Huawei D8 high end smartphone in pipeline for 2016

huawei_phone_d8

A new rumor out of China indicates Huawei still has plans to release the Huawei D8 even though the timing has been pushed back to 2016. An original roadmap for Huawei devices showed the Huawei D8 on schedule for 2015, but that is not going to happen.

The Huawei D8 will be powered by the as-yet-unannounced Kiron 960 processor. The device will have a quad HD 5.5-inch sapphire glass screen and come equipped with 4 GB of RAM. All of this adds up to a device targeted at the high end where Huawei hopes to start competing against Samsung’s devices. Early indications are that the device will be priced in excess of 5,000 yuan ($774 USD).

The best-selling unlocked Android phones from Best Buy (December 22)

Motorola’s 2nd-Gen Moto G is at the head of the pack

Purchasing a new smartphone can be quite the expensive endeavor. Moreover, it can also be a bit of a headache as you try to consider which phone, which carrier, and which rate plan is right. We’re here to help you with at least one of those segments: the phone.

Why unlocked?

The benefit of an unlocked smartphone, for those who aren’t aware, is that it can be used on a variety of wireless service providers. Moreover, going this route ensures you don’t have to worry about contracts or long-term obligations. Want to hop from T-Mobile to AT&T or vice-versa? That’s no problem when you’re using an unlocked GSM phone.

Moto G 2nd

We’ve gathered up the 10 best-selling unlocked Android devices from Best Buy so you can get a sense for what’s available. Indeed, you’ll see a nice mix of big-name vendors and devices from other, scrappy players. Note that we’ve omitted color variations; you might find other colors available.

So, the next time you need to replace your existing phone, consider scooping up one of these. It’s often a heck of a lot cheaper than going through your carrier in the long run.

After launching the gold-colored variant of the Nexus 6P in Japan, Huawei has launched it in India today. The Huawei Nexus 6P Special Edition is listed on Flipkart with a price tag of $663.49 (~ INR 43,999), and will be available for purchase exclusively through the e-commerce giant starting next week – December 21.

When compared to the normal variant of the Nexus 6P, which is available in silver and grey colors, the Special Edition can be differentiated only by its golden color. Moreover, it is features 64GB of internal storage, unlike the normal version of the device, which is available in both, 32GB and 64GB, storage sizes.

The Huawei Nexus 6P was launched in India by Google on October 13 along with the LG Nexus 5X. While the Nexus 6P was launched exclusively through Flipkart, the 16GB variant of the Nexus 5X was available exclusively through Amazon India. However, both these devices are now available through various online and offline retailers.

The Huawei Nexus 6P has been well received by the Indian audience and keeping in mind the niche target group, we have introduced the Gold color Special Edition of the smartphone.

– Allen Wang, President of Consumer Device Business Group, Huawei India.

In other news, the price of the LG Nexus 5X has been dropped to just $347 (~ INR 22,999) from its initial price of $482 (~ INR 31,990). Both, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, come pre-installed with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box and feature 12.3-megapixel 1/2.3-inch camera sensors with laser autofocus. Huawei may have its own GPU and flash memory in the works to complement Kirin CPUs

huawei_logo001-780x447It’s rare to see any company make a smartphone from their own components, with Samsung being one of the only exceptions. Most OEMs buy the processors and other pieces from manufacturers, which is part of the reason why Samsung has been so successful with their component and Exynos business. Not only does it help keep the cost of building a phone a little lower, but supply other partners to supplement their business model.

It looks like Huawei might be the next OEM to throw their hat in the ring to complement their homegrown Kirin processors. The company is exploring options to build their own GPUs and flash memory, instead of relying on companies like ARM to buy graphics chips from. That should, theoretically, help Huawei fully optimize their hardware, considering they’d be dealing with a fully in-house solution from the CPU to the GPU.

The rumors surrounding the memory chips are a little more hazy, but it seems like Huawei may design the flash memory then outsource the actual production to another company that’s already capable of mass producing flash memory for mobile phones.

Unfortunately, there’s no time frame on when we can actually expect to see this in the wild, but I’d doubt it’d be in 2016 with how big of a jump it’ll be for the company.

Huawei P9 could be arriving in March 2016

huawei_logo_june2015_event_TA

The Huawei P9, tipped to feature a fingerprint sensor and 5.2-inch display, could be on sale in less than six months, one source suggests.

A report arriving courtesy of Mobile-Dad claims that Huawei intends to launch the P9 smartphone in March 2016, almost a year after the premium-feeling P8 made its way onto the market.

