The HTC One M7 just might get the Android 5.1 update after all…
It’s just a couple of days ago that we reported that the stock variant of the HTC One M7 would be marooned on Android 5.0.2 while the GPE M7 would be updated to Android 5.1. Understandably, this news upset some M7 owners who were confused about how the 5.1 update could be classed as a major update to the Android operating system as it consists mainly of tweaks and bug fixes. There may be some cause for hope though.
I heard you all on M7 5.1 for Carrier versions. Many of the fixes are already in our current SW, but understand your concerns. Stay tuned.
— Mo Versi (@moversi) March 20, 2015
As you can see from the tweet above, the outcry would seem to have had some effect on HTC, with the Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, again taking to Twitter to discuss the matter. The tweet is not a concrete commitment to updating the HTC One M7 handset to Android 5.1 by any means, but it’s better than a flat-out negative. Mo Versi did emphasize that many of the Android 5.1 bug fixes had already been applied to the current firmware.
With readers making comments such as the one below, it’s clear that HTC might have made a mistake in deciding to update the GPE version to Android 5.1, but not the stock variant that uses the same hardware.
“Time to look into a new phone and new phone manufacturing company as htc just lost my support.”
If HTC does indeed update the stock M7 to Android 5.1 despite it already having received the 2 years of promised ‘Major’ updates, it could garner HTC some much-needed goodwill and loyalty from its fans. This goodwill and loyalty could well translate into sales and that is something that HTC can’t afford to throw away. We will have to wait for HTC to stick or twist regarding this matter, but here’s hoping that the can see the opportunity to grab some good PR from the situation. I guess we will have to wait until Mo Versi mentions the topic on Twitter again to find out the outcome.

HTC One M8 owners apparently not feeling the urge to upgrade to the HTC One M9
With every flagship release from smartphone manufacturers, those loyal to the particular manufacturer will often switch from last year’s flagship to the latest model. However, it looks like the HTC One M9 might be the exception to the rule as it’s been suggested that owners of the older HTC One M8 flagship aren’t feeling the […]

No Android 5.1 for HTC One M7
HTC’s Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, has confirmed via Twitter that Android 5.1 is coming only to the Google Play edition of the One M7.
@kennymaclean Only the GPE version of M7 will receive 5.1. Our target is early April. Thanks.
— Mo Versi (@moversi) March 18, 2015
The company promised two years of update support, and it has completed that fufillment already. Nonetheless, Android 5.1 is a much needed update over 5.0 since it fixes so many problems with that version of the OS. As AndroidAuthority‘s Andrew Grush speculates, HTC may be thinking that most users of the One M7 will or already have upgraded to another smartphone, which is why another update is not needed.

[Deal] HTC RE Camera discounted 50% through Best Buy
The RE Camera was launched last fall for consumers that wanted a personal camera with style and simplicity. Clearly, the device was targeted by HTC at the action-oriented. While the RE Camera impressed many with its simply controls and decent quality, the price moved consumers in another direction. Today, the RE Camera can be purchased through Best Buy for 50% less than its normal retail price. The device, which has a 16MP lens and is waterproof, is available for $99 with free shipping.
Both white and blue models are still available as the orange color option has become sold out online. There are even cheaper options, too, if $99 is still to much. Best Buy has open-box units starting at $74.

Watch: 10 HTC odd short films with Robert Downey Jr. to promote the One M9
Remember back in 2013 when HTC signed a deal with Robert Downey Jr. reported to be worth roughly $1 billion? You know, those whole “Here’s to Change” commercials with the hispter trolls washing cars and such? Well, apparently HTC likes RDJ so much that they brought him back for some more work. That, or he’s still fulfilling his contractual obligations.
Whatever the case, he’s back in a series of 10 strange yet seemingly connected short films. All told, the collection runs less than five minutes toal.
According to HTC:
The M9 Project is a series of shorts representing the creative collaboration between Robert Downey Jr., Russell Scott of Jetset Studios, and HTC. Using color as a unifying metaphor, the shorts channel many artistic influences into a narrative that finds Downey and his scene–‐partner, Brian Schaeffer navigating a genre–‐bending series of adventures.

HTC names Cher Wang as CEO; Peter Chou to lead future product innovation
There’s a bit of a shakeup at the top of HTC this morning as the hardware maker has named a new CEO. In effective immediately is HTC co-founder Cher Wang while previous CEO Peter Chou transitions into a new position of future product innovation.
The change should be a smooth process and one that HTC wants at its core; the last few years saw Chou focus on new technologies and products.
“We are seeing rapid changes in the industry, with the smartphone as our personal hub connecting us to a growing world of smart devices. We pioneered the smartphone industry; now we are applying that thinking to realize the potential of a new generation of connected products and services.
HTC has been gradually shifting away from a smartphones-only business to one that offers products (RE Camera, HTC Vive) that play nicely with multiple platforms. Additionally, partnerships like Under Armour show a company who desires to play on a number of fields and explore other growth opportunities.
