AnTuTu reports most popular smartphones of 2014

AnTuTu, one of the most trusted and stable benchmarking app recently released a report on the top most popular smartphones of 2014. What can be a better way to bid adieu to 2014 than knowing how smartphones performed against each other? We got to see some new names in this year and though being new, they too didn’t fail to amaze.

So, we will kick off with how smartphones are ranked globally first. Xiaomi, currently in the lead, snatched the global market share by 16.90% with its Mi4. Last to last year that is in 2013, Xiaomi was in second place and so, indeed it has progressed since then. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5 being the second and third in the list also got a market share of 15.69% and 15.55% respectively. Not bad Samsung. Some notable runner ups were the Asus Zenfone 5, Meizu MX4 and OnePlus One.

16111530-content

Comparing 2013 with 2014, we see that only Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Google Nexus 5 are the ones which really progressed. On taking a deeper look at the smartphone rankings country-wise, it was the newest OnePlus One that has managed to capture global interest more than Xiaomi. Xiaomi’s large global market share is mostly because of its popularity in Mainland China. It also stands to prove that China is growing to become a big smartphone market.

Keeping these statistics in mind, I noticed a new trend. That is the rise of Chinese OEMs. Definitely, if we group all the Chinese firms together, they will form a large market share. Also, Samsung held the largest global market share with four of its devices in the top 10. And where the hell are you? Sony? LG? HTC? I don’t see them anywhere on the global list. They sure need to pump out some serious efforts or else this year will also go in vain.

HTC One M7 gets an unofficial Lollipop ROM

LlabTooFeR, a recognized contributer at XDA has recently developed a new custom ROM based off of Lollipop with Sense 6.0 named MaximusHD. The dev is widely known for making mods, tweaks and software developments especially for HTC devices. This time around it was HTC One M7’s turn to get the lollipop flavour.

MaximusHD has a nice overall outlook and almost identical resemblance to the stock HTC’s Lollipop update. It includes all the stock features as well as some “extra features”. Some notable ones being the ability to remove unneeded apps, ability to install additional mods and improved audio/video capabilities. The ROM is also pre-rooted so that you can start restoring your app backups almost instantly. It comes with enhanced battery management at the core based on Google’s Project ‘Volta’ so that you won’t need to be power-conscious all the time.

Updated Kernel and OEM apps are also some of the highlights. Although it has been announced that the M7 will be getting an official lollipop update from HTC, but for those who just can’t wait, here you go. For further info on how to install this ROM please be sure to check out the XDA thread which states all the required steps and prerequisites in a very crystal clear way.

As always, be sure to back everything up including your ROM before you start messing around with your phone just so if anything goes wrong, you can always roll back to stock.

HTC has more phones in the pipeline for your desire according to latest leak

htc_desire_626_upleaks_02

Although much of the latest rumor frenzy surrounding HTC involves the forthcoming HTC One M9 smartphone, a new leak from Twitter leakster @upleaks shows an HTC Desire 626 is in the works. Earlier this month at CES 2015, HTC announced a couple new devices for their HTC Desire line of budget smartphones. The HTC Desire 826 is heading to Asian markets while the HTC Desire 320 is off to the U.K. and Germany. Presumably, based on the model number, the HTC Desire 626 will fall in the middle of these devices spec-wise.

Sources indicate the Desire 626 will have a 5-inch display running at 1280 x 720 resolution, a 1.7 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, a 13 MP rear-facing camera and 5 MP front-facing camera, and a 2,000 mAh battery. The new smartphone will come with Android KitKat, but HTC is planning to upgrade it to Android Lollipop down the road. Sources also believe HTC may be working on an even lower end version of the same device with a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 processor and only 1 GB of RAM.

No pricing or planned market information has leaked to this point, so it is not clear whether the Desire 626 will be available in the U.S. It is possible we may see more information about the device surface at MWC 2015.

New pictures of the HTC One M9 leak out

htconem9new

After stumbling across some shady looking images of the HTC One M9 Plus, a new leak is now giving us a fresh glimpse of what could almost certainly be the One M9 which is expected to break cover on the 1st of March.

The smartphone is only shown from the front and not the back, so we don’t have a complete look of the device yet. But from these images, it’s clear that HTC is yet again going to score full marks in the design department.

The BoomSound speakers appear to be well in place, while the front camera looks slightly enlarged, giving credence to reports of the company using a 13-megapixel or 4-megapixel “Ultrapixel” sensor with the new flagship.

