Barcelona comedy club only makes you pay for the jokes you laugh at

Ever regret buying a ticket to a comedy show that just wasn’t funny? Some day, you might not: the Teatreneu, a theater in Barcelona, Spain, has changed from charging for admission to charging by laugh. The theater has outfitted each of its seats with a front-facing iPad and PayPerLaugh, an app that uses facial recognition to detect smiles. Ever joke you smile at costs 0.30 euros (about $0.38), with a maximum charge of 24 euros per show (about $30). The theater says that ticket prices have actually gone up as a result — monetary proof that its productions are legitimately funny. Teatreneu says its system is being copied in other venues throughout Spain, too. Would you prefer to pay by laugh? Skip through the break to the comments and let us know what you think.

Buyer’s Guide: Deals on the iPad Air, MacBooks, Apple Accessories, and More [Mac Blog]

There are several deals on various Apple products this week, including the iPad Air and several MacBooks. Target, for example, is offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any iPad Air model, which is perfect for users who are looking for a good deal on an iPad Air and don’t need to wait for an upgraded model with Touch ID.

Best Buy is also offering $50 to $125 off several Apple MacBooks, including multiple 2014 MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro models. This can be combined with Best Buy’s EDU deals, which offer $50 off all MacBooks and $50 off iMacs.

Retina MacBook Pro

The next iOS update will likely block your favorite game emulator

GBA4iOS emulator on an iPhone 5c

If you’re using iOS, you’d better not get too attached to your favorite unofficial game emulator — there’s a real chance that you won’t have an easy way to load it before long. The GBA4iOS team has noticed that the iOS 8.1 beta fixes a loophole that lets you install third-party emulators and other unapproved apps simply by rolling back the date on your device. This won’t prevent you from installing emulators if you’re willing to jailbreak, but you’ll have to give up the luxuries afforded by official support (such as timely OS updates) if you want to relive your gaming glory days on an iPhone.

As tester Dario Sepulveda explains, it’s surprising that the workaround lasted as long as it did. Apple regularly patches security holes that allow for unofficial code, and copyright holders like Nintendo probably wanted those flaws eliminated ages ago. Whatever the reasoning behind the fix, you’re going to have to make a tough choice if you like playing old-school games on modern hardware.

Apple’s next big event is on October 16th, new iPad and Macs likely

It’s only been a month since the world’s press descended on the Flint Center for the Performing Arts to see Tim Cook reveal a pair of new iPhones, and Apple’s already calling everyone back again. Invites to an October 16th event at the company’s Cupertino headquarters have just started making the rounds — if rumor mill’s ceaseless whispers hold true, we’ll be getting a eyeful of a new iPad Air and some new Mac computers, along with a few software notes to round out the package.

As usual, it’s the iPad that’s been getting most of the attention — the famed Vietnamese leakers at Tinhte.vn shared images of an awfully trim new iPad design with some shuffled-around buttons (including volume buttons that are recessed into that aluminum frame) and a TouchID sensor nestled in the ol’ Home button. Meanwhile, some desktop prognosticators have foretold that the 27-inch iMac will finally get a Retina display of its very own, and MacRumors notes that there’s a faint glimmer of hope for some new Mac minis too. Throw in one last look at OS X Yosemite before it launches to the public and we’ve got one meaty agenda — we’ll be there covering the event live (as always!), so stay tuned for much, much more.

SwiftKey’s first iOS update helps you start typing faster

SwiftKey on iOS

If you jumped at the chance to try the first wave of third-party iOS keyboards, you probably noticed that they’re a little… rough around the edges. You may want to give at least one of them a second try, though. SwiftKey has just released the first update to its iOS input method, and it tackles some of the larger gripes that early adopters have noticed. The biggest deal is the improved load time, which should let you start typing faster; there are also fixes for some easy-to-reproduce crashes, like one that occurs when you backspace over emoji. Head over to the App Store if you’re eager to iron out of some of SwiftKey’s earliest wrinkles.

Apple’s upcoming iPad event may take place on October 16th

Apple Different Thinking CEO

It’s no secret that Apple tends to reveal its new iPads in October — at least, that’s been the company’s tradition for the past few years — so the big question has been exactly when in October we can expect to see these upcoming tablets. According to Re/code, which has a history of predicting such event dates with a high degree of accuracy, we should mark October 16th on our calendars. The report indicates that the launch will take place at Apple’s Town Hall auditorium, so it’ll be a smaller affair than last month’s spectacle. While we haven’t seen as many rumors of the new devices as we did with, say, the iPhone 6, there’s been a lot of buzz about a new 12-inch model making the rounds in addition to the usual 9.7-inch Air and 7.9-inch mini. There’s also a chance we’ll see new options on the iMac side; and with OS X Yosemite and Apple Pay due very soon, you can count on some fanfare about those as well.

Vuzix’s smart glasses now talk to your iPhone

Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses

Vuxix’s M100 Smart Glasses may be Android-powered, but that doesn’t mean you have to use its hands-free features with other Android devices. The company has rolled out an OS 2.0 update that lets you use the wearable with most iOS gear. So long as you have the companion app (due very shortly), you can take full advantage of the M100’s augmented reality apps, hands-free calling and other features that keep your hands free. If you’ve been looking for a head-mounted computer that will play nicely with your iPhone (and isn’t as pricey as Google Glass), your search might be over.

iPad, I choose you: ‘Pokémon’ officially hits the App Store

Remember that Pokémon iPad game that was teased not too long ago? Well, if the mere mention of it stoked a fire inside that made you want to abandon Blizzard’s Hearthstone forever, Joystiq has spotted that the pocket monster trading card game is available on the App Store now. Pokémon TCG Online is free to download, but there are a few catches. As the name suggests, it requires an internet connection to play and your Apple-branded slate needs to be of the Retina-display variety — your first- and second-gen iPads won’t cut the mustard, according to iTunes. If you’re already heavily invested in the game on OSX and Windows, Time points out that progress you’ve made in the last three years transfers over to the mobile version as well. Handy! And just like that, a Nintendo property is appearing somewhere other than on one of its own devices. Somewhere, an investor is probably smiling.

Bloomberg: Apple’s splashing gold paint on the iPad too

The nice thing about living in Apple’s ecosystem is everything is consistent: the app library, the user interface and design motifs echo across all of the company’s devices. Well, unless you have a gold iPhone — then any iPad you could possibly buy just simply wouldn’t match. According to Bloomberg, however, those days might be over: the usual people familiar with Apple’s plans say that the company will launch a 9.7-inch iPad next month with a gold backplate. You know, in case your buying habits are governed more by fashion than new features.
