HTC UH OH Protection: 1 year free replacement for cracked screen or water damage

htc_uh_oh

It happens. You drop your phone. It gets wet. Life gets in the way. And, sadly, for a lot of us, this sort of thing happens within the first year of owning a smartphone. HTC, recognizing this, and seeing an opportunity, has introduced a terrific new program to address this situation.

Called UH OH Protection, it’s a service plan that comes free of charge with HTC’s smartphones. Essentially, it works like this: if your HTC One M9 ends up with water damage or a cracked screen in the first year, HTC will replace it for free. Period. What’s more, HTC will even extend you a free replacement should you switch wireless providers in the first 12 months.

How does it work? Simple. You reach out to HTC either through phone or chat. From there you have two options:

  1. You have a replacement model sent to you the next business day; HTC will hold $299 on your credit card until they get your old one back.
  2. You send the damaged device in first and HTC sends you a new one within two days of receipt. No credit card holds required for this option.

For those of you who make it through the first year without any UH OH situations, HTC has something special for you, too. Customers who do not take advantage of the program automatically receive $100 towards the purchase of a future HTC One smartphone.

HTC is launching the UH OH Protection program with its One M9 smartphone, which is expected to go on sale shortly. If you’re interested in learning more about UH OH Protection, HTC is hosting a live Q&A today at 12:00PM EST/9:00 PT.

Uh-Oh: HTC’s new warranty program offers some serious benefits (US only)

htc one m9 80

HTC is extending its Advantage warranty program with new benefits and a longer validity period. The new program is called Uh-Oh, and while the name is funny, the benefits it offers are nothing to laugh at.

Customers who sign up for Uh-Oh will receive a free one-time replacement if their One M9 or One M8 suffers a broken screen or any water damage. The coverage lasts for 12 months from the purchase of a device, and all users are automatically signed up upon purchasing a device. Like Advantage before it, the Uh-Oh program will be available in the United States only. It’s not clear yet if other devices besides the M9 and M8 will be included, but we know for sure that Desire series phones are not covered.

Compared to last year’s Advantage, the new Uh-Oh doubles the coverage time and extends it to water damage, one of the most common ways to ruin a smartphone. Even if you don’t damage your phone, there are some benefits – HTC will give you a new device if you switch carriers (you have to give back the old one), and, if you don’t use any of these replacements, you will get $100 credit to use against a future HTC One purchase.

For more details, HTC will be holding a live customer Q&A session with US president Jason Mackenzie from 12PM ET/9AM PT. Watch the live stream here. Mackenzie is pretty confident that Uh-Oh will help differentiate the M9: “Our competitors look at cracked screens and broken phones as a way to milk more money from [their] customers,” he said. “We see it as a way to change the game, and give customers a premium experience with a premium product. We think the Uh Oh Program is something that will tip people over the edge.”

Uh-Oh looks like a nice little bonus for One M9 buyers, especially if you’re a butterfingers like me (and you don’t like bulky cases.) Too bad it’s US-only at this point.

Is this warranty program something that would sway you towards picking up the M9 when it becomes available later this month?

HTC’s “Uh-Oh” service will offer a one-time replacement of your broken device

HTC_One_M9_Gunmetal_BackHTC will be hosting an event tomorrow called “Uh-Oh,” and if it’s anything like HTC Advantage that they did last year with the M8, this will be another program to offer you a one-time replacement of your device in case you bust it up. The “Uh-Oh” program goes a bit beyond six months of cracked screen replacements, though.

The broken phone coverage period will reportedly be extended to a full year instead of six months, and it does cover everything that happens to the phone, including water damage, not just busted glass. There are a handful of other benefits that will come along with this new program, too, including support for switching carriers. The details are a little fuzzy on that, but it’d be nice if HTC could help further subsidize the price of a device if you wanted to jump to another carrier halfway through your contract.

There’s also supposedly a trade-in program for devices in the works that will offer potential buyers up to $100 towards a new HTC One. HTC certainly won’t be the first (or last) to try to use trade-in incentives to switch other customers over to their brand of devices.