It is also noticeable that HTC has moved the power button to the right near the volume rocker, which makes it all the more easier to access. The display size isn’t expected to be increased with the One M9, but it’s good to know that HTC is willing to make changes to what is already a stellar design.

The smartphone is expected to be sporting a 5 inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM, the octa core Snapdragon 810 SoC, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, a 2,840 mAh battery and Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sense 7.0 on board.

What We Know: HTC One M9 (Hima) rumors and leaks thus far

Last year’s HTC One M8 was one of the hottest Android devices to be released, mainly because it featured a premium aluminum unibody in a slim package. With expectations among consumers rising, HTC has their work cut out for them to top an already good design with their upcoming One M9.

Rather than passing along every single rumor that comes across our plate we’ve opted to cover only those devices that we find most relevant. To that end, the “What We Know” column aims to highlight the flagship smartphone models that are looming on the horizon.

What you’ll find below is a list of rumors, leaks, speculation, images, and other information that pertains to the HTC One M9. We’ve done our best to gather up the juiciest stuff floating around, even if it conflicts with other reports. Unless otherwise noted, this is all to be considered unofficial and unconfirmed.

Note: This post will be updated continually until such time that the device is announced by HTC and made official.

Design

The one thing that HTC has perfected on its flagship devices is the design. The HTC One M8 was very well-received and even critically acclaimed for being one of the first Android devices to feature an all-metal encasing, so it is expected that it will continue that trend.

The One M9 is expected to come within a 144.3 x 69.4 x 9.6 mm frame. Comparing it to its predecessor, it is 2.1 mm shorter vertically and 1.2 mm thinner horizontally. The One M9 also comes in at 2 mm thicker, most likely to support the bigger battery expected in the device.

HTC One M9 front

In the first batch of leaks from NoWhereElse, their images depict that the reasoning for the slimming down is due to the fact that HTC removed the outer metal rim seen on the One M8.

To give a better perspective of the aesthetic changes, Senior Editor of NoWhereElse posted an image via his Twitter account detailing the differences. The range from the lack of metal rim, front sensor/flash, and a smaller gap between the HTC logo on the bottom of the display.

HTC One M9 vs M8

Another change made to the design is the location of the lock buttons. They now will join the volume rockers on the right-hand side of the device, whereas it used to be on the top of the device. The button placement can be seen in the latest leaks obtained by NoWhereElse from case renders for the One M9.

Display

The HTC One M9 has been rumored to have a screen size ranging from 5 to 5.5 inches, with the latter being more widely supported, and even backed by infamous leaker upleaks. HTC will not join the fray of QHD displays, but retain FHD support.

A 5 inch display sporting 1080p resolution comes in at 443 ppi, so the picture will definitely be crisp. It is also expected that HTC will stick with LCD display technology and not move to AMOLED, although that is unconfirmed.

While nothing has been announced as far has what glass the display will feature, it is safe to assume that the device will feature Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass 4, as will other flagships of 2015.

Camera

If there was any area of the HTC One M8 that was lacking, it was definitely in the camera category. HTC kept trying to boost their UltraPixel setup claiming that quality wasn’t related to the amount of pixels. Consumers voiced their opinions of their distaste for the 4 UltraPixel camera seen on the One M8, and it seems as they have listened.

HTC One M9 Hima rear

According to upleaks, the device will now boast a massive 20.7 megapixel camera in the rear and a reported 13 megapixel or 4 UltraPixel camera up front. The 13 megapixel camera for the front-facing shooter has been reported more often, and even showed up on an AnTuTu Benchmark, but the UltraPixel setup hasn’t been ruled out entirely.

Internal Hardware

The internal aspects of the HTC One M9 are the part of the device that is most widely agreed upon, as it has been seen on the AnTuTu Benchmark as well as reported by upleaks. The device will feature Qualcomm’s 2.0 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor that will be backed up by 3 GB of RAM, and an Adreno 430 GPU.

HTC One M9 benchmark

It is unknown if the rumored overheating issues on the Snapdragon 810 processor will cause any delays for the release of the One M9, but according to Bloomberg, Samsung has already jumped ship.

The One M9 will feature 32 GB of ROM and will have the option to expand up to 128 GB. Including an external microSD slot on their devices have been a staple for HTC and is one of the reasons why consumers like their devices so much.

