hand. Doesn’t sound very 2015, does it? It’s annoying enough for a startup called Rubix to come up with a solution: slap a magnetized Qi wireless charging case (aka On Case) on your phone, and then let it snap onto a magnetized wireless charging battery (aka On Charger). Look ma, no cable!
The 13.9mm-thick On Charger consists of a 5,000 mAh battery with two output options: a fast 2A current over a USB cable or a standard 1A over close-proximity wireless transmission. Better yet, the charger also has a wireless power receiver at the bottom (as indicated by the circular groove to fit the ring on the top side), which means not only can you plonk it onto any Qi wireless charging station, you can also stack one On Charger on top of another that’s plugged in to charge them up simultaneously, albeit taking twice as long — theoretically five hours — if you give the bottom charger a 2A current over USB.
As for the On Case, Rubix’s Kickstarter launch will do the iPhone 6 first, followed by stretch goals to bring the magnet-only On Cases for the already Qi-enabled Galaxy S6 plus Galaxy S6 Edge, as well as the bigger On Case for the iPhone 6 Plus. The charger is designed to be flush with the iPhone 6’s case, and it isn’t far off from the Galaxy S6 cases’ shapes, so you should have no problem holding them together. And even if you hold just the phone part, the magnets are plenty strong to hold the battery, as we found out on a couple of prototypes. But is this battery-and-case bundle worthy of $89 and up? We’ll let you be the judge.

Facebook brings video calling to Messenger
Facebook is no stranger to video chat, but it’s been keeping a low profile as of late. Well, it’s no longer content to sit on the sidelines while Skype and Hangouts steal the show — the company has just introduced video calling in Messenger. Whether you’re using Android or iOS, you only need to tap a single button in an existing conversation to start a face-to-face session. The feature is available today in 18 countries (including the UK and the US), so give it a shot if you’re a Facebook fan and would rather not fire up another app just to see who you’re talking to.

Djay for Apple Watch puts decks on your wrist
Desktop, laptop, tablet, phone and (now) watch. That’s a list of things you can DJ (or rather, djay) on, thanks to a multi-platform update to the eponymous(ish) app from Algoriddim. As Apple Watch (kinda) hits stores this week, you’ll be able to update Djay 2 for iOS (the Watch version isn’t a standalone app) so that it works with your new timepiece. Of course, features are stripped back, but you can do most things you need to keep the music flowing, such as browse your iTunes library, add and sync tunes to a “deck” or use Force Touch and have the software do it all for you (aka “Automix” mode). It’s a tough life for the wearable DJ. If you prefer to mix on the other devices we listed, Algoriddim has updates for you, too.
If you’re too cool to be seen DJing with a watch, maybe then perhaps djay Pro‘s new features are more your style? The latest version of the Mac app adds the ability to mix videos — whether that’s music videos themselves, or VJ-style visuals to go along with your tunes. The visuals can be fed to an external display, or even piped over Airplay — a feature with “house party” written all over it. If you prefer to leave the laptop alone, and do your thing on real decks, there’s also native support for a slew of Pioneer’s pro DJ kit. High end gear found in most clubs — including the CDJ2000/CDJ900 and XDJ1000 — will act as a controller for djay Pro out of the box, including advanced features like Slip Mode, waveform display and showing cue points. The same update also bundles in support for higher quality Spotify music (320kbs files) if that’s your preferred source of music.
The Pro update is free for existing owners, (djay Pro costs $50), and a premium Spotify account is needed for the integrated features. Djay 2 for iPhone ($3) and iPad ($10) will be free for a week — go go get it.

Vine makes it easier to share videos everywhere at once
So you’ve discovered a catch Vine video that you know your friends will instantly appreciate, but they’re scattered across multiple social networks. Will you have to sit there diligently tapping the share button over and over again to make sure everyone sees it? Not after today. Vine has updated its iOS app (Android is coming soon) with a revamped sharing feature that posts those six-second clips on multiple services in one shot. All you have to do to spread the word is mark the social networks you want to include (such as Tumblr, a new addition) and hit the share button. There’s still no Instagram option, to no one’s surprise, but this could otherwise save you a lot of effort.

At some point in life, you’ll want a marble iPhone case
Wood and leather are so yesterday. What you really want is some genuine marble on your precious gadgets. At least that’s the pitch from Native Union, which has recently announced its Clic Marble iPhone 6 case, available in matt black or glossy white — the latter consisting of the nice Carrara white marble from Italy. Don’t be fooled by its simple look, as the company took a year and a half to figure out how to carefully slice marble at just 0.8mm thick, and then reinforcing it with fiberglass to keep it flexible plus shatter-resistant. The case does add 2mm of bulk onto your device, and it does ask for $79.99 in the US or £69.99 in the UK, but these are the kinds of sacrifices that some are willing to make in return for that cold luxurious feel.
