HTC publishes kernel source code for the One M9

HTC has just published the kernel source code for the new One M9 handset on the HTC Dev site. If you’re a developer looking to enhance your application functionality on the One M9, you can head to the dev site and download the kernel that clocks in at 517MB. Regular consumers don’t really have much use for the source code, but it’s there for the taking if developers want it. The kernel can also be used to create custom ROMs for the device, so we’ll hopefully get to see some new ROMs become available in the near future.

The kernel is based on Android 5.0.1 and is available for a number of different regions and carriers. As of right now, there’s no U.S. specific version of the code but more options will most likely be added in the future.

While HTC may not be the most lucrative Android OEM, it has been turning a profit over the last few quarters. The first quarter of 2015 is no different with HTC reporting a net profit of $11.6 million (T$360 million). While this number is not huge by any means, it should be noted that HTC was able to hold on to a profit even during the success of Apple’s two latest flagships and other Android competitors.
The total revenue for the first quarter was $1.32 billion (T$41.52 billion). We are anxious to see how HTC fares during the rest of 2015 with the release of its newest flagship, the One m9. Feelings towards the phone have been mixed, but hopefully it will result in higher profits for HTC. Success for more companies means more competition, and more competition is better for the consumer.

AT&T pushing Lollipop to the HTC One (M8) on April 7
Owners of the HTC One (M8) on AT&T finally have something to look forward to. Mo Versi, HTC Vice President of Product Management, announced on Twitter that a software update would begin rolling out on April 7. The software update is, of course, for Android 5.0 Lollipop. Versi says that the company received technical approval for the software and that means an update can occur as soon as possible. An delay will only occur if a bug randomly surfaces.
Let us know in the comments when you receive the software update.

HTC USA’s new ad with Robinson Cano involves smashing the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 [Video]
HTC USA has marked the official arrival of the baseball season by posting a new commercial with its recently acquired star campaigner Robinson Canó who plays for the Seattle Mariners in the MLB.
While it’s completely different from the mildly crazy Robert Downey Jr ads we’ve seen recently, it’s certainly not better. The ad involves Canó taking his position with a baseball bat in his hand and literally smashing the iPhone 6, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 into pieces.
This is followed by the following text – “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause. And sometimes you just have to challenge convention. Let’s play ball.”
While we don’t mind the good natured ribbing against industry rival, it seems a little too extreme to be smashing phones to get your point across. What do you think about this new ad? Sound off below.

Android Authority this week

Android fans, this was a bit quiet on the Android front (unless you count the outrageous April Fools’ pranks that made the rounds), but Google made it up to us with some interesting developments on the Chrome OS front. Google and its partners launched cheap new Chromebooks, a new Chromebase, the Chromebit TV dongle, and a tool that allows just about any Android app to run on Chrome OS. In other news, we heard rumors about the Xperia Z4 and the LG G4, Lollipop updates hit several popular devices, Google updated some of its apps, HTC introduced the One E9+ and the One M8+, and OnePlus finally released its new Oxygen OS.

Is HTC working on its own variation of Android Auto?
New markets are always being analyzed by comapanies because of their ability to expand profits. Home automation, wearables, and virtual reality are all being flooded with new products. The automobile market, though, has been slowly seeing the arrival of new platforms and complementing hardware. Current options include Google’s Android Auto, Apple’s CarPlay, and MirrorLink. Later this year, HTC could be involved with its own variation of Android Auto. On Reddit, one poster shared the front page release note for a device going by the codename “Cello.”
The release note shows that special components are being used. Night Vision, Sonar, Mini HMI (Human Machine Interface), DVD, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, Navigation and GPS are all named. Some of these are not available through Android Auto at this time.
Interestingly, HTC has apparently worked with Android 4.4 KitKat to operate Cello. That could change by the time it is introduced to the world.

Uh Oh, iFixIt teardown of the M9 shows you shouldn’t try to repair it yourself
The unibody build of the M9 makes it a though nut to crack. iFixIt has bravely dove underneath the M9 undeterred by the unfriendly design of the M8.
HTC just isn’t in favor of making easy to repair devices it seems. It is a good thing they introduced the Uh Oh protection program where they will fix physical damage for you.
The jest of the teardown guide is that the teardown starts off easy, but gets hard. Fast.
The motherboard seems to be glued down to to battery making both extremely difficult to remove without damaging one.
It also appears that the rotary vibrator is actually soldered down on top of the motherboard with some added adhesive for good measure.
There is no mistake, the HTC One M9 is solid device built with quality in mind. It is just a little hard to fix if said quality were to be hindered by human clumsiness.
You can read the whole teardown walk through with all of iFixIt’s quirky jokes.
Do yourself a favor and take good care of your M9; maybe even put a case on it. If your M9 takes a little damage, it might be best to send it in to HTC and let them fix it up for you.
