Apple Seeds Fourth Beta of iOS 10.2 to Developers
Apple today seeded the fourth beta of an upcoming iOS 10.2 update to developers, two weeks after seeding the third beta of iOS 10.2 and a month after releasing iOS 10.1, the first major update to iOS 10.
Registered developers can download the fourth iOS 10.2 beta from the Apple Developer Center and it should be available over-the-air soon with the proper configuration profile installed.
iOS 10.2 introduces new emoji, such as clown face, drooling face, selfie, face palm, fox face, owl, shark, butterfly, avocado, pancakes, croissant, and more. There are more than a hundred new emoji, including several profession emoji available in both male and female genders, such as firefighter, mechanic, lawyer, doctor, scientist, and more. Apple has also redesigned many existing emoji, adding more detail to make them look much more realistic.
Along with new emoji, iOS 10.2 includes new wallpaper, new Music sorting options and buttons for Repeat and Shuffle, new “Celebrate” and “Send with Love” Screen Effects, an option for preserving camera settings, a TV widget and TV settings, Single-Sign On support for watching live TV via apps, and the official “TV” app that was first introduced at Apple’s October 27 event.
The TV app serves as an Apple-designed TV guide that’s designed to simplify the television watching experience and discover new TV shows and movies to watch. The TV app will eventually be available on both iOS devices and the Apple TV.
With iOS 10.2, the “Videos” app is replaced entirely with the new “TV” app, which will now serve as the TV and movie hub on iOS devices.

DirecTV Now Supports Single Sign-on for Upcoming ‘TV’ App on iOS and Apple TV
Apple’s upcoming iOS 10.2 and tvOS 10.1 updates will bring a new “TV” app where users will be able to view much of their TV and movie content from across various apps, all centrally located to make it easy to pick up where you left off and receive recommendations on additional content.
The new TV app has been gradually going live on both platforms for U.S. users during the beta testing period, and it works hand-in-hand with a “Single Sign-on” feature that will let subscribers to certain pay TV services authenticate their accounts once on a systemwide basis and receive access to content across all supported apps for which they are eligible.
When the early beta of Single Sign-on began going live earlier this month, there were four supported TV providers, with Dish Network and its Sling TV subsidiary being the most recognizable while small regional services GVTC Communications and Hotwire rounded out the list.
Full support for Single Sign-on will require apps to be updated to recognize the systemwide authentication, but the provider listings have offered a glimpse at which providers are currently on board with the feature.
As of this week, another major provider has joined the Single Sign-on program, with AT&T’s DirecTV now appearing in the TV Provider list for authentication. The addition of DirectTV’s 20 million U.S. subscribers makes it the biggest provider to support the feature so far, displacing Dish Network and Sling TV.
The addition of DirecTV isn’t necessarily a surprise, as Apple had touted “DirecTV, Dish Network, and more” in its press release announcing the new TV app last month, but it’s apparently taken DirecTV a few extra weeks to prepare. Still notably absent are the major U.S. cable companies such as Comcast and Charter/Time Warner, and there’s no word on if or when those companies will be coming on board.
Apple has announced that the new TV app will become available to the public in December, indicating the company intends to release iOS 10.2 and tvOS 10.1 within that timeframe.

Twitter App Introduces Rich Notifications Support in iOS 10
Twitter’s first-party iOS app recently began rolling out support for rich notifications for anyone on iOS 10, letting users get a larger glimpse at their incoming notifications without having to open their iPhone or the Twitter app. The new notifications include a few formatting retouches, as well as the inclusion of images in relevant posts.
With the new notification set-up, users will get pop-ups for the usual Twitter activities, including @ mentions and direct messages, but now a small thumbnail appears alongside the text of the Tweet on the iPhone lock screen and in Notification Center. Whenever users force touch the notification, they’ll get an expanded view of the content with a larger image, along with the normal options to like and retweet.
Rich notifications were one of the flagship features when iOS 10 launched in September, and have been included in many of Apple’s first-party apps like Messages and Mail. Other companies have slowly been adding support for the feature, including apps like Netatmo Security, which let users watch clips of a connected security camera directly within the notification.

Apple Reintroduces Butt-Like Peach Emoji in iOS 10.2 Beta 3 Following User Complaints
iOS 10.2, currently being beta tested, introduces new artwork for many existing emoji. Apple has made an effort to add more detail to emoji, for a more realistic, vivid look that works well with the Messages feature in iOS 10 and macOS Sierra that displays larger emoji.
Almost all of the food emojis were redesigned in iOS 10.2, but one redesign received a lot more attention than others – the peach. The iOS peach emoji, in addition to representing the fruit, has long been used as a symbol for a person’s rear end due to its design and angling, which Apple changed in iOS 10.2 beta 1.
The iOS 10.2 beta 1 peach emoji was much rounder and more peach-like, eliminating its resemblance to a butt. The shift was widely noted (and mourned) on the internet, and the attention the redesign received seems to have prompted Apple to change the emoji back to its original look.
As The Next Web points out, the peach emoji has been overhauled again in iOS 10.2 beta 3, and now it once again resembles a derriere. The colors have shifted a bit and there’s more detail included, but it is undeniably – and perhaps more so – butt-like.
It’s an insignificant change, but the reversion of the peach emoji to its original state suggests Apple listens to and takes into account the feedback of its users, even when it comes to small details.

