Huawei Mate S now available to purchase at Carphone Warehouse

huawei-mate-s

UK-based retailer Carphone Warehouse today announced that the retailer is now selling the Huawei-made Mate S. Huawei originally announced the Mate S at IFA 2015 earlier this year, deeming it the successor to last year’s Ascend Mate 7.

Consumers can pick up the Mate S from Carphone Warehouse starting at £22.50 per month with a £119.99 down payment. Alternatively, it can be bought outright for £419.99.

As a quick refresher, the handset sports an AMOLED 5.5-inch 1080p 2.5D display with Gorilla Glass 4. It has the Kirin 935 chipset with a quad-core 2.2GHz and quad-core 1.5GHz processor, a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a 2,700mAh battery rated for a full day of use, an improved rear fingerprint scanner, and Force Touch.

The device, for the time being, is only being sold in 32GB variants. Anyone plan on picking one up?

Huawei’s rumored Mate 8 flagship passes through China’s 3C Quality Certification website

Huawei_Mate_8_Invite

Huawei is set to launch its next flagship, the Mate 8, on November 26. But just weeks before the launch, we’re seeing the handset pass through China’s 3C Quality Certification website, toting some insane fast charging capabilities.

Huawei’s new Mate 8 flagship, according to the sheet, supports fast charging at 5V 2A and 9V 2A, bringing the maximum wattage to 18W. Those are some crazy numbers, and could point to a larger 4,000mAh battery in the new smartphone.

huawei-mate-8-chinia-3c-certification

As you might expect with a flagship, the website is showing some impressive specifications on the Mate 8, sporting Huawei’s new Kirin 950 chipset. In addition, the smartphone is rumored to come in two variants, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

As far as the screen goes, we’re expecting to see a 5.7-inch Full HD display on the Mate 8. The handset should take some good photos as well, since it could come with a 13-megapixel rear Sony camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera.

The device should be running Android 6.0 right out of the box, but will have Huawei’s own EMUI 4.0 skin over top of it. Keep in mind that Huawei has yet to confirm any of these specifications, so it’d be wise to take them with a grain of salt. However, these specs aren’t too far off from what we’ve seen in the past.

We’re only a couple of weeks away from launch, where Huawei will let in on all the details of the Mate 8.

Anyone excited?

Nexus 6P camera glass may spontaneously crack

nexus 6p first 48 (17 of 36)

The Nexus 6P is arguably one of the best Nexus devices made, with the brushed aluminium finish and sleek build combining to create “a Nexus flagship worthy of its premium moniker“. Yet, it’s not all positive; some reports suggest its easy to bend and damage Google’s latest flagship and some Reddit users are reporting that the glass panel in front of the camera can also spontaneously crack.

The small piece of glass protecting the camera is made of Gorilla Glass 4 but doesn’t seem to be as durable as its smartphone display equivalent. Some pictures posted online suggest that the glass is spontaneously cracking and one Redditor has come up with a theory why the glass may be cracking.

Summarising u/RedHeadedMenace/:

It seems that most screens – including the Nexus 6P display – have a small plastic shock ring to protect the glass but the Nexus 6P’s camera glass doesn’t have this. As such, any lateral pressure applied by the case can cause the camera glass to crack.

Sounds simple enough right but smartphones are complex pieces of engineering and other users suggest that the phone overheating, sudden changes in temperature or even an internal issue related to the battery swelling could be causing the camera glass to crack.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

It also seems that the cracking occurs at different times, with one user reporting that it happened on the first night they got the phone, another saying it happened within 24 hours and the original poster suggesting it happened spontaneously while the phone was just sitting there.

Huawei and Google are yet to official acknowledge the issue but the number of reports is increasing so it’ll be interesting to see how the company responds. It’s possible that this issue may be affecting just a particular batch of handsets as neither of our units has this problem or it could be that they haven’t cracked yet.

Some users are reporting spontaneously cracking Nexus 6P glass windows

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Glass is increasingly being used in smartphones to great effect, particularly on the new Nexus 6P. It turned out to be somewhat of a necessity given that the device is entirely metallic, but it still manages to look quite good. However, there are some users reporting spontaneously cracking Nexus 6P glass windows – here is one recount of the event via Reddit:

It was sat on a table next to me when I heard the glass snap, leaving a little snowfall of shavings on the table under it. It’s now continuing to crack away to itself..

Nexus 6P glass windowsThere have been several other reports of similar behaviour, though neither Huawei nor Google have responded to any of these claims. The issue seems to stem from combining the window made of Gorilla Glass – which is tightly bound internally – and the metal frame, which is suspected to be exerting forces on the glass window it wasn’t designed to withstand – but naturally this is all just speculation. While it doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem, it doesn’t seem uncommon either, so we’ll see if any official word on the issue is dropped in the next week or two.

What do you think about the spontaneously cracking Nexus 6P glass windows? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

A few Nexus 6P users have reported spontaneously breaking rear glass panels

Nexus_6P_rear_panel_cracked

Some Nexus 6P users have reported on Reddit and Twitter that the rear glass panel that covers the camera, flash and laser autofocus module of the device spontaneously cracked during normal usage. The users have reported that the panel would just brake on its own, without any impact.

