Purported Huawei Ascend P8 images leak out ahead of April press event

huawei logo mwc 2015 3

The next big smartphone announcement of 2015 will probably be Huawei’s Ascend P8, which is assumed to be announced at the company’s April 15th press event in London. We don’t know anything about the handset for sure, but we have heard a handful of interesting rumors about the device regarding its cameras, processor, screen size, battery capacity and more. As for the device’s aesthetics? Thanks to a few recently-outed images, we might have a good idea as to what the new smartphone will bring to the table.

The first notable image we should talk about is the most recent leak from @OnLeaks. Just yesterday, the leaker outed a single picture of what’s purported to be the P8’s backside. More specifically, the image gives us a look at the bottom edge, which features a pretty standard layout. All we’re seeing is a Micro USB port flanked by two speaker cutouts. The device looks to be mostly made of a type of metal, though the picture is quite fuzzy, so it’s a little difficult to tell.

The next image comes to us from another leaker on Twitter. The new image gives us a better look at the phone’s bottom edge. We’d be lying if we didn’t see some design queues taken from the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the iPhone 6, but there’s really only so much manufacturers can do when the edges are made of metal. The smartphone in the image is surrounded by a protective case. Even so, judging by this image, the phone’s chassis looks thin. If both of these leaks are accurate, the P8 is shaping up to be one attractive device.

So far, the Huawei Ascend P8 rumors have been suggesting the device will come with a 5.2-inch full HD display, a 64-bit octa-core Kirin 930 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage, a 13MP OIS rear-facing camera and a 2,600mAh battery. A few more rumors have also suggested that it will only be 6mm thin, which is a whole 0.5mm thinner than the Ascend P7.

Again, these are all just rumors for now, so be sure to take all of this with a grain of salt. But if the rumored specifications and the above images prove to be true, could the Huawei Ascend P8 be a contender for your next smartphone?

Huawei P8 could be unveiled during the company’s April 15 event

huaweip8april15

Several leaks have told us about the Huawei P8 smartphone, which is expected to be the company’s next major flagship. The Chinese manufacturer has partially confirmed the arrival of this handset by scheduling an event for the 15th of April, which is in less than month from now.

The event will be held in London at 3PM (11AM EDT, 8AM PDT). The schedule suggests that the event will go on for an hour and a half, so we don’t think there will be much else on the agenda apart from the new flagship.

The launch of the smartphone in London tells us about the company’s intentions to make a mark as a global OEM rather than limiting itself to just the Asian markets. Huawei is also expected to launch a Nexus smartphone this year, so it’s understandable as to why the company would want to project such an image of itself.

Rumors and leaks in the past have suggested that the Huawei Ascend P8 will pack a 5.2 inch 1080p display with a unique ceramic unibody design, the company’s Kirin 930 octa core SoC, 3GB of RAM, dual 13-megapixel cameras, Android 5.0 Lollipop and a 2,600 mAh battery.

Huawei sends out invites for April 15 event in London, Ascend P8 incoming?

huawei logo mwc 2015 4

Huawei has begun sending out invitations to a press conference that will be taking place in London on April 15th, which was initially hinted at by Huawei back in January. The event will begin at 3pm GMT (11am EDT) and the company is expected to announce its new high-end Ascend P8 smartphone. Huawei has launched its previous Ascend P smartphones in Europe.

huawei-press event londonSpecifications have been kept close to Huawei’s chest, but rumors are pointing to 5.2-inch handset with a full HD (1920×1080) resolution display. Huawei is also expected to include its in-house 64-bit octa-core Kirin 930 CPU, which is built from four Cortex-A57 and four A53 CPU cores and a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU on a 16nm process. Other anticipated hardware includes 3GB or RAM, 32GB of storage, a 13MP OIS rear camera and a 2,600mAh battery.

A dual rear camera rumor also appeared last month, which would allow photographers to re-adjust the focal point of a picture after it has been taken. This feature is similar to what Samsung, HTC and LG have offered in previous handsets. A fingerprint scanner could also feature on the P8. A focus on new build materials is also expected during Huawei’s P8 announcement. We’ve previously heard rumors suggesting a metallic frame with a ceramic back and buttons.

The Huawei Ascend P8 will supposedly be priced at around ¥2999 ($480), which would easily undercut the current batch of flagship smartphones. We should know more about price, availability and specifications come April 15th.

P8 teaser shows stronger screen and better camera

gsmarena_001

With Huawei geared to release the P8 flagship phone on April 15, the trickle of teasers and leaks has turned into a flood. Well today, a new leak gives a hint that the Huawei flagship will be a bit more robust in a few key areas.