To top off all of the internals, a rumored 2,850 mAh battery will power the HTC One M9. This is a significant boost from the HTC One M8’s 2,600 mAh battery. As always with HTC, the battery is expected to not be removable.

OS

HTC’s latest device will be running Android 5.0 Lollipop straight out the box. While some of the devices HTC has released are already receiving the latest Android OS update, none have been shipped with a device before. On top of Android Lollipop will come HTC’s custom user interface (UI) called Sense.

The Sense UI version on the One M9 will be updated to 7.0, up from version 6.0 that is currently seen on the One M7 and M8. HTC has done a fairly good job keeping their new update under-wraps and little is known about it, except for a few screenshots from You Mobile.

The images barely give us a peek into what to expect from Sense 7.0, except for the fact that it features Material Design and it has newly added detailed battery stats. It is also expected to feature an avatar maker and other features such as BlinkFeed.

Launch

It has been announced that HTC will debut the HTC One M9 (Hima) March 1st at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this year. It is was announced by an image that stated “Utopia in progress.”

Here’s the leaked HTC One M9

Referred by its codename “Hima”, the HTC One M9 has apparently leaked, and it bares a very similar resemblance to last year’s M8 phone. We are actually still not sure if “Hima” is the code word for the M9 flagship or its rumored phablet counterpart that will debut alongside it on March 1st, according to HTC’s latest invite.

HTC-One-M9-leak

The front of the phone shows nothing new for HTC’s latest flagship, with an extreme resemblance to the M8. We still have some noticable bezels going on, and HTC has stuck to keeping their logo on the bottom part, contrast to what most users has protested. On the backside we have a little bit of difference, mainly being the block shaped camera which is presumed to be a 20-megapixel sensor instead of Ultrapixels. It’s hard to see if there will be a duo-camera on top because the picture is cropped, but it looks unlikely.

Other specs for HTC’s One M9 include a 5 inch 1080p screen, Snapdragon 810 CPU and Adreno 430 GU, 3GB RAM, 5-megapixel front camera and 2,870 mAh battery.

While this is just a leak and unconfirmed to be correct, what’re your thoughts on this supposed upcoming HTC flagship?

Deal Alert: HTC One (M7) electric blue is now just $199, no contract

htc-one-m7-blue-bb

HTC has been on quite a roll over the last few years, introducing the revamped One series in 2013 with a full unibody design, a unique UltraPixel camera experience and wonderful front facing speakers. While the One M8 has been out for a while now and the M9 is just around the corner, that doesn’t mean that the original One M7 isn’t still worthy of our attention.

With an attractive design and still reasonably decent hardware powered by a Snapdragon 600 with 2GB of RAM, the HTC One M7 still packs specs that are more than capable of providing a solid Android experience. For those looking for a good deal, Best Buy is offering the electric blue model of the One M7 for $200, off contract. That’s a heck of a bargain, especially considering the nearly two-year old flagship has specs that easily beat out many similarly priced newer mid and low range handsets.

Keep in mind this isn’t an unlocked model, though you do have the choice between the Verizon, AT&T or Sprint models.

Android 4.4.4 rolling out to AT&T branded HTC One M8

htc one m8 outdoors (1 of 17)

While some HTC One M8 owners are eagerly waiting for the Android Lollipop update to appear, AT&T has finally gotten around to updating its model of the handset with last year’s Android 4.4.4 update. The same update rolled out to other carrier branded handsets all the way back in October.

The 3.42.502.1 software versions brings with it a host of bug fixes and tweaks, including improvements to HD Voice and the handset’s battery life. However, HTC’s Eye Experience software suit is sadly absent from the update, as it is still listed as in the certification stage on HTC’s website. Speaking of which, Lollipop still appears to be in the integration stage for the AT&T handset variant, meaning that it has not yet reached certification. The same applies for other carriers as well.

Here is a copy of the changelog:

  • Enables HD Voice
  • Updates Android OS to Android 4.4.4
  • Security enhancement
  • Bluetooth enhancement
  • Adds AMBS Cloud Messaging Integration
  • Adds Copy and Paste camera feature
  • Adds Usage Manager App
  • Improves battery performance
  • Updates AT&T Ready2Go
  • Updates Visual Voicemail

If you haven’t received the update notification yet, you can always head on over to Settings > Software > Check for updates to manually force a check.