Discussing specs, the mobile tech website says the Huawei P9, codenamed IP03, will arrive with a 5.2-inch display, this time boasting a ‘curved design’. The report notes that the resolution of the screen remains a mystery, although the gadget is apparently powered by Huawei’s own octa-core Kirin 950 processor. A fingerprint sensor is simply mentioned as a ‘possibility’.

Under the hood of the P9 will be 4GB of RAM, adds Mobile-Dad, along with a dual rear-facing camera sporting laser auto focus technology. Back in October, one Twitter user claimed to share an image suggesting Huawei’s P9 would rock a dual rear camera.

Just last month, a Weibo source also shared some news of the Huawei P9, adding that the phone will drop equipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The same source leaked news of the Xiaomi Mi 5, which still remains under wraps.

Meanwhile, there are suggestions that the P9 will be accompanied by a larger Brother, the Huawei P9 Max. Rumoured to arrive with a 6.2-inch Quad HD screen, the gadget ‘could also be introduced some time next year’. Past benchmark tests have suggested the smartphone will offer users a 2560 x 1600 resolution screen, but this is unconfirmed.

The report adds: “We don’t know if Huawei is planning to unveil it at the same time with the 5.2-inch P9”.

Look out Apple and Samsung: Huawei shipped over 100 million phones in 2015

Huawei Mate 8 AA-

When I got my hands on the Huawei Mate 7 for the first time, I knew that this company was on to something. Despite some glaring software issues, the phone was highly attractive, the hardware was excellent, and the rear fingerprint scanner was one of the best implementations I’d ever witnessed. Since then, Huawei has only went uphill, introducing the Huawei Mate S, and more recently the Nexus 6p and Mate 8. Not only is the hardware prowess on the upward march, so is consumer interest it seems.

Huawei has now announced it has shipped more than 100 million smartphones this year, putting in on ground that is almost even with major competitors Samsung and Apple.

The big difference between Huawei and the other ‘big two’ is that the bulk of the third largest phone manufacturer lies in China and other parts of Asia. That said, Huawei has made a push towards the western markets in 2015 and in 2016 is reportedly set to bring the Mate 8, Honor 5x, and other key products to the United States. Will this continued push allow Huawei to jump ahead of the current smartphone kings, Samsung and Apple? While it’s hard to say for sure, there is no denying that Huawei is on a roll, like them or not.

For Huawei, it likely will come down to marketing, and software. Huawei has proven that it has the hardware and design side of things down, with the Nexus 6p winning our “people’s choice” award for the best Android phone of the year. If Huawei can find a way to makes it software more western market friendly on its non-Nexus devices, things will only go up from here.

What do you think of Huawei? Impressed by what you’ve seen, or less optimistic? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The Wirecutter’s best deals: The Nexus 6P, and more!

This post was done in partnership with The Wirecutter, a buyer’s guide to the best technology. Read their continuously updated list of deals at TheWirecutter.com.

You may have already seen Engadget posting reviews from our friends at The Wirecutter. Now, from time to time, we’ll also be publishing their recommended deals on some of their top picks. Read on, and strike while the iron is hot — some of these sales could expire mighty soon.

Fitbit Charge HR Activity Tracker

Street Price: $145; MSRP: $150; Deal Price: $110 + $10 gift card

This deal is about $5 more than the lowest non-Black Friday price we’ve seen on this product before factoring in the gift card. The promotion is available on all colors and sizes of the fitness tracker.

The Fitbit Charge HR is our pick for the best fitness tracker. Jim McDannald said, “According to our tests, it’s more accurate at counting steps than most other wrist-worn trackers, not to mention it works seamlessly with Fitbit’s popular social ecosystem. And unique among most dedicated wrist trackers less than $200, the Charge HR uses a strap modeled after a traditional watch strap, which means it won’t ever fall off accidentally.”

Logitech Bluetooth Easy-Switch K811 Keyboard

Street Price: $90; MSRP: $100; Deal Price: $63

This deal is part of Amazon’s Gold Box Deal of the Day, which means it will only be around through the end of the day. We actually had this up on the page yesterday when it dropped to $80 because that was one of its lowest prices in months, but $63 is its lowest price ever.

The Logitech Bluetooth Easy-Switch K811 Keyboard is our upgrade pick for the best Bluetooth keyboard. Kimber Streams wrote, “If you spend all day typing (like I do), you should upgrade to one of Logitech’s Bluetooth Easy-Switch Keyboards: the K811 for Mac or the K810 for Windows. Both are more comfortable than the K380 [our main pick], with smooth, well-spaced square keys; an adjustable backlight; and correct layouts for Mac and Windows users, respectively. Our upgrade picks also have rechargeable batteries and, like the K380, let you switch between three different paired devices with the press of a button.”