Another user has reported that the front glass panel of his Nexus 6P spontaneously cracked during an airline flight while the device was left untouched. After delaying the shipments of the Nexus 6P to customers, Google and Huawei might have found another way to further irritate their customers, as the Nexus 6P might be suffering from a design flaw. Although there is no certainty that the panels did actually brake on their own, there is no way to be sure that this is a design/technical engineering issue. The Nexus 6P’s body is primarily made out of aluminium, which is prone to expanding and contracting during changes in temperature, humidity and air pressure.

For those who had their glass panels crack spontaneously, the positive side of things is that the repair should be covered under the standard hardware warranty that will get your panel replaced for free.

Let us know if your Nexus 6P front or rear glass panel cracked by itself!

Kirin 950 gets benchmarked, shows off major improvements in GPU

Kirin_950_processor_benchmark_110915_1The newly introduced Kirin 950 processor shows off a major improvement in GPU. Here are the results from the chipset’s benchmark results.

The benchmark reveals a significant improvement over the past generation Kirin 935. The new Kirin 950 beats out the Kirin 935 in just about every aspect. However, the new Mali T-880 graphics chipset drastically outperforms the older Mali 628, which can be found in many current Huawei models such as the Mate S. The T-880 was able to out perform the GPU of the older by doubling the frame rate and Gflops. This should make for a much better gaming experience on devices coming up with the included processor, and we can’t wait to test them.

The new four-core 2.53GHz Cortex-A72 brings increased power and speed to the Kirin 950 for a better multitasking experience. The additional four 1.8GHz Cortex-A53 cores will focus on maximizing performance for your basic everyday tasks. We should see the new processor in many Huawei models coming up and it should provide the boost in performance many users have been looking for. Kirin_950_processor_benchmark_110915_2

Android Authority this week – November 8, 2015

nexus 6p vs iphone 6s plus aa (16 of 26)

Android fans, this week brought us a very interesting report on how Google tries to fight Android fragmentation by standardizing components. Contradictory rumors about the camera of the upcoming Galaxy S7 surfaced. Meanwhile, Samsung’s future in the mobile industry came into question, following one prominent analyst’s prediction. Huawei teased the upcoming Mate 8 and launched the Kirin 950 processor. Google released updates for its productivity apps and tweaked the terms of the Android One program. Finally, Motorola launched the Turbo Edition of the Moto G, and more rumors surfaced about the Xiaomi Mi 5.

Inside AA HQ

As we’re getting closer to the holidays, there’s a distinct slowdown in the world of Android. The biggest devices of the season are already familiar; the Marshmallow update cycle is yet to start; and next year’s crop of flagship is still several months away. Hopefully, we’ll still get some exciting new devices by the end of the year, with the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Huawei Mate 8 standing out. And, considering what we’ve been hearing about Google’s plans for next year, there’s always a chance that some juicy leaks will give us what to talk about.

Things  are pretty quiet around AA HQ too, but we still had a few standout posts this week: namely, make sure to check Nirave’s very special throwback hands-on, Krystal’s reviews of the new Droids, and Gary’s blockbuster report on the top SoCs of the moment.

This week, the prize in our weekly giveaway is a Nexus 5X! Good luck, everybody!

Huawei launches the G7 Plus with a 5.5-inch display and a slick design

huawei G7 plusNot to be outdone by HTC, Huawei has launched the G7 Plus with a high resolution 5.5-inch screen and a design that’s strikingly similar to a certain fruity competitor’s flagship phone. While the G7 Plus doesn’t completely look like an iPhone, it definitely does take some serious design inspiration from Apple. Not that it’s a bad thing, but it’s hard not to see it.

The hardware is solid, however, with Huawei packing in a 1080p display and a 13 megapixel camera. There’s an octa-core processor on board with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot. Huawei also managed to fit a fingerprint scanner into the back of the device, too.

The G7 Plus is priced aggressively at around $330, making for a very competitive package. It’ll ship with Android 5.1.

huawei-g7-plus

The mid-range is fast becoming the most competitive market in the industry and Huawei has expanded its mid-range G-series with the new Huawei G7 Plus. The new handset is similar to the Huawei G8, which was announced at IFA 2015 and aims to offer a competitive mid-range experience at an affordable price.

The G7 Plus is the successor to last year’s Huawei G7 and offers an upgraded display and processor compared to the previous model. The front features a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.

The back comes with a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone flash and a square fingerprint sensor beneath it, while the front camera captures 5MP images with Huawei’s beauty level software feature also onboard. Like other Huawei devices, there’s dual SIM capability and comes with LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth, while the software is Android 5.1 Lollipop with Emotion UI v3.1 on top.

The G7 Plus has launched in China and Thailand through the company’s official website at a price of 2095 Yuan, which is approximately $330. It’s currently unknown if the handset will be available outside of these markets at a later date.