HTC will stream its big “Uh-Oh” announcement Wednesday at 9am PT

htc one m9 8

HTC is counting down the hours until it’s big “Uh-Oh” announcement, which will begin on Wednesday, March 18th at 9am PT (11am CT). As of right now, we’re not quite sure what the term “Uh-Oh” means in this case. HTC has posted the countdown video on its site, and you can find it by heading to HTC.com/us/uh-oh.

The HTC event that’s happening tomorrow was alluded to by the company’s own Jason Mackenzie just yesterday. On Twitter, he said:

HTC has a BIG announcement for US customers on Wednesday. #HTCOneM9

While Mackenzie didn’t specify what details will be outed in the announcement, we have a feeling that it has to do with the One M9‘s U.S. availability. Multiple carriers in the United States have announced that they’ll eventually carry the One M9 sometime in “early Spring”, though we haven’t heard any information beyond that.

Last year when HTC announced the One M8, the company made it available exclusively on Verizon that same day. Needless to say, that got customers pretty excited, so we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what we hear tomorrow. For now that’s just speculation, so we’ll need to wait for official word from HTC during the “Uh-Oh” event. If you’d like to watch the event, you can check out the YouTube video below. If not, Android Authority will surely keep you updated as HTC announces more details.

If the HTC One M9 becomes available tomorrow, will you pick one up?

HTC publishes BoomSound Connect, HTC Connect and HTC Tasks to Google Play

HTC BoomSound Connect

In the past few years, we’ve seen more and more manufacturers publish their own apps to the Play Store, which allows them to easily update individual apps without the need to push out an entire software update to each device. Ahead of the upcoming One M9 launch, HTC has published three new apps to the Google Play Store which will not only be present on the One M9, but will be available for devices running Sense 7. HTC BoomSound Connect and HTC Connect will control connections through Bluetooth, DLNA, Miracast devices and AllPlay speakers. HTC Tasks has also been added, which is just the new version of the tasks app.

For starters, BoomSound Connect (pictured above) helps control connections to AllPlay speakers by acting as a remote to setup its Wi-Fi, choose different songs to play, and share songs to playlists. Judging by the screenshots, the app seems easy to control and fits in well with the Sense 7 design guidelines.

HTC Connect

Next we have HTC Connect which, unlike BoomSound Connect that acts as a remote, allows your HTC device to stream music, photos and videos to connected devices like televisions and compatible audio systems. To activate Connect, you can swipe up from anywhere on the device with three fingers to bring up the menu. HTC Connect can be used with AllPlay, Blackfire, Bluetooth, DLNA and Miracast-compatible devices.

HTC Tasks

The updated HTC Tasks app looks similar to the Sense 6 version of the app. It still allows you to sync your device with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and Google accounts in order to keep your tasks up to date. That’s really all we have from this one so far, so we’ll need to wait awhile to see if HTC will sneak in any major enhancements alongside the launch of the M9.

For now, these apps are incompatible with all devices. That will surely change once the One M9 is out, and once older HTC devices begin to receive Sense 7.

Watch HTC’s big announcement right here

HTC_One_M9_Silver_Back

Yesterday, HTC Americas president Jason Mackenzie teased a big announcement for tomorrow for U.S. customers. We have no idea what it is. It could be as simple as an official release date for the One M9 or it could be a brand new product. It’s also possible that HTC could launch some sort of special promotion to entice you to buy the One M9.

If you remember, Jason Mackenzie said earlier this month that they will announce something ahead of the M9 launch that will drive M9 sales. Whatever they are going to announce tomorrow, it’s probably something that you won’t want to miss it.

We have the live stream video right after the break so tune in tomorrow (3/18/15) at 12:00 pm ET / 9:00 am PT.

You may want to take that HTC One M9 overheating report with a big grain of salt

htc one m9 58

According to a report that surfaced earlier today from Dutch website Tweakers, the HTC One M9 running the popular benchmarking app GFXBench suffers from significant overheating issues. The website measured the One M9 along with various other high-end devices through a thermal camera, and reported each of the device’s temperatures. The One M9 became significantly hotter than all the other handsets, reaching up to extreme temperatures of 55.4 degrees Celsius, or just over 131 degrees Fahrenheit. In the image provided, no other handset even comes close to the One M9’s numbers. Take a look at the image below for more information.