Google Nexus 6P 32GB Smartphone

Street Price: $500; MSRP: $500; Deal Price: $450

This is a rare discount on one of our newest smartphone picks. You’ll save $50 off the street price on a product that barely budges from the $500 mark. This is the first deal we’ve posted on this smartphone our guide on the topic was updated just this week.

The Nexus 6P is the phablet pick in our guide on the best Android phones. Ryan Whitwam said, “If you like big phones and don’t mind paying $500 up front, you should get the Google Nexus 6P. It’s our favorite Android phone of any we’ve used this year. The 6P runs pure Android 6.0 Marshmallow, sports a top-of-the-line 1440p Super AMOLED screen, and has an attractive unibody aluminum frame. On the back is one of the best cameras available on a smartphone, along with a Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner that’s even faster and more accurate than the one on the Galaxy S6.”

Samsung UN40J5500 40-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV

Street Price: $450; MSRP: $750; Deal Price: $384

This deal isn’t quite as good as the one we saw on Black Friday, falling $16 short of the lowest price. It’s still a good deal because it’s the only other time we’ve seen it drop below $400.

The Samsung UN40J5500 is the better color/streaming pick in our guide on the best $500 TV. When comparing to our main pick, Chris Heinonen said, “It is only 40 inches instead of 43 and has a 1080p image instead of Ultra HD. It offers a more accurate image than the Vizio in terms of color and color temperature, but without the ultra dark blacks the Vizio can produce.”

Deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go to The Wirecutter.com.

Huawei bringing the Mate 8, Honor 5X and “new smartwatch” to the USA

huawei-mate-8-1

Huawei’s struggle to enter the USA market has been constant. It was only some years ago that most people had no idea how to even pronounce the brand name, but you can bet much more of you will be familiarized with Huawei soon.

The Chinese manufacturer has had a hard time entering the USA due to security concerns. Most of us associated the brand with cheap low-end phones you get from prepaid carriers, right? But they actually make some great phones for the Chinese market, something many of us could benefit from at some point.

huawei mate 8 press x (5)

Things are changing and now Google’s flagship device, the Nexus 6P, is made by Huawei. And the company is certainly not stopping there. They plan to further push their devices into the USA. According to The Wall Street Journal, CES 2016 will be used as a runaway for their triumphant takeoff.

“People familiar with the matter” are stating the manufacturer is getting ready to introduce one of its high-end devices, something that is definitely a special occurrence. Huawei is not known for releasing high-end phones in America (other than the recent Nexus 6P), so this should be a strong push for the Chinese phone maker.

More Huawei content:

This flagship device would be the Huawei Mate 8, which we have actually played around with. These sources also state the company will be showcasing the Honor 5X and a “new smartwatch”. All of these will be heading to the USA next year.

As for the prices, we really have no idea about them the Huawei Mate 8 is definitely not cheap. Even in China they are worth the equivalent of up to $700. Keep in mind this is a powerful handset, packed with a 6-inch 1080p display, four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex A53 CPU cores, as well as up to 4 GB of RAM, up to 128 GB of internal storage, a 16 MP rear camera, an 8 MP front shooter and a 4000 mAh battery.

Huawei Mate 8 AA-

The Honor 5X is a bit lower end, but is also worth the equivalent of $300 in China. It will probably be a good mid-end option. We are clueless about the new smartwatch though. We suppose we will have to wait for those details.

We need to stop underestimating Huawei in the USA. We know a lot of people don’t think much of it, but this just so happens to be the 3rd biggest smartphone vendor around, beaten only by Apple and Samsung. Do we have your attention yet? Let’s stay tuned for more to come during CES, when Huawei is said to be showing off these products.

Huawei will unveil a women’s Huawei Watch at CES

women Huawei watch

Huawei makes one of the nicest looking Android Wear watches to date, however, just like most smartwatches, it’s probably a little big for your wrist if you are a women. For that reason, Huawei is rumoured to unveil a women’s version at CES 2016.

The women’s watches will feature similar functionality to the standard version, with only visual changes. Featuring more feminine-looking bands, and stylized watch cases. We would assume Huawei will also be making some new watch faces to match the new watch designs.

Also, it is said Huawei is already working on a second generation normal Huawei Watch, with plans to launch it in the second half of next year. Some other rumours we are hearing is it may feature cellular capabilities.