In addition to changing the look of the peach emoji, iOS 10.2 beta 3 also further refined the new TV app, adding “Up Next” functionality and fully eliminating the Videos app in the United States. iOS 10.2 is still in beta testing, but we expect to see a public release in December, which is when Apple has said many of the iOS 10.2 features will debut.

What’s new in iOS 10.2 beta 3:
SOS – It appears the SOS functionality that allowed users to call emergency services by pressing the power button multiple times has been removed in this beta. According to Apple’s release notes, SOS is currently only available in India.
TV settings – In the Settings app, there’s a new section for the TV app. It allows users to choose whether to use cellular data for playback and choose the streaming quality over Wi-Fi and Cellular. There’s also an option to choose whether to make purchases and rentals from the store in HD or SD.
TV functionality – The TV app now supports the “Up Next” feature that keeps track of the television shows and movies you’re watching, saving your place or recommending next episodes across multiple devices.
Videos – The Videos app has been removed from iOS entirely, as it has been replaced with the TV app. The Videos widget, introduced with iOS 10.1, has also been removed, but there is a replacement TV widget that’s been available since beta 2.

PayPal iOS App Update Brings Siri Integration to Send and Receive Money
PayPal has updated its iOS app to include Siri integration with support for a variety of languages across 30 countries.
In a post on its official blog, PayPal announced that users of the digital payment service will be able to use Apple’s voice-activated AI personal assistant to send and request money among friends and family.
With so many P2P transactions happening during such a busy season, we’re excited to give our users an early holiday present: starting November 10, Siri will be integrated with PayPal. For iPhone and iPad users running iOS 10, making a payment has never been easier – PayPal users can now send and request money via a voice command with Siri. Simply say, “Hey Siri, send Bill $50 using PayPal.” Voila! One less thing to check off the to-do list this holiday season.
The company says it expects the number of peer-to-peer transactions to increase over the holiday period, and predicts more than 17 million transactions in December alone.
Support for Siri-PayPal integration currently covers the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium (French and Dutch), Brazil, Canada (English and French), China, Denmark, Finland (Finnish), France, Germany, Hong Kong (Cantonese), India, Israel (Hebrew), Italy, Japan, Malaysia (Malay), Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia (Arabic), Singapore (English), Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (French, German, and Italian), Thailand, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates (Arabic), and the United States.
With the launch of iOS 10, Apple opened up Siri to third-party developers for the first time by making a Siri API publicly available. Siri now supports a multitude of app types, including messaging apps like WhatsApp and ride-hailing apps like Uber.

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 10.1.1
Apple today seeded a minor version change to iOS 10.1.1, the current version of the iOS 10 operating system. The update is minor enough that it did not warrant a full 10.x.x number change, but it does include an updated build number.
iOS 10.1.1 being released today has a build number of 14B150, while the initial iOS 10.1.1 release, which came on October 31, had a build number of 14B100.
The new build of iOS 10.1.1 is only available as a download from Apple’s servers and cannot be obtained over-the-air at this time for those who have already installed the first version of iOS 10.1.1. The new version of iOS 10.1.1 will likely be provided to those who have yet to install iOS 10.1.1, as it otherwise requires an iTunes connection to obtain.
There is no new information in the changelog for the updated build, so it is unclear what minor bug fixes or changes it brings.
The first version of iOS 10.1.1 fixed a bug that caused Health data to be unavailable for some users. A minor update, iOS 10.1.1 was released shortly after iOS 10.1, a more significant update that brought a new “Portrait” mode and dozens of bug fixes and feature improvements.

As can be seen in the video and outline below, iOS 10.2 includes the TV app Apple promised at its October 27 event, some Apple Music design tweaks, and support for a new SOS feature.
TV app – The TV app is designed to serve as an Apple-designed TV guide to help users discover new content and decide what to watch. It’s going to be available for iOS devices and the Apple TV, and it features support for Single Sign-On and Siri Live Tune-In, along with a store for purchasing iTunes content and TV subscriptions and recommendations for new shows and movies to watch.
SOS – There’s a new SOS feature that will call emergency services when the power button on the iPhone is pressed five times. According to Apple’s release notes, SOS works in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, UK, and US. Settings for SOS are available in the Settings app under the General section.
Music – There are more prominent Shuffle and Repeat buttons available in the Music app when playing a song.

iOS 10.2 Beta 2 Includes New ‘TV’ App for Discovering Content
At it’s October 27 Mac-centric event, Apple announced a new “TV” app, which is designed to serve as a sort of TV guide, helping users discover new content and find TV shows and movies to watch. The TV app is meant to work across multiple devices, including iOS devices and the Apple TV, and as of today the TV app is available in the iOS 10.2 beta.
Apple’s new TV app works hand-in-hand with features like Siri Live Tune-In and Single Sign-On, simplifying the television-watching experience.
In addition to a Library section that displays all the iTunes content a user has purchased, the TV app also features a “Watch Now” section that houses a collection of TV shows and movies from iTunes and other television apps a user has installed on an Apple TV or iOS device.
An Up Next feature keeps track of TV shows and movies across devices so you can pick up where you were watching, whether in the middle of a movie or the next episode of a TV show, and there are lists of curated and trending TV shows and movies.
A dedicated store lets users purchase content from iTunes or from other sources like HBO Go. The Store section also lets users sign in with their TV provider to find content available through an authenticated cable subscription.
Apple’s release notes state that the TV app isn’t yet fully functional, and it does not appear to be available in the tvOS 10.1 beta just yet. Apple has said the TV app will see an official release in December.