2000587739

The report states that these high temperatures were reached only when running the benchmark app. When playing games like Asphalt 8 and Assassin’s Creed: Pirates, the temperature stayed around 42.5 degrees Celsius.

The reasoning behind this overheating issue? Most notably, the One M9 is running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor, which hasn’t exactly gotten the best track record for its performance since its release. Samsung ultimately decided to pass on the processor with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets, possibly due to overheating issues that the processor has been rumored to have.

Comparatively, a few reports have also stated that the Snapdragon 810 doesn’t cause any overheating issues whatsoever. Anandtech tested the chip, and essentially said there were no overheating issues to be found. Now, of course the processor will run differently when its performing in different handsets, so the claims against overheating issues in this instance with the One M9 don’t really stand up.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves on the processor overheating issues, there are a few other variables that come in to play. For starters, the HTC One M9 hasn’t been released yet. The handset in the test was not running even close to final software, which likely plays a big part in its overheating troubles. HTC recently delayed the launch of the One M9 in Taiwan to make some last minute software adjustments. While there’s no information on the software fixes it’s receiving, HTC is obviously still working on the handset to ensure the device’s stability.

htc one m9 1

The last thing we need to think about is the feasibility of this data. A metal device reaching temperatures of over 131 degrees could be dangerous to the human skin, and would likely be unbearable to hold for an extended period of time. By no means am I saying that the benchmark scores are inaccurate or that the temperature is wrong. But what I am saying is that HTC probably wouldn’t release a handset that overheats this much. They’ve been testing this device for months with the exact same chipset, and have presumably made adjustments where they see fit. Especially given the company’s financial standpoint in the mobile division, you’d think HTC wouldn’t overlook an issue this major.

The device we get in our hands in a few weeks will undoubtably be different from the device Tweakers is using in their report. And although the website’s findings coincide with just about everything we’ve been hearing about the Snapdragon 810, we need to withhold our judgement until we actually get our hands on the consumer-ready devices.

HTC One M9 revealed to be suffering from overheating issues, blame the Snapdragon 810 SoC

onem9overheating

The Snapdragon 810 chip is known to be suffering from overheating issues and the HTC One M9 appears to be the latest victim. One of the demo units of the handset was shown to be getting an overheating warning back during the MWC a couple of weeks ago. If this wasn’t enough to raise alarm bells, a new report certainly will.

It is said that while running the GFXBench app, the smartphone had a temperature of 55 Celsius (131 Fahrenheit) which is quite out of the ordinary. A regular smartphone would heat up to 30-40 Celsius, so it’s clear that the One M9 has some serious issues which could hamper usage.

It is said that these issues were the reason Samsung backed out of using the Snapdragon 810 on the Galaxy S6. The Snapdragon 810 reportedly starts heating up only on certain voltage levels. Keeping that in mind, this could be a complex problem for Qualcomm to solve.

Will this impact your decision to get the HTC One M9? Sound off below.

HTC releases its Fun Fit fitness tracking app to the Play Store

HTC Fun Fit

HTC has just released its new fitness tracking app, called Fun Fit, to the Google Play Store. The app is compatible with devices running Android 4.1 and up, and aims to make fitness fun by connecting you and your Facebook friends together.

The app is easy to use and sports a familiar HTC design language. It will count your steps throughout the day, provide daily activity history including distance and calories burned, and will also supply daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly record reports. Oddly enough, you can only sign in as a guest or with your Facebook account information, not with your HTC account. And for now, you can only sign in on one device at a time. We’re sure support for multiple devices and more login options will be added in the future, as this is very clearly a version 1.0 release. To get some more information on the app, take a look at the screenshots below.

HTC’s Fun Fit app isn’t too heavy on the features and doesn’t really bring too many new notable enhancements to the table. But if you’re waiting to see how the app progresses in the future or are just a big fan of HTC’s design language, the app can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store.