From what we see of the teaser (above) the phone will feature a stronger screen and a better camera. The third teaser image shows us that the phone may have a price that surprises people. From what we’ve seen so far rumor wise, the P8 looks to have a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a ceramic unibody chassis and will be powered Kirin 930 chipset. It will sport 3GB of RAM and have a 13MP rear shooter as well.

While leaks have shown the Kirin 940 and 950 processors are in the works, it probably won’t be ready for prime time here in a month. Of course, with the way this device is shaping up, we could be given an idea of what a Huawei Nexus device may look like here in a little over a month.

Specifications of Huawei’s new Kirin 940 and 950 leaked; Could feature on the rumored Nexus smartphone

kirinhuawei

Huawei is known for its custom range of SoCs that are currently running on its smartphones. Reports from a few days ago mentioned that the company’s rumored Nexus handset could feature the Kirin 930 SoC. However, new reports seem to suggest that the company might use a more powerful Kirin 940 or 950 SoC, both of which are yet to be unveiled by the manufacturer.

The two new SoCs are expected to use a more advanced CPU architecture compared to the Kirin 930 octa core chip and with ARM Mali T860 GPU (Kirin 940) and ARM Mali T880 GPU (Kirin 950). Of course, it’s still too early to tell if this is legitimate info, but Chinese sources are usually spot on when it comes to information such as this.

It is said that Huawei will unveil the Kirin 940 and the 950 sometime this year, possibly a few months in advance. If true, it seems like Huawei will leave no stone unturned in making the upcoming Nexus phone a powerhouse.

Huawei Watch won’t be cheap, but it won’t be super expensive either

huawei_watch_official

The rumors of the Huawei Watch going for $1,000 was obviously insane. Now that everyone is back to earth, we are starting to get an idea of how much this thing of beauty will cost.

It has already shown up with a price of €349 ($370) for the silver and black versions on a German site called Billinger. They are offering the gold version for €399 ($424).

Mobile Fun in the UK has also chimed in with £300 ($448) for the silver and black versions and £350 ($522) for the gold.

Now we translated prices to the U.S., but it never works that way. We can expect that the U.S. price to be closer to the Euros or Pounds pricing since there won’t be any extra taxes built in. I am hopeful the U.S. price will be $299 and $349, but I suspect it will come in at $349 and $399.

The Huawei Watch looks awesome, but I am still concerned with that smaller battery. I sense another Moto 360 in that we won’t be able to leave that display on all the time like you can on the LG G Watch R and the upcoming LG Watch Urbane.

The Huawei Watch will cost $1000, according to premature Amazon posting

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: the Huawei Watch is a beautiful smartwatch. Despite its beauty, however, we’ve recently been hearing that the device is going to cost around $1000, which when compared to existing smartwatches, is a gargantuan sum of money. And this has seemingly been reinforced today by an Amazon listing […]

The Huawei Watch is michievously priced at €999/$1083 on Amazon.de pre-order page

Huawei Watch silver Amazon.de ElectronicsA few days ago, we ran a story refuting the rumour that the Huawei Watch might be retailing for $1000. However, Amazon.de now has the Huawei Watch available to pre-order for €999 ($1083), which is an eye-watering amount to spend for an Android Wear smartwatch. As you can probably tell though, all is not as it seems.

Unsurprisingly, this (€999/$1083) pre-order price is just a placeholder, as alluded to by the Important Note from Amazon on the listing page:

“There is no suggested retail price of pages of the manufacturer. The Amazon selling price can therefore change.”

It’s something that Amazon often do with pre-order items, placing wildly unrealistic price tags on items with no official retail value so that the online retailer isn’t out of pocket when the actual price is revealed. It’s just a matter of waiting for Huawei to announce an official price for the smartwatch. Whatever the official price for the Huawei Watch turns out to be, it’s extremely doubtful that it will be priced anywhere near the $1000 figure. Even the gold variant with its 3 ounces of 24-karat gold will be much, much cheaper than that.

Possible Huawei P8 shows up in more photos

Huawei-P8-leak

We’ve seen in a variety of leaks, that Huawei is looking at announcing the P8 sometime in April without the Ascend moniker. Well two new photos out of China show us a new look at the possible Ascend P7 successor.

Huawei-P8-leak1

The two photos show the side and back of the possible successor and from what we see, the device is extremely thin. The device is said to sport a 5.2-inch 1080p display and it looks like Huawei will had a lite variant with a 720p screen. Chinese web site CNMO also states that the company is looking at a P8 Max that will boast a massive 6.8-inch screen. The resolution is unknown.

Either way, we should be at a little over a month away from the new device. We’ll update you when it becomes official.
