Google might offer a new Nexus 5 that supports Project Fi

Nexus_5_Nexus_Logo_TA

Google announced Project Fi last week, which will bring down your cell phone costs considerably. The only catch is that it only works with one phone, the Nexus 6. A decent phone, but it’s too big for a lot of people.

We can only assume that future Nexus phones will also support it too. It has already been rumored that Google will offer not one, but two Nexus phones this year. Huawei and LG seem to be the likely suspects. It’s also likely that Google will end up calling these devices the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 since there is nowhere to go with the current naming scheme. The Nexus 5 refers to a 5-inch display, while the Nexus 6 refers to a 6-inch display. And they can’t call either device a Nexus 7 for obvious reasons.

Google_Project_Fi_video_Nexus_5

In a recent video that Google released about Project Fi, there is a phone that is clearly not the Nexus 6. Many sites have considered it a place holder, which could very well be the case. It looks an awful lot like an updated Nexus 5 though. Now the new Nexus 5 might not look exactly like it, but it’s more than likely this phone represents what is coming later this year.

Samsung is again the world’s top smartphone seller

samsung logo mwc 2015 6

Samsung has recovered the top position in the global smartphone market, according to a Strategy Analytics report covering Q1 2015.

Samsung has lost the sales leadership to Apple in Q4 2014, according to some research firms, while in Strategy Analytics’ estimation the two companies tied for the first place with a 19.6 percent market share. Blowout iPhone 6 sales have helped Apple interrupt Samsung’s years-long run at the top, but it didn’t take long for Samsung to recover.

Samsung has shipped an estimate 83.2 million smartphones in Q1 2015, compared to 74.5 million in the previous quarter. Combined with Apple’s slowdown (61.2 million, compared to 74.5 million in the previous quarter), that gave Samsung a market share of 24.1 percent, a significant lead over Apple’s 17.7 percent.

strategy analytics market share q1 2015 2

Samsung’s jump comes despite the fact that Q1 is typically slower than Q4, and despite of strong competition from Apple at the high-end, and Chinese brands in the mid- and low-end.

Coming in third in Strategy Analytics’ ranking is LenovoMotorola with 5.4 percent, while Huawei ranked fourth, with 5 percent. All other players are lumped in the “others” group (47.7 percent).

Looking at the shifts in market shares quarter over quarter, Samsung is the only top player that has gained share, seemingly at the expense of everyone else. That’s good news for the embattled company, though Samsung also needs the average selling price of its phones to increase in order to return to growth. Samsung just announced its Q1 2015 results today, and ASP has actually decreased, which took its toll on revenue.

All eyes are now on the performance of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Signs are very positive so far, so Samsung will likely preserve its dominance in the quarters to come. But while profits may recover as well, it’s safe to say that the days of explosive growth are over for Samsung.

Huawei Honor 4C launched in China and it’s quite a bargain

Huawei Honor 4c

The Asian smartphone market has been undergoing somewhat of a revolution lately, with numerous local manufacturers churning out handsets that offer incredible value for money. You will struggle to find a better example of just how tightly these Chinese companies are squeezing the margins than Huawei’s new Honor 4C, which has just been released in China.

The Honor 4C is priced at just CNY 799 (around $130) and is available from online Chinese retailers Tmall and Vmall. For this modest cost you will receive a handset with a 720p 5-inch display, octa-core Cortex-A53 powered HiSilicon Kirin 620 SoC, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, 5MP front facing camera and a 2,550mAh battery. The smartphone also comes with 8GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot that supports an additional 32GB of storage and Huawei’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat based EMUI 3.0 software.

Huawei Honor 4c Colors

The Honor 4C is available in a choice of black, blue, gold, pink, or white color options. Unfortunately, the handset doesn’t look like it will be made available outside of China. However, Huawei’s growing presence in Asian and European markets may mean that a similarly compelling budget handset will appear in these regions in the future.

They announced the Huawei Watch and TalkBand B2 last month at Mobile World Congress, which has created a tremendous amount of excitement in the smartwatch and wearable community. Huwaei was generous enough to give us not one, but five TalkBand B2 wearable fitness bands to give away before it’s actually released.

Huawei_TalkBand_B2_Gold

The TalkBand B2 is the followup to last year’s TalkBand B1, and is not your average fitness band. Huawei has created something that is not only high quality, but very innovative. It’s made of light weight aviation aluminum and sports an HD touchscreen. The TalkBand B2 not only tracks all your fitness needs, including sleep monitoring, but you can also use it for phone calls since the heart of the device is actually a Bluetooth headset as well. The headset / tracker easily removes from the aluminum base and can be placed on your ear just like any other Bluetooth headset. On top of all this, it sports 5 day battery life, it’s water and dust resistant, and the bands are interchangeable. Finally, it’s compatible with Android 4.0+ and iOS 7+ devices so everyone can get in on the fun.

Leaked pictures reveal that the Honor 7 will pack a fingerprint scanner

huawei

Earlier today, a tetrad of leaked images appeared online, revealing the design of Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphone of 2015, the Honor 7.

After scrutinising the aforementioned photos, we presume that the Honor 7 will sport a larger screen than its predecessor as its backplate is significantly bigger.

There are also two new cutouts on the plate, which we suspect are for a fingerprint scanner and/or heart rate monitor; both largely-rumored features for the forthcoming handset.

Check out the images below:
