HTC One E9 pics and specs leak: octa-core and Quad HD screen in a plastic body

Last year’s One E8 was the plastic equivalent of the top-of-the-line M8. For the E9, which just broke cover thanks to China’s TENAA certification agency, HTC appears to be shaking things up quite a bit.
The device, bearing the “E9pw” code number, has been spotted in the database of TENAA (China’s telecom authority) by Engadget Chinese, along with images, dimensions, and a handful of specs.
The pictures show a plastic design that is similar to HTC’s recent Desire series phones, like the Desire Eye or the Desire 826. The device is flatter and thinner than the metal M9, at 7.54 millimeters, and features a two-tone color scheme with what appear to be golden accents. The most distinctive design element is clearly the large camera module on the back, though its placement very close to the edge of the phone is a bit questionable.
In terms of specs, the listing reveals a Quad HD screen of 5.5-inches (a bump up from the M9’s Full HD), an octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz (probably a MediaTek model), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 2,800-mAh battery, and a 20MP rear camera.
The One E8 had limited worldwide availability, though it did make it to the States via Sprint, and it’s likely that the One E9 will follow the same path. HTC has recently hinted at an upcoming “huge announcement” that would bring “extreme differentiation between Samsung and the iPhone.” Whether that’s the One E9 or a different device (the One M9 Plus comes to mind), we’ll find out in mid to late March.

Chinese launch of unspecified HTC device hinted by press invite
Invites being sent out to press members for an event hosted by HTC in China point to a launch of an unspecified device. The company is utilizing metal plates with March 11-17 along with Chinese lettering and that, of course, has sparked speculation. It is expected that HTC launches either the One M9 Plus or One E9, maybe both, in China by the end of next week.
The metal plate of the invitation would be favorable for the One M9 Plus to be announced because of its own design. Why not announce a metal phone with a metal invitation? Makes sense to me. The One E9 is plastic and it just would not make sense to give a premium-feeling invitation for a device that conveys the opposite. The One E9 has received certification is China and the One M9 Plus has yet to be announced anywhere else.
Basically, it is a complete tossup to figure out what HTC has coming.

HTC One E9 gets certified by TENAA for Chinese release
Due to its certification by TENAA, we know what HTC has coming to consumers in China. The HTC One E9, seen above, will be released in China with a plastic design while maintaining high-end specifications. TENAA, which is the equivalent to the United States’ FCC, included specifications with its certification. It revealed: 156.5×76.5×7.54mm measurements, a 5.5-inch display, and a 2800mAh battery. Allegedly, the display has 2560×1440 resolution and the processor inside is MediaTek’s MT6795.

HTC One E9 specs and images surface
Whilst the HTC One M9 was only just released, it doesn’t mean HTC have sat back and relaxed. According to a new leak, a handset called the HTC One E9 is in the works which gives a flatter design.
With a 5.5-inch display, which reportedly may be Quad-HD, the E9 is said to be powered by a 64-bit MediaTek processor and feature a 13-megapixel front camera and 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera on the back.
There’s currently no launch date or pricing, but if you don’t like the curves of the newly announced HTC One M9 then this may be for you.

HTC’s bigger, flatter One E9 smartphone poses for the camera
If you thought HTC’s One M9 was just too small or too bulky, you’ll be glad to hear that the company has something bigger in store… yes, literally. Chinese regulators recently spoiled the surprise for the One E9, a 5.5-inch cousin to the 5-inch M9 that ditches the curved metal back for a flatter (and somewhat Desire Eye-like) body. This isn’t just a re-skin à la the One E8, folks. There may be big changes under the hood, too. Well-known tipster Upleaks claims that the E9 will switch from a Snapdragon 810 processor to a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek chip, and that you’ll get a super-sharp Quad HD screen instead of the M9’s 1080p display. A “standard” version could also ship with a regular 13-megapixel front camera, while a “high” version would carry the M9’s low light friendly 4MP UltraPixel cam.
Whether or not you get the One E9 in your corner of the globe is up in the air. The E8 made it to the US through Sprint, but there’s no guarantees that its successor will make the same leap. Also, it’s not certain just when HTC will pull the trigger. The company recently teased more big news in mid-to-late March, but there’s no guarantee that it was referring to the E9.

HTC Exec: Samsung is only interested in money, Xiaomi won’t last long

MWC 2015 arguably saw a complete role reversal from Samsung and HTC, with HTC doing little new in terms of design, while Samsung brought its A-game, melding glass and metal into a unibody design that is undeniably more attractive (to most) than previous Galaxy S iterations.
Understandably, opinions have varied greatly when it comes to the One M9 vs the Galaxy S6 (and/or Edge), with some absolutely applauding Samsung’s efforts and shunning HTC’s, while others feel that HTC still has the superior product. But what does HTC think about all this? While far from a corporate statement, HTC Chief Marketing Officer Idris Mootee recently expressed his opinion in an interview, stating that Samsung is essentially in the game only for money.
HTC Chief Marketing Officer Idris Mootee recently expressed his opinion in an interview, stating that Samsung is essentially in the game only for money.
In the interview, Mootee was asked about HTC’s position in the premium market, a space that Apple and Samsung dominate. Mootee said it is important to create a connection between products and the individual, something HTC strives for. As for the competition? The exec praised Apple, saying the company has been very successfuly in connecting people to “something that’s bigger than just an electronic company.” Further, the exec says that Apple stands for something, bigger than just a brand. On the other hand, Samsung, “a massive brand and enterprise, doesn’t stand for anything except for profit”.
Wait… Samsung, a company, is interested in profit? I’m shocked. Shameless snark aside, the root point that the executive is probably trying to make is that HTC and Apple have a certain consumer in mind, and a certain philosophy that drives them. For Apple, this philosophy and customer base has helped push them to the top, for HTC, they have a loyal fanbase, even if their marketshare is minuscule. Does this same approach hold true for Samsung? While the company certainly has made changes to improve its “mass appeal” with the Galaxy S6 that may have alienated some of their original fanbase (no microSD, no-removable battery), personally I feel it’s a little harsh to suggest Samsung doesn’t hope to connect with their customers on any level.
Xiaomi’s latest high-end offering, the Mi Note.
On a related note, in the same interview, the HTC exec also went after Xiaomi:
lot of people talk about Xiaomi. It’s not really our competitor. I don’t think they’ll ever make it to the U.S., for a million reasons we all know. And I think their business model has a very short lifespan.
Going after one of the fastest growing companies in the world, and throwing some shots in at Samsung as well — does the HTC exec make good points about Samsung and Xiaomi? Or is this just sour grapes from a company that has been heavily pushing the premium materials angle for years now, with only modest success?

Hot on the heels of EE’s announcement earlier today, UK operator Vodafone is now taking pre-orders for HTC’s flagship smartphone of 2015, the One (M9). The handset is available to purchase on any of its 2-year plans starting at £26.50 a month with a £169 down payment.

HTC One M8 receives unofficial Sense 7 ROM from SkyDragon
HTC has recently announced its new One M9 handset, and with it came the company’s new Android overlay, Sense 7. Those who invested in an M8 instantly began wondering when their devices would receive the update. At MWC, HTC confirmed that the phone would in fact get the update, though they didn’t provide any sort of timeframe. But, if you don’t mind rooting your device and doing a little work, you may be able to get your hands on the Sense 7 software unofficially. The team at SkyDragon has ported the latest Sense 7 software to their custom ROM, which is now available for download.
So what will you get with the new ROM? Sense 7 on the One M8 (shown off in the preview video above) brings HTC’s new Sense Home widget, which suggests frequently-used apps to you based on your location. Additionally, you’ll get an all new camera UI, theming options, Blinkfeed improvements, a fourth softkey button option, Dolby Audio surround sound and much more. If you’d like to see our hands-on comparison between the One M9 running Sense 7 and the One M8 running Sense 6, you can do so here.
Since this is a brand new ROM, we can’t vouch for its stability. Though, SkyDragon ROMs have proven stable in the past, so it might be worthwhile to try it out. And just like when you’re flashing any other ROMs, be sure to read the XDA thread in its entirety before flashing, including FAQs and other notices. Also, the developer notes that if you’re on the latest Sense GSM Lollipop firmware, the only thing you’ll need to flash is the new ROM. If you’re interested in trying out the ROM for yourself, you can find everything you need on the XDA thread. Just keep in mind that you are doing so at your own risk.
Any One M8 owners out there willing to try out the new Sense 7 ROM?

New port brings HTC BlinkFeed to all Android 4.4+ devices
The XDA developer community has been ever active with regards to bringing features from one devices to the rest of the pack. Popular XDA developer, xpirt, has done something similar today by bringing the HTC BlinkFeed app to all Android 4.4 running devices.
It’s as simple as installing apks uploaded by the developer and you’re good to go. BlinkFeed essentially gives you a quick peek of all your social feeds in one glance, rather than having to individually open them. This has been one of the highlights of HTC smartphones over the past couple of years and starting now, non-HTC device owners can get this feature on their devices as well.
There are a series of four apks that need to be installed in order for this to work. You can find them here. After sideloading and installing these apks, you will have to install the necessary plugins for Google+, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn. You can choose to have some or all of these plugins installed. Find them here.
Make sure you head over to the XDA forums for more details on how to make this feature work on your Android 4.4+ running smartphone.
